Daily Kos Takes Aim at Hannity, Shoots Self in Foot

Yesterday, the Daily Kos crowd (yes, that Daily Kos) claimed to have caught Sean Hannity in a blatant display of partisan hypocrisy. Declaring him “against hacking e-mails before he was for it,” they posted video showing Hannity condemning the hackers who broke into Sarah Palin’s personal email account a year ago, compared to a recent Hannity report on the hacked ClimateGate emails, in which Hannity focuses on the emails’ content, rather than the illegal nature in which they were obtained.
I read though the emails… ALL OF THEM… before I posted, and what I concluded was anticlimactic, there was nothing there, nothing incriminating, nothing that would derail her campaign as I had hoped, all I saw was personal stuff, some clerical stuff from when she was governor…. And pictures of her family.
ClimateGate, on the other hand, is a matter of prominent, influential scientists conspiring to destroy documents sought under Freedom of Information Act requests, displaying a less-than-stellar commitment to the scientific method, and showing far less certainty in private than their public facades would indicate, all in the service of a purported environmental crisis advocated as a pretext to assume even greater government control over the private sector.
I don’t know about you, but that strikes me as slightly more of a public interest than the Palin kids’ cell phone numbers.
Kos’s point is…what, exactly? If information enters the public sphere through illicit means, we should pretend it doesn’t exist? That might be the New York Times’ newly-discovered conviction, but that’s just not gonna cut it. Nothing in Kos’s brief snippet of “Hannity” indicates that Sean thinks the East Anglia hacker shouldn’t be punished for his crime, and you don’t have to be an advocate of email hacking to recognize the significance of the emails’ contents (besides, it’s not like we didn’t already know that global warming is a bunch of hot air).
In a perfect world, personal information and communications would be secure. But in a perfect world, respected scientists wouldn’t lie to us, either. However they were revealed, the ClimateGate emails crystallize several inconvenient truths about one of today’s biggest issues. The real crime would be closing our eyes to the truth that’s right in front of us.
