The Self-Destructive Insanity of Pro-Palestinian Gay Activists

Bruce Bawer is a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center and the author of “While Europe Slept” and “Surrender.” His book "The Victims' Revolution: The Rise of Identity Studies and the Closing of the Liberal Mind" is just out from Broadside / Harper Collins.

On November 22, the New York Times ran an op-ed by the radical leftist lesbian Jewish playwright Sarah Schulman which did a great public service – it provided a perfect illustration of the utter lunacy of the anti-Israeli, pro-Palestinian queer left.

Schulman opened her piece, entitled “Israel and ‘Pinkwashing,’” by quoting a line from William Butler Yeats (a writer who, incidentally, would have found both her work and her politics utterly vile).  The line, also the title of a famous short story by Delmore Schwartz, was this: “In dreams begin responsibilities.”  Schulman maintained that Yeats’s words “resonate with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people who have witnessed dramatic shifts in our relationship to power.”  She meant by this that while gay people have won rights and respect in various countries around the world, “these changes have given rise to a nefarious phenomenon: the co-opting of white gay people by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim political forces in Western Europe and Israel.”

Schulman went on to express her revulsion at the enthusiasm of some Dutch gays for the late Pim Fortuyn and for the very much alive Geert Wilders, and at the fact that the English Defense League has over a hundred gay members.  She also took me on: “In Norway,” she wrote, “Anders Behring Breivik, the extremist who massacred 77 people in July, cited Bruce Bawer, a gay American writer critical of Muslim immigration, as an influence.”  (In fact, Breivik made it clear in his writings that I was not an influence on him – he considered me too much of a libertarian.  But no matter.)

The “depictions of immigrants” by people like me and Wilders “as ‘homophobic fanatics,’” wrote Schulman, “opportunistically ignore the existence of Muslim gays and their allies within their communities.”  On the contrary, I and many other anti-jihadists have written extensively about gay Muslims.  What Schulman “opportunistically ignores” is that gay Muslims in Western Europe tend to live in terror of being found out by their families and communities.  Their very lives are at risk.  So dire is their plight that until recently there was not a single “out” gay Muslim in all of Norway, where I live.  I am now personally acquainted with the country’s first openly gay male Muslim and its first openly lesbian Muslim, and I can inform Schulman that their lives have been made exceedingly difficult by the Muslim communities that Schulman is so eager to defend.

To depict Muslims as antigay, Schulman further maintained, is to “render invisible the role that fundamentalist Christians, the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Jews play in perpetuating fear and even hatred of gays.”  Yes, there’s hostility to gay people all over the place.  The difference is that even the most famously gay-hating Christian on the planet, Fred “God Hates Fags” Phelps, doesn’t call for the murder of gay people and, as far as I know, has not killed any gays himself.  By contrast, sharia law prescribes the death penalty for homosexuality – a punishment that has been carried out innumerable times by the governments of several Islamic countries as well as by countless Muslim families both in the Muslim world and in the West.

But does Schulman care about that?  Apparently not.  She is the kind of leftist for whom ideology will always trump reality.  What she is exercised about is the fact that Israel is, according to her, marketing itself as gay-friendly: Tel Aviv’s tourism board, for example, is spending about $90 million “to brand the city as ‘an international gay vacation destination.’”  Also, Benjamin Netanyahu told the U.S. Congress in May “that the Middle East was ‘a region where women are stoned, gays are hanged, Christians are persecuted.’”

I read her piece and was outraged that this nonsense was given a massive audience in the New York Times.

The piece is all over the place but her most egregous claim is that homosexuality was legal in the the disputed territories as soon as the 1950s because Jordanian aw was based on a British system. This claim is clearly nonsense and what's more homosexual sex was not made legal in Britain until 1967. Are we lead to believe that Jordanian muslims were more progressive in this matter than Britain.

I live in Israel and am gay. I grew up in America and I see absolutely no difference between my freedom to be what I want here than I did in America.

That is a reality Shulman ignores out of ideology , as Bruce Bawer rightly points out here.

People who really care about human rights should focus their energy on the muslim Middle East. But that will not happen. The demonization of Israel has to continue for these people, to the absurd point of chiding Israel for giving rights to people and blaming Israel for pointing out the lack of such rights in the muslim world.

I am fairly certain the left believes that Israel is a free society just for propaganda purposes and to piss them and muslims friends off.

    • aspacia

      Bravo Shawn:-)

Shulman probably just wanted another 5 minutes of fame at Israel's expense. She will be the first to suffer at Muslim hands.

    • Sylvie7

How tiresome people like Shulman are. I appreciate your article Shawn , especially your instructive comments about homosexuality in English law. The treatment of gays in England was notoriously bad. I didn't know that the status of common law marriage has been used to simplify the lives of same sex couples. When I first came to Israel many years ago, I'd never heard of such a status. It solved problems for heterosexual partners who for whatever reason could not marry in a religious ceremony._Shulman lives in a world governed by concepts which were rejected long ago by people of my father's generation who had been "verbrennte socialists/communists:" until they faced the reality of what life in the socialist east was all about. To spend a life time angry at the world because of one's sexual orientation seems pretty sad, but perverting reality because of it is just plain stupid.

  • Nakba1948

LBGT people know more than most what discrimination and oppression is like. They know it when they see it. That is why many of them stand corageously with the Palestinian people. Zionist Jews should be ashamed of themselves. They were discriminated against once upon a time and now they revisit that upon others? Zionism=Nazi! Palestine will be free, from the river to the sea!

    • tarleton

This is a perfect example of the liberal schooling system …utterly juvenile and pathetic …any adult who can write such drivel should be ashamed of themselves
My only hope is that you can come crashing into reality someday

      • http://savageinfidel.blogspot.com/ Shawn

Tarleton, I would say what "Nakba" wrote is even sinister. Calling Jews Nazis is, of course, insulting since Jews were the primary victims of the Nazis. Nothing new about saying that. Muslims say it all the time and believe it. But pretending to care about Jewish suffering and then go on to call for the destruction of the only Jewish country is the world is genocidal.

        • Herman Caintonette

If you have been on the business end of persecution and injustice, you find it a lot easier to appreciate the Palestinians' plight.

If Israel had been created with the blessings of its neighbors and the people who used to live there, you could make your argument. Still, the one stumbling-block for the rest of us is that you stole their land.

          • http://savageinfidel.blogspot.com/ Shawn

No one stole anything. That is absurd. If that were true, Israel would not be a member of the UN or a recognized nation.

One really needs to ask themselves firstly, what are Arabic speaking Muslims doing in Israel in the first place. Arabia is far far away from here. Israel is the historic homeland of Jews and is the center of Christianity's holy places which existed many many centuries before Islam was invented in Mecca.

The Jewish people's reestablishment of a democratic state and the return of the exiles is an fact of such extraordinary redemption that it scarcely needs pointing out.

If anyone stole land from anyone, in other words, it was Muslims stealing from Christians and Jews who lived here since the earliest times of history to, thank God, the present.

So please take your "Stealing Land" argument down the road and dump it.

          • Herman Caintonette

Given that the vast majority of Jews abandoned that land as long as 2500 years ago, and that many are converts who have no genetic connection to the land at all, it is hard to make your argument with a straight face.

          • Advocatus

Herman, that sounds like the rantings of an ill-informed ideologue. You'll have to do better than that to convince me you have a point. How much do you know about genetics, for starters? Not that much by the sound of it. And while you're at it. would you care to explain the Palestinians' "genetic connection" to the land? I'm eagerly awaiting your learned response.

          • UCSPanther

And maybe you should look up the prescribed penalties for embracing the alternative lifestyle in the Arab countries-including Palestine-that you admire so much.

I'll give you a hint: It is a capital offense…

          • Herman Caintonette

Thomas Jefferson would have agreed with them, as do many Christians today. It has nothing to do with the question of whether Palestine belongs, in equity, to the Palestinians.

          • stern

On November 15, this poster wrote:
“[Palestinians] deserve to have a state on the land that was stolen from them. If killing Jewish kids aids in this endeavor, morally speaking, they are legitimate targets."

Do NOT engage with this person. By denying it the light it desires, we can eradicate this vile virus.

          • Herman Caintonette

Again, when you denounce YHWH as immoral, you can complain. Until then, spare us all the hysteria.

    • mah29001

Hey dummy….Sharia Law bans homosexuality which is what even the "moderate" Palestinian Authority preach as well as Hamas….looks like they found the perfect Foghorn Leghorn to believe the crap coming out of the mouth of a Palestinian Jew-hating Colonel Sanders.

    • Citizen-Comrade

If only all peoples would embrace Bolshevisim the world would blossom as a man-made paradise. All Power To The Peoples Vanguard!

    • David

Pure dumb Nakba. First, there is no such thing as "LGBT people." That is a made-up term that does not reflect reality. If we are talking about gay people, let's call them gay people.

Second, if Zionists were Nazis, there would be no Palestinians and no Israeli Arabs. They would have been killed or expelled long ago. Which, come to think of it is exactly what your Hamas heroes pledge to do to the Israeli Jews.

  • Nehama

Mr. Bawer wrote: To be sure, it never stops being remarkable to me that anyone who professes to care about human freedom – especially someone who is gay and a woman and a Jew! – can be anything but a fervent supporter of Israel, a small free country surrounded by Jew-hating, woman-oppressing, gay-killing neighbors that are intent on destroying it.

The bottom line is that Islam cannot abide freedom for Jews (or any non-believers), women or gays, so Israel's very existence and the sanctuary it provides is a threat to Islam. The existence of Israel undermines the core belief of Islam, that the Koran is actually true. Ergo, the Muslim states will always be at war with Israel because real freedom is an insult to Islam.

  • FriendofGaryCooper

    What planet is Schulman on?

    • BS77

It's called Planet Lefto…..a planet where none of the usual laws of physics, rationality, logic or reason can exist. It's a place for lemming peace marchers, liberal college professors from the ivory tower heights of La La Land University. OWS has a special tent village on Planet Lefto….They built a station there and are now awaiting the arrival of the socialist gravy train…trouble is, it does not exist…but try to tell them that.

    • Ghostwriter

      It seems not this one.

  • Jonathan Phelps

Fred Phelps' standard is the same as the Bible's. Duly constituted governmental authority must comply with Leviticus 20:13 or perish in their own corruption. Leviticus 20:13 says: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." It is a gender neutral rule of law.

Jonathan B. Phelps, on behalf of your friends at Westboro Baptist Church

    • Chiggles

I hope the day is not long in coming when you degenerates are protesting a funeral and someone goes Lars Breivik on your sorry ar$es.

    • UCSPanther

Either you are trolling, or you represent that pathetic "Synangogue of Satan" you call a church. And yes, that verse applies more to hate-mongering religious freaks like you than to the Jews.

Now get lost. You Westboro Baptist vultures are scum.

    • aspacia

Do you really want me to critique the Bible for you? You are following the Torah, the Jewish Holy Book; do you follow its other violent principles of stoning too?

    • http://visionsandprinciples.blogspot.com/ InRussetShadows

Then Fred Phelps does not know how to read the Bible, as he fails to understand that America is not the nation of Israel. God made a covenant with Israel, and Leviticus was part of that covenant. God made no such covenant with America, and individual Christians are not bound by the Law, but rather bound by Love. Go read Hebrews to see what I mean, Jonathan.

Schulman is one of those activist types desperately clinging to a purpose. They become deluded in their search to justify their existence.
One can see this phenomenon in the 'Civil Rights' arena, Feminism, and currently in this 'Occupy' nonsense.

  • NotaBene

    One, it isn't true that Israel is the only place in the Middle East where LGBT people can feel safe;
    http://www.nowlebanon.com/NewsArchiveDetails.aspx

Two, do you really think supporting the continued occupation and vilification of LGBT Palestinians does them any good?

Third, how do you think the ultraorthodox who are rapidly consuming Israel feel about gays? Any more progressive than your beloved 'islamofascists'?

    • aspacia

      Note Bene,
If Hizbollah takes total control of Lebanon, these gays are toast. I support Israel, she is the victim of aggression and should annex all Gaza, The West Bank and retake the Sinai because the Arabs initiated the violent attacks and have violated every treaty they have made with Israel and the West in general.

Regardless of the orthadox population increase, Israel is secular, and will remain so according to their constitution. The USA is also secular, and has many fundamentalist Christians who accept secular laws.

      The analogy is similar.

It is heartbreaking to see pictures of teenage boys being hung in Iran because they are gay. Ruthless, hard-hearted Schulman does not protest this evil. She is despicable.

Schulman is another wicked person who immorally tries to connect Anders Behring Breivik, the extremist who massacred 77 people in July, to good, decent people as Bawer and Geert Wilders, who speak out in defense of human rights for ALL people. Under Islamic sharia law, women are treated as inferior and defenseless non-Muslims have NO human rights.

  • waterwillows

I am surprised that so few people have as yet not connected the dots. Nor have many looked down the road to investigate the consquences of their 'tolerance' and worse…. acceptance.
This allowing of the full frontal assualt of the gay agenda to empower itself, is unwise to say the least. And it is downright dangerous to commit the school system to educate young children that the gay lifestyle is normal and acceptable.
The handing over of a nations sexual idenity to a specialized group of deviants will lead to terrible consquences that many have not bothered to consider.

Men are really not designed to be a decent and just group when they turn away from the natural inclincation for women and are encouraged to replace it for men.
Look at the Afghan nation and you will see how this 'young gay training' has worked out for the nation.
Should the larger poplulation of females be put into the background of insignificence in order to accomodate the fewer numbers of the gay community? Yet, this has happened.

  • http://savageinfidel.blogspot.com/ Shawn

The link you posted is about people fighting for Gay rights in Lebanon. Good for them. But the difference is that in Israel the fight has been won long ago. There is no issue. It's over. Gay in Lebanon do not feel safe. I can promise you that.

Israel is a society rooted in secular law. Not religious law. The religious population in this country are worried about Torah and not what other people do sexually.

I live here and I know.

    • UCSPanther

The Bah'ia sect has also moved their center to Israel because of the savage persecution that they suffer at the hands of Islamic fanatics (especially the Iranians), who consider them fair game because they are not considered "people of the book", and thus targetted for extermination right off the bat.

    • Herman Caintonette

Torah does worry about what two men do in the bedroom, does it not? Leviticus, if memory serves.

BS: "I guess you cannot dispute anything now days without being accused of having ulterior motives."

Especially here, where anyone who has a principled disagreement with the Zionist position on Israel is reflexively denounced as an anti-Semite. He who lives in a glass house should not get into the habit of throwing stones.

          • Advocatus

"Zionist position on Israel," Herman? What would that entail by your lights? Should I be dropped off in a Muslim country and killed just because I oppose collectivism and support private property rights and therefor don't believe that people have the right to a piece of land because of something trivial and collectivist like ethnicity or ancestry? "Qur'an (7:80-84) – "…For ye practice your lusts on men in preference to women: ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds…. And we rained down on them a shower (of brimstone)" – An account that is borrowed from the Biblical story of Sodom. Muslim scholars through the centuries have interpreted the "rain of stones" on the town as meaning that homosexuals should be stoned, since no other reason is given for the people's destruction. (The story is also repeated in suras 27 and 29).

Qur'an (7:81) – "Will ye commit abomination such as no creature ever did before you?" This verse is part of the previous text and it establishes that homosexuality as different from (and much worse than) adultery or other sexual sin. According to the Arabic grammar, homosexuality is called the worst sin, while references elsewhere describe other forms of non-marital sex as being "among great sins."

Qur'an (26:165-166) – "Of all the creatures in the world, will ye approach males, "And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your mates? Nay, ye are a people transgressing"

Qur'an (4:16) – "If two men among you are guilty of lewdness, punish them both. If they repent and amend, Leave them alone" "

Back in 2005, Andrei S. Markovits, writing in the relatively progressive magazine Dissent, said, “A new European (and American) commonality for all lefts—a new litmus test of progressive politics—seems to have developed: anti-Americanism and anti-Zionism (though not anti-Semitism, at least not yet).” Sarah Schulman shows how right Markovits was. She must pass the litmus test by being anti-Israel, despite Israel’s remarkable history of pioneering in gay rights.

Schulman cites an Israeli professor, Aeyal Gross, as saying that “gay rights have essentially become a public relations tool.” Good! Israel should publicize its virtue, especially if doing so will show the world that freedom can expand even in a threatened country. Gross adds that “conservative and especially religious politicians remain fiercely homophobic.” That is no surprise. Israel has freedom of thought and many differing opinions coexist there. Gross and Schulman, however, must pass the litmus test by looking for reasons to be anti-Israel.

  • Marcel Hatch

So as a gay I should support Israel's ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people? Is that the bargain being offered here?

    • Sylvie7

What ongoing "genocide" are you talking about. The one that exists primarily in Arab propaganda? You obviously believe propaganda. How exactly is Israel carrying out genocide? You can't cite statistics; you can't identify places where the dead are buried. You may not have noticed that the destruction of Israel is an honored goal of Hamas, Hizballah, Iran etc. They aren't throwing bouquets at Israeli towns. There is no excuse for blind acceptance of lies.

    • RonCo

So, you should go to a Muslim country and declare that you are gay and the good Muslims there will then kill you and you will no longer be able to make the most absurd statements like "Israel is conducting genocide against the Palestinian people" who are not really a distinct people anyway as they are Arabs like every other Arab.

  • http://www.theaugeanstables.com rlandes

and your evidence for genocide is…? the precipitous rise of palestinian populations under israeli occupation?

  • nagaram

The libertarian/individualist/pro-freedom stance on Israel/Palestine is that no one has the right to a piece of land because of something trivial and collectivist like ethnicity or ancestry, so how am I as a gay person "self-destructive" if I simply believe in private property rights? No I don't agree with the anti-gay laws in Muslim countries, but some Muslims are gay and trying to free people by killing them makes no sense. The only way one can believe in liberty is to subscribe to the principles self-ownsership, which includes the right of an individual to defend themselves, whether its against a single mugger or a government (eg Israel).

    • NotaBene

Nice try, nagaram. Being all logical like that will get you called an anti-semite and worse.

Bottom line is that the Islamists plan on killing every New in the world. These Islamists also will put people to death for being a homosexual. Islamists will promise anyone anything to get the inside track. It is either actually or constructively for Jews to be present in most Muslim majority countries. These Islamists and their pinko allies falsely call Israel an apartheid state when in fact their neighboring states are the apartheid states.

    The Unholy Alliance

You read about this type of relationship all throughout the bible of evil alliances between nations or ideologies that were against God or what he stood for. Once they finish using them to accomplish their goals or evil deeds they discarded them like a sack of trash. I find it amusing that LBGT community would even dare think about siding with thiese clowns knowing of the attrocities committed against women or homosexual men. You see the same thing with socialists among us who have hated the United States and what it stood for since day one. You always see them defending this "religion of peace" while at the same time professing how firmly they stand for individiual freedoms. What's really a trip is that they slam Christianity for oppressing them. LOL!!!!!! Stupidity never ceases to amaze me. The bottom line is, those that hate our nation will side with Satan himself to see it fall. How ridiculously sad!!!

This woman's unwavering support for the poor downtrodden Arabs with their anti Israel, Islamist agenda makes her little more than a proxy for spread of Islam & the ultimate creation of a world wide Caliphate with Sharia providing the rules under which we would live.
Devout Muslims constantly use all manner of Taquia, (subversion by any other name), to spread their vile belief.
I wonder if she is liberal minded enough to recognise the irony of her foolish & misguided support.

Why do people like this believe that they have any moral authority in this issue or any other? I am gay and I find her views relevant only to the extent that I can check against them to make sure I am taking the opposite position. She is revolted by gays' support of Fortuyn and Wilders? Good! All the more reason to have supported Fortuyn and to support Wilders. This woman confuses her own twisted emotions with matters of consequence.

The vast majority of gays understand that Islam is a threat to human freedom and that it is no accident that Israel stands as a virtual island of liberty in a sea of brutality and repression. As for Israel's treatment of the Palestinians, that treatment would ease considerably if the Palestinians would cease blowing up pizzerias and firing rockets at schools. Until they cease and desist, Israel has every right to treat them as a security threat. Of course, when Palestinians were deemed a security threat in Jordan in 1970 or in Saudi Arabia in 1990 or in liberated Kuwait in 1991, they were simply expelled. And Ms. Schulman said nothing about that. So maybe that is the course Israel should follow . . .
