The George Soros founded website the Washington Independent will cease to exist, come December 1. The reason is, according to the obscure website’s admirers at the Huffington Post, the worldwide economic crisis.
Pajamas Media‘s Bryan Preston knows better, however. The Indy isn’t going down because the American economy is still sagging – despite all the fantastic and expensive ‘stimulus’ bills passed by Nancy Pelosi’s Congress and Barack Obama’s White House – but because nobody’s reading it.
The Washington Independent pretended to be all about high quality journalism, while it was, in fact, nothing more than a home on the Internet for radical leftists. Its sole purpose was to smear conservatives and to support Democrats’ collectivist agenda. The problem, its founders soon found out? Such drivel simply isn’t very popular.
What may also have hurt Indy‘s chances of success was (or still is, actually) its staff: two of its foremost writers are the thoroughly discredited Dave Weigel and Spencer Ackerman. The former became a household name in the blogosphere after he was fired by the Washington Post for pretending to be something he wasn’t: a friend of the Right. It was Weigel’s job to keep an eye on the conservative movement, as somewhat of an insider, and report about it for the Post. When the so-called JournoList scandal broke, however, it quickly became clear that Weigel could muster no respect or appreciation for his subject matter whatsoever. He reviled the Right. In one email he even went so far as to say that Matt Drudge – owner of The Drudge Report – should “set himself on fire.”
JournoListGate also exposed Ackerman: he had sent the group emails in which he laid out strategies to be used against conservatives. An example: “In other words, find a right winger’s [sic] and smash it through a plate-glass window. Take a snapshot of the bleeding mess and send it out in a Christmas card to let the right know that it needs to live in a state of constant fear.” That’s ‘progressive’ journalism in action: instead of reporting the news, just smear conservatives and make them too afraid to speak out against leftist policies and politicians.
With such a staff and such an approach to journalism, it can be little surprise that the Washington Independent was ignored by, well, virtually everybody. Even the blind idiots at the Huffington Post should be able to understand that, you’d think. Then again, never underestimate the stupidity of idiots – especially not of radical idiots.
