Dismantling America – by Thomas Sowell


Just one year ago, would you have believed that an unelected government official, not even a Cabinet member confirmed by the Senate but simply one of the many “czars” appointed by the President, could arbitrarily cut the pay of executives in private businesses by 50 percent or 90 percent?

Did you think that another “czar” would be talking about restricting talk radio? That there would be plans afloat to subsidize newspapers— that is, to create a situation where some newspapers’ survival would depend on the government liking what they publish?

Did you imagine that anyone would even be talking about having a panel of so-called “experts” deciding who could and could not get life-saving medical treatments?

Scary as that is from a medical standpoint, it is also chilling from the standpoint of freedom. If you have a mother who needs a heart operation or a child with some dire medical condition, how free would you feel to speak out against an administration that has the power to make life and death decisions about your loved ones?

Does any of this sound like America?

How about a federal agency giving school children material to enlist them on the side of the president? Merely being assigned to sing his praises in class is apparently not enough.

How much of America would be left if the federal government continued on this path? President Obama has already floated the idea of a national police force, something we have done without for more than two centuries.

We already have local police forces all across the country and military forces for national defense, as well as the FBI for federal crimes and the National Guard for local emergencies. What would be the role of a national police force created by Barack Obama, with all its leaders appointed by him? It would seem more like the brown shirts of dictators than like anything American.

How far the President will go depends of course on how much resistance he meets. But the direction in which he is trying to go tells us more than all his rhetoric or media spin.

Barack Obama has not only said that he is out to “change the United States of America,” the people he has been associated with for years have expressed in words and deeds their hostility to the values, the principles and the people of this country.

Jeremiah Wright said it with words: “God damn America!” Bill Ayers said it with bombs that he planted.

Community activist goons have said it with their contempt for the rights of other people.

Among the people appointed as czars by President Obama have been people who have praised enemy dictators like Mao, who have seen the public schools as places to promote sexual practices contrary to the values of most Americans, to a captive audience of children.

Those who say that the Obama administration should have investigated those people more thoroughly before appointing them are missing the point completely. Why should we assume that Barack Obama didn’t know what such people were like, when he has been associating with precisely these kinds of people for decades before he reached the White House?

Nothing is more consistent with his lifelong patterns than putting such people in government— people who reject American values, resent Americans in general and successful Americans in particular, as well as resenting America’s influence in the world.

Any miscalculation on his part would be in not thinking that others would discover what these stealth appointees were like. Had it not been for the Fox News Channel, these stealth appointees might have remained unexposed for what they are. Fox News is now high on the administration’s enemies list.

Nothing so epitomizes President Obama’s own contempt for American values and traditions like trying to ram two bills through Congress in his first year— each bill more than a thousand pages long— too fast for either of them to be read, much less discussed. That he succeeded only the first time says that some people are starting to wake up. Whether enough people will wake up in time to keep America from being dismantled, piece by piece, is another question— and the biggest question for this generation.

    And just in case some of you do not know Mr. Sowell, he is a well educated black man. He has taught economics at many prestigious universities and worked in government as well. I only mension this to give some credibility to his critique of another black man, as though that should matter. Its amazing the left has not castigated him the way they did Clarence Thomas, Condeleza Rice …. etc. I guess he has not yet hit a raw nerve with them. At any rate he is absolutely correct that we are experiencing a communist takeover without a shot being fired. I guess Khrushchev was right. Its time for patriots to wake up and pay attention.

    A powerful, disturbing rant that compiles many troubling aspects of the Obama administration together and reaches some grand, negative conclusions about the methods and goals of the current administration.

    Are the details accurate? Probably. Is the intrepretation fair? Perhaps. Does Obama have a soft spot for authoritarian policies and socialist dictators? Perhaps, Is it likely that Obama will “change America” in that direction? That remains far, far less certain.

    Three actions of the Obama administration that Sowell zooms in on – and have received far too little attention – are the proposed subsidies to newspapers, the possible creation of a national police force, and the propensity of unconfirmed czars to wield astonishing powers. Where is the mainstream press? Where are the critical articles highlighting this administration's “peculiar” preference for international institutions like the UN over American traditions of free speech?

    Oh Sowell has very definitely hit a raw nerve. On hundreds of occasions, for those of us in the Black community. It's just that its clear his only power and influence (in the so-far majority) world comes from the fact that he IS a (self-hating) Black man, and that its only worth trotting him out when he is vocally castigating another person of African descent.

    I'm interested in knowing where the “news” is, in this opinion piece. As far as I can tell, this is the very same drivel that the rabid right has been laying down since President Obama's candidacy began in Illinois. I could go paragraph by paragraph, showing the hypocrisy and lies that have been put forth for over a year now, but what's the point? Most folks reading this site would consider me to be a pinko commie terrorist because I'm a practicing Muslim woman of African descent who happens to believe that government is a useful, necessary institution. I believe that because, despite the endless greed (and I do mean endless; witness Wall Street's recent rapaciousness) of some earlier Americans, who felt completely justified and even righteous, to kidnap from their homelands, and then practice – for over 200 years – enslaving my forefathers, it was the Government that eventually saw fit to terminate our bondage, first officially, and finally – 100 years or so later – de facto.

    But again, most folks here won't see this the way I do. Sowell speaks about “people who reject American values, resent Americans in general and successful Americans in particular, as well as resenting America’s influence in the world.”

    Why do those on the right so covet their possessions and money feel so threatened by we who want to insure that everyone is cared for enough to be able to support themselves? We have no resentment towards Americans. We ARE Americans! We DO resent betrayals to American values, however.
    I say that me and my kind CELEBRATE and RELY ON American values! We celebrate the concepts of “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends [WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN MORE DESTRUCTIVE THAN THE SECRECY & STEALTH OF BUSH-CHENEY IN THE HOMELAND SECURITY ACT??], it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government [ONE NOT CONTROLLED BY WALL STREET or PHARMA or HEALTH INSURANCE HOODLUMS & THIEVES], laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. [HEALTH IS A BIG PART OF SAFETY as far as I'm concerned!]” OR “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of you teamming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” I'm making you squirm now, yes? You SHOULD be squirming as THESE are consummate AMERICAN VALUES. To those of us on the Left, this phrase from Lady Liberty epitomizes what America should represent to the world – a place where anyone can seek refuge, and EARN a better life. We steadfastly believe in the God-Fearing nature of our Founding Fathers (notwithstanding that thing about them being slave owners) – that suggest that God's Commandments can be a lived experience in this Land – and that in the end, we ARE our Brothers' Keeper.

    But I think this flies smack in the face of those on the right. You seem to believe that everything you get, you got because you deserve it, or because you worked for it all by yourself. Like you got help from no one; like your success does not rest squarely on the backs of those who came before you, or even those who stand beside you. Sowell believes that, for God's Sake, and HE KNOWS that but for abolitionists such as John Brown, and freedom-fighters (translation: TERRORISTS) such as Harriet Tubman, he would still be in CHAINS. Even those of you who built businesses – with HUNDREDS, maybe THOUSANDS of others WORKING in your name – you STILL think – “It's all me, all mine, all the time.”

    This is not the American Way, from where I sit. But whatever. Go cry in your beer with Sowell.

    “Bring me your poor…” is still an American value, in that you are correct. But it goes further than simply inviting any and all people into the country. It demands the full integration and assimilation into the American idea of liberty. America is not simply a collection of people pursuing enlightened self-interest. America draws its life from a belief in each person's innate dignity and potential for greatness. Our founding principles bind us into one people and one nation. America is, and has always been a nation of individuals bound together in a common cause of opportunity and freedom. No other nation has done it as well or as long as America. We on the right covet the liberty of all people and their right to take care of themselves, not to be taken care of. You might look at it as the right to grow up, rather than being forced by government to remain in infantile servility to the state. As a practicing Muslim, I'm sure you agree that Sharia stands in direct conflict with this idea of freedom and the dignity of the human person.

    Liberals are educated beyond their intelligence – can speak and read smoothly, but facts and logic elude them.

    Unlike Obama, who is a man without any accomplishment before he convinced the worthless Democrat Media to elect him President, Sowell is a highly accomplished economist & commentator as well as a typical Republican who has been shunned by the Democrat Media. Obama & the Democrat Party today are MARXISTS fulfilling the nightmare predicted in Whittaker Chambers book “Witness.”

    Shakira…We Conservatives do believe in most of what you said, but still you miss the whole point, even though you include it above. The glaring difference that you and those on the left fail to recognize is the big word “EARN”. As in we believe in guaranteeing equal opportuniy, but we see the reality in this and that is that you CANNOT guarantee equal results, thus earning what you have, not lining up and demanding that someone give it to you!!

    Conversion to Islam is supposed to buy protection from Islamic barbarism.

    WHY no outcry and prosecution of these terrible crimes against Black humanity from African American MUSLIMS and the US/EU/UN?

    Harriet Tubman, wonderful heroine, was one of our very greatest Americans. She is one of my heroes/heroines.

    I have never been, and will never be on the Left. I believe very strongly we must help Americans in need. This is not being done. Massive amounts of money continue to be given as gifts to other countries. Not a single dollar should be given to other countries. America is actually bankrupt. Homeless shelters are filled to capacity. Tent cities have sprung up all over America. It is heartbreaking. It is highly immoral to give massive amounts of money to other countries and at the same time neglect desperate Americans who have lost their jobs and homes. Farming communities should be set up for the homeless where they could support themselves and live off the land.

    It is sad that African Americans are verbally attacked (in one case, recently both verbally and physically attacked) for being on the right. We have a great deal to be concerned about. See article below:

    Why Obama's lieutenants love Mao

    The left's long romance with tyranny and terror is manifesting itself in the Obama administration once again. Having experienced the high of putting $900 million of American taxpayers' money into Hamas' blood-soaked hands, some Obama advisers are now getting a new fix by offering thanks and praise to the late communist mass murderer Mao Zedong.

    President Obama's White House communications director, Anita Dunn, recently praised Mao Zedong in a videotaped speech to high schoolers by calling him “one of the two people that I turn to most.” When confronted on it, she said she was just joking. It remains a mystery what is laughable about extolling the greatest mass murderer in human history who slaughtered 70 million of his own people. In any case, Dunn was clearly not joking, as is evident in the detailed and earnest explanation she gave the high schoolers in her references to both Mao and Mother Teresa while emphasizing the importance of perseverance and choosing one's own path.

    Dunn's veneration of Mao is shared by another Obama insider, “manufacturing czar” Ron Bloom, who, it appears, has been quoting the communist mass murderer with great approval. At a 2008 Union League Club meeting in New York, for instance, Bloom explained to his audience that:

    “We know that the free market is nonsense. (…) We kind of agree with Mao that political power comes largely from the barrel of a gun.”
