Obama, Israel and the Genesis Prediction

Most observers, right or left, pro-Israel or anti-Israel, would agree that Israeli-American relations are the worst they have been in memory. Among the many indications is that only 9 percent of Jewish Israelis think President Barack Obama’s administration is more pro-Israel than pro-Palestinian, according to a Smith Research poll taken during the last week of March on behalf of The Jerusalem Post. Given how much Israelis love and admire (and emigrate to) America, this level of mistrust is all the more remarkable.

Commentators on the left, of course, blame Israel. For them, this is a no-brainer; blaming Israel is as natural as breathing. One just does it. Furthermore, Israel is headed by a conservative prime minister, and America is presided over by the most pro-left president in its history.

Meanwhile, commentators on the right are virtually unanimous in supporting Israel. This is not simply an anti-Obama, pro-conservative-Netanyahu reflex, however. It stems from a variety of reasons:

First, Israel is our staunchest ally. Among other things, Israel votes with us in the United Nations more often than any other country, and it provides us with uniquely important technological know-how and intelligence.

Second, conservatives’ values are closer to Israel’s values than perhaps those of any other nation. As President Harry Truman said, “Israel is the embodiment of the great ideals of our civilization.”

Third, while a rift with Israel hurts Israel, it hurts America at least as much (as we shall see) and does not make Palestinians any more likely to make peace with the Jewish state. Recall, the Palestinians unleashed mass terror against Israel after a left-leaning Israeli prime minister agreed to give the Palestinians 97 percent of the territory conquered in 1967 and 3 percent more from Israel itself. Why, then, would the Palestinians make peace with Israel now, when half of the Palestinians are governed by Hamas, whose charter calls for Israel’s destruction? Because Obama humiliated the Israeli prime minister during the latter’s visit to Washington — over Israeli plans to build 1,600 apartments in Jerusalem?

Fourth, the greatest international threat today emanates from Iran, a threat that will be exponentially increased if Iran is not prevented from developing nuclear weapons. A weakened Israel means an emboldened Iran. And this frightens conservatives more than it does the world’s left and Obama.

Finally, there is a fifth reason tens of millions of Americans, many conservative commentators, support Israel and worry about America if American support for Israel wanes.

To the left in America and around the world, this reason is dangerous nonsense. But for a vast number of America’s Christians, many Jews and even many non-religious conservatives, it is deeper than any military or political reason. The reason is based on a verse in Genesis in which God, referring to the Jewish people, says to Abraham: “I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you.”

One need not be a Jew or Christian or even believe in God to appreciate that this verse is as accurate a prediction of the future as humanity has ever been given by the ancient world. The Jewish people have suffered longer and more horribly than any other living people. But they are still around. Their historic enemies are all gone. Those who cursed the Jews were indeed cursed.

And those who blessed the Jews were indeed blessed. The most blessed country for more than 200 years has been the United States. It has also been the most blessed place Jews have ever lived in. Is this a coincidence? Many of us think not.

Those who curse the Jews today seem to be cursed. The most benighted civilization today is the Arab world. One could make a plausible case that the Arab world’s preoccupation with Jew-hatred and destroying Israel is decisive in keeping the Arab world from progressing. The day the Arab world makes peace with the existence of the tiny Jewish state in its midst, the Arab world will begin its ascent.

The converse is what worries tens of millions of Americans: The day America begins to abandon Israel, America will begin its descent.

Israel shares America’s values, such as liberty, an independent judiciary, a free press, freedom of religion, free speech and women’s equality. The Arab and Muslim worlds have none of these. Those facts — and America’s Judeo-Christian roots — make support of Israel, no matter what the Arab and Muslim “street” feels about America, a moral lynchpin of American foreign policy.

This administration’s desire to have America liked in the Arab and Muslim worlds therefore has to mean altering that lynchpin. You cannot protect Israel and strive to be liked in the Arab and Muslim worlds at the same time. And you cannot weaken that protection without weakening America’s moral values, which form the basis of America’s greatness.

Even aside from compromising America’s moral essence, weakening American support of Israel will only strengthen the America-hating Islamists. The notion that the primitive monsters of the Taliban, Hamas, al-Qaida and the like will become pro-American — or just stop attacking America – if America weakens its support of Israel betrays an ignorance of evil that is frightening.

So there is nothing to gain — and America’s soul to lose — by weakening, or by even seeming to weaken, American support for Israel.

In 1968, Eric Hoffer, the longshoreman turned philosopher and author of the classic work “The True Believer,” wrote in The Los Angeles Times:

“The Jews are alone in the world. If Israel survives, it will be solely because of Jewish efforts. And Jewish resources. Yet at this moment Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally. We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us.”

Hoffer concluded: “I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us. Should Israel perish, the holocaust will be upon us.”

Genesis was right.

  • Turbeaux

Even if we abandoned Israel in a very misguided attempt to make Arabs and Muslims like us, it would fail because, per their religion, Muslims are mandated to hate our kafir infidel guts no matter what. This simplistic notion that we can somehow make Arabs and Muslims like us arises out of a very fundamental misunderstanding of what Islam really is, what it inculcates, and the grave threat it presents to freedom throughout the world.

    • Jim C.

The idea that anyone serious is proposing we "make the Muslims like us" is childish and absurd. This is diplomacy, not junior high. Diplomacy is managing tensions and preventing bloodshed while protecting interests.

Have you ever heard the saying "She just not that into you?" By and large, the Muslim world is not nearly as obsessed with the USA as the gomers of FPM are obsessed with The Muslim Threat. In fact, most polls show Muslims view the US in a generally favorable light. Obviously, they don't like some of our foreign policy choices, and many of them are still pathologically upset about Israel. But there is evidence, including a recent editorial in an Iranian paper, that shows educated Muslims are growing tired of scapegoating Israel for their own nations' problems.

"Israel is our staunchest ally"–why this continual canard? We ARE allies, and that will NOT change whether Obama is in office or not. But Israel is no more "staunch" than any of our other allies.

      • Turbeaux

“The idea that anyone serious is proposing we "make the Muslims like us" is childish and absurd. This is diplomacy, not junior high. Diplomacy is managing tensions and preventing bloodshed while protecting interests. “

Actually, you haven’t been paying attention. Either that or you are extremely delusional. Obama began kissing the Islamic world’s butt immediately upon taking office and he hasn’t stopped yet, and at the same time he had been deliberately throwing our most valuable ally in the Middle East under the bus and abandoning them during their time of greatest need.

”Have you ever heard the saying "She just not that into you?" By and large, the Muslim world is not nearly as obsessed with the USA as the gomers of FPM are obsessed with The Muslim Threat. In fact, most polls show Muslims view the US in a generally favorable light. Obviously, they don't like some of our foreign policy choices, and many of them are still pathologically upset about Israel. But there is evidence, including a recent editorial in an Iranian paper, that shows educated Muslims are growing tired of scapegoating Israel for their own nations' problems.”

Have you ever heard the term “loon?” The reality is not only are you totally oblivious to the threat that emanates from Islam, but obviously you are still stuck on stupid because it is very apparent that you’ve swallowed the proverbial garbage that Islam is a Religion of Peace™ being hijacked by a tiny minority of extremists nonsense. Oh yeah…you can stick those polls where the sun doesn’t shine, as the word gullible doesn’t go far enough to accurately describe your naivety. In addition, excuse me if I don’t buy into the same self-hating blame America first nonsense you do, because I happen to know better, and, finally, the reality is the overwhelming vast majority of Muslims both living in the Islamic world and those that have infiltrated the West are completely obsessed with the destruction of Israel and the annihilation of Jews. What are you smoking, because it is obvious that you live in a fantasy world?

"Israel is our staunchest ally"–why this continual canard? We ARE allies, and that will NOT change whether Obama is in office or not. But Israel is no more "staunch" than any of our other allies.”

It’s not a canard; it’s the truth! Only you are too ignorant, too naïve, and too gullible to know it. As a matter of fact, no other staunch ally has been more loyal and valuable to the USA than the state of Israel, and a strong and viable Israel is of critical strategic importance to the USA.

        • Jim C.

"No other ally has been more loyal"–right. And I'm the Giants' 'biggest fan.' A fatuous and unserious claim.

I'm not drinking the "religion of Peace" kool-aid. I think Islam is more cult than religion. It just happens to be the cult of 1/3 of the world's population. You may have no moral qualms with wiping them out. I'm a moral human being, so I balk at the idea. Again, there's this concept called "diplomacy…"

It's funny how, when talking about American interests, people here suddenly bring up Israel as if they are one and the same. I'm all for Israel, God bless them, they are an important ally. Sometimes when they are taking care of their own interests, though, that can be contrary to our own interests–as they recently were according to not just Mr. Obama but Mr. Petraeus. Funny–I didn't see many articles lambasting Gen. Petraeus as an appeasing dhimmi traitor…but that's because you guys have no real principles you stand for–just power.

The prophecy that is still to be fulfilled is the following…and could be sooner than some think.

    Isaiah 17

    Prophecy about Damascus

    1The oracle concerning Damascus
"Behold, Damascus is about to be removed from being a city
And will become a fallen ruin.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Doggwood Doggwood

I had heard that prophecy, and I've got to hear the full interpretation by scholars. Yes, the destruction of Damascus is prophesied, and this event has not yet occurred…but is there any clarity of the context?

      • Kevin

        Amos 1:4ff

I will kindle a fire in the palace of Ben-Hadad.

Damascus is perhaps the oldest city on the planet NEVER destroyed in war; yet Isaiah tells us that it's day is coming…
Syrian gas vs Israeli nukes, what odds do I get.

Nevermind the scholars, read it and ask God what He thinks.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Doggwood Doggwood

Reading for oneself is good. But in my experience (perhaps because of my secular upbringing), essential details go over my head without hearing the discussion of people more scholarly than I. For example, with Moses and the burning bush, a key element is that Moses examined the bush after noticing that the bush burned but was not consumed. This was part of the test of whether Moses was up to the task: That he was aware that not only was there a bush on fire (which might have been a natural phenomenon), but there was a supernatural aspect to that fire. Once this was pointed out to me, it made perfect sense. But if I'd read it on my own, I would have merely come away with the model of a burning bush that talked, and missed the lesson that wisdom comes from observation.

I think Obama has an idenity issue. He's torn between Communist & Islamic ideaologies. They're not compatible of course but Islam hates Jews & otherwise they both hate the same things about western civilization & Capitolism.

  • Kim Bruce

Turbeaux hits the nail right on the head.
We cannot make the Muslim like us. It is against all Islamic beliefs. It is written…

"O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people." Qur'an 5:51 and elsewhere in the Qur'an, over and over again. The descendants of Muhammad are indoctrinated from a very early age in this belief.

Obama and Kings2- 32-34 predicts the outcome of the Obama (king of Assytia Kenyan) in the near future. If the G-d of Israel is the intelligent designer of all things, his prophets have spoken of these days and the future of Israel. Be not afraid….

Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come unto this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast a mound against it.

    לג בַּדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר-יָבֹא, בָּהּ יָשׁוּב; וְאֶל-הָעִיר הַזֹּאת לֹא יָבֹא, נְאֻם-יְהוָה. 33

By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come unto this city, saith the LORD.
    לד וְגַנּוֹתִי אֶל-הָעִיר הַזֹּאת, לְהוֹשִׁיעָהּ–לְמַעֲנִי, וּלְמַעַן דָּוִד עַבְדִּי

Or worse, what will you say when iran hands off a nuclear device to a terrorist entity that deploys it on American soil?

  • louann

Just yesterday I made a comment on an article in which I stated that I believe that if Israel were wiped off the face of the earth, as her opponents wish, that the end of the world would be at hand. Today I read that I'm not alone in this terrifying premonition. God help us all.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/WildJew WildJew

I agree with Dennis Prager except for one thing. It was not Obama who massively began cursing Israel. It was George W. Bush. Only conservatives had their collective heads in the sand; still do. Obama is much, much worse than Bush. Yet, if it were not for Bush cursing Israel, lying about Israel, lying about Islam, propagating this Islam is a religion of peace / the terrorists hijacked a peaceful religion mantra and his so-called "war on terrorism," etc., there would be no Obama in the White House. Had Bush been a man of honor and decency; had he been honest with the public; more importantly, had conservative writers, activists, talk show hosts like Mr. Prager held Bush accountable for his many lies – for his cursing Israel – we might not have the unthinkable in the White House. Conservatives were silent. Or worse, they were complicit.

Islamism has been the source of a constant Islamic imperialist march for 1400 years. Now that iran is Islamist, it assumes the role of prime Islamic imperialist. Hence we see the mullahs supporting insurgencies against democratic governments in Lebanon and Iraq, supporting terrorist entities Hamas and Hezbollah, b eging freindly with other non democratic, oppresive regimes in Syria and Venezuela, and who knows what else?

Also, back-off on the name-calling, show a little maturity.

The authors insight is undeniable. I would however point out that his reasoning is not contingent alone on the verse of Genesis he quotes. Genesis through the last of the Apostolic writings concerns the path of mankind.. I find it to be the road map containing all the wrong and right turns which points out bridges and pitfalls It is our eventual destination. If it is read and understood with an open heart it will be a beacon. Its validity cannot be proven by scholars to a closed heart, nor can it be changed by scoffers.

The Jew, whether he likes it or not, is a brother to America. It is like we grew up in the same family, but have gone our own way in some things, but we are so close that when they hurt I hurt. Attempts have been made to rid the U.S. of Christians who have biblical knowledge and believe the Bible, but there are still more of us than them. Even if we have a foreigner as president in the White-house with all his Marxist associates, most of us will not let them destroy the Jews or Israel. There was a time when so-called scholars and students twisted the words of the Apostle to turn some people against the Jews. Be wise: Study and beware of those who love to pick an choose what will support their hatred.

First of all it's not Genesis we should be focusing on it's Revelations. It is unfolding before our eyes.

Christians beliefs come from the Bible which includes the Hebrews and the basis of their faith is the same as ours. Same GOD everything, one exception. They have rejected their Messiah, Jesus Christ.

America is blessed because we are protective of Israel that is true. But the main reason America has been blessed is because we WERE a Christian nation. At least 1/2 of our founding fathers graduated from Seminary School and even more were believers.

Today, we Christians have become weak. We are the salt without savor. We are and will be trampled under foot for not keeping the faith.

Israel has a real problem now. The ungodly run this country now and seeing Israel be defeated isn't something that bothers them at all. Especially with a Muslim president.

Thankfully, Obama does not make policy decisions by reffering to Genesis or any other fable or ancient parable. This is not the crisis the screamers are making it out to be. If the leader of any second-rate power blindsides or insults the VP during a state visit, that leader should fully expect a hand-slapping. Which is all this really amounts to.

Armegedon will have to wait another day.

    • Democracy First

I wish that's all it was. First, it was just a typical announcement of review of development permit applications in a Jewish area of Jerusalem.

      Bear in mind that:
      1) this spot was designated as Israel's under UN resolution 181 that created that country. It only fell into Arab hands because Jordan maintained occupation of it, given the armistice lines of 1948 Arab war to destroy the new born Jewish state

      2) the consideration to add to housing there was perfectly consistent with the prior arrangement between Israel and Obama that only building activity outside Jerusalem would be suspended.

In truth, then, the announcement merited no comment at all.

So why, then, did Obama make such a big deal when it was he who was breaking the arrangement? Why was Netanyahu's apology – which wasn't reasonable to offer anyhow – rejected? Why did Hillary Clinton a week later dress down Netanyahu, details deliberately leaked? Why was the prime minister of Israel humiliated at the WH by the president when the leaders of nations that despise democracy and the US are treated deferentially?

The answer is seen in the following comment of V.D. Hanson's:

      March 30, 2010
      Israel: One of Many
      by Victor Davis Hanson
      NRO’s The Corner

Some strong supporters of both Obama and Israel are disappointed in the latest hysterical Biden-Clinton-Obama smack-down over the settlement issue. But why, I don't know — this is a logical, not an aberrant, development from President Obama.

Once it was thought to be unprincipled guilt-by-association for pro-Israeli, anti-Obama groups to question candidate Obama’s dubious associations; after all, Reverend Wright, Rashid Khalidi, Samantha Power, et al. were all on record as hostile to the Jewish state. Few likewise seemed to take note when a key Obama campaign foreign policy advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, in September 2009 suggested that the U.S. might, and perhaps should, shoot down Israeli planes over Iraq on their way to Iran: e.g., “If they fly over, you go up and confront them. They have the choice of turning back or not. No one wishes for this but it could be a Liberty in reverse.” Then there was the nomination of Charles Freeman. And of course the present outreach to the two most terrorist-friendly regimes in the Middle East, theocratic Iran and authoritarian Syria. Someone from Mars might conclude that the United States has spent far more effort in courting Ahmadinejad and Assad than Netayanhau.

Each of these steps — and there are others — in isolation can be contextualized, but in aggregate they paint a pretty clear picture that for this administration the benefits of supporting Israel are far outweighed by the downside.

So we are watching unfold a sort of Chicago-style realpolitik, flavored with the traditional academic leftist disdain for the Jewish state. The subsequent result is not so much a cut-off of U.S. aid as a subtle shift in perception abroad: Israel’s multiple enemies now are almost giddy in sensing that America is not all that into protecting the Jewish state, intellectually or morally. And given the nature of the UN, given the power of oil, given endemic anti-Semitism, given the collapse of classical liberal thought in Europe (e.g., Britain was far more deferential to Libya in repatriating a supposedly “terminally ill” mass murderer to Tripoli than it is currently with Israel), and given the realpolitik amorality of Russian and Chinese foreign policy, the world as a whole can now far more easily step up its own natural pressure on Israel, at just the moment when it increasingly has no margin of error with a soon-to-be nuclear Iran.

      • trickyblain

It wasn't so much the substance, it was the timing. I don't know whether or not Bibi intended it, but his announcement could be seen by a reasonable person as an attempt to undermine negotiations from the outset. The US wasin the position of brokering those negotitations, and was right to chasten Bibi — for quite a few pragmatic reasons.

VDH conveys doom-and-gloom where there is little or no tangible shift in relations. He also pulls out the shady tactic of repeating Obama's "associations." Never mind that his closest advisor is an IDF vet and his Secretary of State has a long record of strong support for Israel.

        • Democracy First

Bibi did not make an announcement. Some mid level bureaucrat did, in whatever typical low key manner.

There is a reason Israelis, for the first time ever, see an American president as pro-Arab and anti Democratic them. The reason isn't paranoia. It's based on reality.

As Hanson says, those on the left tried to argue that Obama's questionable associations meant nothing. (But if a Republican hung out in a racist against blacks, or anti-Semitic, church, or with people of similarly questioinable character and belief, they'd have sure made a big deal of that.) Given all that has transpired, Hanson says that reflexive, ìt doesn`t mean anything`view has to be once again called into question.

There`s an old joke: Two Jews; three arguments. That explains why some Israelis take a hard line against their government and the Israeli majority. Just as some Americans are anti-American. Hence, Rahm Emanuel.

As for Hillary…she`s a loyal team player. I have a hunch she feels badly and would act differently were she president.

If I signed a peace treaty stating that I would, then I would. I have no love for the Palis, but Israel can't be in a bunker the whole time. I have no illusions that the whole world will love Israel if they did everything they were supposed to, but if they made some sort of settlement with the Palis, based on pre-existing treaties. then it would at least take some of the steam out of the jihad movement, since even most Muslims would rather live in peace.

      • Democracy First

If you're suggesting Israel has not lived up to peace terms, you've simply got to be kidding. The palestinians rejected their own state in 37, 48, immediately following the 67 war, 79, and 2000. It is their rejectionism of ISrael that denies them a state, as per their plan. For they will accept no state that doesn't dit on Israel itself. hence, they refuse to abide peace agreements or negotiate seriously for a state.

Israel, on the other hand, is a democracy with a democratic people's sensibilities and desire for peace. Israelis act as would Americans, French, Canadians – all democrats. Conversely, so would all democrats acts as Israelis in the same situation – or, if anything, they'd act far less tolerantly and restrained, if history is any guide.

Israel should tuck herself in, protect her own borders, forget about protecting the rest of the world, and let the mujahdin fly, pretty soon all non islamic countries will fall on their knees begging Israel to take up where they left off.

abandon Israel, God's holy people at your own peril.

The reality is even though Reagan lent the Muslims aid and support in Afghanistan in their jihad against the Soviet Union, even though GHWB got suckered into fighting a jihad for the House of Saud, Kuwait, and the Gulf States in Gulf War I, and even though Bill Clinton in turn got suckered into fighting the Muslim’s jihads for them in Bosnia and Kosovo, we were still struck on 9/11 by Muslims.

Muslims hate our guts because it is mandated for them to hate our guts, as Islam is a radical totalitarian ideology that governs everything Muslims do down to the way Muslims even go to the bathroom.

As a matter of fact, the notion that Islam is a so-called Religion of Peace™ being hijacked by a tiny minority of extremists is garbage. The reality is Islam is a radical totalitarian ideology with the sole purpose of conquering the world via the imposition of Sharia, and the notion that we can somehow win the hearts and minds of Muslims whether it be in Iraq, or Afghanistan, or the court of public opinion in the Islamic world via throwing Israel to the dogs, is utterly absurd and arises from a very fundamental misunderstanding of what Islam really is.

I rather doubt Obama has any mental health issues. But he is seriously narcissistic, lies almost chronically – certainly deceives and manipulates – and has a runaway ego.

    OBAMA QUOTE:
“…my administration will make all information available to the American people so that they can make informed judgments and hold us accountable”

PLEASE ACCOUNT FOR YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE SIR. The time has come for the President to perform his duty to THIS country and show us his birth certificate. No certificate? Then all of these constitutional crimes go away; the czars, healthcare, all of it. There are too many questions, too many doubts and he has been dodging far too long. Where there is smoke there is fire. The more people that begin asking for the proof, the less he and the major broadcast networks will be able to ignore us as they have done with so many other issues. If there is the slightest doubt in your mind then you too need to be asking. We have let the seemingly small things go and look where that has taken us. I want to talk about it because they are in cover-up mode.

It would be such an easy thing for any one of us to show our birth certificate. Why is it so difficult for him? Why does he treat this country as if he is ashamed of it? Why does he treat our allies as if they are enemies? Why does he encourage Congress to ignore the will of the people? Why did his wife refer to his home country as Kenya? Why will he not release his own school records? Why does he disgracefully bow to the leaders of other countries? Why does he admire dictators from other countries? THIS IS OBAMA’S WATERGATE. There is no need to impeach someone who is not qualified to be president. Everything he has signed, ordered, or acted upon is illegal. So I ask you Obama: WHERE IS YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE?

I think that Israel's position will improve somewhat. Unsdorfer.com reports that the United States Geologic Survey has located about l.6 billion barrels of oil off the shores of Northern Israel, Lebanon and Syria. I believe that the United States should take the billion dollars it now contributes to Hamas through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and devote some of this to helping Israel develop these resources.

God help us to support the State of Israel. The irony is that a majority of believing Christians support Israel and Secular Jews and their Reformed and Conservative brethren are NOT standing up to the threat of IslamoFascism in the world and it's direct threat against Israel and the United States.

Shame! Never Again? You have abandoned God and He will abandon you. God Bless Israel and those who stand with this great Nation.

Although the vast majority of Americans support Israel, we can do little if our corrupt leadership decides to stop meaningful military support. Also, a historical note to Hotstuff, since Iran and Syria have supplied weapons to various terrorist groups in the region to attack Israel and Americans, that would count as acts of aggression. Also, back-off on the name-calling, show a little maturity.

Take the diaper off your head and return to the sand dunes your civilization (if it can even be called that) calls home. In 1400 years YOU have produced nothing but hate and destruction.
