Why We Can’t Negotiate With Children or the Leftists in Washington

Follow the Left and soon America will have a toothless smile.

One of the common misconceptions parents hold today is the notion that they can reason with a child to convince him to obey or do what’s right. To use the politically correct terminology is “make good choices.”

This approach is based on the false premise that children have adult reasoning skills. In theory, it sounds like an enlightened form of parenting, but in reality, it plays out something like this:

“Johnny, it’s time to brush your teeth.”

“But I don’t want to brush my teeth”

“You have to, because if you don’t, all your teeth will fall out.”

Johnny nods, then smiles, walks away and says to himself, “Cool. Then I’d never have to brush my teeth!”

The inability to identify the real problem, and a short-sighted reasoning ability, with no regards to the long term consequences is the hallmark of childlike reasoning; as is the leftists currently in Washington.

Almost daily, we can see this play out on MSNBC’s Hardball with host Chris Matthews. Believing they are enlightened, it plays out like this:

Matthews asks guest Cynthia Tucker, columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

“Is [Scott Brown] going to be a real red hot conservative on fiscal issues or not?”

Tucker answers:

“…absolutely…he’ll be pushed further to the right by his party. There will not be any bipartisan health care bill either. That’s nonsense.

“One of the reasons Democrats are in so much trouble is that they wasted so much time trying to negotiate, in good faith, with Republicans that are not interested in negotiating at all.”

Try to ignore the lie that Democrats wasted time trying to negotiate, let’s focus on the last statement, and compare it with little Johnny’s reasoning issues and talk about negotiating a bipartisan health care bill.

What is all important to a child is the here and now. He is incapable of comparing the few minutes spent away from playing to brushing his teeth, to the expense of dental bills his parents will have to pay, the pain of decay he will later endure, let alone the decline in his health resulting from the early loss of his teeth.

While a child is too young to have an historical perspective or the capacity to understand future ramifications, leftists refuse to see the historical results of their ideology, therefore the future is the fantasy in their mind’s eye.

Just as Johnny’s false premise is that the only important thing is to not have to brush your teeth, the Left holds the false premise that a government controlled health care system is better than one run by a free market system. Both of their solutions are the problems.

For conservatives to negotiate with socialists over our health care system is like Johnny’s parents saying “Sure sweetie, you’re right, you only have to brush one tooth per week.”

To negotiate with socialists is to concede one freedom at a time, and allow the decay of socialism leave our Constitution toothless.
