Whoops I think David forgot to mention that ASI (American Student for Israel) and the local Hillel including the Rabbi and most of the UCSB Jewish faculty supported the UCSB Respect Coalition. Again why would he tell us that?

Mr. Melnick,

I attended the event, and found no hate speech. I'm a teacher, and a Christian, very familiar with Israel's history. What I heard was Muslim Student Association hecklers hollering out an occassional contradiction to Mr. Horowitz when he discussed incontrovertible facts such as the 1967 attack on Israel. Fortunately, UCSB's highly organized security dealt with each heckler swiftly, heading off the MSA's previous free speech verbal blockade.

You seem to have opposed this event in, collusion with the MSA, because you didn't like the content. Labeling speech you disagree with "hate speech" is a cowardly act. This is America; free speech is protected whether you agree with it or not. I disagree with neo-nazis, but I respect their right to free speech.

I find it shameful and embarrassing to the UCSB community that there was even a hearing on the issue of disbursing funds for this event. That anyone would presume to block the funding is an insult to the U.S. Constitution, and a blight on the civil liberties of all citizens of Santa Barbara.

What we need a hearing on is the competence of the activity board staff, who never should have entertained withholding funds. As it is, the College Republicans' free speech rights were illegally hampered by the board withholding most of the requested funds.

I suggest you reflect on your "solidarity" with the MSA's free speech suppression in the light of our sacred First Amendment.

Mr. Horowitz,
I find interesting that you neglect to mention that the coalition opposing your event included both UCSB Hillel and UCSB American Students for Israel. American Students for Israel has had a long relationship with the College Republicans, one we valued and had no wish to damage. That being said, we felt that your habit of couching anti-Muslim beliefs in the rhetoric of pro-Israel sentiment created to great a risk to the cause of Israel on campus to be ignored. Furthermore, many of us felt that to stand by in the face of vicious hate speech would be to accept complicity in it. As people of conscience (many of whom share a cultural heritage of persecution), we had no choice but to stand in solidarity with the
UCSB Muslim Community. I suspect that your decision not to mention Jewish, Pro-Israel opposition to your event is more than a mere oversight. I can't help but feel that you avoided mentioning us because our opposition exposes your rhetoric for what it really is: dishonest bigotry.
