Obsolete Filmmaker Woody Allen Defends Rapist at Cannes Film Festival

Director turned rapist Roman Polanski was still a hot topic at the Cannes Film Festival in France last weekend. Naturally, many of us would have assumed this situation would have blown over by now after it appeared Polanski was to be forced back to the U.S. last fall. However, if he did not face justice in the first few decades after his offense why would we assume it could be dealt with any faster today?
If anything, the Polanski case has provided a perfect opportunity for washed up celebrities to defend despicable behavior in an attempt to get back into the news. The problem is that making headlines by defending horrendous acts does not help anyone’s profession. Instead it puts even more nails in their career’s coffin.
Case and point – last weekend, during the Cannes Film Festival, there was much talk about an interview between a French radio station and the has-been filmmaker Woody Allen who misinterpreted the Polanski situation:
“He’s an artist, he’s a nice person, he did something wrong and he paid for it. [The critics] are not happy unless he pays the rest of his life. They would be happy if they could execute him in a firing squad.”
We know Polanski is a good filmmaker, telling us that doesn’t change anything. Calling for justice of a man who raped a minor and fled the country isn’t exactly the hyperbolic response to a crime that Allen says it is either. The funny thing is that Allen has not been a relevant filmmaker since the Polanski rape actually occurred in the 1970’s. Even better, Allen believes that there are more important things that we should be dealing with and continued with a quote he must definitely regret:
“They should take the money they spent on the Polanski case and go after drug dealers and rapists.”
Well, that is exactly what they are doing. After all, Polanski did rape a minor after he drugged her. As we know, Allen left his wife for their adopted daughter, so this is just another case of one crazy defending another. Allen is long past the point of no return when it comes to resurrecting not only his film career but the respect of audiences as well. This is only the latest outburst from an endless melting pot of useless celebrities waiting for a chance to comment.
If there is one thing we can always count on, it is all of the shameless and obsolete celebs in the entertainment industry that continuously come out in defense of ‘one of their own.’
