Newsweek Declares the End of War on Terror

Is the War on Terror over? According to “post-American” progressive, Newsweek editor and CNN commentator Fareed Zakaria, it is. After telling Americans last year to “learn to live with radical Islam,”he now declares Islamist extremism to be defeated, proclaiming:

“The enemy is not vast; the swamp is being drained. Al Qaeda has already lost in the realm of ideology. What remains is the battle to defeat it in the nooks, crannies, and crevices of the real world.”

“The focus of our concern now is not a broad political movement but a handful of fanatics scattered across the globe.”

Indeed the changing composition of Islamic extremism does present  individuals not clearly affiliated with any established group, most notably Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Christmas day bomber. But despite the existence of independent radicals, Zakaria’s feint of immateriality belies the inherent risks of the continued existence of groups with extreme and violent ideology.

In his article, subtitled, “How moderate Muslim leaders waged war on extremists – and won,” Zakaria reduces the War on Terror to “good foreign policy” in need of “politics, diplomacy, and development” exemplifying the September 10th mentality that  viewed terrorism strictly as an international and foreign policy issue.

Post 9/11, we recognize that terrorism is more than a foreign policy issue, it’s a foreign and domestic security threat. Since 9/11, there have been 14,942 deadly Islamist attacks worldwide (2001-2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.) Zakaria’s suggestion that a change in tone, attitude, and openness will eliminate any remaining Islamist terrorists ignores the reality that if they are willing to kill their own children by letting them detonate suicide bombs, then they will also be willing to kill our children for their misguided cause. In the words of IPT News,

“For such a highly influential commentator to foster this sense of complacency is irresponsible and negligent.”

The fact that radical Islamists do send their children to blow themselves up in the name of Islam is so at odds with the following statement Zakaria makes that one has to wonder why he would assert,

“The most important moderates to denounce militants have been the families of radicals. In the case of both the five young American Muslims from Virginia arrested in Pakistan last year and Christmas bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, parents were the ones to report their worries about their own children to the U.S. government.”

Unless it’s part of a calculated distraction, someone of Fareed Zakaria’s  intelligence should be loath to cite two examples of parents turning in their children to authorities as proof of moderate Muslims defeating Islamist extremists. The only Islamic states he cites proving his thesis are Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Iraq, all hotbeds of radical extremists who despite overt declarations of opposition to extremism may very well be covertly  provisioning weapons, financing, or logistical support to them. But Zakaria’s article is not written to support his thesis, but rather his political ideology. And here’s where we find the money quote. Zakaria stealthily injects the true reason we believe Islamist jihadism is widespread,

“Republicans have clearly decided that fanning the public’s fears of rampant jihadism continues to be a winning strategy.”

How Republicans manage to be introduced into an article focused on the defeat of radical Islamists by moderate Muslims is almost inconceivable. But Zakaria’s point was never to support his thesis, but to insinuate that radical jihadism only exists out of fear and that fear is spread by Republicans. In Zakaria’s ideology, 19 terrorists crashing airplanes into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and Shanksville, PA in no way demonstrates radical Islamist extremism. But his obtuse logic is defied by the facts, and the War on Terror goes on.

Fareed is a delusional typical dhimmi. The Iranian nightware is coalasing nto a nuclear armageddon as Hesbollah fields a missle force as deadly as anything Russia or France have.

"the Messenger of Allah . . . would say: 'Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war. . . . When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. . . . Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them. . . . If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them . . .'" (Muslim Book 19, Number 4294).
"fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war) . . . " (Qur’an 9:5).

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued" (Qur'an 9:29).

"The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter . . . " (Qur'an 5:33).
[Ibn Kathir says of this verse: "'Wage war' mentioned here means, oppose and contradict, and it includes disbelief, blocking roads and spreading fear in the fairways. Mischief in the land refers to various types of evil." So, Muhammad requires execution, crucifixion, or cutting off hands and feet from opposite sides for "disbelief."]
"Allah's Apostle said: 'I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle . . . '" (Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 24).

"It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise" (Qur'an 8:67).

"Allah’s Apostle said, 'I have been made victorious with terror'" (Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220).

If Allah commands, "kill the pagans wherever you find them" (Qur'an 9:5), then what, exactly, is the difference between a "moderate" and an "extremist"?

Fareed and his liberal cohort will go to any length to honor President Obama and his administration. This is a purely Clintonian way to play politics with national defense, and a dangerous one.

Notice he did not give any props to W., which is a major clue that this is a partisan hack job.

I say conservatives should run with it. Liberals today are going to try to bring up WMD, which Saddam really had. Our goal should be the assimilation of Obama from purple to red, the Presidential Medal of Freedom for W., the appointment of David Petraeus as Joint Chief of Staff, and the appointment of Dick Marcinko as Secretary of Defense.

What beats one monster army? Well a bigger monster army always works.

Does anyone read Newsweek? I think about 26 people still subscribe to this rag.

  • andres de alamaya

It is comforting to read the proper reactions to this Newsweek nonsense. It would have been equally comfortable to have read my own comments of two hours ago but that may be too much to ask.

Fareed Zakarias is a muslim , that is not a hindu name!

Another Muslim apologist explaining away the violence and demonic of Islam. Again another Muslim attempting to put a happy and benevolent face on the illusive "moderate" Muslim that is absolutely no where to be found within the content of the koran. What exactly are these moderate Muslims and where are they found in the koran? I for one am tired of the lies and misrepresentations presented by those that seek to confuse and convince us of the benevolence of Islam that apparently "moderate" Muslims embrace. Where EXACTLY within the koran is this loving, benevolent, giving, tolerant, non-violent,non-war mongering, peaceful,non-pedophilic,non-misogynist, democratic, and kind to the whole world philosophy???
Please show us Mr. Zakarias. And a couple hundred million muslims that espouse violence and sharia by force is not a small population.

I am very glad to hear that the war on terror is over. The question remains if the terrorists know it.

    • coyote3

Well, let's say everything is just as idyllic has he says. There was no threat in the first place, but even if there was a threat, there is no threat now. What is the problem, let's just bring all, and I do mean "all" the troops home, and discharge all but a token number. After all, everything is okay, what do we need them for?

  • USMCSniper

This war on terror is just getting started. Cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war. Muslims are vermin like the Orcs of Middle Earth. Kill 'em all, wrap them in their prayer rugs, put 'em all in piles and burn 'em and let Allah sort 'em out. Allah will love us for this because we will keep heaven supplied with lots and lots of fresh raghead souls. And,…. there is nothing like smell of a pile of burning ragheads in the early morning – that is the smell of victory in the air! OOoooooorahhhh!!!

Moderate Islam is as credible a notion as "moderate" rabies. As any mad dog or Mullah can tell you, moderation is one thing, quiescence quite another. And the media is lending a whole new meaning to their function of "carriers."
