Florida State Senator Views Porn During Abortion Debate

Is this how our leaders get educated on how to vote?

Within a week after it was revealed the SEC was viewing porn instead of watching Wall Street, Florida state Senator Mike Bennett was too busy looking at adult material to listen to debate on an abortion bill.  Bennett says opening the image was an accident but does not apologize nor offer proof of his claims.  Voters get yet another example of a politician who cares more about personal pleasure than the people’s business.

Sunshine State News filmed Bennett sitting in on debate on the floor of the Senate and caught him first viewing an image of young women partially nude in bikinis. The video shows after looking at it for a couple of moments he goes on to open a video of a dog running on the beach. The video and original news report can be seen here.

Ironically right when Bennett views the pornographic image, you can hear a Senator Dan Gelber’s voice saying, ”I’m against this bill, because it disrespects too many women in the state of Florida.”  Bennett was also against the pro-life bill that would require women to view ultrasounds before making a decision on abortion.  He spoke out against it during debate and voted against it (though it passed the Senate anyway).

Bennett has offered multiple excuses for his viewing the image that was an attachment from an email he received.  He has said it was a personal email from a trusted source, it was an email that pertained to the abortion legislation, and that he was just really bored.  First he told the Sunshine State news:

“I was just sitting there, bored as they were debating the abortion bill.  I opened it up and said holy [expletive]! What’s on my screen? and clicked away from it right away.” – Bennett

However, after the negative press he adjusted his story a bit in a press release:

“Last week, during final deliberations on the Senate floor to fulfill my sworn duty to do the people’s business, I opened e-mails sent to me and discovered one disturbing and offensive transmission that I immediately moved to the trash.” – Bennett

Bennett does not apologize for the mistake, and he refuses to offer up his email to prove it had an innocent appearance to it.  Even worse, Bennett ignores the fact that he obviously wasn’t doing the people’s business.Whether he meant to look at the porn or not does, not take away from the fact that the man wasn’t doing his job.  While people were debating an issue as serious as abortion, he was watching videos and looking at questionable email attachments.

While some on the Left attack the topic as just another Republican gone bad, anyone who looks at Bennett’s voting record knows he is no conservative.  And it is especially sad that Bennett was ignoring a serious abortion debate when in the past couple of years he shifted from a pro-life voter to a staunch pro-choice voter.  Planned Parenthood shows a partial list of his voting history that reveals the change.  In 2008 he began voting pro-choice and even co-introduced a pro-choice bill recently in the Florida Senate.

It is time for representatives to take seriously representing the people.  We need people at every level of government focused on the task at hand.  More and more I’m convinced by the statement: Throw the bums out!
