Humanity has become a threat to the earth, according to CNN founder and environmentalist Ted Turner. A billionaire and father of five who has publicly lamented having so many children, Turner is calling for a global one-child policy. At least one report indicates that the primary opposition to such a policy is the Roman Catholic Church and “developing countries.”
How about you, though? Are you prepared to sacrifice your fertility rights to “save” Mother Earth and deprive your child of siblings?
More often than not, arguments for decreasing the population are based on the idea that we can cure poverty by literally getting rid of the poor. Rather than uplifting the poor, the goal of many is to abolish the poor…literally…through suppressing their fertility. Ted Turner‘s call for a global one-child policy is a new twist on a very old agenda. He calls for the suppression of the fertility of all people worldwide in order to “save the earth.” According to a report in the Globe and Mail, however, Turner has framed his selling argument as a goal to save humanity from…humanity.
If we’re going to be here [as a species] 5,000 years from now, we’re not going to do it with seven billion people, Mr. Turner said.
Actually, we are pretty close to seven billion already and, though population is rising, there is a rapid decline in the global fertility rate. As a result of this decline, world population is set to peak in thirty years and then start falling off. Some experts predict that we will be seeing “catastrophically falling birth rates, well below the replacement level” and will experience what is being called a “demographic winter.” If anything, we should be having more children, not fewer. Westerners might be interested to know that higher fertility rates among Muslims, coupled with immigration to Europe, could make Europe a Muslim continent in the near future.
The world is indeed changing.
