The new NBC hit “V” provides many parallels between its story line and the last twenty-four hours of news coverage concerning the “Flotilla of Peace” that was on its way to assist the residents of Gaza. The parallels are to be found in the manner in which the good guys are portrayed as evil and the villains are portrayed as peace-loving individuals.
In the television show “V,” reptiles masquerading as humans are attempting to conquer the earth and control humanity. Despite their malevolent intent, they manage to portray themselves as peaceful loving aliens. The leader, Anna, closes all her speeches with the line, “We are of peace. Always.” The deceptive nature of the alien PR campaign reaches its peak when Anna learns that the resistance will attempt to shoot down an alien military ship. Instead of avoiding the ambush, Anna fills the military ship with innocent humans, instead of alien commandos. She wanted the ship to be destroyed in order to turn the press against the resistance movement. The press was then completely negligent and complicit in Anna’s PR war.
The last 24 hours of news was like living through a Middle East version of “V.” The press has been reporting for days that the Flotilla was on its way to break through the Israeli blockade. Turkey, a supposed NATO member, was also very well aware of the ship’s cargo, passengers, and mission. As the ships approached Gaza, Israeli soldiers commandeered them. On the final ship, the passengers executed their plot and attacked.
Despite the fact that the Israeli military nearly encountered its own Fallujah, the press has assisted the Islamic ambush. In its article on the Islamic attack, Think Progress went so far as to compare the Islamic attackers to the participants of the American Civil Rights Movement:
Like segregation in the American South, the siege of Gaza (and the entire Israeli occupation, for that matter) is a moral abomination that should be intolerable to anyone claiming progressive values. It’s sad that it should require the deaths of non-Palestinians to finally shake the international community from apathy and inaction, but, as with the tragic murders of Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner, if it contributes to ending the situation then that’s a positive outcome.
This comparison, worthy of Anna and her reptilian comrades, is so distorted that one is obliged to believe the reports are nothing but publicly approved antisemitism. On the one hand, you have a group of unarmed youths being gunned down in the street for wishing to use a “whites only” bathroom. On the other hand, you have a group of terrorists who attacked soldiers engaged in a routine and peaceful search of a vessel. This false comparison is meant to distort reality and lead people to view the attackers as peaceful. It is nothing short of deception and ought to be completely alien to proper journalism.
Think Progress did more than merely come down on the wrong side of an issue. Like the press in “V,” it has distorted the truth in order to make the villains appear peaceful and to have the resistance portrayed as evil. Think Progress has participated in a well orchestrated media campaign designed to paint extremist radicals as peace-loving victims. The writers at Think Progress need to study a little history. Since the year 610 A.D., radical Islamists are of peace. Never!
