Roman Polanski Affair Proves Hollywood Out of Step with America

When even leftists like Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson and MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski attack Hollywood, you can be quite certain that the glitterati have strayed incalculably far from the barest shred of common sense.
Such an attack took place on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” last Friday. Robinson and Brzezinski opened by criticizing those far-left multi-millionaire actors and directors who had rushed to the defense of the recently arrested Roman Polanski, the Oscar-winning director who fled the U.S. 31 years ago after he had drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl. Movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who has been circulating a pro-Polanski petition, has said:
“[W]hatever you think about the so-called crime, Polanski has served his time. A deal was made with the judge, and the deal is not being honored. … This is the government of the United States not giving its word and recanting on a deal, and it is the government acting irresponsibly and criminally.”
Among those who have signed Weinstein’s petition were directors Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Mike Nichols, Pedro Almodovar, and Woody Allen.
In his most recent column, titled “Hollywood’s Shame,” Robinson wrote:
The Los Angeles Times quoted Weinstein as saying in an interview that he doesn’t believe public opinion is running against Polanski — or that Hollywood is out of step. “Hollywood has the best moral compass, because it has compassion,” Weinstein said, according to the newspaper. “We were the people who did the fundraising telethon for the victims of 9/11. We were there for the victims of Katrina and any world catastrophe.”
Hollywood was there, all right, whenever the tragedy was distant, the victims were anonymous and the “compassionate” concert or telethon had acceptable production values that made all the stars look their best. How heroically they rearranged their busy schedules!
The brutalization of one young girl, it seems, leaves Hollywood’s big heart awfully cold.
Appearing on “Morning Joe” last Friday, Robinson added that Hollywood’s defense of Polanski was a sign that conservatives may have been right about Hollywood being out of touch with the rest of the nation. Mika Brzezinski’s reaction: “I couldn’t agree more with you.”
The hypocrisy and moral incoherence of Hollywood is, of course, legendary. But the inability of these pampered elites to understand just how much damage they have done to their image by defending the child-rapist Polanski is quite simply unbelievable.
Credit where credit is due though: Brzezinski and Robinson have shown themselves to be capable of recognizing hypocrisy even among their comrades on the left.
