Why I’ll Be at Glenn Beck’s 8/28 Restoring Honor Rally

A recent rant by a New Black Panthers minion , and the not-so-subtle threats embedded in a follow up interview by its chairman (extensively covered by Glenn Beck and ably put into historical context by NRB’s David Swindle) should forever settle the question as to whether African-Americans enjoy equal opportunity to engage in the same stupidity and malice as their white counterparts. Inasmuch as those counterparts tend to be sullen skin-head types living in some UV-bathed corner of their parents’ home, waiting patiently for Caucasian re-ascendancy, or at least a call-back from Safeway, it’s probably worth asking if this is really the standard the assorted Shabazzes want to hold themselves to … but I digress.
As part of a larger “oil-on-troubled-waters” interview, one such Shabazz–a chairman no less–weighed in on Glenn Beck, and the Panthers intentions to crash the 8/28 rally.
For [Glenn Beck] to go and secure the Lincoln Memorial on Dr. King’s birthday will meet not only opposition from civil rights leaders but it’s going to meet direct opposition from the New Black Panther Party. Since the Tea Party loves Glenn Beck and will be there, the New Black Panther Party can easily find the Tea Party, right with Glenn Beck. And so, he can bring his Tea Party and we’ll bring our party, and we’ll see Glenn Beck …
It would be tempting to suggest we just put members of the New Black Panthers and the Aryan Nation together in a sealed room and let them work this out among themselves, but if videos such as the one above demonstrate anything it’s the general disdain of such organizations for anything resembling a fair fight—“fair fight” in this context operationally defined as “absence of cowering from the opponent.”
Which brings me to why I will be at the 8/28 rally dressed in loud colors and as many noise-makers as my dumpy cracker frame will accommodate. As it happens I had already long since bought the train ticket and the T-shirt (Philly to DC is hardly The Long March and yours truly is always up for a road trip), but now that the Panthers have upped the ante by promising to attend I will be there if I have to go on two broken legs.
Because, like most people there are things I don’t fully understand, but I know when someone’s hand is on my chest, and the owner needs to know that doesn’t typically work out well. Please don’t mistake this for tough talk (the “dumpy” reference above was something more than metaphorical). Like the multitudes that will be surrounding me, about the last thing I will be looking for is a dust-up involving little men with big titles. I’m more interested in honoring big men with small titles, like “Sergeant.”
