Geert Wilders: Freedom on Trial

wilders

It’s the kind of scene one might expect to see in a hard-line Sharia court in Saudi Arabia: a man facing trial for the putative “crime” of insulting Islam. But the defendant in this case is Dutch MP Geert Wilders and the ominous setting for his trial is none other than his native Netherlands. This week, Wilders, the leader of the Dutch Freedom Party (PVV) and an outspoken critic of Islam and Islamic extremism, went on trial on politically loaded charges of inciting hatred and discrimination toward Islam. The outcome of the trial, which could yet result in jail time or a financial penalty for Wilders, will reveal just how far Europe’s multicultural enforcers are willing to go to silence free speech in order to appease the continent’s increasingly restive and radicalized Muslim populations. In his remarks from the trial, reprinted below, Wilders offers a powerful statement about the stakes involved: nothing less than freedom itself. The Editors

Wilders: Mister Speaker, judges of the court,

I would like to make use of my right to speak for a few minutes.

Freedom is the most precious of all our attainments and the most vulnerable. People have devoted their lives to it and given their lives for it. Our freedom in this country is the outcome of centuries. It is the consequence of a history that knows no equal and has brought us to where we are now.

I believe with all my heart and soul that the freedom in the Netherlands is threatened. That what our heritage is, what generations could only dream about, that this freedom is no longer a given, no longer self-evident.

I devote my life to the defence of our freedom. I know what the risks are and I pay a price for it every day. I do not complain about it; it is my own decision. I see that as my duty and it is why I am standing here.

I know that the words I use are sometimes harsh, but they are never rash. It is not my intention to spare the ideology of conquest and destruction, but I am not any more out to offend people. I have nothing against Muslims. I have a problem with Islam and the Islamization of our country because Islam is at odds with freedom.

Future generations will wonder to themselves how we in 2010, in this place, in this room, earned our most precious attainment. Whether there is freedom in this debate for both parties and thus also for the critics of Islam, or that only one side of the discussion may be heard in the Netherlands? Whether freedom of speech in the Netherlands applies to everyone or only to a few? The answer to this is at once the answer to the question whether freedom still has a home in this country.

Freedom was never the property of a small group, but was always the heritage of us all. We are all blessed by it.

Lady Justice wears a blindfold, but she has splendid hearing. I hope that she hears the following sentences, loud and clear:

It is not only a right, but also the duty of free people to speak against every ideology that threatens freedom. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States was right: The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

I hope that the freedom of speech shall triumph in this trial.

In conclusion, Mister Speaker, judges of the court.

This trial is obviously about the freedom of speech. But this trial is also about the process of establishing the truth. Are the statements that I have made and the comparisons that I have taken, as cited in the summons, true? If something is true then can it still be punishable? This is why I urge you to not only submit to my request to hear witnesses and experts on the subject of freedom of speech. But I ask you explicitly to honour my request to hear witnesses and experts on the subject of Islam. I refer not only to Mister Jansen and Mister Admiraal, but also to the witness/experts from Israel, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Without these witnesses, I cannot defend myself properly and, in my opinion, this would not be an fair trial.

"Every good citizen makes his country's honor his own, and cherishes it not only as precious but as sacred. He is willing to risk his life in its defense and is conscious that he gains protection while he gives it. " – Andrew Jackson

I believe that Geert Wilders is standing-up for freedom and his country's honor. What remains to be seen is whether he receives the protection he so rightly deserves!

  • Janez Gorenc

Stand firm, Geert! Europe is watching. Your case is a precedense for all such future cases. And I fear there will be many. I come from Slovenia and we have no mosques here – yet. But freedom of speech has already been stifled. The Muslim community is going to build one in Ljubljana and there was an initiativefor a referendum to ban the mosque and build several prayer rooms instead. However, the referendum itself was banned and the people behind the initiative were called all sorts of names. It is interesting that the speaker of the Islamic community said later: " Things in SLovenia are moving in the right direction. Your lawyers did a great job for us". So, whenever they have problems, they will simply turn to lawyers and politicians to bypass the people! It should have been an eye-opener. Although we by no means achieve standards of freedom that the Dutch have (had?), I was somehow hoping that we would be moving in that direction. But now instead of the infamous 133th article of the Yugoslavian constitution that forbade speech causing unrest in YUgoslavia (which could be anything, really) we now have hate speech regulations (which could be anything as well). And it is not soothing to know that this time the restrictions on freedom are not originating from Moscow.

If he is found guilty I hope protesters respond with a huge roar of outrage that can be heard from Holland to Siberia , and that it doesn't die down until people wake up and realize the meaning of it all !
How can Europe be so dumb ? I say they are suffering from mass-hypnotism ( there is such a thing ) -you have got to admit that the that when those crazed radical Islamics preach out on the streets they give off vibes of passion that is captivating . And people are too scared of Muslim wrath to criticize . Wilders is a hero ; the strongest man ever. Europe should get down on their knees and thank him.

    • Democracy First

If he`s found guilty, the Dutch will rebel against their courts and elite by electing him PM. As they might anyhow. But his victory will be greater.

  • William Smart

Geert Wilders is a footnote in history, he'll be ignored.

It's always the same, Wilders will be no more successful than the Palestinians of 1891 who complained to the Vizier of Constantinople "The Jews are taking all the lands out of the hands of the Muslims, taking all the commerce into their hands and bringing arms into the country,"

    • Stephen D.

Mr. Smart, I take from your comments that he can count on your support or are you merely stating that since (maybe) someone else spoke up for freedom and lost so therefor it is a lost cause? We shouldn’t bother fighting for freedom because others have tried and failed correct? You are something else!
Geert Wilder is a hero for all free peoples – everywhere!!
remember, free speech is the most important right. Your right to disagree. When that’s gone you have nothing else. A dictatorship. Slavery. Subjugation. A bent back may be for you Mr. Smart but not for me.

    • witness

I assume your just another llieing muslim doing your duty to lie to earn reward of what satan tells you is heaven.

    • Jack

Smart by name but it would seem not smart by nature….Tell me please..who were the Palestinians before the founding of Islam? Who lived throughout the land that was once called the Arabian Peninsular? Mmmm..I forgot, Allah is so great and wise that he left it for millenia before deciding to invent Islam through that stalwart of goodness, justice and benevolence….Muhammed….I rest the case for Geert.

  • Ruckweiler

Amazing that Europe, the home of the Western thoughts on Liberty and Freedom, is afraid of the Islamic religion. Are you men or are you mice?

      Neither! They're WIMPS!!

Islamic extremists have hijacked the Koran and other aspects of the faith and now they worship a satanic blood-god. They are cowards and perverts who use children as human shields. These swine will have to answer for their disgusting crimes against humanity. Geert, keep the faith patriot…we stand next to you brother!!!!!

    • New Yorker

Islamic extremists have hijacked nothing. They are merely being faithful to their creed as defined by their prophet and closely follow the directives of the manual called the Koran.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Scarface Scarface

Then their prophet is a perverted FALSE prophet! Satan worshipping swine!

    • witness

      no, mr another lieing muslim.

Terrorists are directly following the teachings of islam and the examples of muhammad.

Many are aware that muslims are required to lie to disguise, deceive and further islam.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/minaka minaka

Instead of hijacking the Koran, it is the jihadis who follow it to the letter and are ironically the most honest about their infernal religion. It's the Koran, the immutable word of Allah that divides the world into Muslims and non-Muslims with the first enjoined to kill, convert, or abase into servitude the latter.

    • Jack

Islamic Extremists haven't hijacked anything regarding the Qu'ran or other aspects of the faith. The dogma that is Islam is clear to all that wish to see with unblinkered eyes. Stating that the Qu'ran has somehow been hijacked or misinterpreted is part of the deception of those that practice this cult ideology….If you or I were to try and publish a book that is so full of hatred and justification of torture and murder, I'm sure we would have great difficulty finding someone (rightly so) who would be willing to put it into print.

  • Abraham Stubenhaus

Of course Geert Wilders is guilty. He is guilty of being white and of being a Christian. Those low IQ animals love to hate and love to kill. Soon, they will realize that they are one billion strong, while we are seven billion who are so far just watching the show. Soon we will be the show.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Trus Trus

Islam is anti-human vile life hating religion based on the stolen history and beliefs of the Jewish people by an insane pedofile women hating sadist Mohammed. It should be cursed daily and the insane pedofile women hating sadist Mohammed rebuked as a bonafide nutcase that he was. I guess that would definitely get me arrested in the Netherlands – but if I were a Muslim I could gang rape the infidel European women and get endless welfare.

lol…what a joke. If people were REALLY behind this poor guy, they'd be booting muslims out of every country in Europe and standing there, ready to die to defend their nations. But they're not. Pity.

  • Pete Case

Free Speech is self-evident. Either it exists or it does not exist…there is no middle ground. If Dutch authorities make him a political prisoner, it is only a matter of time before he becomes the Prime Minister of a free Holland. This showdown had to come sooner or later.
Geert, Please remember what Churchill said about the Americans…They can always be counted on to do the right thing at the last possible moment. It will not be too long before Conservatives across the Atlantic start throwing their political weight behind your cause.

    • Marty

I think a closer paraphrasing of Churchill's words is… Democracies can always be counted upon to do the right thing, but only after exhausting all other possibilities. Unfortunately, there are so many wrong things to do, and we seem so bent on doing them all, that I fear we might not get around to doing it right in time.

  • Greg

GO GEERT !!!!! This is Europe's time to do the right thing, finally.

  • BS1977

Who is responsible for the anarchy and violence in Europe….Euroweenie PC liberal social engineers who never dreamed bringing millions of non assimilating, hostile ingrates into England, France etc etc would have such consequences. They bent over backwards to accomodate medieval dogma, misogyny, burqas, hate filled screaming flag burning demonstrations, then terror bombings and riots, massive car burnings and more riots…..Who is reponsible? Idiot leftist bureaucrats who invited a monster into their tent…..and are now wondering just what the heck to do.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/minaka minaka

If lib social engineers actually recognized the problem they've created and were wondering what to do, they would be showing a drop of (belated) rationality.

Instead, it's still damn the torpedos full speed ahead in most European countries with no let up to Muslim immigration, minimal attention to Muslim terrorism and maximal efforts to shut down any opposition to the Muslim agenda of colonization. European leaders are dhimmi or dim bulbs or both.

  • Alex

The very least all of you can do is to send a strong letter of complaint to your Netherlands Embassy. Inundate them, to let them know just how many of us there are who hold this absurd trial in utter contempt.

  • David, Thailand

Marion: Nobody said or claims that Geert is prefect. However, I have yet to meet a single good Muslim that would publicly claim that Islam is less than perfect. Can you spot the subtle difference?

  • G. de Ridder

Being Dutch and living in Amsterdam I'll try to augment a little on what's going on in the Netherlands right now.

First of all, here's why Geert Wilders is on trial: He made the mistake of proposing harsh measures to counter Islamisation before pointing out the danger of Islam to the Dutch public.

People that cannot understand why the Dutch don't support this man massively have to understand a little more about the Netherlands. It is a mostly non-religious country. Back in the 60's and 70's the majority of the Dutch shed their Christian feathers. This was part of an emancipation that extended beyond religion. As a result of higher education and developing professionalism of the working force people became ever more independent, both financially and mentally. As a result people just didn't accept authority anymore. Not accepting hierarchy has been a Dutch trade for centuries, but it really manifested itself as soon as the middle class gained economic independance. Priests that were still preaching hell and doom that dawned upon the flock if it didn't behave according to God's wishes were cast aside as soon as given the chance. Christianity lost its grip on the Dutch population within no more than 10 or 15 years. Mind you, I'm talking about the Christians institutions, not about Christian virtues. These virtues are internalised deeply.

Churches are still recovering from this revolution. They had to find a new way of reaching the public. They finally seem to understand that scaring the public and dictating what it should and shouldn't do isn't the way to attract a big crowd. We think for ourselves nowadays, thank you. Churches, priests, have slowly come to grips that serving as a safe haven, inspiring people, comforting them, instigating debate over public affairs, organising charity rallies and so forth is the way to go. But the churches have got a long way to go, institutionalised religion is still marginalised.

There seems to be a common understanding that religion is something that takes place behind people's frontdoors, not in public. Live and let live is a motto that fits the Dutch perfectly. You can believe whatever you want, just don't bother me with it. You may call this indifference as well, if you please. Fact is that it worked perfectly for decades.

The result of all this is that the Dutch don't have religious antennas anymore. With the rise of the muslim population, due to immigration in the last decades, hardly anybody felt the urge to investigate what Islam is about.
At this moment, I can assure you, 80% of the Dutch think Islam is some sort of or a variant of Christianity or Judism. Whatever it is people want to believe in, they simply don't care. That's something behind the frontdoor, remember?

As a result of this attitude, the Dutch are fully unaware of the danger that Islam poses on them.
Do they know that Islam defies their first amendment (the principle that everybody is equal under the law)?
    No, they don't.
Would they believe you if you told them Islam defies this principle?
    No.
    Why not?
Because equality is such a basic principle in our society that they simply cannot believe that there are still people to be found that don't subscribe to this basic rule.
If you would show them the soera's that prove that Islam discriminates between muslims and non-muslims, would they believe you then?
    No, they wouldn't.
    Why not?
Well, they'll probably say that the Koran is just a book. You know, the Bible has strange passages as well.
Would they believe you if you would explain to them that whereas Christians more or less think of the Bible as a source of inspiration, not a wordly guide to life, but muslims see the Koran as the unalterated word of God. Would they believe you?
    No.
They'll say, only idiots would take such a thing literally. You know, just a few fundamentalists.
If you would explain to them that those fundamentalists have a big impact on the so called moderate moslims, because being deemed an apostate would put them in clear danger. Would they believe you?
    No, probably not.
    Why not?
Because we're living in the Netherlands, not in some Arab country. Moslims are Dutch too, you know. And we live under Dutch law.
If you would explain to them that Islam isn't just a religion, it's an ideology as well with a full blown law system. A God-given law system. Would they be worried?
    No, probably not?
    Why not?
Because that's probably just the point where interest is raised for the first time. And that's just a starting point.

  • G. de Ridder

Geert Wilders is fully aware of the dangers of Islam, the Dutch population isn't. They're completely ignorant. All they notice is moslims terrorising the streets of all major cities throughout the country. It annoyes the hell out of them, but they just don't understand why these moslims don't want to fit in. Here's their typical reaction: The fact that moslims seem to be so troubled is probably due to the fact that they're being discriminated against. Why else would they attack, assault, rape, and mug non-moslims on a daily basis?

It's a common believe among the left wing parties that we have to make a bigger effort for the moslims to feel at home in our country. That will make their anger go away. So mosques are subsidised, all sorts of activities are organised for moslimwomen only (since they don't want to interact with other men), moslim juvenile delinquents are granted holidaytrips to Marocco, satellite disks are placed on top of buildings with big moslimpopulations so they can watch Arab hate-television, fundamentalists are granted to start moslim schools. Get the picture? Moslims growing up in their cleansed moslim-only neighbourhood, exploiting the social system, learning not to interact with non-believers, looking down on kuffars.

The Dutch don't understand that the misbehaviour of moslims is rooted in their religion. The total disrespect of the indigenous people is baffling, yet hardly anybody recognises the patterns. Geert Wilders does. Unfortunately his message is one people don't want to hear. Because it's unsettling. People rather close their eyes and hope it will go away.

Geert Wilders is up against a natural reflex of the Dutch. Discriminating against people is considered the ultimate crime. That has to do with the Second World War. Many jews were led away in the 1940's from our country by the Nazis to die in the concentration camps. Although it was the Nazi killing machine, we still feel we haven't done enough as a nation to protect the jews. It is a burden that we have to live with. As a result of this politicians are always apprehensive when it comes to matters of minorities. Under no circumstances should the impression arise that minorities are being discriminated against. And it's not just politicians. Throughout society there's a deeply felt conviction that we as wealthy nation should share our wealth and resources with other people on this planet.

It is because of this sentiment that we simply do not want to hear about or believe that there's a group of people in our midst that have a totally different agenda. People who try to point that out are deemed racist. And that's exactly what Geert Wilders is facing now. I think it would have been wiser for him to go more slowly. First explain a dozen or maybe even two dozen times what is going on in our country until it finally sinks in. And only then propose whatever he wants to propose. He is way ahead of the people. He doesn't seem to understand that. Mind you, he's been in hiding for several years now because he receives death threats by moslims on a daily basis. So he may be out of touch with the general public on this issue. Hence his disbelieve: "If what I say is true, why can't I say that?"

Whatever the outcome of this trial will be, one can only hope that at least more Dutch will take an interest in Islam and will become more knowledegeable of this religion. It would certainly clear the sky and we could confront our moslimcommunities with a few urgent questions. It is then up to them to choose a direction.

  • Carl Nash

Freedom of speech forms part of the very foundation of the American republic. The fact that Geert Wilders' faces prison time and/or monetary penalty for merely uttering politically incorrect speech begs an apology from The Netherlands for every American serviceman that died liberating that piss ant country from the Nazis.
