Canada Enters the Culture War over Abortion

Canada’s Liberals are stoking the political fires on the back of women’s health in advance of the upcoming G-8. The summit has virtually been hijacked by an aggressive political drive, pushing the hot-button abortion issue on the world stage for votes in Canada.
At the helm is Liberal Opposition Leader Michael Ignatieff who launched a desperate nothing-to-lose campaign for public support after taking over from his humiliated predecessor Stephane Dion last year. So now he has resorted to the notoriously cheap tactics liberals use against conservative opponents: hijack a sexy issue, twist its direction, slap stereotypical labels on it, use these labels to rouse fear about scary conservative agendas and you’re set to go. Conservatives are now branded as enemies of progression, and as bigots driven by archaic philosophies rooted in: moralism, traditionalism, parochialism and even misogyny.
Mr. Ignatieff hired in October Peter Donolo as his chief of staff — a man who, as communications chief to former prime minister Jean Chrétien was proficient at inspiring fears of the Conservatives’ alleged “hidden agenda.”
After Mr. Harper announced that he would champion at the G8 an initiative to improve maternal and infant health in the developing world, the Liberals immediately demanded it include funding abortions; predicting it wouldn’t, Mr. Ignatieff suggested the Conservatives were following the playbook of former U.S. president George Bush, who cancelled foreign aid for abortions. – National Post
But now that Ignatieff has raised a brouhaha over abortions, aid experts have been stirred and they’re lashing out, prompting Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth to offer them some loutish political counsel as the G-8 approaches: “shut the f—up on this issue…if you push it, there will be more backlash.” Her raw ‘advise’ lead to even more leftist criticism about Canada’s disregard for gender equality and women’s rights.
Given a recent scandalous expose, the saga really gets hot…
Ignatieff has made himself an abortion-supporting culture warrior …resurrecting abortion fears can only reopen old, divisive debates.
Last week, Frank Graves, president of Ekos Research Associates said he had been advising Mr. Ignatieff to get busy making wedges: “Cosmopolitanism versus parochialism, secularism versus moralism, Obama versus Palin, tolerance versus racism and homophobia, democracy versus autocracy.” That kind of strategy worked well for a Liberal government set on fighting off conservative comers, but it’s not been tried by one that needs to roughly double its seat count if it hopes to rule again. – National Post
So alas, Canada has now been baptized by fire into the ‘culture war’ over the issue of abortion on the world stage, leading to one progressive monkey after another jumping on the old band wagon about conservative misogyny toward women over the singular abortion issue.
The G-8 summit is neither the time nor the place for progressive leader Ignatieff to make a global exhibit of his conservative rancor, and parade his new suit as a so-called “Culture Warrior.” His fanatical desperation for Canadian public approval is obvious. His timing may well backfire, particularly given a recent Harris Decima poll showing that Canadian values are actually shifting to the right.
