Alok Vaid-Menon, president of Stanford University’s Students for Queer Liberation, echoed similar concerns regarding the military’s exclusion of the transgendered: “A re-introduction of ROTC on college campuses (including Stanford, Harvard, and Columbia) that include ‘gender identity’ in their non-discrimination clause is a fundamental violation of policy and an endorsement of discrimination.”

Like the Ivy League, the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines are exclusive institutions. Recruits must pass physical and mental tests. There are size and age restrictions. Moral issues, such as a criminal past or heavy drug use, can disqualify. Elite colleges are similarly particular about who gains entrance. Top students not only understand why such exclusionary measures are necessary for the Ivy League, they take pride in them. Why, then, do they cry “discrimination”—as if it were always a dirty world—at the military for employing selectivity? There have always been people ineligible for military service just as there have always been people ineligible for Columbia, Brown, and Harvard.

The rationalizations—the Vietnam War, the exclusion of gays, transgender rights—have changed. The contempt for the armed services has not.

As is the case at other schools, justifications for keeping ROTC out of Columbia run the gamut. “Transpeople are part of the Columbia community,” remarked one student. A sign–bearer explained via placard: “1 in 3 female soldiers experiences sexual assault in the military.” “Universities should not be involved in military activities,” Professor Emeritus Herbert Gans told the New York Post. “Columbia should come out against spending $300 billion a year on unnecessary wars.”

One wonders what issues would arise as hurdles for ROTC to overcome should the military address the aforementioned concerns. Ageism? Handicappism? Fatsoism? There are scores of phony reasons for banning ROTC. There is one real reason: academia hates the military.

More than forty years ago, when the activists of the 1960s first succeeded in kicking ROTC off college campuses, the buzzphrase of bad-faith radicals was “the issue is not the issue.” It still isn’t.

At one mid western school only undergraduates could vote for student government. The persistently voted to keep ROTC mandatory . That changed when they allowed graduate students to also vote for student government. When the graduate students were allowed to vote ROTC was no longer mandatory. Later ROTC was eliminated.

The graduate students were not eligible for ROTC . However ROTC for undergraduates could be extended for four years. The undergraduates saw some career opportunities
in taking all four years. The graduate students were not affected by ROTC but they thought nothing of denying an opportunity to undergraduates.

Most of the undergraduates were from the same state as the location of the college but the graduate students were from other states. They had no business deciding if there should be ROTC or not.

They should have their own separate student Government and stop meddling in undergraduate affairs.

"Queer Liberation, exclusion of the transgendered" – and this is what consumes the best "minds" in the so called Ivy League, or rather a Slimy Clique! A clique of "liberasts" who lost all moral bearings and common sense!

It was a deadly social mistake to decriminalize homosexual behavior and let homosexuals "out of their closets". Now the homosexual Mafia is pushing the rest of us into the closets, defiles our kids in the schools, and dreams to criminalize a mere expression of objections against them (as Eurabia and Canada have done). Wake up, America!

    • RIGHT VS. MIGHT

Wow, so you are admitting that YOU are in the closet-Hmmmm….Please stay there, as a gay man I would never touch you, we do have standards-you are not within that standard-you are unattractive and actually UGLY, I would never touch you even if we were cell mates and I was extremely desperate. You wish we wanted kids but we don't, Kinsey study proved years ago 85% of molesters are PROFESSED HETERO MALES DUMMIE…Stop eating in restaurants-we make your food, we are your pilots, doctors, lawyers, gardeners, employers, nurses and so on…I am a veteran and I served in a war zone for your dumb ass. You are a SHAMEFUL STR8 person in the closet-so typical. Whose "MORAL" value are you talking about here? The one that allows men like you to molest children, beat women, kill gays, steal, create wars all in the name of god…YOUR "MO" is so obvious-keep yelling and spewing out your diarrhea I'm sure if you do it enough no one will notice what you are trying to cover up for…being all that you say you despise. I think I saw you at the local park bathroom recently with another guy in the stall.

Of course you are jewish….the oppressed truly become the oppressed! I have jewish friends but not Zionists…the jewish people like yourself are a discredit to ALL jews, in fact it is historically known a lot of wealthy jews funded hitler and assisted in the killing of not just jews as is ALWAYS portrayed but of gays & lesbians, trade unionists, catholics, mentally disabled and crippled people, blacks, gypsies and many others. Jews like to use this historical event for their own gain, influence and manipulation of events and people in the world-its disgusting! WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME "GAYS" had a SYMBOL ON THE MAJORITY OF FOOD PACKAGES ACROSS THE ENTIRE GLOBE? OR BLACKS? OR WOMEN'S GROUPS OR ANY OTHER GROUP FOR THAT MATTER? MORE THAN 11 MILLION PEOPLE DIED/WERE KILLED UNDER HITLER, FUNDED BY JEWS AND NON-JEWS SO QUIT WEARING IT LIKE IT IS THE JEWISH MONOPOLY OF EVENTS! FDR(FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT) WAS A JEW-OUR PRESIDENT DURING WWII, WHEN JEWS WERE SENT ON SHIPS HERE TO AMERICA FOR ASYLUM, OLE FDR PUT MORE JEWS AND NON-JEWS ON BOARD, SENT THEM BACK AND THEY WERE KILLED BY HITLER-SO STOP LYING AND SKEWING THE ACTUAL FACTS! IT IS JEWS LIKE YOU THAT SHAME THE JEWS AND OTHERS THAT WERE VICTIMS TO THIS HORRIBLE EVENT IN HISTORY.

FURTHERMORE, THE CONGOLESE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN IN A HOLOCAUST FOR -MORE THAN 5 YEARS AND MORE THAN 5 MILLION HAVE BEEN KILLED, COMPLIMENTS OF THE OLE U.S.A. FOR A RESOURCE THAT IS USED IN CELL PHONES, AHHH…BUT THEN THEY'RE NOT JEWISH PEOPLE-JUST AFRICANS……HOW ABOUT RUSSIA DURING STALIN'S REIGN, MORE THAN 3 MILLION PEOPLE WERE EXECUTED-OH BUT THEY WEREN'T JEWS SO ITS NOT NOTE WORTHY! MR. GOFEN, YOU ARE JUST LIKE THE CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS AND ALL OTHER RELIGIOUS ZEALOTS ON THIS PLANET THAT ARE CREATING SUCH HAVOC AND VOLATILE EVENTS. STOP IT!

Oh, do you like music and movies, live productions? Well, the majority of production crew, performers and others associated with the aforementioned-GAY-that's right so you have to be sincere across the board and stop participating in life because we have our hands in ALL areas-THINK…..YES, THINK ABOUT IT! BE TRUE TO YOURSELF AND STOP LYING-YOU ARE ONE OF US AND IF YOU WANT TO SHUN US-PLEASE DO SO BY NOT UTILIZING US ANY FURTHER…..LASTLY, DON'T PROCREATE WHATEVER YOU DO……

So-called "transgendered" people are nothing of the sort. Men who get castrated, no matter what the external appearances, are eunuchs, but still men; women who have removed their sexual organs, whatever their external appearance, are still women. Their DNA shows this. Whether eunuchs are suitable in the military is for the military to decide. As well, women who pretend to be men must be judged by the military – they are not men, no matter how much they tinker with their appearance. Women are not usually good as soldiers, with some exceptions like Joan of Arc.
The arguments against ROTC are ridiculous. Let the student decide whether he wants the military training; it is good for the military to have college-educated people. It is ridiculous to say that universities should not train the military – why not? They have in the past, with success.

  • William Griffith

Make no mistake – the Progressives – including most of the Democrats in Congress, the Executive Branch and the judiciary HATE the military and the "bitter clinger's" class from which the volunteers to said military flow !

  • Laura

The "gay" discrimination accusation is just a tactic. The opposition is to the military.
I remember reading in an environmental journal a praise of the "spotted owl" tactic – the preservation of the supposedly endangered spotted owl preserved land from development. The "owl" was just a tactic, in a greater goal.
The question is, why are so many of these students against the military?
As far as "gays" go, I understand that a percentage of the population is biologically oriented in that direction, but why the huge emphasis on it in academia?

    • Guest

"The question is, why are so many of these students against the military?"

Leftist's hate the military as they hate all things alpha male/paternalistic. The Radical Left is disproportionately made up of patriphobes. Re: http:// MaxEntropy.squrespace.com

      • Guest

        squarespace NOT squrespace. Sorry

    • Ken

Uh, you're a colossal idiot. Why would people fight to JOIN the military using an anti-military tactic?

  • John

To quote this article: "Conrad Honicker, an Emory University freshman, complained in the school paper that the military has “no services in place to update gender, and trans-related health care is systematically denied to transgender service members and veterans…. How can we justify bringing ROTC and military recruiters onto our campus when their values so clearly contradict our affirmation of our transgender friends and peers?”

You see, it's all about "give me, give me, give me,." and their pathetically misguided sexual agendas. You SERVE in the military to protect this great nation, to build it up, and protect it's citizens and our Constitution and way of life. There is no "give me, give me, give me." Most of this selfish generation would be well to be associated with something far greater than themselves. Why don't you all get lost. Get lost in something beside your sex drive and your perverted ideas and sense of fairness. Do something in the world that let's the rest of us know you are a contributor, not just a burden. You'll be the first screaming at the top of your lungs to "Save me, Save me," and won't lift a finger to do anything to save yourselves or anyone else. Soldiers are the only heros' this country has left. This level of selfish administrators of thiscurrent administration and Congress certainly isn't anyone that I would teach my children to immulate. You've been watching too much of what Hollywood has become. I know I can depend on a soldier. I can't say the same for you.

    • elmaddog

Conrad Honicker has changed positively both the law in his state and in his country, has walked the walk, has been invited to the White House by the President of the United States, has made his family and friends proud, has the support of millions of Americans who believe that speaking out and standing up for freedom is not only a birthright but a responsibility. So, since you like Ad Hominem attacks so well , here is one for you. He is a good man, and you are too blind to even notice. Who even are you?
So don't to speak to me. I am soldier. I have fought more battles than you have kissed women. Or men. You are a little boy, John, and your loyalty to your captors is touching.

  • Rifleman

If they had the courage of their convictions, they'd reject all federal money at these schools, but they don't, and never do. They'll never lack an excuse to oppose the US military. No ROTC, no federal grants or tuition assistance to the school or its' students. I see a great place to start cutting federal spending.

  • flaedo

PAthena you should not mention Joan in the same sentence as these stupid crossdressers. Joan of Arc was terribly interesting. At her trial she got the better of her accusers and confounded them completely. She was extraordinary. Reading about her life throws up more questions than can ever be answered.

  • Jaladhi

One has to ask why this hate towards our own military man who are protecting all of us including those delusional students at Columbia??? I am sure a similar reception awaits our army hero Maschek at other US universities!! One reason for such abhorrent behavior of the young students is brain washing done by the leftist elitist professors who always find the actions of US government immoral. Unless and until the students are exposed to all views, conservative and liberal, and then allowed to decide for themselves, not indoctrinated by the liberal professors, this situation will continue. And to think the same students are going be tomorrow's leaders of our country is just plainly horrifying!!

Although it has nothing to do with the Columbia ROTC despicable behaviour to

  • USMCSniper

From the AMerican Spectator: Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown, and Columbia — and pretty much all the rest of the artsy fartsy Ivies — tossed ROTC out not in response to the DADT law, but back in about 1969 at the height of the Vietnam antiwar protests because the faculties were pro communists. They latched on to the DADT law only as an excuse to continue their exclusion of the military after the enactment of the Solomon Amendment in 1996 threatened their federal grant money. It's never been enforced, more is the pity. Now they want to have the military inlcude "transgenders" which would include self made human freaks called shemales.

    • Amused

Another rare occaission where I find myself in full agreement with USMCSniper. This sort of thing really pisses me off , especially such treatment of a wounded vet . I was spat at on my return in Seattle at the airport , March of 1971 , and I had not been wounded . No ROTC , no Federal Funding -PERIOD .

      • USMCSniper

Where you in Vietnam? I was with Lima Co 3rd Bat 3rd Marines as a fireteam leader at Chu Lai in 65 and 66 on operations Starlite, Harvest Moon, a whole lotta airfield outer perimeter guard duty and on operation Hastings in the DMZ. Got out alive with no purple heart either.

  • Supreme_Galooty

Although I have met some exeptions – and they are sadly few – the professorial staff in the groves of academe are abject morons. I mean that most sincerely. They are very highly SCHOOLED, but clearly uneducated. I am most familiar with the Ivy League types, and they are quite literally imbeciles.

Don't get me wrong. Many of them are nice enough folks, but when it comes to intellectual honesty there's not a one of them I would trust alone in a room with a red-hot stove unless the stove were comparatively valueless.

    • Jim_C

      Uh, OK, sure.

So they can't…what? Do equations? teach someone finance? teach bio? Instruct art history? You are so wonderfully, pompously vague. What specifically is it about the tens of thousands of people in the hundreds of various fields taught in academia, that you, in your boundless wisdom and experience, find lacking?

      • Supreme_Galooty

No, they CAN'T do equations. MIT, on the other hand, (not Ivy League) actually produces real, talented scientific minds who are not generally arrogant beyond their station, unlike the precious, mince-stepping poofters who sashay about the so-called Ivy League. No they CAN'T teach ANYONE finance. All they know about finance is what they learned from their own pompous, over-schooled, under-educated Keynesian parrots. Keynes, highly regarded by fellow-travellers everywhere, was a charter member of the Fabian Society which significantly coloured his "intellectual" output. Keynes was a charlatan. "Art history?" Only an "intellectual" can use a noun to modify a noun. The rest of us plebeians must resort to "history of art." No, they CAN'T teach any of that stuff except in the most feckless manner. But in their spectacular lordliness they sure SOUND like they know what they are doing. Don't waste your money by sending your children there.

So your beef is strictly with Ivy League profs? Or is MIT just uniquely exempt from your scorn?

          • Supreme_Galooty

Most of my contact with the Intelligentsia of Academe is with professors from Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth and Harvard, with a smattering few from Brown and Cornell. While they are talented enough in a modest way, their demeanors say otherwise. In their own lights they are most thoroughly competent, enlightened beyond the Godhead, whilst my impression of them is that they are full of affectation and not much else. Strictly my opinion, my good man, but I believe that I am on to something here. I have met a few professors from Western States and while their pretentiousness is amateurish in comparison to the Ivy League, they are nonetheless smugly convinced of their ultimate superiority. They are simply wrong.

And I have no "beef" with any of them. I just don't want them within sight of my children.

  • JosephWiess

Fine, as long as ivy league schools, or any school continues to forbid ROTC, then they don't get any Federal grants, Federal money, or anything. We'll see how long this lasts.

  • tagalog

The tawdry story of the weaseling of certain colleges and their student bodies to avoid the presence of ROTC on their campuses not only establishes the fact that "the agenda is not the agenda," as the article aptly states, but also that their delusional vision of the world is so necessary to the universities and the students that they cannot stand for that vision to be offset by worldviews that are grounded in reality and an appropriate appreciation of that reality.

As the attacks of 9/11 so clearly illustrate, there are in fact people out there who are ready to murder those college students (and the rest of us) regardless of their politics, religious views, and attitudes. At the World Trade Center, I bet most of those who were murdered by Islamic extremists were highly tolerant of Muslim extremism. Didn't matter; they were Americans and were proper targets to those Muslim mad dogs.

  • Jim_C

I don't know that this is much of an issue nation-wide but certainly it sounds like these schools aren't comporting themselves very well.

Besides ROTC we have our share of reservists, guardsmen, and returning vets in our campus community and we have all sorts of resources to help them get back in the academic swing. And people just brighten up when they see people who serve.

  • BLJ

I would love to see these little ingrates say crap like that to some of our soldiers currently serving. How dare they make fun of this young man who served his country so a-holes like this can become educated derelicts.

  • Kate MCG

Columbia is not the only elite college where students harass military members.
When I was getting my LLM at Georgetown Lawin 1983, by the way whose administration was very welcoming to veterans, I was in line for coffee in the cafeteria at the law school, dressed in my US Air Force uniform since I was on active dutyin the reserves at the time. A student in a loud voice asked me whether the unform was a "Nazi" uniform and snickered. I was about to say no, it is the unifrom taht defeated the Nazis, when another Army Lt. told me to ignore him, which I did. This disgraceful attitude is everywhere on college campuses.

  • MarkRich

These punks are the types who would be in need and call for a serviceman in a heartbeat if they faced any kind of danger. They sit in their Ivory towers of "tolerance"- for anything and everything- except for traditional and or Christian and Jewish culture and mock those they arent even worthy of wearing the sandals of. –These types of people are the pampered children of 60's and 70's parents who disdained the 'system" and yet live off the vestiges of it. They hate authority and heirarchy and capitalism and order and live off the fruits of it all. Instead of living up to their convictions and really opting out of bourgeois society they are leeches sucking it dry. They deserve neither respect or value as members of a society which they have such disdain for. That servicemen has more character in his pinky than they have in their whole bodies.

Columbia conducted a student survey that concluded yesterday, and the University Senate will vote in April. The student survey and senate vote will direct Columbia's stance on ROTC. Right now, it's too early to know whether the media-quoted statements and described actions reflect the majority of Columbia or are simply the theatrics of outliers.
