John Mearsheimer: Mein Kampf, the Sequel

On April 29, 2010, John J. Mearsheimer, professor at the University of Chicago, delivered a lecture at the Palestine Center entitled, “The Future of Palestine: Righteous Jews vs. the New Afrikaners.” He outlined the four steps by which he believes Israel will morph into a uniquely Palestinian state:

Israel is not going to allow the Palestinians to have a viable state of their own in Gaza and the West Bank. Instead, those territories will be incorporated into a “Greater Israel,” which will be an apartheid state…In the end, it will become a democratic bi-national state, whose politics will be dominated by its Palestinian citizens…it will cease being a Jewish state, which will mean the end of the Zionist dream.

In Mearsheimer’s opinion, an alternative future is impossible for two reasons. The first is:

… most Israelis are opposed to making the sacrifices that would be necessary to create a viable Palestinian state.

The second obstacle to Middle East peace is The Lobby. In 2006, Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, Professor at Harvard University wrote The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy.

We use ‘the Lobby’ as a convenient short‐hand term for the loose coalition of individuals and organizations who actively work to shape U.S. foreign policy in a pro‐Israel direction … no lobby has managed to divert U.S. foreign policy as far from what the American national interest would otherwise suggest, while simultaneously convincing Americans that U.S. and Israeli interests are essentially identical.

Half-way through this paper, the author freely interchanges the expression “The Lobby” with “Jewish Americans.”

First, the villain is The Lobby:

The Lobby strives to ensure that public discourse about Israel portrays it in a positive light.

Then the villain is “American Jewish leaders”:

Not surprisingly, American Jewish leaders often consult with Israeli officials …

Finally:

Jewish‐Americans have formed an impressive array of organizations to influence American foreign policy.

Mearsheimer’s concept of the Jewish People has previously been articulated in history. This image of the Jewish people as “a conspiring self-serving state within the state” is shamelessly borrowed from speeches that once seduced a nation and turned ordinary people into butchers.

Mearsheimer:

The bottom line is that AIPAC, which is a de facto agent for a foreign government, has a stranglehold on the U.S. Congress … Israel is hardly the only country that spies on the United States, but its willingness to spy on its principal patron casts further doubt on its strategic value.

Mein Kampf:

The Jewish state was never limited in itself … this people has always formed a state within states … an incessant struggle is taking place between the advocates of British state interests and the proponents of a Jewish world dictatorship.
