Bring Back Profiling And Leave The Rest Of Us Alone

In a flip-flop worthy of John Kerry (I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it), Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told airline passengers that the security system was working just fine  before conceding that there was a major break down in the system on Christmas Day.  But for a bungling terrorist and a few brave passengers, we would have been grieving over a Christmas Day massacre.

Here is what Napolitano said on December 27th  (CNN):

When it came right down to it, the system worked…Once this incident occurred, everything happened that should have happened.

And here is what she said on December 28th  (NBC’s “Today” show):

Our system did not work in this instance…No one is happy or satisfied with that.

We can do all the pat-downs of millions of passengers a day we want and lock the bathroom doors for the last hour of every flight.  That won’t stop the Islamic fanatics who are determined to literally blow us out of the sky.

The fault lies, as Ann Coulter pointed out on “The O’Reilly Factor” last night, in the political correctness that prevents effective, targeted profiling.  If there is a higher probability that travelers from certain countries (whether or not they have visas to be in the United States) may commit acts of terrorism, then they should be subjected to the most highly intrusive searches — not grandma from Topeka.

Anyone identified as acting suspiciously on the plane by fellow passengers or crew should be searched and, if there is any remaining concern, confined to their seats unless accompanied by crew members.  Immunity from criminal or civil lawsuits should be granted to passengers or crew members who have credible grounds for suspicion, which could include someone praying or speaking in Arabic.  That way, when the rest of us have to go to the bathroom in the last hour of  a long flight we can.

Napolitano is incapable of doing what is necessary to thwart the terrorists.  So is her boss.  She and President Obama hate the very idea of profiling.  Just look at whom they installed as Assistant Secretary for Policy Development in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. They chose Arif Alikhan, a Sunni Muslim, who had previously served as Deputy Mayor of Homeland Security and Public Safety for the City of Los Angeles, where he was primarily responsible for derailing the Police Department’s plan to monitor activities within the Los Angeles Muslim community, including at numerous radical mosques and madrassas that were operating there.

Until we confront the Islamic terrorists ruthlessly as enemies of war rather than as ordinary criminals entitled to constitutional protections, we are sitting ducks for the next terrorist who does not bungle the jihad mission he was sent to fulfill.
