It must be tough to be a Jewish student in the University of California system these days — what with even the mainstream leftist student organizations aligning to blame Israel for Middle Eastern troubles.
This week, student organizations at two universities — UC San Diego and UC Berkeley — have exhibited great hostility toward the Jewish State by participating, enthusiastically, in anti-Israel campaigns. Members of the UC San Diego community have devised a “UCSD Divest for Peace” resolution which seeks to divest student association and university funds from US companies, such as General Electric, which take a “non-neutral financial stance in the occupation of Palestinian territories.”
On May 5th, the UCSD Associated Student Campus Affairs Committee brought up, for a second time, the resolution in question. Just for a little perspective, here is a portion of the resolution’s completely one-sided assessment of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in which Israel is, of course, a brutal, indiscriminate occupying regime:
WHEREAS, prior and subsequent to the 2008-2009 Gaza bombing, the occupying force has engaged in collective punishment of the Palestinian population, in the view of the human rights community, 1 exemplified by the ongoing 32 month blockade on Gaza, of which the regional branch of Physicians for Human Rights has written, “the prolonged siege imposed… on Gaza…”
WHEREAS, within the occupied West Bank (including East Jerusalem), the occupying force continues a policy of settlement expansion that, according to the United Nations Security Council, Human Rights Watch, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, constitutes a direct violation of Article 49, paragraph six of the Fourth Geneva Convention which declares that “an occupying power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into territories it occupies.” 4 and according to United Nations Security Council Resolution 446 “determines that the policy and practices of [the occupying power] in establishing settlements in the Palestinian and other Arab territories occupied since 1967 have no legal validity and constitute a serious obstruction to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East” 5; and
The ASCAC voted to indefinitely table the resolution, but not without the endorsement of many of UCSD’s mainstream left-wing organizations including the Black Student Union, the College Democrats, Students for Barack Obama and the Haiti Emergence Action Team (see full list here.)
At UC Berkeley, an astounding 41 student groups signed an endorsement letter for Associated Students of UC Berkeley Senate Bill 118A, “A Bill In Support of UC Divestment From [Israeli] War Crimes.” The bill, and its lengthy list of supporters, has been promoted by an expressly anti-Israel group which calls itself, the “U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.” Their objective is to starve Israel of defense funds derived from academic and cultural institutions (or, as they describe, funds that are used to persecute innocent Palestinians.)
