The Real Glenn Beck

Forbes magazine just published a profile of our favorite talk show host, Glenn Beck. I advise all those who wonder about who the man behind the public mask – the one he wears on radio and on television – is to read it in its entirety. It’s three pages long, but it’s well worth your time.
One of the most fascinating statements Beck made is the following:
With a deadpan, Beck insists that he is not political: “I could give a flying crap about the political process.” Making money, on the other hand, is to be taken very seriously, and controversy is its own coinage. “We’re an entertainment company,” Beck says.
Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers, a trade magazine devoted to talk radio, adds: “I don’t necessarily believe that [what Beck says] is reflective of his own personal politics–I don’t even know if he has personal politics. I see him as a performer.”
Although Beck certainly is putting up an act, and often does exaggerate in an attempt to “entertain” his audience, it does not automatically mean that he’s lying about his political views on his shows and in his books. The one does not rule out the other. Note also that Beck didn’t tell Forbes that he doesn’t care about politics, but about the political process. The two aren’t the same.
As could be expected, leftist websites such as Talking Points Memo use the above to dismiss Beck as a fake. Don’t be fooled by their attacks, though; it’s just the latest strategy they use in their year-old war on the Fox News host.
Meanwhile, if Beck gave Forbes this sound bite so he could be at the center of attention once again, he has succeeded.
