Unemployment and the Immigration Glut

With 10% unemployment, one would think that the government would consider lowering the number of green cards issued to foreign workers until Americans were back on their feet.  Amazingly, recently released data from the Department of Homeland Security shows that we have actually increased immigration.  Far from reflecting supply and demand, our legal immigration numbers continue to climb no matter the state of the national economy.

The latest figures come from fiscal year 2009.  The fiscal year began on October 1, 2008, which is when our economic collapse began and continued through September of 2009.  Over five million Americans lost their jobs over that period.

America issued 1,130,818 permanent green cards, 808,478 of which were given to immigrants of working age.  This is an increase over 2008 and 2007.  Excluding the extra green cards given after the 1986 amnesty, this was the second highest number of green cards issued since 1914.  From 2000 though 2009, we issued 10,299,430—the highest decade in American history.

In addition to the green cards, the government issued 881,840 temporary work visas and gave refugee or asylum status to 96,721 aliens.  The total increase to the American workforce was 1.75 million foreign workers. According to the Census Bureau, 1 out of every 6 workers is foreign born.

What are the possible justifications for this policy?  Are these immigrants taking jobs Americans won’t do?  With the unemployment rate at nearly 10%, no one can say this with a straight face.

Does this create diversity?  The pool of legal immigrants is rather un-diverse. Less than 10% of them come from Europe.

Does this decrease illegal immigration?  If that were the case, you would have expected the illegal immigration numbers to decline as legal immigration increased.  In fact, they have both skyrocketed.

Instead of talking about reducing these numbers, politicians are calling for raising the level of legal immigration.  Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), and Harry Reid (D-NV) recently released an outline for their ideas for “comprehensive immigration reform.” They call for adding an additional 3.4 million family visas and 550,000 work visas.

In the house, Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) and Solomon Ortiz’s (D-TX) introduced the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act (H.R. 4321) which makes the same proposals for increasing family and work visas, but one ups them by adding a special new visa category of 100,000 permanent green cards a year to go specifically to Latin American countries.

There are two bills in Congress that will reduce legal immigration.  Rep. Phil Gingrey’s  (R-GA) Nuclear Family Priority Act (H.R.878) will limit family based immigration and reduce 111,800 green cards.  Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s (R-VA) SAFE for America Act (H.R.2305 ) will eliminate the Visa Lottery category that grants 50,000 visas a year.  Unfortunately, the Republican leadership is not backing these bills and they only have 30 and 57 co-sponsors, respectively.

These bills are a great start, but even if they passed we’d still issue nearly one million green cards a year. If we really want to put Americans back to work, we need a moratorium across nearly all categories of legal immigration.  A moratorium will free up jobs for American citizens, reduce the stress on social services, and allow the immigrants already here to assimilate.

The only people who will lose out from a moratorium are the ethnic interests who want new constituents and the business lobbies who want cheap labor.  Unfortunately, both political parties are more concerned with the well-being of these special interests than the well-being American citizens.

Virgil Goode represented Virginia’s 5th Congressional District from 1997 to 2009.

Of course, the Dhimmicrats want to import as many Hispanic as possible because they know they will become permanent Dhimmicrat supporters.

This is a two pronged approach by the Leftists in control of this country. Immigrants from Muslim countries, and an invasion of illegals from the south.

Both breaking the social services system. The non assimilation of both cultures being pushed on to the American mainstream. From the south, non English speaking, from Dar al Islam, a culture of supremacist and self imposed isolation.
Anyone who points this out or complains is a racist and a bigot.

The Leftists are out-flanking the American people.

This must be the fundamental transformation that BO was talking about.

    Two more years…God save us.

For you young kids out there, we worked at McDs, TacoB, …etc. when we were in highschool. This is how we learned to work. It was assumed it was not a job that you could raise a family on. During the summer we worked construction. What do you kids do now? If you want a job at one of those places to get some cash while going to high school you have to compete with all the illegals that have those jobs that supposedly no American wants. So now we are stuck ordering one thing and getting something else cause Pedro doesnt understand engrish. Oh well, welcome to America

I am not excited about the repubs at all. It really ticks me off that they are backing illegal immigration by their non action. I guess I will have to vote for them one more time just cause we have to break up this current regime, but I am not sure they are the cure. We need new people in congress with term limits so these nuckle heads dont have enough time to figure out how to game the system for themselves.

    • fedup

The establishment Republicans are for illegal immigration, too. They just want it for the cheap labor. Both parties are complicit in this. Neither of them care about Americans…unless they have lobbyists and big campaign donations.

We need Virgil Goode back in Congress.

Illegal immigration is a minor problem. Our problems began with the passage of the 16th Amendment, authorizing an income tax. And income-tax rates can and have been raised upward and upward and upward, ever since, because most people can't choose to stop working in order to avoid the tax.

The federal government has virtually unlimited resources to do whatever the politicians want to individuals. Respect for the Constitution disappeared almost overnight with the passage of the 16th Amendment. The U.S. government plunged the nation into World War I, a strictly European war, something it couldn't have done without the income tax to finance the war effort. (The top rate quickly zoomed upward to 77% from 7% where it had been set in 1913.)

Today governments at all levels take on the average 50% of the national income. That means you work half your life to support the welfare state. And now there's no topic on which the politicians refuse to consider legislation. Your entire life is fair game for them to enact rules.

Sni[per: good post. However, I disagree with lyou that illegal immigration is a small problem. I Don't know where you live, but here in WNC it is a huge problem for the reasons stated by davarino.

Why is it that the Politically Correct crowd isn't all over the damocrat bill HR 4321 because of it's call for 100,000 permanent green carsds for Latin Americans?? This would also appear to be so radically bigoted that it wouldn't even get ,on the floor. Just imagine a bill like that for only white europeans. All H311 would break out. Why is the USA letting muslims in? why not do like in WWII and put them into camps? Radical? Absolutely, but we shouldn't coddle enemies!

The powerful of our country including the media, the politicians, the businessmen, financiers, certain high ranking clergy, politicized lawyers and well financed NGOs like the ACLU are waging war on the American people. Not only are they starving out the people but they have constructed laws that are discriminatory against the people. They act and talk as if the people are sub humans who should have no rights other than to grow old and die before they use up to much medicare money.

    . . . . . . .

    12. It is demagogy to claim as though there are jobs Americans will not do. Able boded Americans which do not take certain jobs are mostly permanent welfare recipients. They do not take those jobs not because they live on their savings, but because they live on other's savings – the taxes paid by those working hard. Therefore – stop welfare to able boded – and they will want to fill the positions that they disregarded otherwise. We must stop the current policy which destroys the job market, sustains a parasitic class and creates a new under class of illegals.

  • http://www.resonoelusono.com/NaturalBornCitizen.htm Alexander Gofen

No amnesty to illegals in any form! All illegal residents must leave the United States in phased process, which begins with immediate deportation of all convicted illegals in prisons.

    – Verify authenticity of any questionable social security card by asking to produce several supporting documents such as a proof of a legal entry, or otherwise the US birth certificate, the US passport, and similar. Failure to do that is a reason for deportation.

    – Stop all entitlements to illegals, stop all services to them, speak to them only in English – and many will leave on their own.

    – Obligate the employers to verify every identity and to report it in case of doubts. Otherwise the employer must be indicted in criminal offense.

    – Build that wall along the entire Mexican border, and have all the border agents to do their job.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Rifleman Rifleman

Self deportation is the way. If they can't get work, and they can't get welfare, they'll self deport. It's much cheaper.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/ratchett2 ratchett2

I agree with Rifleman, if they can't get welfare, they will leave. We have created a society that invites them to freeload, send them packing. The very word illegal means illegal.
Can't wait for Nov and 2012 to throw the Chicago Thug and his liberal minions out on their leftist butts.

Here is a real eyeopener for all of you! I'm in the grocery store waiting behind an "Hispanic speaking" mother with her 3 small children in tow…her cart was overflowing with groceries…when she finished unloading she completed her transaction using an Arizona Food Stamp Card…Okay…I have a heart…she must qualify…after all…children need to eat…who am I to judge, right? Well, my 35 year old son had worked at his job for over 10 years. He was born and raised in Arizona, always employed and forever playing "responsibly"….cripes…I can remember him having a paper route when he was 10 years old and saving up for his first "chrome ollie" bike…In 2008 his company (where he has been employed for over 10 years) laid him off due to extreme downsizing of the company…well, after exhausting his savings, his 401 K and maxing out his credit cards just to keep going, he was left with the embarrassment of applying for food stamps…what did Arizona allocate for him? Well….a whopping $40.00 per month!!!!!!! YES….that's $40.00 A MONTH….together we laughed and decided that if we don't use it from now till Christmas…you know, just let the pot of money grow…we can plan on a real nice feast for Christmas dinner!!!!!! Wake up America…this is a crime!!! Where is the justice…where? You tell me?????

  • AzDebi

Once you deport ALL the illegals, our kids will have the kind of summer jobs we used to do and they'll LEARN how to WORK…then you get the welfare sucking bums off the dole and when they get hungry enough they'll gladly do the jobs left vacant by the illegals! The way I see it, "2" major problems solved…AND…you could probably accomplish this in less than 2 years! Wake up America! We've had enough!

  • BS1977

We have urged a moratorium on legal immigration for over ten years….and a complete deportation system for illegal immigrants. We support Arizona's measure…it is just a copy of Federal law anyway…to bad the Feds will not enforce their own laws!!! Stop all social services to illegals….no jobs, no schooling, no free this and free that….get these "undocumented Democrats" back across the border. Let them make Mexico a better nation and then apply for a visa and citizenship in the US like all other immigrants. The present situation is very dangerous….it is chaos, anarchy and unprecedented in that fugitives from Mexican justice, criminals, and thieves are crashing our boder ….our jails and prisons are packed with illegals. Illegals driving drunk kill US citizens frequently…our Federal Govt is doing little or nothing to get control of this INVASION…and that's what it is, an invasion.

  • Pancho

The real reason that illegal immigration exists in the United States of America is that the government and corporations want it. It is part of the strategy to “Divide and Conquer” and stay in power.

In the 60s, the average American started taking a good, hard look at what our government and corporations were doing. Americans finally started to wake up from our long slumber, and when we did, we were appalled at what we saw. We started to unite , and when we did, we were appalled at what we saw. We started to unite; it did not mater if one was white, brown, black, red, or yellow, we were all Americans. We had a common enemy, the corrupt: entrenched bureaucrats, professional politicians, and corporations. They saw the writing on the wall, the days of “business as usual” were numbered.

  • Pancho

To combat this new awakening in the American public, the strategy bureaucrats, politicians, and corporations adopted was a three-pronged attack: mass immigration, legal and illegal; introducing the concept of multiculturalism; and creating the mechanism to fund legal challenges to any attempt by the American people regain control.

Up until the mid 60s, the United States of America had a conservative immigration policy that allowed approximately 100,000 to 200,000 foreign nationals a year into the U.S. Then it was changed. Over a million foreign nationals a year were allowed to enter the U.S. legally and illegally. There are now approximately 11 million foreign nationals illegally in the U.S. This demonstrates that illegal immigration is condoned, and is even rewarded by the government through social programs and amnesty. The new immigrants were encouraged to settle in separate communities, and retain their culture and language, discouraging assimilation into American culture and any attempts to define themselves as simply “American”.

  • Pancho

The birth of multiculturalism was the next part of the attack on American solidarity. Ethnic studies was introduced on campuses and schools around the country, and later became a mandatory class. Ethnic studies evolved into ethnic clubs, and later departments based on race, e.g. Black studies, Latino studies, etc. Ethnic studies gave birth to a quasi-nationalism based on race. The hyphenated American was born. This created further conflict and division among the American people.

  • Pancho

The final prong of this attack was the use of foundations, e.g., the Ford Foundation, etc. to funnel money from corporations to special interest groups, e.g., MEChA, La Raza, and their variants. These in turn fund special interest law firms, e.g., MALDEF, to challenge any attempt by the American citizen to regain control of our country. The American citizens have repeatedly: introduced legislation, e.g. prop 187, etc, voted on it, and had it overwhelmingly approved by the voters, only to have these special interest law firms challenge the legislation, tie it up in the courts, then have it struck down by a judge with a political agenda. The final insult happened when the elected officials failed to appeal that lower court decision and fight to have the will of the people protected, as they are required by law to do.

I could not have said it any better other than the driving force behind the destruction of our country has been orchestrated by the Rockefeller CFR/Trilateral Commission.

We all are witnessing a coup d'état by the Rockefeller Elite that intend on converting us to a New World Order.

Our own Congress and President are guilty of Treason.

  • Jim

NO AMNESTY OF ANY KIND, PERIOD, we need lower LEGAL immigration too, no more nonsense or this country will be in civil war within a couple of years–if we last that long!

  • Wolf

Obama and his Democrats, along with the Progressive Republicans, hate the American People and the United States. It's obvious that they intend to destroy it and bring the world under one government.

"There's class warfare, all right, Mr. (Warren) Buffett said, but it's my class, the rich class, that's making war, and we're winning"

"My friends and I have been coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress." – Billionaire Warren Buffett, in a New York Times op-ed on Aug. 15.

There has been class warfare going on," Buffett, 81, said in a Sept. 30 interview with Charlie Rose on PBS. It's just that my class is winning. And my class isn't just winning, I mean we're killing them."

"While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks," Buffett wrote in a Sunday New York Times Op-ed.
