John Cusak Speaks and the Country’s Collective IQ Drops By Listening

A couple hours after getting home from a screening of Hot Tub Time Machine (don’t worry, it doesn’t top The Hangover, as if it had a chance) I found a gem of a quote from one of its stars. I thought the film was nothing more than a fair escapist comedy full of 80’s references (review will be up at Parcbench on Friday). However, John Cusack thinks he needs to politicize the film with his flawless (note: idiotic) logic. In an MSN interview he was asked if there are still aftershocks of the 1980’s lingering.

Cusack responds:

“I think that’s pretty true; politically, you can definitely think that what started in 1980, with Reagan coming into office, was really the beginning of the end of some version of the American Dream, when they started to gut and deregulate the entire country and really redistribute wealth upwards,” Cusack says. “So in that sense, that’s when they started that sort of fundamentalist free-market sort of mania, where you had to worship profit, you had to worship money and you had to worship this kind of perfect ecumenical system where the markets would cover everything … and it was all bulls—, of course, ’cause they were rigged. But this great narrative started being spun, that you still see today. So in that sense, politically, certainly, it was a huge shift and swing in American consciousness … and probably just being a teenager when you go from 10 to 20, that’s kind of the most formative years of your life in some way. I was happy, in some sense, with the movies, to make movies that don’t buy into the revisionism of that history, that it was all always terrific; I don’t remember it being terrific at all.”

I suppose we can’t expect much from an actor whose career was so far in the toilet last year he was forced to star in a Roland Emmerich disaster film…
