Climategate: it’s not the emails, it’s the data

Looks like Media Matters finally got the message. From the start, they’ve been trying to focus everyone’s attention on those hacked Climategate emails — because while they’re important, those emails don’t matter as much as the Climategate data.

Today, the George Soros Steno Pool is talking about the data, but only to insist that everyone else is lying about it:

On the December 8 edition of Fox News’ Special Report, correspondent James Rosen advanced the claim that “climate-gate” revealed that “some leading proponents of global warming [...] destroyed” raw temperature data.

Yeah, about that data…

Willis Eschenbach offers some indepth analysis:

People say “Yes, they destroyed emails, and hid from Freedom of information Acts, and messed with proxies, and fought to keep other scientists’ papers out of the journals … but that doesn’t affect the data, the data is still good.” Which sounds reasonable.

Eschenback explains that there are

three main global temperature datasets. (…) The three groups take raw data, and they “homogenize” it to remove things like when a station was moved to a warmer location and there’s a 2C jump in the temperature.

To his “great surprise,” Eschenback’s analysis revealed that the leading “global warming” researchers had “added a huge artificial totally imaginary trend to the last half of the raw data! Before getting homogenized, temperatures (…) were falling at 0.7 Celcius per century … but after the homogenization, they were warming at 1.2 Celcius per century. And the adjustment that they made was over two degrees per century … when those guys ‘adjust,’ they don’t mess around.”

Don’t expect to see that story covered at Media Matters anytime soon.
