Yo Man, Legalize It, Duuuuude

Pot legalization—the one topic that gets a college classroom riled up. I have seen no other issue that is more capable of making the guy dozing off as the professor talks suddenly become red-faced and articulate. Do not underestimate the power of this issue to get teenagers and young adults (and old adults wanting their kids to think they’re cool) out voting and working for candidates. When former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson runs for president, you’ll see what I mean.

Last night’s “Daily Show” segment indirectly brings home another point about legalization I’ve often thought about but have never heard voiced before. A correspondent goes to a store in Denver where medical marijuana is sold—in candy, lollipops, drinks, etc. And he says that there are hundreds of varieties of this pot available. Think about it. Those against legalization often say it’s unhealthy and will poison our society, but this reflects a lack of faith in capitalism. If there is a market for “healthier” pot, companies will make it.

Yes, just like with cigarettes, there will be companies exploiting those who don’t care about their health. Some forms of marijuana, just like fast food, will be more detrimental to your body than others. But the greater point is this: If you are concerned about the effects of weed, keeping it illegal restrains the free market from allowing companies to come up with ways to mitigate those effects so they can profit from it.

Concerned about the dangers of pot? Legalize it, and it’ll become safer.
