Are Women Human? The Left Isn’t Sure

In today’s Jerusalem Post, writer Caroline B. Glick surveys the feminist Left’s current attitudes toward Israel with amazement.  She notes that “if being a human rights activist means attacking the only country in the Middle East that defends human rights, then that means that at the very basic level, the term ‘human rights activist’ is at best an empty term.”  Indeed, Glick cites then first lady Hillary Clinton’s wise words at the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women:  “It is no longer acceptable to discuss women’s rights as separate from human rights … If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights, once and for all.”

Since having become secretary of state, however, Mrs. Clinton seems to have moved on.  Like many other self-proclaimed feminists on the Left, she blasts Israel for its supposed human-rights violations against the Palestinians, while ignoring the apparent war on women and girls throughout much of the rest of the Middle East.  Even when they migrate into western nations, people from these lands sometimes bring their anti-female practices with them.  These include honor killings, forced marriage, denial of educational and career opportunities and even the genital mutilation euphemized as “female circumcision.”

Instead of expressing much concern about these encroaching menaces, President Obama assails Israel for permitting Jews to build homes in Jerusalem.  Such is the real focus of the Left in America today.

I must confess I’m confused.  Why is it that women are shunted to the back of the line – behind not only human beings, but even animals – when it comes to addressing violations against their rights? Though they’ve long claimed the mantle of standard-bearer for feminism, leftists today seem more worried about the fate of the yellow-bellied sapsucker than they are about what is happening to women and girls in much of the world.  And as to the fact that blatant violations of their rights are beginning to appear increasingly often even under their own noses, in the United States itself, those who jealously guard the copyright on the name of  “feminist” seem completely oblivious.

Now even non-living beings rank higher, evidently, on the leftist totem pole than women.  Outside the court proceedings for WikiLeaks whistle-blower Julian Assange in London, protesters swarmed. Lest it be imagined that they care more about defending the rights of an accused rapist over that of his victims, these dutiful little leftist droids were quick to declare they are there in support of “freedom of information.”
