After what may have been the most frustrating two years in political history for many people, tomorrow’s Election Day looks to finally allow us to derail the express train of destruction, or at least put it on a different track. Exhausting as it has been, it is just the beginning. Come Wednesday morning, it will be time to hold our newly elected representative’s feet to the fire.
Back in April, Tea Party activists revealed their “Contract From America”, a common sense contract that asks very little of our representatives that they shouldn’t have been doing in the first place.
- Protect the Constitution
- Reject Cap & Trade
- Demand a Balanced Budget
- Enact Fundamental Tax Reform
- Restore Fiscal Responsibility & Constitutionally Limited Government
- End Runaway Government Spending
- Defund, Repeal, & Replace Government-run Health Care
- Pass an ‘All-of-the-Above” Energy Policy
- Stop the Pork
- Stop the Tax Hikes
Whether or not you agree 100% with all of these points, many points are basics that should be expected from every representative, in good times and bad. Is it really asking too much for our representative to uphold the Constitution? To keep a budget, just as millions of Americans have to do on a daily basis? To stop filling our bills with pet projects irrelevant to the bills themselves?
It is easy to agree to these points until they get to Washington. Frustration, lobbyists, deal making, power struggles and more will be heaped upon them and good intentions can quickly go by the wayside. That’s why our real job begins Wednesday morning. Our representatives will need our encouragement and support to stick to their convictions. They will also need our constant prodding and stern warnings should we see them waver.
By receiving our votes tomorrow, we are telling our representatives that we believe in them. On Wednesday morning, it will be time for us to ask, “Do you believe in us?”
