This Week Mainstreams Al Sharpton: David Brinkley, Call Your Office

I like Jake Tapper. I think Tapper is one of the few MSM big time TV people who don’t engage in what Bernie Goldberg dubbed the “Slobbering Love Affair” with Barack Obama. There is no doubt that Jake Tapper is a huge improvement over Clinton Administration hack George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s This Week.
I don’t know Tapper’s politics. That’s a good thing. David Brinkley, who hosted This Week for years was a liberal, but generally did his best to host a fair discussion on Sunday mornings.
In the past, I’ve protested the mainstreaming of Hurricane Katrina vanden Heuvel of The Nation, as though she is a “liberal,” and not the editor of an openly Marxist magazine. This week’s panel on This Week, however, made that look like a moderate choice.
While it gave Will a chance to be in rare form, zinging Sharpton and Maher with reality they are unused to with their normal audiences– such as when Maher made the fantasy declaration that Brazil got “off oil in the 70s,” and seemed flustered when Will mocked him for it– this was a weird choice for what is generally considered a prestige Sunday show.
Sharpton, meanwhile, tried in vain to perpetrate the lie that the Arizona immigration law actually openly targets Latinos, as though it’s written in the language, “police shall stop and poor Latino and say ‘show me your papers.’” Will made mincemeat of him.
(Sharpton, is, of course, a special case. This is a man who knowingly tried to put innocent cops and prosecutors in JAIL, in order to promote a racial agenda in the Tawana Brawley fraud. Forget his kooky views, he should not be mainstreamed ever, or allowed to debate in polite company—at least without that being thrown in his face.)
But back to the panel makeup. Can anyone imagine ABC putting together a panel consisting of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Jonah Goldberg on the right, taking on say, David Ignatius and Juan Williams for the liberal side?
On the other hand, maybe I shouldn’t complain. If the Left perspective is to be represented by Bill Maher and Al Sharpton that’s gotta be a good thing for conservatives. How about Michael Moore next week?
