In 1535, Sir Thomas More, the Chancellor of England, was beheaded because he would not betray his conscience in the matter of the divorce of King Henry VIII. More was subject to intense pressure from the King, the opportunist churchmen of the court and his own family and friends.
The following exchange between the Duke of Norfolk and his close friend Thomas is included in the work, A Man For All Seasons:
The Duke of Norfolk: Oh confound all this. I’m not a scholar, I don’t know whether the marriage was lawful or not but dammit, Thomas, look at these names! Why can’t you do as I did and come with us, for fellowship!
Sir Thomas More: And when we die, and you are sent to heaven for doing your conscience, and I am sent to hell for not doing mine, will you come with me, for fellowship?
The Washington Post carried the story of Senator Ben Nelson’s moral collapse in this morning’s edition. For his own purse of silver, the Senator has sold his peaceful conscience and the future of his country.
Sen. Ben Nelson (Neb.), the final Democratic holdout on Healthcare, announced to his caucus Saturday morning that he would support the Senate reform bill, clearing the way for final passage by Christmas.
“We’re there,” said Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), as he headed into a special meeting to outline the deal.
Democratic leaders spent days trying to hammer out a deal with Nelson, and worked late Friday night with him on abortion coverage language that had proved the major stumbling block. Nelson also secured other favors for his home state.
America, we do not have our own Man or Woman For All Seasons… there is not a single Democrat who cannot be purchased.
At his trial, Sir Thomas More spoke to Sir Richard Rich, who provided false evidence needed by the Crown to execute the only noble man in the country. More asked the man who had perjured himself in exchange for political favors:
“It is written that it profiteth a man nothing if he sell his soul to gain the whole world… but for Wales?”
Senator Nelson originally asserted his moral conviction that Americans ought not be forced, by Obamacare, to pay for the slaughter of innocent babies in the wombs of their own mothers. By signing with the Democrats for “Fellowship’s sake,” Nelson sold his historical place with Sir Thomas, with principled statesman willing to sacrifice themselves for what they know to be right, and crawled into the cavern of historical oblivion, the final resting place of those who sell themselves for Wales…or Nebraska.
