Where Do Jews and Christians on the Left Get Their Values?

Many Americans find it difficult to understand why Jews on the Left — including many who would call themselves “liberal” rather than “Left” — continued to enthusiastically support President Obama after the revelations about the anti-Israel and anti-Jewish views of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the religious mentor and close friend of Obama. This confusion is all the greater now that Obama has humiliated the prime minister of Israel and created the most tense moment in American-Israel relations in memory.

Likewise, many Americans wonder how Democratic congressmen who claim to be faithful Catholics and are pro-life could vote for the health care bill that allows for federal funding of abortions — after opposing it up to the last day.

There is an explanation.

Leftism, though secular, must be understood as a religion (which is why I have begun capitalizing it). The Leftist value system’s hold on its adherents is as strong as the hold Christianity, Judaism and Islam have on their adherents. Nancy Pelosi’s belief in expanding the government’s role in American life, and therefore her passion for the health care bill, is as strong as a pro-life Christian’s belief in the sanctity of the life of the unborn.

Given the religious nature and the emotional power of Leftist values, Jews and Christians on the Left often derive their values from the Left more than from their religion.

Now, of course, most Leftist Jews and Christians will counter that Leftist values cannot trump their religion’s values because Leftist values are identical to their religion’s values. But this argument only reinforces my argument that Leftism has conquered the Christianity and the Judaism of Leftist Christians and Jews. If there is no difference between Leftist moral values and those of Judaism or Christianity, then Christianity is little more than Leftism with “Jesus” rhetoric added, and Judaism is Leftism with Jewish terms — such as “Tikkun Olam” (“repairing the world”) and “Prophetic values” — added.

But if Christianity is, morally speaking, really Leftism, why didn’t Catholics or Protestants assert these values prior to 19th-century European Leftism? And, if Judaism is essentially a set of Left-wing values, does that mean that the Torah and the Talmud are Leftist documents? Or are the two pillars of Judaism generally wrong?

More questions:

Why are almost no Christians and Jews who believe that God is the author of the Bible (or, in the case of Jews, the Torah) on the Left?

Why are so few pro-life Catholic and Protestant Christians on the Left? Do they not care about “the poor”?

Of course, that is what people on the Left believe. As former head of the Democratic Party Howard Dean said, “Our moral values, in contradistinction to the Republicans, is, we don’t think kids ought to go to bed hungry at night.”

They believe such things despite the fact that traditional Protestants and Catholics have created more institutions to take care of the sick and needy than probably any other groups in the world. And despite the fact that religious Americans give more charity and volunteer more time than secular Americans do.

And why have the great majority of Orthodox Jews rejected the Left? For Jews on the Left, the explanation is simple: Orthodox Jews have primitive beliefs and therefore primitive values.

The obvious response is that for the Leftist, all opposition to the Left, secular or religious, is primitive and usually worse (Racist, Sexist, Homophobic, Xenophobic, Ignorant, Bigoted, Intolerant, Mean-Spirited, etc.). So this doesn’t tell us much. What might tell us much is this: With a handful of exceptions, Orthodox Jews know Judaism far better than non-Orthodox Jews do. Given how few of them are Leftist, this would suggest that Judaism and Leftism are indeed in conflict.

But that doesn’t matter to most Jews on the Left because to be a good person (and, to those for whom it matters, to be a good Jew), one need not know Judaism, let alone follow Judaism. One needs only to feel what is right (Leftism is overwhelmingly based on feeling); and, when in doubt, one can determine what is right from The New York Times, not from sacred Jewish texts.

One of the many fundamental differences between Leftism and Judaism concerns evil. Jews and others on the Left (everywhere, not just in America) have a real problem identifying, let alone confronting, evil. Yet, for Judaism, identifying and confronting evil is as basic a Jewish value as exists. That is why, for example, there is no pacifist tradition in Judaism.

Regarding evil, the Psalmist writes — and this is recited in synagogue every Sabbath — “Those who love God — hate evil.” And as regards pacifism, one of the Prophets, Joel (3:10), inverts what became the much more famous quotation of Isaiah and Micah: “Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears.” And later, the Talmud, almost equivalent in importance to the Bible, teaches (Berakhot 58a): “The Torah has said: If a man comes to kill you, rise early and kill him first.”

In contrast, Leftists, including Leftist Jews and Christians:

– were the loudest in condemning President Ronald Reagan when he labeled the Soviet Union an “evil empire.”

– devoted much of their lives to opposing the war in Vietnam, which they labeled immoral even though it was a war against Stalinist tyranny.

– opposed deposing the mass murderer Saddam Hussein. Many even opposed the Gulf War.

– believe that the moral wasteland known as the United Nations is, or must be the greatest force for good on earth, not the United States.

– oppose allowing the American military to recruit on campuses.

And the further Left one goes, the more one demonizes free Israel and supports the dictatorships that wish to destroy Israel.

Indeed, Israel provides the clearest proof of how Leftism is stronger than the Jewishness of most Jews on the Left. Israel is threatened with a Holocaust by Iran and tens of millions of Islamic supporters outside of Iran, and Palestinian society is saturated with the most virulent Jew-hatred since the Nazis. Yet while today’s Jew- and Israel-haters call the Left home, Jews on the Left continue to be proud members of the Left. Such is the power of Leftism, the most dynamic religion in the world for the last 150 years.

And that explains Bart Stupak’s vote, too. In his inner conflict between Catholicism and Leftism, the more dynamic religion won.

The conservatives were trapped into a false belief as though under our great Constitution (and all the Amendments) everything which freely evolves is right and reinforces the Constitution and our country. However, as our Founders noted, it could be right only with the right people (i.e. God fearing people).

In the 20th century the infectious ideas and trends swept the planet: on its own or helped by KGB fallow travellers.

On the top of it, since the 1960s, America physically let in a lot of wrong people, and many came illegally. Summarily, now a half of the country, the University and School systems, the Federal and State bureaucracies, the entire media, some clergy, and partially even the military (!) became anti-American and must be dismantled entirely, if we dream to restore America as she was founded.

In order to preserve what still remains, first we have to achieve secession of at least one or several states, encouraging the God fearing people and patriots to move into these states.

Hear Hear, Alex…Yuri Bezmenov was one of the most authoritative political voices to sound the alarm, and it’s all still valid!

Interesting perspective. I always thought leftism was a mental deficiency brought about by ideological delusion. But I can see the correlation to religion.

However, I think George Orwell had a clearer view of the matter. Which allows for the bizarre explanation of the leftists crying racism while behaving like <i/racists.

  • Tom W.

I have my own theory on leftists, it is a man-made religion equipped with its own logic and theology. These people are no different than scientologist but unlike this movement that begun from the demented mind of L. Ron Hubbard, leftists have a continual rotation of leaders that vie for the praise of their followers.

And just like Scientology, leftist love to recruit celebrities and people of power to enhance the public image of their message. And just like Scientology, leftist have picked-up on the strategy of intimating all its critics as well as using the force of lawsuits as a weapon to destroy the reputations of all who try to get the truth out to the rest of society.

Finally, just like a competing religion, leftists skew socialist agendas by repacking and marketing them as themes like human rights and social justice! And leftist followers are educated to tear down the Mosaic Laws in favour of perverting justice for the few at the expense of the majority! My rebuke to the left is the truth by the way of G-d's laws (quoting from Torah, look at the Jewish text because the Christian variations are different): Exodus 23: 1-3 & 6-8, also Leviticus 19: 9-18. The bible is just too vast a resource to rebuke leftists ideology but the quotes I've reference deal the true essence of being righteous; the leftists have turned those values upside down where the end is justified by their means.

That's why I loathe the left because biblical righteousness is a much different path to social justice than Egalitarianism, which is the road to ruin that the leftist's agenda is based upon!

I believe this as well and I have read many books on this subject. I have came to the conclusion that we are dealing with some kind of political religion. Pointing this out to the left will be hard because they can't think in any other way other than what they were taught. the only way to destroy a religion is to destroy its god which, in their case, happens to be the state.

It is Israeli tanks and jets are killing Palestinian children, destroying their homes and keeping them in concentration camps. It was a Christian nation called Germany that massacred Jews.

The Nazis were not Christian; they were pagan.

"Palestinians" (aka Arabs) have no qualms about killing their own children, whom the wish to be "martyrs." They use children as human shields. They teach their children hatred from infancy on. Have you never heard the propaganda of hate and violence that Muslims drum into their kids?

The reason there is no peace in the Middle East is because hatred of Jews, and of "infidels" generally, is at the heart of Arab and Islamic culture, and has been from the start.

  • Stephen D.

Excellent post Mr. Prager. My only problem is that you didn't mention what first motivates folks to move toward the Left. Isn't some of the draw about what we all really do want in the end? I too want a better world for my children to live in. The difference is that I see what has happened in the past and what approach works best to attain that goal. Also, isn't there something to be said for that "feel good" self induced "pat on the back" that one gets for spouting such things as " we don’t think kids ought to go to bed hungry at night.” Then believing that this is the true and altruistic position, how could they help but to see anyone else as an enemy to that goal and one to be opposed at all costs? The brilliantly evil induction of the Left into believing that they, by way of their own efforts "shall be as God" in that they will care for the poor, homeless, downtrodden, et al. and anyone not on board with their approach is evil is a difficult dellusion to dispell.

  • von Starkermann

It is pure guilt as the main reason why so many Jews are to the Left in thinking and in actions. Guilt for being Jewish and successful, guilt for killing Jesus, guilt for having the ability to talk to God, guilt for having stood with Moses at Mount Sinai and disbelieving that an all powerful God could have redeemed them from bondage. The first thing A Jew does when successful is to either become a Christian, change their name, or alter their facial looks. Perhaps all three. Jews love to talk about the poor, campaign for the down trodden, march in civil rights parades,go to the West Bank and Gaza and make asses of themselves among the Palestinians, yet would never dream of living with either the Blacks, Browns,Yellows, or anyone in between. You don't see too many of these so called minorities living among the left wing movie producers, actors, directors, etc in Beverly Hills do you?

Put your trust in Pilate “the Jews made me do it”.

      • peachey

Remember that Pilate was simply a tool that G_d used to accomplish His will. He uses both His children and His enemies to accomplish His will. Pilate was a willing and evil pawn in the plan of salvation.

    • Dune Fan

I thought I needed to follow up because sometimes irony is lost on the dull. The Roman Governor Pontius Pilate killed Jesus. Historical records show Pilate was a brutal murder even by Roman standards of the time. When Pilate tries to deflect his guilt for sentencing Jesus to death you assume he is being truthful. You seem to put a lot of faith into what this villain says or is it something else?

      • peachey

Dune Fan, when it really comes down to deciding who killed Jesus, one needs to look at the Bible and the prophecy of the Son of G_ds pending birth. You see it was G_d that killed His own son to save us from sin and give us salvation through grace and faith in Jesus Christ. When I first heard my pastor speak of this it gave me such a feeling of humility and thanks to know that my G_d would sacrifice His only beloved son for me that I have never forgotten it.

        • Dune Fan

          Peachey,
I was trying to respond to an obvious Jew hater von Starkermann and his outrageous statement that Jews are guilty or should feel guilty for Jesus’ death. Whenever I hear this old charge I feel compelled to respond to this misuse of the Bible. And this holy week I was reminded of how evil, cowardly and such a sick sense of humor Pilate had. But I’m afraid that your deeper points will also be lost on a true Jew hater like Starkermann.

"One needs only to feel what is right (Leftism is overwhelmingly based on feeling); …"

A Leftist Christian is a contradiction in terms as is a Leftist Jew. Whatever these mongrels are they are neither Christian nor Jew. They are in violation of the First Commandment. They take their marching orders from the god of feelings or the goddess of altruism or the god of majority vote, not from the author of the Ten Commandments.

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me." is the litmus test for membership in the club. Those who don't pass it are neither Christian nor Jew.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Red47 Red47

Mr. Prager you have turned on the light. I have been frustrated by what I refer to as "feelgood Christianity" for at least three decades. The Christian perspective has slowly changed from the idea that we follow the example of Christ and make the hard choices to the idea that if our view makes someone uncomfortable we must have a wrong view. What a fabulous way to create a willing group of sycophants who will support any ludicrous idea if it is couched in terms of making the feelgood choice

Moses, Abraham and Christ were not metrosexual. They were men who made hard choices because it was the best for mankind and not to show how mean or altruistic they were. Our Bible shows that each Christian is responsible to know the difference between compassion for the less fortunate and "unsaved" and enabling evil. I am having difficulty staying in organized religion because too many denominations have introduce the moral relativity that comes with being too lazy or frightened to discern good from evil and the psychic dissonance of the spiritual atrophy resulting from this lack of discernment makes me very uncomfortable. If we justify getting out of every hard choice we have to make, how do we ever grow up? Perhaps that is the reason I perceive the Leftist nitwittery to be nothing more than mean children bullying the polite child who dresses neatly.
People are not required to be Christians or Jews. I would love to have the ones who think Christianity is about being abused by thugs call themselves something else. The Church of Victims, maybe?

The difference is that the left is peopled by humans who define for themselves who The Creator of All is, what he expects of people, and how large populations are to be managed given what they’ve decided is their particular tradition and religion.

People on the right know that God reveals Himself to us, and in doing so has provided us with the basic rules, wisdom and understanding for helping each individual we encounter with their urgent needs in the moment.

One approach is humanistic and empowers man to take control and set the rules and the agenda. This has worked poorly throughout history.

The other approach is to behave with love toward your neighbor, and live lives of prayer, kindness, charity and service toward others. This has defined and built our nation inspite of individuals committed to violence and bigotry.

The most striking thing to me when I read Obama’s books prior to the election, was his complete lack of love and compassion for his family, his neighbors, or the communities he worked within. There was a cold objectivity that permeates his outlook, an indicator of his true nature, which is not founded in authentic Christian faith, but something else.

  • Kris Lepine

As we "kick God to the curb" He has been replaced with secular political correctness. And the churches who teach and revere the Bible have told us to sit down, shut up and not be offensive. So political correctness and the belief system that "hurting someone's feelings" is the worst thing we can do to another have taken the place of what this country was built on; hard work, charity, love your neighbor as yourself, honesty, integrity and so much more.

Nowhere in the Bible does it tell us to give to the government so the government can give to the poor, the hungry, the widows, etc. We are to do that ourselves and a lot of us do. When are people going to realize THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT SET UP TO BE BENEVOLENT. People who love and believe in God are directed to be benevolent.

I watched a John Stossel show years ago about "giving" in this country. The end result was" people of faith" give more and do it anonymously, Liberals give OTHER'S PEOPLES MONEY THOUGH TAXING & SETTING UP GOVERNMENTAL SYSTEMS.

THAT PRINCIPAL NEEDS TO BE SHOUTED FROM THE ROOFTOPS BECAUSE IT DOESN'T WORK AND MORE NEED TO KNOW IT.

This blog post is relevant, I think: http://moderatesunited.blogspot.com/2010/03/meani

To this I would add that many Jews are atheists, as in Noam Chomsky and George Lakoff, since being "Jewish" is as much an accident of birth as anything. No one who is an atheist will label themselves Christian, but one does see the USE of Christian rhetoric–recently Michael Moore has been doing this–to further political points. This is pure cynicism. Our President did not see fit to join a church until someone pointed out to him it would help his Community Organizing. Then, of course, he joined the church of a Black Marxist, which did not take him far from his ideological home.

Finally, I would comment that it is possible to be genuine liberal-minded as a sincere religious person, and find in the social programs associated with the Democrats genuine compassion. This is not impossible. Likewise, the stereotype of Republicans as heartless is–like most stereotypes–not without some truth.

There is room in the middle. Where I draw the line is when you stop CARING about the effects of your policies. No one can claim that nearly 50 years of Democrats have done the poor and downtrodden of Detroit or Chicago much good. Given that they keep doing the same thing, seemingly indifferent to the pain they are causing, one can conclude that their primary concern is with themselves and their power, not the people they claim they care about. This pattern in malignant.

All we have to do is get rid of the leftist / progressive changes made since then.

The people who truly can't take care of themselves, will still be helped by private charities, which will grow enormously, when people are allowed to keep their income.

Those who can but don't, because it's easier to live on the dole, will have to go to work. And if they don't, and they die, it's nobody's fault but there own.

Right. 100 years ago. Back in the good ol' days of segregation and food borne illness as a result of contamination. God, how we lament for the days of scarlet fever! Back in the days when a person had to work 80 hours a week, every day, just to put food on the table. Back in the days where, instead of hiring illegal immigrants, a factory could just get an eight-year-old to scrape out that boiler.

Ah, how America misses the good days of old. Before those damn progressives came along and ruined everything by telling companies they had to pay a minimum wage. Or that a company might have to partially cover the costs for a worker who lost an arm in a faulty machine. Or that that Black Negro could dine in the same establishment as the rest of us. Post is well intentioned as attempts to discern while falling short. To compare adherents of the left to Orthodox Jews is akin to comparing Aristotle to Rambam. Prima facie and pro forma, the comparison is facile and obfuscates more than clarifies. Orthodox Jews live their committment on a level that is a wet dream for leftists. The study of Torah, living by its precepts, its commandments, dictates is a life that is anathema to the leftist who lives largely by what feels good must be good. The individual as sovereign and Gd is the self are foundational for the leftist where as for the orthodox Jew this is the life of the primitive. The orthodox jew not only splits dialectical hairs on a daily basis; he and she live the dialectic in the synthesis of reason and faith through a life embedded in the eternal torah. The orthodox Jew first, second and last seeks to converse with the eternal while rooted in the historical. The leftist at best is given to the laws of nature while the orthodox jew stands above and beyond these laws by his faith in the historical G that is beyond time.

Back in tribal days, here and around the world, the way that people provided for themselves was by raiding other tribes. There was no guilt because it wasn't as though they had a lot of alternatives. That was their job. Then people turned to making things, growing things, and trading goods and services for their sustenance. I think we're returning to the tribal days. Steal from one tribe to enhance one's own. In this day and age it is the tribes of the I'm entitled stealing from the tribes of I worked for this lead by tribal leaders who want to equalize poverty. Look at the billions poured into the War on Poverty. Has it worked? I say no. Some people have learned that it is their job to get all the government "entitlements" that they can. Free money. I was in an Honors History seminar in the late 1970's in an American Ivy League university. The seminar topic was the history of writing history. We started with the Greeks and ended in the 20th Century. Along the way we read, in translation, goodly swathes of Hegel and Marx.

There were at least two guys in the class who were self-professed "Marxist Communists" – both from comfortably upper middle class homes. During a discussion of one or another of the chunks of Marx we'd read, one commented "Marxism is what was, what is and what will be."

Hearing that, I gleaned the insight Mr. Prager writes about here – that the only way to understand a leftist's adherence to his ideology is to view that ideology as his religion.

  • Redheaded Texan

I've always noted that every human has a deep-seated thirst to quench, a God-shaped hole down in the middle of them. They search and search for something to fill that hole. In this instance, they have filled it with Leftism. It has become their god. But, they are still thirsty; they still lack the satisfaction….because they have filled that hole with the wrong god.

Only GOD can fill the hole inside every human. We can stuff hundreds of things in there – food, alcohol, sex, "things", riches, Leftism…but, the hole will always be there until we admit to ourselves that only God is the answer.

I actually think that a lot of people who HAVE filled themselves with other gods are enraged that they still aren't sated and are defensive – stubborn.

I also believe that it has come a time that God is going to show that He is all-powerful and that He is above all of these other gods. Stand and be terrified at the might of the one true God. Because He is a jealous God and I think he's sick of our unbelief.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/bubba4 bubba4

The hole is an illusion. There is no hole. There is no original sin.

The idea that not believing in god is it's own belief is only something a believer could believe in.

No original sin? Wrong again as usual. Original sin occurred when the first homo sapien developed an ego: a primative sense of self as an indomitable being. He "ate the fruit" as it were. Today folks just drink Lefty Kool aid.

"original sin" is an exclusively Christian idea that we are all bad, or broken or in need of something to get right with the big man upstairs.

As a Christian on the Left, I would answer your question posed in the article title this way: We get our values from the Scriptures. Simply reading Jesus' words and those of James his brother, and of the Didache, gives you an overwhelming sense that the earliest church were most concerned with the transfer of money from wealthy converts, to the common treasury, and also, working for a systematically just world.

Jesus' toppling of the trading stations of Temple moneychangers was the modern equivalent of assaulting the Federal Reserve and Wall Street. Anyone who doesn't understand the Lord's prime goal of 'woe to the rich,' as a means of adancing salvation for the poor, is either ignorant of the text, or in denial.

Of course, that goal is not identical to secular Leftism, which I consider a bastardization of Christ's teaching, but the two are somewhat approximations of each other.

As for Leftist Jews, I think many of them are also reading the same words of Isaiah and of the Proverbs and Psalms that Jesus read. All of these emphasize the divine decree of doing charity and justice and righteousness by helping the poor, the widowed, orphaned and afflicted.

In a secular society, given the choice between the Right wing which serves the wealthy oppressors, and the Left which at least tries to help the weaker members, people of faith who actually know the Bible tend to vote Democrat.

David, what about 2 Thes. 3:10, "If any does not work, neither should he eat."? When govt. gets into giving it becomes self-serving, feeding the bureacracy more than the people. Most inefficient, highly corruptible, deadly like a cancer. When people get on welfare many of them stay on welfare even though perfectly capable of working. We make slaves of men by giving them what someone else has earned and they have not. We are sinful by nature and many of us prefer the lazy way. Poverty was way down until LBJ declared war on it and it mushroomed. When Christ rules in the 1,000 yr. reign, all will work, because He will rule justly.

      • trickyblain

"Poverty was way down until LBJ declared war on it and it mushroomed."

The "facts" say otherwise. The poverty rate when JFK took office was 22.2 percent. It was 19.5 percent when Johnson took office. When he left office, it was down to 12.1 percent, Since, it has only gone over 15 percent one year (15.1 in 1993).

David, I am a progressive muslim and I am in agreement with you. Jesus was not a capitalist, a militarist, or a pro-corporate wright wing zealot. It is a travesty that the so-called wrong-wing Christians promote the interests of the filthy rich, more military, more wars, and big corporations in the name of Jesus. Peace.

      • http://Hollywoodremoteleash.com A Bit Profound

Sounds good Mr.Yuksel, but it's bulshit & like Communism is the path to tyrrany & distruction. You muslims are so good at getting sympathy from the left with your hatred of Capitolism & America. If your able ti inculcate them into your religion by the time you get to the violent part you'll have them seeing Traditional America as an infection on the planet that needs to be cut out.

As a Christian and ex-lefty I would like to ask you something. The Bible tells Christians to help the poor themselves and in their churches, and to spread the word of God to those who suffer. Yet when leftists "help" people they put the government in the church's role and refuse to let the government spread the word of God. The result is lefty Christians don't have to do any of the hard work of helping people, they don't spread the word of God, and they have stripped the church of much of its role while empowering Caesar to not only help the poor, but also to take everything from anyone it wants including the poor. How do you see this as a good thing?

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/bubba4 bubba4

You're just using "leftist" and "lefty" to judge other Christians. Like Dennis Prager, these writers are constantly tweeking their boogeyman so it fits any situation…but it rarely describes real people.

How can you say "they stipped the church" of anything when it's not a group or organization or anything…."left" is just an anticoncept for some of you to stock with everything you hate. It doesn't help you understand anything. Even Dennis Prager is confused what "left christians" believe and he is busy making it up and telling us.

      • http://Hollywoodremoteleash.com A Bit Profound

Because they live oin Opposite Land.

David, a simple question: "the earliest church were most concerned with the transfer of money from wealthy converts, to the common treasury, and also, working for a systematically just world."
When did Christ ever try to FORCE folks to transfer their money to the common treasury? Inevitably, LEFTIST SYSTEMS must and always use FORCE. You then say they more closely work toward a "Just" world. This is incongruent within itself. You Sir, I fear, have become as Lenin would say "a useful idot."

    • Radegunda

The "right wing" believes in voluntary charity, and practices it more than the left does.

Leftists believe in coercive state distribution of resources, which results in less overall wealth and well-being for everyone–except for the apparatchiks who set themselves up as the distributors, and for their friends.

The right believes it's dangerous to gather all political and economic power and all cultural influence into one set of hands. Leftists see nothing wrong with concentrating power in this way—provided that leftists control the levers.

The Bible says "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and unto God that which is God's." The Bible does not suggest that earthly governments set themselves up as exclusive proxies for God. Christianity has always acknowledged a sphere of political authority that is distinct from religious authority.

That is one thing (among many) that Leftists fail to understand.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/bubba4 bubba4

Oh Dennis…you need "left" to be a religion because you don't know how to fight against reason. So you make your "enemies" or anyone that disagrees with you a religious nut, because you are a religious nut who thinks he can define what other people think and feel and then ask himself stupid rehtorical questions to answer.

    • http://Hollywoodremoteleash.com A Bit Profound

"don't know how to fight against reason" Are you crazy; You liberals couldn't reason your way out of a wet paper bag. You all live in Opposite land. You won't even debate a conservative. You just dismiss them with the leftist lie that Concervatives are Racist, Sexist, , Ignorant, Intolerant, Bigoted, Homophobic, Xenophobic Mean-Spirited, Selfish, Evil, War Mongering

    • Radegunda

Hope 'n Change, Hope 'n Change, Hope 'n Change — I guess that's what you mean by reason.
Is "reason" what makes leftists keep trying ideas that have failed every time and led to much misery? And to reject ideas that have a record of success?

  • Wallabee

Mr Prager, this is right on the money, and something I have been saying for years.

However, I would extend the statement to say that most Americans have politicized their religions.

I attended a non-denominational evangelical seminary and was amazed how many of my fellow students identified their religion with right-wing politics. I remember one person bragging about how he was "more conservative than rush limbaugh." I replied that his model should be Jesus and not any current political commentator.

On the other hand, as a Christian, I agree with your assertions that Leftist Christians (and Jews) hold values that have very little in common with the Bible, and my beliefs are far more threatened by Leftists than any Right-wingers.

  • Wallabee

"As a Christian on the Left, …people of faith who actually know the Bible tend to vote Democrat. '

You disprove your own assertions, as it is clear from your posting that you don't have the slightest idea as to what the Bible teaches.

Example: "Jesus' toppling of the trading stations of Temple moneychangers was the modern equivalent of assaulting the Federal Reserve and Wall Street."

This is laughable. The story of Jesus and the Moneychangers was dealing with the sanctity of the Temple… something you have no knowledge about. Jesus did not attack any local secular financial institution. He cleared the Temple grounds of those who were disrespecting it.

Your assertions about Leftist Christians/Jews' concern for the poor has already been addressed by Prager's discussion of traditional Protestant/Catholics who "…have created more institutions to take care of the sick and needy than probably any other groups in the world. "

Studies also show that conservative Evangelicals give more to charities than their Leftist Christian counterparts.

David: "given the choice between the Right wing which serves the wealthy oppressors…" You sound like a walking cliche. Get your facts together before making a fool of yourself by spouting such drivel.

Here take a look at who gave what to whom by the "wealthy oppressors." Really you sound so immature.

The redistribution of wealth which is the underpinning of Black Liberation Theology was preached by Rev. Wright, absorbed by Pres. Obama, and now has been politically implemented by a Leftist Congress using the Civil Justice tactics of Saul Alinsky. These Black Liberation theologies and Civil Justice strategies are more in sync with a Religion of the Left than with Christianity. Their core believers have made the leap that if anyone has reasoned arguments against the Health Care bill, they must be against the redistribution of wealth philosophy of Black Liberation Theology and to be against anything Black is to be racist. Again, this is another example where the religion and tactics of the Left have trumped the religion of Christianity while touting their religious roots.

  • Joe

A good assessment of the Left !!
One point I don't accept however, is that "Leftism has a greater control on its adherants than
Islam". Islam's "holy" books are absolutely binding on Muslims and they require the death of all apostates.(those who leave them) Therefore all Muslims are trapped in their religio-political system under threat of death.
Add to this the fact that an order from their leaders to rise and kill the infidel must be obeyed under penalty of death. Neither Christianity or Judaism (or any other religion probably), has
such a grip on their adherants. For the Muslim, there is no acceptable law and control other than Sharia law with all its horrors. He aims to replace Left-wing and all other systems with Sharia law. The Left seems to be unaware of the impending competition they can expect from Islam.

Replies to this blog/post of the article are Very insightful. Thank God for Thinkers. My fear for America is we won’t Act on that in proportion. Those with the Solutions are busy Thinking, Working, Reading, Praying – and lack the Time to Act, to be Seen and Heard. We may see action as Forcing others to see “our” Reality. There is only One reality – and we Must be Seen and Heard – or risk the more vocal and Ignorant, with an Agenda and control of the MSM, over-running the actual Majority, as they did in Congress. Thinkers and workers, readers and prayers, are Doing Those things – and probably not Vocal or Visible enough.
Those who Work, on average have Far Fewer Children, because We provide for them. Our socio-eonomic differences may account for more than religion, but the view of Left as a religion is valid, in my opin. Those least fit to direct government prevail in numbers.
More Entitled parents have more children, paid for "by the rich".
Actually the Middle class pays most. Takers soon outnumber Payers – The Argentina syndrome. The state being the purveyor of hatred toward those who work/are taxed, it's a self-defeating system.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/DCinFL DCinFL

I believe many who are Clear-thinking and Logical, and also faithful Jews & Christians will think, pray, and take little visible action. It’s polarization – The more extreme one view is, the more the other moves farther out on the ‘see-saw’ to seek Balance. If the Left has the media to sell their redistribution tactics and hate, the other side will Seem more extreme, Despite that we’re a Majority, as we saw with healthtyranny. We then get quiet to Avoid being Labeled “Right-wing Nuts”. Self-fulfilling prophecy b/c the rest must speak Louder. The Left having gained a majority in Congress, we must also fight the trickle-down ignorance that trickle-down poverty engenders, along with the polarization and labels/anger. Don't underestimate Marketing and Branding – Lefties use it very well.

hmmm……left-handedness was considered evil ,in the past .And that's because Righties are more common . However when it comes to baseball pitchers , Lefties are more coveted than righties . Wonder why God invented lefties to begin with ?
So …if most people were predominately Left-handed , and the righties occurring less frequently , then the favored group would be the Lefties ….we could then say that righties are more "hatefull ' and "vicious " ……..sound like B.S. ? LOL…that's because it is B.S. , just like all the bantering and mindless ranting about who "hates more " and whom is godless ..since when does petty partisan views assume a position of loving or hating God ? Since when ? Since it was invented by partisans to beat each other over the head with .
    B.S. detectors – OFF THE SCALE !

  • chuck

You need to narrow your definition of Christian. Those that sent out the Crusaders, that were responsible for the Inquisitions and the left that describe themselves as Christians are not using Christ's standard though they use the same vocabulary and can speak christianese. We will all stand before the Judgement Seat. The fear of the Lord is the beginning wisdom.

  • badaboo

What a Convoluted ,manipulative and absolutely self serving statement . This is why there is seperation of Church and State , written into the Constitution , one of its champions ,being Jefferson . And subsequently Jefferson getting written off in schoolbooks .With Christianity ,there is no right or left , no politics , and certainly NO CONSERVATIVES , as "some " would have us believe . Your political view cannot be likened to a correct or incorrect following of Christianity .. "speak christianese " ? Really !

What is this ? New Christianity based on political view ? Partisan political view no less ! What a PERVERSION of christianity !So we "make God in our own image " instead of the reverse ! What about – "give unto Caesar what is Caesars " ? What about " to follow Me you must give away all that you own " ?
The right and left define themselves by what the other is not , and now redefine christianity itself according to ones politics .
So now you pronounce condemnation on judgement day , based on the same .
    This is truly pathetic .

Good Observation Dutchman , but take a look at the Left , and you'll see about the same , but with a different angle , no less a mirror image . The right claiming "righteousness " and calling the other side "godless communists or marxists "or "defective christians and jews ", whereas the left accusing the right of religious fanatacism and "facism " .
Christianity and Judaism becoming the measuring stick and the hammer .
