Stretching It: Glenn Beck’s “Endorsement” Of Ground Zero Imam

One of my favorite toys growing up was the Slinky. It was the simplest of inventions, just a metal spring. I could walk it down the stairs for hours – I was easily entertained back then, I guess. Inevitably, I or one of my friends would stretch the Slinky too far, and it would twist up or bounce back into a knot that was impossible to untangle. Particularly inept friends of mine could ruin a Slinky the same day they bought it. And it happened time and time again.
Nowadays, the Slinky twisters work at places like Media Matters for America and the Huffington Post, but they’re twisting something far more damaging – the truth. Witness this week’s ridiculous attempt to smear the name of Glenn Beck based on a perfectly innocent 2006 morning show appearance. Monday’s Huffington Post headline was hard to miss: all caps, bold, billboard-sized red letters. It read, “ON TAPE: GLENN BECK AND THE ‘GOOD MUSLIM’ IMAM RAUF.” The sloppily written article linked to a Media Matters story about a 2006 appearance Beck made on Good Morning America where Diane Sawyer interviews both Beck and Feisal Abdul Rauf.
The Huffington Post and Media Matters articles both intimate that Beck, by supposedly gesturing at Rauf while mentioning “good Muslims,” endorsed the imam and his beliefs in 2006. Another bit of dialogue in the video goes like this:
Rauf: These reactions [by Muslim extremists] are not at all called for by Islamic teachings. The teachings of Islam are very similar to the teachings of Christianity, of loving the one God and loving thy neighbor. These are the two common principles.
Sawyer: All right, let me turn to Glenn Beck, because the Imam Rauf said this is a group of people. This is not him. This is not all of us; this is a group of people.
Beck: (crosstalking): Sure…sure.
