When President Obama gave Queen Elizabeth an iPod containing his own speeches, and then followed with a box set of American Classic movies to Gordon Brown in April, 2009, we sincerely thought that the egotistical Obamas’ penchant for giving tasteless tokens couldn’t get much worse.
Well, at least Brown and the Queen had no trouble going through customs with their treasures. Michelle Obama offered pickled vegetables to United Nations reps. Ever tried to transport fresh farm products into another country?
From USA Today:
Chicks and ducks and geese had to scurry today as Michelle Obama led U.N. spouses for a walk on a country farm in Connecticut.
From the Seattle Times:
Mrs. Obama presented each one with a maplewood basket containing pickled, hand-picked goods from her Kitchen Garden; chamomile seeds, also from the garden; a clay tea canister; and a soy candle with a silver imprint of the White House on both sides.
Cheap, tacky and unbelievably mindless. The handmade baskets do not contain the dignitary’s name and there is no reference to the United States of America. Rather, the engraving reads “Made Exclusively for Michelle Obama.”
Are all radical collectivists narcissistic?
Mr. and Mrs. Obama’s advisers on such matters must be hopelessly clueless or the wonder couple feels no need for outside suggestions. It’s bad enough the president bows and apologizes all over the world. But the embarrassing gifts will probably end up at a yard sale in London or purposely left in a hotel room; the chamomile seeds and soy candle next to the toiletries.
During the farm tour the Princeton grad enlightened her guests from countries like Bangladesh, Cameroon, Albania, Nigeria and Sri Lanka:
Many kids may never learn that ketchup comes from a tomato and french fries from a potato because they’re disconnected from the food they eat.
And then Mrs. O related a story about how daughter Sasha had been a tomato-phobe — until she made her own tomato, mozzarella and pesto sandwich in a cooking class at school.
In jabbering on about Sasha, the first lady, so invested in her own personal fiction, forgets the level of poverty in the third world countries represented by the dignitaries’ wives. The persistently oblivious Michelle Obama seems as disconnected from those around her as American children are from the food they eat.
Mama Obama’s self-absorbed giveaway basket and her comments to the U.N. spouses are more reminders of the first lady’s apathy towards anyone outside of her circle; not very leftist of her, is it?
