Those Poor Victims of Witch-Hunt Season: The Democrats

In a New York Times opinion column, Republicans and Republican supporters have been accused of an unrelenting, antagonistic witch hunt on the poor Democrats, and just in time for midterm elections too. Funny how role reversals can happen on a whim. Wasn’t George Bush the icon target of witch hunt antagonists?
If it’s the downtrodden economy, blame Bush and the Republicans; if it’s environmental issues, blame Bush and the Republicans; the rise of Islamic Fundamentalism, blame Bush and Republican foreign policy for provoking it. Now the New York Times is trying to upstage the popular targets of the 21st century, Bush and the Republicans, actually claiming that Republicans are targeting Democrats. Poor Democrats. It’s tempting to breath a sigh of relief over this imagined role reversal, accept if you happen to be Paul Krugman. According to him, the Democrats have long been the target. He declares that “It’s Witch-Hunt Season Again” against the Democrats.
The last time a Democrat sat in the White House, he faced a nonstop witch hunt by his political opponents. Prominent figures on the right accused Bill and Hillary Clinton of everything from drug smuggling to murder. And once Republicans took control of Congress, they subjected the Clinton administration to unrelenting harassment — at one point taking 140 hours of sworn testimony over accusations that the White House had misused its Christmas card list.
Now it’s happening again — except that this time it’s even worse. Let’s turn the floor over to Rush Limbaugh: “Imam Hussein Obama,” he recently declared, is “probably the best anti-American president we’ve ever had.”
