Jihad at Fort Hood – by Robert Spencer

Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army psychiatrist, murdered twelve people and wounded twenty-one inside Fort Hood in Texas yesterday, while, according to eyewitnesses, “shouting something in Arabic while he was shooting.” Investigators are scratching their heads and expressing puzzlement about why he did it. According to NPR, “the motive behind the shootings was not immediately clear, officials said.” The Washington Post agreed: “The motive remains unclear, although some sources reported the suspect is opposed to U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq and upset about an imminent deployment.” The Huffington Post spun faster, asserting that “there is no concrete reporting as to whether Nidal Malik Hasan was in fact a Muslim or an Arab.”

Yet there was, and what’s more, Major Hasan’s motive was perfectly clear — but it was one that the forces of political correctness and the Islamic advocacy groups in the United States have been working for years to obscure. So it is that now that another major jihad terror attack has taken place on American soil, authorities and the mainstream media are at a loss to explain why it happened – and the abundant evidence that it was a jihad attack is ignored.

Nidal Malik Hasan was born in Virginia but didn’t think of himself as an American: on a form he filled out at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, he gave his nationality not as “American” but as “Palestinian.” A mosque official found that curious, saying: “I don’t know why he listed Palestinian. He was not born in Palestine.”

Center. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech and has a doctorate in psychiatry from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. While there, NPR reports, Hasan was “put on probation early in his postgraduate work” and was “disciplined for proselytizing about his Muslim faith with patients and colleagues.”

He was a staff psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before transferring to Fort Hood earlier this year. While at Walter Reed, he was a “very devout” member of and daily visitor to the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring. Faizul Khan, a former imam at the Center, expressed puzzlement over Hasan’s murders: “To know something like this happened, I don’t know what got into his mind. There was nothing extremist in his questions. He never showed any frustration….He never showed any remorse or wish for vengeance on anybody.”

So he identified himself as Palestinian and was a devout Muslim – so what? These things, of course, have no significance if one assumes that Islam is a Religion of Peace and that when a devout Muslim reads the Koran’s many injunctions to wage war against unbelievers, he knows that they have no force or applicability for today’s world. Unfortunately, all too many Muslims around the world demonstrate in both their words and their deeds that they take such injunctions quite seriously. And Nidal Hasan gave some indications that he may have been among them.

On May 20, 2009, a man giving his name as “NidalHasan” posted this defense of suicide bombing (all spelling and grammar as it is in the original):

There was a grenade thrown amongs a group of American soldiers. One of the soldiers, feeling that it was to late for everyone to flee jumped on the grave with the intention of saving his comrades. Indeed he saved them. He inentionally took his life (suicide) for a noble cause i.e. saving the lives of his soldier. To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause. Scholars have paralled this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers. If one suicide bomber can kill 100 enemy soldiers because they were caught off guard that would be considered a strategic victory. Their intention is not to die because of some despair. The same can be said for the Kamikazees in Japan. They died (via crashing their planes into ships) to kill the enemies for the homeland. You can call them crazy i you want but their act was not one of suicide that is despised by Islam. So the scholars main point is that “IT SEEMS AS THOUGH YOUR INTENTION IS THE MAIN ISSUE” and Allah (SWT) knows best.

Of course, it may not be the same Nidal Hasan. But there is more. One of his former colleagues, Col. Terry Lee, recalled Hasan saying statements to the effect of “Muslims have the right to rise up against the U.S. military”; “Muslims have a right to stand up against the aggressors”; and even speaking favorably about people who “strap bombs on themselves and go into Times Square.”

Maybe he just snapped, perhaps under the pressure of his imminent deployment to Iraq. But it’s noteworthy that if he did, he snapped in exactly the same way that several other Muslims in the U.S. military have snapped in the past. In April 2005, a Muslim serving in the U.S. Army, Hasan Akbar, was convicted of murder for killing two American soldiers and wounding fourteen in a grenade attack in Kuwait. AP reported: “Prosecutors say Akbar told investigators he launched the attack because he was concerned U.S. troops would kill fellow Muslims in Iraq. They said he coolly carried out the attack to achieve ‘maximum carnage’ on his comrades in the 101st Airborne Division.”

And Hasan’s murderous rampage resembles one that five Muslim men in New Jersey tried to carry out at Fort Dix in New Jersey in 2007, when they plotted to enter the U.S. Army base and murder as many soldiers as they could.

That was a jihad plot. One of the plotters, Serdar Tatar, told an FBI informant late in 2006: “I’m gonna do it….It doesn’t matter to me, whether I get locked up, arrested, or get taken away, it doesn’t matter. Or I die, doesn’t matter, I’m doing it in the name of Allah.” Another plotter, Mohamad Shnewer, was caught on tape saying, “They are the ones, we are going to put bullets in their heads, Allah willing.”

Nidal Hasan’s statements about Muslims rising up against the U.S. military aren’t too far from that, albeit less graphic. The effect of ignoring or downplaying the role that Islamic beliefs and assumptions may have played in his murders only ensures that – once again – nothing will be done to prevent the eventual advent of the next Nidal Hasan.

Will America see another display of timidity by our learders to call an act of terror just that? Will the fact that this man is a Muslim, that he denounced our involvement in the Mid East, and makes incendiary statements to others about our actions there, be glossed over by the media? This most certainly was a terrorist attack and our military ought to run intensive background checks on all members of the military who are Muslims, either by birth or conversion.
I fear this will happen again unless we are vigilent and take very harsh messures against anyone who remotely espouses any kind of contradictory opinions of our role in the wars against terrorism.

If we could just start drilling our own oil and stop buying from these backward middle eastern countries they would crumble. What else do they have to sell to the world, sand?

We may have to resort to the same policies of China and Russia. Do you hear of terrorist attacks there? They dont put up with this crap, they dont tolerate people calling for the destruction of their country within their borders, you just dont do it. But for some reason we keep listening to our PC numbnuts, who want everyone to feel comfy and not have to assimilate to our culture.

THIS IS THE US, LIKE IT, LOVE IT, SPEAK OUR LANGUAGE, OR JUST LEAVE, AND WE'LL HELP. Hell there ought to be enough stimulus money left to ship all the unwanted back home

During WWII it would be difficult to imagine the U.S. Army promoting to the rank of Major an avowed NAZI Party member. I guess Hitler and Gobbles were not smart enough to call critics of NAZI ideology Nazophobes and anti-German racists. The M.S.M. is agonizing about why this “Misunderstand of Islam” came down with Sudden Jihad Syndrome like it was the H1N1 flu. As Robert Spencer says:
“Major Hasan’s motive was perfectly clear — but it was one that the forces of political correctness and the Islamic advocacy groups in the United States have been working for years to obscure. The man has never been deployed to a battle zone. This must be the first recorded case in medical history of a man going homicidal as a result of pre-traumatic stress syndrome. He may be a mediocre psychiatrist, but he is making medical history nonetheless. His autobiography will be on the required reading list of all our best medical schools. His name will live on as the classical case of hasanoid schizophrenia.

    re: “Maybe he snapped.”

Maybe it is Virginia Tech. A few years ago, a student there, Cho, “snapped” and shot up the place, killing a lot of people.

    “Was Cho taught to hate?”

While I disagree with some of what you assert…For example: “Islam can not withstand rational analysis and criticism” No western religion, Islam included, can.

And I don't see how you can effectively argue that it is Anti-Christian by nature; after all, who else but Jesus defeats the Mahdi on the Islamic day of judgment? Jesus is a central hero to most sects of Islam (certain Shia excluded).

Regardless, kudos on a well written, thought provoking post.

What about the thousands being killed in Darfur as we speak? No one is helping them but I do know there are U.S. groups who said: "Bush, stop the genocide in Darfur." BUT, these were the same groups, and probably you LUCYQ, that slammed BUSH FOR STOPPING GENOCIDE IN IRAQ! They're still finding mass graves with women holding their children but what is disturbing is that the women were shot in the head execution style but no bullets were found on the children MEANING THEY WERE BURIED ALIVE!!! DID YOU SHED ONE TEAR FOR THEM? What's the difference between genocide in Iraq and Darfur? Then there are the numerous videos THAT DON'T LIE that showed Saddam's sons abusing women including a woman who was raped by Uday right after a wedding ceremony. Saddam even killed his own family members. THEN HE GASSED HIS OWN PEOPLE!!! SEE THOSE VIDEOS? WHERE WERE THE LEFTISTS? WHO CRIED FOR THE VICTIMS OF SADDAM? THEN THERE IS THE TALIBAN who also shot women in the head and treated their WOMEN LIKE PRISONERS AND SLAVES! YOUR POSTED NAME IS A WOMAN'S NAME SO IF YOU ARE A WOMAN, DON'T YOU CARE?WHO IS TO STOP THESE MADMEN? Now we have Iran who might have tested a NUCLEAR WEAPON UNDER THE EYES OF THE IAEA LED BY AN ARAB WHO IS PROBABLY ANOTHER HASAN HIDING UNDER THE BANNER OF LEGITIMACY!If Iran acquires, buys, or is given a nuke and uses it to "wipe Israel off the map" as Ahmadinejad, who thinks its his destiny to destroy Israel, THEN THERE WILL BE A WORLD WAR FOUGHT WITH NUKES!!! You want that? If not, call up your local Peace and Justice Center and ask why there are no screams by their ANTI-WAR/NUKE PROTESTORS! They do scream "NO WAR ON IRAN" WHEN THEY SHOULD BE SCREAMING "NO NUKES IN IRAN!" Isn't it easier to stop a country from acquiring them in the first place then it is to demand they get rid of them once they have them? LUCYQ WROTE: "That's exactly what this is and because we're at war with Islam, we should expect to see more Fort Hoods." IT SEEMS LIKE YOU HOPE FOR MORE FORT HOODS SO YOU CAN BE RIGHT!!!!GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT!YOU'RE THE ONE WHO REALLY NEEDS TO SEE A REAL PSYCHIATRIST!!!

  • trickyblain

Whatever happened to self-responsibility? To certain folks, it only applies when convenient. I'm sure this same author could be found railing on about welfare and public health care. But when it comes to mass-murder, the individual who kills is actually a victim of a University system (or a religion). Nonsense.

  • agb100

Remember that Fort Hood is a Gun Free Zone.

Amazingly, predictably, all these mass murders are committed in Gun Free Zones.

Maybe it is time to SAVE The PEOPLE and the children…and eliminate all Gun Free Zones…or, as an alternative, only have Gun Free Zones staffed by anti-2nd Amendment politicians and The Brady Bunch?

  • shelley_mk

But they won't–it is widely accepted to pretend, lie, fake your allegiance to Christianity or other non-Muslim governments in order to infiltrate. Requiring Muslims to swear allegiance to our Constitution would accomplish NOTHING.

This terrorist attack just infuriates me! There were so many red flags around this maniac Hasan so why was nothing done? It is political correctness, oh we can't criticise these Muslims but it is OK to criticise christians or jews. We need to stop this and call a spade a spade. We need to stop immigration of Muslims to this country, just look at what has happened in Europe in recent years. There are thousands of non Muslims in the middle east who would make excellent Americans, Chaldeans, jews and other groups who are being persecuted and killed by Muslims. I am sick and tired of this and I am going to contact my senators and congressmen and tell them to get off their butts and do what is right. One problem is Obama is still popular and he is an apologist for Islam. I don't hate Muslims abut I strongly dislike Islam. Read the book Unveiling Islam by the Caner brothers, 2 former Muslims who converted to Christianity and became Ministers. It is an eye opening revelation about Islam and its founder. Islam is easily the most intolerant religion and teaches hate of Jews and other non Muslims. Europe is almost lost to Muslim fanatics and we could be next unless we wake up. WAKE UP AMERICA before it is too late. Semper Fi

  • LucyQ

What is the solution, I am not sure, but certainly the first step is to tell the truth about Islam and really to create a world where the truth can be told about Islam without facing Danish Cartoon riots, Komaini fatawas, and other death threats. If we can agree on never fearing to tell the truth the rest will follow.”

You wrote a thoughtful post and it's appreciated. For the forseeable future, the next 40 to 50 years, whomever tells the truth about Islam will face riots, fatwas and Muslims going berserk. Islam itself is a religion of arrogance, supremacism and gender-apartheid as practiced in the ME and in many parts of Asia and Africa.

Ishmael sees nobility in telling young Muslim boys to run over fields with enemy mines in them so the adult soldiers won't get killed or injured. Westerners believe that is disgusting.

  • LucyQ

Beyond the obvious Jihad that Spencer writes about, and I agree with him, there are two aspects of this case I hear very little talk about:

1–Why are American soldiers killing thousands and thousands of Muslims who had nothing to do with 911? I was led to believe that bin Laden and al qaeda were responsible for 911.

Warmongers Bush/Obama told us 'this is not a war against Islam' but they both lied. That's exactly what this is and because we're at war with Islam, we should expect to see more Fort Hoods.

The right thing to do is get out of Afghanistan and forget about the Bush/Obama/McChrystal agenda to nation-build there, providing new highways, homes, parks, libraries, schools, computers, TV's, fresh water plants and food and health care for every Afghani. That will take another 100 years, a liberal estimation, without success but the real question is do we have enough troops-NO, do our European allies want to supply more troops-NO, can we afford it-NO. So why do we want to stay in Afghanistan while willfully allowing our own government to go bankrupt?

Point 2–the fact that this jihadist is a shrink is not surprising.

  • scottyga

Good point about Texas. I am not really up on the numbers but as I recall it is a really large state for military bases and personel along with California. A bettin man would have given great odds that this would have happened in TX.

Apparently we are letting muslims be muslims and this is what we get.

  • kenbain

America, how many more deaths of your dedicated and loyal citizens will it take before your leaders start telling you the truth about what is really happening in your country?

I live in Australia. Like Americans, we welcome anyone to our shores (multiculturism). We extend our tolerance, our democracy, our social security benefits, our health care and our free education to all newcomers. Muslims see this as wonderful. They come here, receive all the benefits and then use our democracy and tolerance against us by slowly establishing their ways over ours. Look at poor Brittain. They are being overrun by Muslims and over their Sharia Law is legal in many parts of Brittain. Did you know that in Brittain a Muslim can have up to 4 wives with children to all, with all being supported by social security. Are we in the West crazy or what?

Why is it that the only people who have difficulty intergrating with the local community is Muslims? Why is it that so much of our politicians have to learn about the “doo's and don'ts” when it comes to Muslims? (ask your FBI leader “Meuller” – he has been deceived by Muslim leaders by having all FBI agents taught a sanitised version of the Quran in the interest of mainstream Islam. He has to go.

Obama just criticises Americans and offers an open hand to Muslims. His administration is full of Muslims and Muslim sympathisers. I'm sorry America but it's time for your community to wake up. I've given up on Australian politicans as they just follow your leaders.

Want to know what is most likely to happen? Your leaders will not tell the truth which I believe was that at Fort Hood Nidal Hasan acted in the name of his religion shouting “God is Great” as he shot innocent soldiers, innocent people. He became a suicide shooter believing that his act would give him glory and 72 virgins in Muslim heaven. Sure he most probably acted alone but I wonder how many Muslims in America, indeed around the world are celebrating at the moment.

Wake up America. Don't accept your leaders lies they are constantly being deceived by Islamic organisations like CAIR, GSISS and the ISNA. Your people deserve leaders who are not afraid to tell the truth. Yesterday America suffered the worst terrorist attack since 9/11 by a Muslim fanatic. End of Story.

  • maureenbevilacqua

Hey! I am an Aussie too and I agree 100% with what Ken Bain has said above.

I want to comment about the terrible massacre at Fort Hood as follows.

When are America's citizens going to get so angry and say' is enough' to Islam extremists.

Other migrant groups have successfully assimilated and integrated to embrace American culture and patriotism. Under the tenets of Islam, Muslims must place their Religion above all else including Country, family and community. Fort Hood is another example of a 'moderate' using his obligation of Jihad and becoming a suicide martyr at the expense of 13 dead, innocent victims and countless more wounded.

Mad or stressed Psychiatrist- what a joke. He knew what he was doing, he was lucid and had made the organised, well planned steps to murder as many non- believers as he could. The only mistake from his religious point of view is that he didn't die.

If his beliefs and values were so contradictory to America's policies than he wouldn't have been employed in the services. He was just a good, obedient Muslim waiting for the right opportunity to act for his “God” in a manner which is sanctioned by Islam.

Now is the time to get angry and say we aren't going to allow it to happen again. And if weeding out the bad guys will step on many peoples toes – so be it.

You could do better, Steve. The main difference between Iraq and Darfur is that Darfur was not about to launch a mushroom cloud with nuke stuff from Africa against America.

Other than that reason and geographical, Islam is Islam whether in Darfur, Iraq, Afghanistan or Fort Hood. Why? Do you want us to invade all 78 Islamic nations in the ME and Africa and Asia, and completely bankrupt America?

  • LucyQ

Does that mean you fancy 'nation-building' for Ishmael? That's the Bush/Obama/Cheney/Biden plan……none are female that we know of.

  • LucyQ

Do you think we should kick out all the 5,000 to 20,000 Muslim American soldiers (the count keeps changing) fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan? Right after 911, we had 12 Arabic-speaking soldiers who could translate. Since we're nation building for Ishmael, who will translate for our military?

  • LucyQ

The question is if a foreign Islamic nation invaded us, first to find and kill Jesse James, but once they couldn't find him, their soldiers bombed, murdered and crippled many Americans, destroyed many parts of America, and then decided they should nation-build for US, thus staying here even longer, and then demanding that we throw out our democracy and constitution to be replaced with Islamic laws, would an American who killed invaders be a hero or a terrorist?

Since we've been lied to and are at war with Islam, then we should either invade all 78 Islamic nations simultaneously and forget about nation-building or get out of the two we've already invaded for the longest war in our history and forget about nation-building.

Why are we nation-building for an enemy who doesn't want to convert and be just like us?

  • LucyQ

If our soldier is brainwashed that easily, then he shouldn't be a soldier, period.

  • LenPowder

When one considers how the media and others fail to understand the simple motives of a jihadist, one has to wonder, how many people are there that NEVER UNDERSTOOD why 911 occurred? Is it possible that a large number of Americans to this day don't understand what motivated that attack? And if such ignorance is widespread, how do we explain it?

  • salubrius

The Times of London initially printed a story quoting an eyewitness that stated Hasan was yelling “Allahu Akbar” when he was murdering his fellow soldiers. I sent a letter to them complimenting it for publishing that story. “This is SJS or Sudden Jihad Syndrome. “Daniel Pipes] wrote those words days after 9/11 and has been criticized for them ever since. The Times (London) offers some clues:” Muslim army doctor shouted 'Allahu akbar' as he shot dead 13″ My compliments to the Times. The American Mainstream Media is too politically correct. There have several such incidents in the US and one in Kuwait typically attributed to “Insanity”. They didn't print it. They mysteriously withdrew the story.

  • bushlikesdick12

Hasan was breifed by George W and Cheney hours before the shooting as Bush's Ranch. Apparantly from my sources, Hasan was extensivily interrogated by the Bush Administration and struck a deal with Cheny's people Haliburton to carry out Cheney's secret arms for oil deal with Osama Bin Laden.

When Cheney refused to give all the arms promised to Bin Laden, Laden then threatened to blow up the trade center which he planned well in advanced.

Terrorist murder in the name of Islam.
If you are Moslem, you have to behave according to the rules of Islam which are set down in the Koran and which are very different than the teachings of the Bible. Islam was born with the idea that it should rule the world. Islam has to fight the Jews and the Christians and this fighting is called Jihad. Jihad means war against those people who don’t want to accept the Islamic superior rule. That’s jihad as explained at : http://israelagainstterror.blogspot.com/2008/07

  • idviking

It is a tragedy that the real criminals in this and other cases like are not held responsible for their failures. While the murderous acts of Nidal Hasan and other Muslims who choose jihad against non-believers are reprehensible they are simply following the edicts of the Koran. Why does the media continue to coddle Islam when time and time again they display nothing but intolerance for different faiths?

The mass media outlets that fail to report the shortcomings of Islam that continue to lead to the death and injury of non-believers are without question complicit in those injuries.

By refusing to tell the whole story about honor killings so as not to offend the society that condones this practice young girls in the USA are murdered or live in fear of being killed by their parents. Instead the media ignores these cases because they are an embarrassing component of Islam that needs to be corrected.

A US Army recruiter is killed by a Muslim in Arkansas . Denounce this aspect of Islam to the world that it is a form of genocide and racist to kill someone because they are not Muslim. Instead the mass media minimized the coverage of this event to avoid embarrassing Muslims worldwide into facing this flaw in their faith.

Islam will not correct itself from within. It perceives itself as perfect. And it is probably a stretch to think that objective exposure of the flaws within Islam will lead to some sort of reformation in its intolerance toward non-Muslims.

Media exposure of flaws within a financial institution, political organization or a religion should act as an agent for correcting those flaws when the law ignores the problem or simply fails to do anything. The failure to be objectively critical of now obviously genocidal behavior is only going to embolden future Jihadists.

Media refusing to make the connection between broken components of Islam and the murder of people who do not subscribe to this faith are implicitly responsible in those deaths. When the Nazis systematically tried to eliminate undesirables in the pursuit of Hitler's Master Race the world rose up and condemned this practice. How is it any different if the Muslims try to eliminate people of other undesirable faiths?

And I maintain that the Administration must be purged of Muslims and moreso, our Armed Forces, as you must remember it is not the first such “incident”, that is, if you dare calling it so, that happened already.

Form craddle to grave, Muslims have Koran teachings hammered into their heads and firmly believe their going to Paradise to enjoy the 72 virgins their “Prophet” has ready for their enjoyment to the end of times, if they take along as many infidels as humanly possible..

Lucy Qassam, I dont get your logic. Your analogy is flawed, because there is no similarity between a lone person like Jesse James, and Osama Bin Laden/all of Islam that requires the subjugation of the world. Oh well, people like you will never get it, until one of our cities is nuked. But then if it isnt your city and your still alive I am sure you will make excuses for it because we were over there.

Ya right, what we need to do is apologize and beg their forgiveness then they will leave us alone (you obviously dont understand islam). Next we allow them to slowly take over our country, like the UK, Europe, Australia, then you'll be crying. You'll love the way they treat women, snicker. But hey, at least we didnt offend anyone.

Yesterday on the TV they interviewed the father of a female soldier wounded in the shooting. She told her father that Hasan walked into the Readiness Center, yelled “Allah Akbar” and began shooting. She felt it was a training scenario for a moment until the soldier next to her was shot dead.

“Allah akbar” means god is great, I'm pretty sure. This is not the case of a soldier loosing it per se but the case of a Muslim acting in the name of their religion and their god, Allah. He murdered in the name of Allah. That is Jihad to me.

  • LucyQ

You didn't answer my question. Jesse James was just a name I threw out. I know Islam very well, well enough to know Ishmael is evil, not stupid.

How does our being over there stop Ishmael from getting nukes? Again, why are we nation building for Islam, wanting our taxes to be raised to afford all this?

Which one of our presidents armed Pakistan with nukes? I think it was Reagan but not sure. You don't understand Islam because if you did, you'd understand why we shouldn't be nation building there, making social workers and nurses out of our armed forces.

I like that he kept us safe, I like that he pushed for the surge in Iraq, I like that he deposed Saddam Hussein, and I especially like that he wasn't Al Gore or John Kerry. Run the 2000 and 2004 elections over and I'll still vote for Bush, despite his failings (see below).

What I don't like about Bush: He was about as articulate as Sean Penn speaking without a script, he never fought the Democrats over Social Security reform, in fact he never fought over anything. He pretty much quit trying–much like his father did after Desert Storm. His lack of trying and unwillingness or inability to articulate a vision different from Pelosi and Reid set the stage for the Republican defeats in 2006 and 2008. AND, he said Islam is a religion of peace. Watta crock! I saw bunches of Muslims at the Denver Airport today–one of them pushing a rifle case(?) on a baggage cart. I'm so proud of our society's tolerance….
