The Lies of Duke

Visit Newsreal

“She was black, they were white, and race and sex were in the air.”  That’s how a Washington Post columnist described the atmosphere that led to the brutal gang rape of Crystal Mangum by a group of Duke University lacrosse players in 2006.  You remember, right? That was the violent, racially motivated hate crime that never happened.

Mangum is in the news again, but this time she won’t find an army of race-obsessed charlatans, Marxist demagogues, and pandering politicians speeding to her defense.  The Left only rolls out that treatment for struggling black single mothers when their harrowing tales bolster an ideological agenda.  Pulling off the “virtuous victim of white privilege” shtick won’t be easy when Mangum faces charges of child abuse, arson, and attempted murder.

Guilty or innocent, the stripper who cried wolf is on her own this time.  She was only worthy of the support of Jesse Jackson, NOW, the New Black Panther Party, and the Duke University “gang of 88” as long as she was able to help weave a compelling narrative of misogyny, class warfare, racial inequity, and systemic injustice.

Two weeks after Crystal Mangum falsely accused the Duke athletes of rape, English Professor Houston Baker publicly condemned the University’s “moral response to abhorrent sexual assault, verbal racial violence, and drunken white male privilege loosed amongst us.”  In a letter to University Provost Peter Lange, he wrote:

The lacrosse team – 15 of whom have faced misdemeanor charges for drunken misbehavior in the past three years – may well feel they can claim innocence and sport their disgraced jerseys on campus, safe under the cover of silent whiteness. But where is the black woman who their violence and raucous witness injured for life? Will she ever sleep well again?

If Professor Baker and his Duke colleagues cared so much about Crystal Mangum getting a good night’s sleep, what did they do to prevent her from landing in prison on attempted murder and child abuse charges?  If her race and socioeconomic status were enough to merit destroying the lives of a “scummy bunch of white males,” why did they abandon this underprivileged black woman without getting her the help she so obviously needed?

Mangum was a deeply troubled woman long before she falsely accused the Duke University athletes of rape. Her history of mental illness and unsubstantiated rape and violence claims began in her teenage years, and alcohol abuse has been part of the picture as well.

But that didn’t matter to the Duke faculty members who seized upon her false rape account to stir up racial animosity and resentment of “white, male, athletic privilege.”  She made a convenient weapon in the race, class, and gender warfare waged by academics and abetted by the media and the reprehensible former district attorney, Mike Nifong.

Malik Zulu Shabazz, national chairman of the New Black Panther Party proclaimed, “to us she is a righteous and divine woman by nature.” 88 Duke faculty members jumped to her defense (and all but convicted the athletes) in a full-page ad that described a poisonous environment of racial hatred.  And of course, the Rev. Jesse Jackson showed up to highlight the plight of a black single mother terrorized by a culture of rampant racism and sexism.

Mangum’s affirmative action qualifications became less valuable when evidence clearing the lacrosse players forced her to turn in her righteous victimhood card.  To the Left, she was a cause, not a human being. When she couldn’t maintain the hoax, she wasn’t any less black or any less female. But she was no longer a politically useful black single mother, and thus, no longer of value to the race hustlers and class warmongers who rushed to her aid.

Once Crystal Mangum outlived her usefulness as the personification of social injustice in their heavy handed race baiting immorality play, the Left moved on without apology.  And Mangum returned to her troubled life as just another ex-poster child for the leftist agenda, a mentally unstable, alcohol soaked liar who was chewed up and spit out by people in a position to help stop her from ruining more lives, including those of her three young children.

Good article. To this day, have we had ANY apologies from the race and class hustlers tht jumped on this " cause "? What about the professors at Duke? Was anybody held accountable for their behavior/actions in rushing to judgement?

Can we get any help directed to the three children at least. If so, how can we help the mother?

  • eyes wide open .

my , oh , my oh , my … there nothing that some folks wont drag in out of the garbage , and insert into the lefty vs righty , partisan smack dowm ???

Were the cops who arrested the lads "lefties ", hows about the hospitol were the rape examination took place ? What were all the nurses and doctors ? " lefties " , the prosecutor?
What about that gal in N.C. who drowned her two sons in the car she rolled into a lake , then claimed it was "two blackmen " …..was she a "righty " ? And I can recall several others that made the news with similar claims ,later to be proven totally false
These are the acts of common opportunist arse-holes and felons , used to cover their crimes , and have no place on a blog like this ….it's childish and it diminishes credibility .
Me thinks , if there wasn't a " Kenyan " in the White House , this would ,maybe be a bloggers post rather than a topic starter . tsk ,tsk ,tsk …..

    • cjk

And exactly what were the names of the innocent black men who were arrested in those other false cases and then publically dragged through the wringer by the right-wing media?
Me thinks that you're a moron tsk, tsk, tsk….LOL

      • eyes wide open

I dont think you can read , nor are you probably old enough to remember the several cases that madse the news where the standard suspects were " some black men ' , obviously in those case , no blackmen were arrested becvause they hadn't e xisted to begin with .
But you missed my point to begin with . Try somew lessons in reading comprehension genius , you may actually pick up the particular vain of a statement .
One thing I know is for sure , if you think that this is a valid topic , rather than something a blogger LIKE YOU would post , then YOU are the MORON .
And if your not the illiterate that you present yourself as , you can go back in history and find that 'innocent blackmen "have bbeen HUNG , on nothing more than a word . And that was the point genius , Law enforcement did what it was required to do . As for anyone who pre-judged those kids , well they were idiots , just as the proposition that this incident can be extrapolated into a Left vs.Right issue is idiotic , and the words used and how they were used were in my opinion race-baiting .

        • cjk

LOL like I said you're a race obsessed chump.

  • renton

That the Duke players were innocent was obvious to a lot of us, including Rush Limbaugh, before it every became obvious to the Professors, media, etc. The article points out the strange mentality of people who care about this woman when her false statements fit their ideology, and then don't care what happens to her miserable life afterwards.

  • cjk

She should be in jail doing the three rape sentences that she so wickedly desired to impose on the three innocent students.

  • cjk

She should already be doing the three rape sentences which she so wickedly wished to impose upon the innocent.

Eyes wide open: first of all, you refer to Susan Smith who drowned her two children. Ms Smith was almost immediately considered a suspect because her story didn't hold water. Also, there was no condemnation by 88 professors or a willing cover-up by a District Attorney running for office either. And I don't recall anyone hiding exculpatory evidence in the Susan Smith case. As soon as her story fell apart they jumped on her and she was finished.

In Mangum's case she walked away free even though there was ample evidence to prosicute her for at least perjuring herself, not to mention the other crimes such as false accusations. Considering she had done this before (unsubstantiated rape charges)
it should have raised a few red flags. The fact that this case and the false charges dragged on for as long as it did is inexcusable. Mike Nifong knew these men were innocent. This was a (phony) case of White on Black crime stirred up by a media that is in the business of selling news. It may as well have been covered by William Randolph Hurst and his Yellow Journalists. It had nothing to do with left vs right or vice versa. Your analogy sucks!

    • eyes wide open

Sorry rich b , but she was indeed suspect , even before the boys were formally arrestyed . As for Nifong , what do you expect from a penny ante DA looking to keep his job .? Afterall, the ball was in his court from the getgo .
And no there was no one sided frenzy of Lefty Yellow Journalism , for if I remember correctly many were doubting the veracity of her accusation . There were statements she made that simply did not pan out right from the start .[selective memory again ?]
Nifong held on nonetheless to the point of making an obvious fool of himself and in effect eventually breaking the law .

Thanks rich for making the comments that I was going to make. Besides, for such a "literate" person, eyes wide shut doesn't seem to know the difference between vain and vein or your and you're. LOL

  • Goetz

It's hard to imagine this young woman orchestrating such an elaborate scheme as the fleecing of Duke. She probably had leadership from older, more experienced race-hustlers.

    • rich b

Goetz said "It's hard to imagine this young woman orchestrating such an elaborate scheme as the fleecing of Duke. She probably had leadership from older, more experienced race-hustlers."

Jesse Jackson, Charles Barron, The RevRearend Al Sharpton, Cornell West and a couple hundred others I can't quite remember right now come to mind. The list is long and fraudulent.

These race-baiters are the salt and America is the open wound they'll never allow to heal. After all, they make a wonderful living keeping racism alive.

  • Larry D. Crumbley

Where oh where is Mr. Sharpton. Notice I did not say REV. He was so out there in the public when all of this was going down. I mean the story of her supposedly being raped by these young men, and now this. WHERE is he at? Why has HE not apologized to these YOUNG-MEN? I already know the answer to that. He is a coward that is why. He saw the writing on the wall, and it was bad news for him so he left in a hurry, and di not want to deal with the real truth. The GOD that he says that he serves says the TRUTH will set you FREE. I wonder if Mr. Sharpton understands that or not.?

    Larry C.

    • rich b

I think everyone here with a brain knows what RevRearend Sharpton is all about. Now that he can't get anymore mileage out of Ms Mangum he's moved on. He's like a locust. He moves from field to field exausting all resources and once they're gone he moves on. He's trash!

  • MDCr

Wait, I'm confused. According to the link about this incident, she has published her memior. Other than false accusations, alcoholism, stripping, and being menatlly unstable, what did she have to write about. Gosh, can I get a book deal?

  • Tony Bonagura

How about the story where 5 BLACKS took a WHITE couple in Tennessee and tortured and committed BRUTAL SEXUAL acts with them and then FINALLY MURDERED them. Where was that story published and where was the LIBERAL BIAS PRESS on that story? Was this a HATE CRIME? The bias in reporting makes me VERY SICK to my stomach. I have no respect for the LEFTIST MEDIA outlets. They are more EVIL than those who committ the crimes. You say what story, google the story for a description of the most brutal crime of all time and no one covers it. SHAME ON THEM.

    • rich b

Tony, you're talking about the Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom slaughter. Michelle Malkin has blogged extensively about it. There have been some convictions with more to come. Or maybe they're all convicted. Either way you're right. There was very little coverage outside of the local media. The whole thing was sickening. I do not believe the murderers were even charged with a hate crime. The press pretty much ignored the case since it was a black on white crime. And the Lame Stream Media/Traditional Press still doesn't understand why they're fast becoming irrelivant. Well this case is an outstanding example of why.
