The West Has Had It — Say the French

Pages: 1 2

In trying to come to terms with the complexities of our day, the mainstream media is of little help to us. Newspaper reports are for the most part editorials in disguise, shilling for a chiefly leftist agenda. As for the TV networks—News, public affairs programming and the majority of talk shows—they are almost always slanted and superficial. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Canada, for example, is little more than a farm team for Al-Jazeera, the BBC is a marble soapbox, and the American colossi are in the business of generating simulated worlds.

For those who have the time, however, nothing can replace a significant body of literature that has come both to supplement and to ground our awareness of the intellectual currents and ideological forces troubling the contemporary world. In this respect, the book still remains the primary “technology” for the dissemination of substantive knowledge. Our focus here tends to fasten, for obvious reasons, on the English and American publishing market, rich with important contributions toward our understanding of the times we live in, but by no means exhaustive. Those who enjoy the leisure to travel further afield might do well to consult the school of Nouveaux Philosophes, or New Philosophers, enlivening the intellectual scene in France, whom National Post columnist Robert Fulford describes as “more academic yet more flamboyant cousins of the American neo-conservatives.” Many of their books have been translated and are readily available.

This distinguished cohort boasts some of the most astute writers and commentators on the predicament in which the West now finds itself. Among the most prominent members are André Glucksmann, generally regarded as the father-doyen of the group, Alain Finkielkraut, Shmuel Trigano, Bernard-Henri Lévy and Pascal Bruckner. Although their sources, methods, specific subjects and lines of attack may differ, they are all united in confronting what they intuit as the imminent collapse of the West.

Glucksmann is concerned with what he calls “the Somalization of the planet” and the Western tendency “to sleep peacefully” before the looming threat of a reinvigorated Islam, which “puts us all in jeopardy” (City Journal). Finkielkraut sees the swelling tide of antisemitism as a sure sign of a coming civilizational catastrophe. His seminal texts, The Imaginary Jew and The Defeat of the Mind, make essential reading. In Left in Dark Times, Lévy (who coined the term by which the group is known) retains a nostalgic allegiance to the “old left’s” commitment to “social justice” but excoriates the simple-mindedness, facile utopianism, self-infatuation and futile search for transcendence which characterizes the “new left.” (Though how this differs from the “old left” is an open question.) We might say that the terms “social justice,” “diversity,” “accommodation” and “egalitarianism” bandied about by the left comprise an averting rhetoric meant to protect an obsolete and defective world-view, like installing a car alarm in a Trabant.

Trigano takes a somewhat different tack, analyzing the Jewish proclivity to self-betrayal as a way of dodging “la mauvaise foi planétaire”—“the planetary bad faith” represented by antisemitism (Controverse, numero 10). As he writes in his le temps de l’exil, “Une lumière s’étaint dans le monde” (“A light is extinguished in the world”). Curiously and somewhat incomprehensibly, as if in confirmation of Trigano’s thesis, both Finkielkraut and Lévy have recently joined the new petitionary group JCall with a distinctly anti-Israeli stamp, and have been taken to task by Trigano. “There is something pathetic,” he says, “about seeing political blindness masquerading as moral grandiloquence…Israel has become the screen onto which Europe projects all its problems and its failure to face up to the challenges at hand.”

Nevertheless, in spite of their pessimism and their differences, these writers continue to struggle against that which they fear may well be inevitable. This is particularly true of Bruckner who, in my estimation, is one of the most compelling and prescient of the cadre of French intellectuals and repays prolonged study. Indeed, in his 2006 La tyrannie de la pénitence, he predicted the Russian invasion of Georgia and the craven European prostration before the Russian juggernaut: “Si demain Vladimir Poutine…envahissait la Géorgie…l’Europe occidentale, d’un seul souffle, s’exclamerait: servez vous!” (“If tomorrow Vladimir Putin…should invade Georgia…Western Europe, with one breath, would exclaim: help yourself!”) Two years later it came to pass precisely as he had envisioned. And in earlier books such as The Tears of the White Man and The Temptation of Innocence, Bruckner addresses the pervasive cultural drift toward self-abasement, political weakness and the glorification of the Third World, especially Islam, at the expense of our own survival. “The future of the West,” he laments, “is self-destruction.”

True, in La tyrannie de la pénitence, the most recent of his political books (his 2009 offering, Le Paradoxe amoureux, deals with the sexual paradoxes of the current age), Bruckner seems to go against his own grain, downplaying the apocalyptic mode of thought. “Il existe chez les Modernes,” he writes, “une fascination pour le thème du déclin…qui seduit à la fois les experts et les moralistes…Quiconque en caresse l’idée se voit comme l’intelligence supérieure qui a saisi le processus caché de l’Histoire. Annoncer…la décadence d’un empire vous pose en prophète.” (“There exists among the Moderns a fascination for the theme of decline…which seduces at the same time both the experts and the moralists…Whoever caresses the idea sees himself as a superior intelligence who has grasped the hidden processes of History. Announcing… the decay of an empire makes you seem like a prophet.”)

How fascinating that all the writers mentioned in 'New Philosophy' are Jewish. The Jews have been – due to thousands of years of persecution as the "other" – sensitized to the impending signs of societal breakdown and danger. They are the canary in the coal-mine.

There is an argument being put forth by European Leftists worried about the gradual awakening of their citizens, that Muslims are "the new Jews of the 1930s." It is a mindless analogy, grounded not in reality but in propaganda. The Jews in the 30s were not blowing up buses or knocking down skyscrapers.

Our pathological fear of offending the "other" – that is any "other" other than the Jews – has blinded us to the same demographic nightmare that overwhelmed the indigenous Christian populations of the Middle East after the Muslim conquests. Like the Copts of Egypt, whose leader recently asserted that Christians in Egypt are "guests" in spite of their status as the original inhabitants…all because Muslims are now an intolerant majority and demand such abject expressions of submission, we'll see a day sometime later this century when native Europeans are similarly designated as "guests" in their own country….as the NEW "other".

Sadly, Native Europeans shouldn't expect reciprocal treatment from the new majority, for in Islam, there's no theological mandate to treat religious minorities as equals. Quite the contrary, there is only dhimmitude and submission.

    • crackerjack

"How fascinating that all the writers mentioned in 'New Philosophy' are Jewish. "

Not only the French "New Philosophy", in fact worldwide the spearhead of Islamobhobia is Jewish. Pipes in the US, Steyn in Canada, Broder in Germany, Levy in France. It's just one new branch of the Israel Lobby – Exporting the Israel/Pali conflict abroad.

      • MixMChess

Of course anyone who speaks out against Islamism is a "Jew," as is Ayyan Hirsi Ali, Geert Wilders, Sheik Palazzi, Robert Spencer, Brigitte Gabriel, and Joseph Farah.

Isn't it the fakestinians that export the conflict to bomb synagogues in Brazil?

      • Homerjay

Mark Steyn is not Jewish, crackerjack brain. And talk about spreading the "Israel-Palestine Conflict" worldwide, you would have to be blind not to have noticed the 1972 Munich Olympics, the numerous airplane hijackings of the 1970s-80s, the attacks agains synagogues and Jewish social centers world wide, etc. But you just go right ahead and ignore all that. Facts, although they are very hard things, apparently don't mean much to you.

      • Chezwick_Mac

The implication here is that Pipes, Steyn, Levy and Broder – because they are Jews – HAVE to be agents of Israel, working exclusively on behalf of the Jewish state. You preclude the possibility that they have other interests and loyalties – including to the countries of their origins, to Western Civilization, to the concept of freedom.

This narrow prism through which you see these Jewish intellectuals is – in-and-of-itself – a form of anti-Semitism. You ought to be ashamed.

      • ajnn

"The spearhead of Islamophobia is Jewish".

        If only !!!

"It's just one new branch of the Israel Lobby " – Wow !!! Once again, its the jews who are responsible.

The presence of many jews in this coherent and intellectually sophisticated movement is not surprising. Jews have been at the forefront of every intellectual and social movement of the last 100+ years – some good, some not so good.

      • fredfarkel

Also, the Holocaust is a myth and other non-sensible things are said. You would ignore missles being fired into a souvereign nation of Isreal, the joke that is the Palestinian cause (how long can a peace process take). Understand over a tillion dollars has been spent for Palestinians, and what do they have to show for it: Povert and despair, for like Yassir Arafat stealing alot of the aid money, now we have just plain hate. By the wa,y how is that other mythical Holocaust working for you, you know, the Armenaian Genocide?

Britisch troops in Basra, German troops in Kirkuk, Dutch troops in Kandahar, Georgian units in Kabul, Norwiegan troops in Hindukush, US units in Bagdad, the US Navy in the Gulf, the Royal Navy of Hormus, The French Airforce over Iraq, The Dutch navy before Lebanon…………….the "west has had it" ? LOL. Levy is a fool and only fools follow fools.

    • stephencuz

Wow how enlightened you are! Israel exported the conflict. I see, they must be behind the London bombings, World Trade Center (both times), Coptic Christians being persecuted, ad infinitum. Yep. You know the truth. It is the Jews fault. Do I have that correct? Is THIS your argument? Define for us un-enlighted exactly what "Islamophobia" is would you? Because I just don't see it. Maybe I'm blinded by all the facts of Islamic barbarianism to see it. But, knowing there are good, knowledgeable people like you around to "teach" us, well now, we can all rest easy. Say, shouldn't you be wearing a brown shirt by now? What a dolt.

      • ajnn

We must not get too emotional in our responses to people like this. Jew-hatred has been a force for centuries.

The Jews are neither the problem nor the solution to the emergent 'demography is destiny' problem in the West.

It should be pointed out that reports first surfaced in the American media about 'muslim unrest in europe' in the 1970's relating to Turkish guest workers in germany. Of course, they turned out to be not only violent anti-democratic but also permanent.

Ignore racists like crackerjelly. He and his kind are impervious to reason. Talk to the normal people.

        • cjk

You a correct. There is no reason to strain oneself trying to argue with someone who's eyes are closed to the truth. Personally I see these idiots as a fitting opportunity to ridicule, because that's actually something that they understand and listen to.

The West has been occupying and colonizing the Muslims since Napoleon invaded Egypt. Today, the West dominates the Islamic world militarily, can invade and occupy at will and could wipe any Muslim nation of the map in a days notice. Terror is the spasm of the conquerd, not of the conqueror.

        • ziontruth

"The West has been occupying and colonizing the Muslims since Napoleon invaded Egypt … Terror is the spasm of the conquerd, not of the conqueror."

We got here a Ward Churchill wannabe, telling us how "some people push back" against the "little Eichmanns." Come on, you want to say that, I know you do. You're a treasonous apologist for Islamic imperialism just like all Marxists are. There ought to be a law against the likes of you.

"Today, the West dominates the Islamic world militarily,"

Maybe, but the Islamic world is getting to dominate the West demographically, and that's a far more lethal event. It's why even George W. Bush wasn't good enough: Fixated on the old model of a clash of arms, he never paid attention to the real threat, the stealth jihad of demographic overpowerment, aided and abetted by West-hating and Jew-hating Marxist apparatchiks like you.

If you want peace, prepare for war (old model); but if you want demographic survival, outlaw Marxism and deport all the Muslims (new model). The alliance of Marxism and Islam is the greatest threat to liberty everywhere.

          • crackerjack

"..the Islamic world is getting to dominate the West demographically…?

Sounds like there are an "Elders of Islam" somwhere, organizing the influx of Muslims to overrunn the West. Where did you pick up such a stupid notion? The NSDAP preaced the same concerning Jews. Goebbels preached the inferior race, Islamobhobics preach the inferiour religion and culture.
Europe has 15 anti-Muslim partys with 4 involved in goverment, but not a single Muslim party. Muslims are the toilet and street cleaners of Europe, not the rulers.
You are confusing Europe with Israel. Israel and Zionism, through their stupid expansion and settlement policys, have imported their own personal Trojan Horse of millions of Muslims.

          • Spirit_Of_1683

Muslims are the toilet and street cleaners of Europe, not the rulers.

Try telling that to a Serb.

          • crackerjack

The Serbs were sacrificed for Western expansion into former the Russian/Soviet sphere of interrests in Souteastern Europe. Islam was less than a footnote in this conflict

          • ziontruth

"Sounds like there are an 'Elders of Islam' somwhere, organizing the influx of Muslims to overrunn the West."

No elders of any kind needed. Just the Koranic mandate to turn the whole world Islamic, with the added help that the indigenous Europeans breed so little. Oh, and I forgot a minor detail: Marxism-influenced governments that open the gates to immigration without restriction.

"Israel and Zionism, through their stupid expansion and settlement policys,"

The Jews are the indigenous people of Palestine, and Zionism is their national resettlement movement. By no means can Jews in Palestine be conquerors or invaders–that is definitionally impossible.

So you must be a worshiper of the pedophile profit and his moondemon spirit allah?

          • crackerjack

I'm an atheist. Religion belongs in the home. In the public, it has caused enough misery, especially monotheism.

          • Spirit_Of_1683

And we all know that some of the biggest mass murderers of the 20th century like Stalin, Mao-tse Tung and Pol Pot were atheists.

Thanks, Spirit of 1683, you saved me that reply.

          • cjk

I contend that ignorance such as lumping all religions together as a group even though their teaching in the case of Mohammedanism and Christianity are polar opposites has caused far more death and destruction.

        • Spirit_Of_1683

Since when was Turkey a part of the West? Those Muslim nations you're on about were part of the Ottoman Empire, and non-Muslim nations like present day Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia spent centuries under Turkish domination from the 14th and 15th centuries until the 19th century. But then again, history isn't your strongest subject, eh crackhead.

        • stephencuz

And yet we haven't "taken over" any territory and claimed it ours. What are we waiting for? As a conqueror we're really making a poor job of it.

    • ajnn

Huh? Perhaps it ight be constructive to engage the actual arguments of your opponants.

For example, demography is a powerful force that shapes the world. Europe has lost the 'demographic conflict'. It is a near-certainty that Europe will be Muslim-majority by 2050.

Russia will be Muslim majority by 2025.

Temporary troops wearing a uniform will not have any impact on the 'demography is destiny' problem in Europe.

      • crackerjack

  • imnokuffar

I sometimes despair at the self defeating talk aired on this blog, much as I like the blog itself. The West is slowly but surely awakening to the Muslim menace and to the menace of immigration generally. Just recently we have the SD in Sweden getting 6% of the vote, we have the BNP in Britain with 2 MEPs and a rapidly growing party, the Front National in France gaining ground, in Italy the Northern League, Jobbik in Hungary (anti semites though they are), The Danish Peoples Party in Denmark and the list is growing. Who would have believed that SWEDEN of all places would elect to parliament MPs who are so out of step with the MSM and PC/Multiculturalism. There is a growing disillusionment with virtually all the established parties in Europe, people are waking up and smelling the coffee. Don't write off the peoples of Europe just yet, you may be in for a very pleasant suprise or unpleasant suprise depending on your political stance.

    • bostonian

There is some truth in what you saying, but numbers to small + next elections 4 years away (meaninig so many new arrivals)+policies formed in Brussels +Europe does not procriate.

    • ajnn

Quite possibly it is already too late for europe. "Demography is Destiny" and Europe may have passed the tipping point.

    • fmobler

Thanks for the reminder that there are reasons for hope. In fact, I am really hopeful about what it happening in Europe, the US and Australia (Canada seems to be the complete retard).

One the defining virtues of the West is that we actually believe in the meaningfulness of being human. (Thanks to Christianity for inventing the idea that I am a person and so are you). We do not think that collectives and groups have a metaphysical hold on individuals, even as we acknowledge that culture often deeply constraints the choices one actually has. So we tend to think that human rights inhere to the individual. This makes us really slow to understand the borg-like threats of Islam (and before that communism and its nasty little sister, fascism) where the very idea of "personhood" is not taken seriously. It happened before that 300 years or so of horrible aggression against Christendom was met with inaction.

One of the other virtues of the West is that, if we are a bit slow to notice an existential threat, we can fight like rabid pit bulls once we finally catch on. We are starting to catch on.

  • Rifleman

If we believed the French every time they said that the West would be gone for over half a century.

    • stephencuz

Yes, you are right my friend. But sooner or later they may get it right. I fear this time they may just be.

      • Rifleman

Looking at history it's a near certainty, but vigilance and action, not fear, is the way to live and deal with it. Our enemies aren't worried about those that fear them, they worry about people who don't and won't back down from their aggression.

    • ajnn

I likie it. I bow to no one in my 'Francophobia'. I have some catching up to do on my 'Islamophobia', but enough hard work and a good attitude and I will catch up !!!

      • Rifleman

It's not a phobia, but I do pick on the French and buy as little from them as possible. They aren't all bad, but enough are that they most often drown out those who aren't.

  • Torwald

Islam is one threat, but its not the only one. Perhaps in itself, it is enough to destroy Western values, but we also have to worry about other huge gorillas in the room. Take a look at the Chinese and Russian military buildup, for example. They may not be socialist economically anymore, but if we had no nukes, we would already be speaking Mandarin or Russian.

  • John Beatty

The French have been poudly proclaiming the "end to the West" since the last Burbon king died. This is nothing new.

The success of Islamic propaganda is a function less of the genius of the Muslim than the combination of oil money and irrational 'cultural elites'.

  • Lisa_H

This is very well written. I do believe that more and more of us here in the West are waking up to reality, thanks to the writings and talk of thoughtful people. It is encouraging and we cannot know what is around the corner, but we need to be prepared for any eventuality.

  • Smithy

In maybe 20 years the first (major) stream of refugees fleeing the Islamic horde in Europe will arrive on our tarmacs. Bet. Bet you anything, anything, the leftist scum in the media and gov will make sure the doors are wide open only for the appeasement crowd, and closed to the decent patriots. They will have nowhere to go, to protect their daughters from being raped or disfigured.

One thing the world has never benefited from is warnings from the French. With Nazis on their doorstep, all they could do was whisper to one another being their newspapers as they sipped their coffee in the plazas. Ask Chagall or the hundreds of other French artists, scientists, writers, philosophers, industrialists, who fled during the 30s. Chagall said during a speech in 1944,

“The enemy jokes, saying that we are a "stupid nation." He thought that when he started slaughtering the Jews, we would all in our grief suddenly raise the greatest prophetic scream, and would be joined by the Christian humanists. But, after two thousand years of "Christianity" in the world—say whatever you like—but, with few exceptions, their hearts are silent…. I see the artists in Christian nations sit still—who has heard them speak up? They are not worried about themselves, and our Jewish life doesn't concern them.”

Compare what have the French ever done for Jews or Israel, with what have they done against?

    • cjk

These Frenchmen are in a unique position in the Western World and we should listen to their words accordingly. Their country is forefront in the process of being swallowed by mindless, bloodthirsty, pedophile worshiping, maniacs and that counts for something. The reality of the horror they are experiencing are beyond my comprehension at this point, therefore I believe that they probably have insights which would escape those of us in the USA.

  • Robert Marchenoir

"What have the French ever done for Jews or Israel ?" (Carl M)

Saved most of those living in France during WW2 (notably by hiding them from the Germans). Whereas in many other European countries, the proportion was inverted, with most Jews being deported to their deaths.

The new left is akin to putting a car alarm in a Trabant! Delicious line Mr. Solway! I'll be using it on my radio show and mention your name. Seriously though, many French writers have predicted the downfall of the west over the years, true. However, this time we're facing a new (old) and insidious threat. One that doesn't wear a uniform or an ill fitting suit and ready to use our own freedoms against us from the inside. The French and a few other people of European countries have had more time to evaluate the threat and, as such, they should be listened to closely.

'Researchers say babies born with low vitamin D levels may have an increased risk of developing schizophrenia later in life.
'The three-year study tested blood samples from babies in Denmark and found having low vitamin D levels doubles the risk of developing the disorder.
    'The findings could encourage pregnant women to get more sunshine or take a vitamin D supplement. {And NOT wear a burka or niqab! – dda}
'Professor John McGrath, from the Queensland Brain Institute, says the study is further evidence of vitamin D's link to brain development.
"Many years ago we thought it was totally implausible to prevent schizophrenia, it seemed to be such a mysterious, poorly understood group of illnesses," he said.
"I think this new result suggests that maybe it will be possible to prevent schizophrenia."

    • muslimpoxbyebye

Now, let's think about it. Yemen. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states. Afghanistan. The more rigidly-Muslim Muslims, everywhere; generations of women totally covered-up whenever they go outside. The likelihood that many or most of those women are Vitamin D deficient is high; and if they're Vitamin D deficient during pregnancy, then their babies' brain development may be seriously compromised.
It should be noted that at the end of a news report on women being forced to wear hijab in Gaza University
      the following information was included:
'Lack of Vitamin D because of veils”
'A Jordanian study published this week asserted that 87% of women between the ages of 18 and 70 in Jordan suffer from a lack of Vitamin D as a result of insufficient sun exposure and not enough milk consumption.
'The researchers linked this phenomenon to wearing the hijab. 'According to the findings, **92% of women who wear a hijab suffer from a lack of Vitamin D** 'This figure increases to 96%, according to the survey, when it comes to women who cover their faces as well with a niqab."

      • muslimpoxbyebye

Put that information together with the results of the Danish study and it appears that those who wear the Muslim female slave rag, whatever form of it they wear, stand a very good chance of scrambling their babies' brains. SO THE NEXT TIME YOU SEE A WOMAN IN A BURKHA REMEMBER ISLAM IS FORCING WOMEN TO LITERALLY BREED VIOLENT IDIOTS.

These are all the legitimate heirs of Camus, who broke with French intellectuals to stand against the tyranny of Communism. Camus learned and earned his pessimism by being one of the very few to join the Resistance early on, with no hope of victory. Whittaker Chambers was also a pessimist, stating that he believed he was joining the losing side when he broke with Communism. They are both examples of the need to avoid the sin of optimism, but never to submit, yield, or be overcome. There is always hope.

Levy is fun. But the last word has not been spoken. The arguments always look to me like a rehash of Oswald Spengler. As far as decline is concerned I would concentrate on Toynbee. Paraphrasing him, civilizations go down the tubes under three influences. First, external barbarians (he calls them proletarians). Second, internal barbarians. Third, elites adopt the viewpoint of the internal barbarians. All three of these seem to be in place.ll The challenge is there but the response is missing.
