HuffPo Column: Obama Holds a “Biblical Vision” of Governance?

While extolling the “virtues” of the president, and the goals of his administration, Obery M. Hendricks Jr., PhD, convolutes Christianity in his Huffington Post column.
“I noted the progressive political positions he had taken, the compassionate policies he proposed and supported as a state and national lawmaker. I listened to the content of his pronouncements and read the ethical vision underlying his words.”
“Barack Obama is a man of deep faith who is fundamentally committed to building a more just, more equitable, more abundant and more morally healthy nation for all Americans.”
Hendricks goes on to quote Luke 4:18-19
“What the Gospel of Luke portrays as the initial – and the definitive – sermon of Jesus’ ministry, with its clear and unerring political implications, not only defines the social responsibility of all who claim to be persons of faith and good will, but also sharpens the broad strokes articulated in Psalm 72 of the behaviors that should be expected of those in positions of power and authority:
‘The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free… (Luke 4:18-19)’
As one who takes the moral and ethical witness of the Bible seriously, I support Barack Obama’s presidency because I am convinced that he is seized by this biblical vision of just and fair and compassionate governance.”
The good news of the gospel is not that the poor will now have free health care coverage. Nor was the oppressed he was referring to terrorists held in Guantanamo Bay.
Christ did not come to preach to the rulers, or to create more just governance. He taught, lived and died for the individual. He taught self-governance. He taught us to examine our hearts beyond our actions. He preached against those who lived externally by the law, and though their hearts were evil, proclaimed their goodness.
Hendricks is convinced that Obama is “seized by this biblical vision of just and fair and compassionate governance.” Herein liess the fundamental difference between not only Left and Right, but the Christian and “progressive” view of world redemption.
Leftists see evil in the institutions of man, like corporations. So they strive to rid the world of the ills of life by creating a “just” government that will right the wrongs of life through force of law.
Conservatives believe that it is the individual who is responsible for himself, and his or her family. That it is individuals that are the creators of wealth, health, happiness and prosperity. These are self-evident rights, given to us my God- not government.
Christianity teaches that we are to change the world one heart and one soul at a time through forgiveness of sins and the redemption of the human heart—not through legislation, regulation and taxation.
