Israel Bows to Obama’s 1967 Borders Pressure

Pages: 1 2

Media reports quote anonymous Israeli officials saying Israel has decided, after all, to negotiate a two-state arrangement with the Palestinians based on the 1967 borders. The reports have a certain shock value; reading between the lines, the shock dissipates somewhat.

AP calls it a “dramatic policy shift” and cites a report on Israel’s Channel 2 TV that said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is now “basically accepting the framework” of the 1967 lines, broached by President Obama—with much shock value—last May. AP also says an Israeli official “would not deny the TV report, while refusing to confirm the specifics. He emphasized that Israel would not withdraw from all of the West Bank.”

AP quotes the official: “We are willing in a framework of restarting the peace talks to accept a proposal that would contain elements that would be difficult for Israel and we would find very difficult to endorse.”

AP continues: “Part of the reason, he said, was that Israel is seeking to persuade the Palestinians to drop their initiative to win UN recognition of their state next month….”

As for AFP (Agence France-Presse), its report has an Israeli official saying that “Israel has been working with Washington and members of the international peace-making Quartet [the U.S., UN, EU, and Russia] to draw up a new framework that could relaunch stalled talks.”

This official, too, tells AFP that “Israel was not being asked to return to the lines that existed before the 1967 war,” and, further, that “The formulation is something like: the goal for the talks is two states for two people and [the Palestinians] recognizing Israel as a Jewish state.”

Britain’s Daily Telegraph claims it, too, has been tipped off, trumpeting that “the Israeli prime minister has bowed to U.S. pressure by agreeing for the first time that a Palestinian state should roughly follow the contours of the 1967 ceasefire lines separating the West Bank from Israel,” and saying “A government official in Jerusalem told The Daily Telegraph the offer was dependent on the Palestinians dropping their campaign for statehood at the United Nations next month and accepting Israel as a Jewish state.”

The first two reports also quote Palestinian reactions to the alleged major Israeli concession; to put it mildly, they don’t sound impressed. AP narrates that “Palestinian officials said they had not received such a proposal from Israel”—that is, to drop their UN initiative in return for Israel adopting different language on borders; and that

Palestinian officials said Monday they plan to begin mass marches against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank on Sept. 20, the eve of the UN vote.

Palestinian official Yasser Abed Rabbo said leaders hope to attract millions, and the protest will be the first of a prolonged effort.  He said the campaign would be called “Palestine 194,” since the Palestinians hope to become the 194th member of the United Nations.

And AFP quotes Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat urging Netanyahu to

“announce his position in front of the world and the international media.”

Netanyahu should announce “that the 1967 borders are the basis for negotiations and a halt to all building of settlements on Palestinian land, including east Jerusalem,” he told AFP, dismissing the reports as a PR exercise.

Time for some taqiyya for a change on Netanyahu's part. Play with them but make no commitment. Bring up irrelevant issues and make a big thing of them; drag it out for years. That's the way Obama works because he's got a Muslim mind so give them a taste of their own medicine. Drive them nuts.

    • tskal

      Hope you're right.

    • al Kidya

effemall, I like your idea. Obummer does think with his Muslim mind.
The only way to keep the fox from getting into the hen house is to outsmart him.

I only pray Netanyahu is on the same page.
If not, it would mark the beginning of the end for Israel as a Jewish state and the Jews will be annihilated, if not humiliated.

    • stern

Not necessary! According to the Daily Telegraph (http://tinyurl.com/3oy4cgp) the Palestinians have "rejected" the proposal because "…Palestinian officials suggested that he (Netanyahyu) was engaged in a ruse and would never live up to his word."

The Palestinians also challenged Netanyahu to say the same thing in "Hebrew, Arabic, English or Chinese". Um, excuse me, but who are the masters of saying one thing in English and the other in Arabic to their own people? Turnabout is NOT fair play.

But in the end, it doesn't really matter what Israel offers, Short of suicide, it will never be enough for our friends in Ramallah.

Of course, the problem is that it doesn't really matter what Israel concedes or what Israel offers. The world – and Obama – will still, and always, blame Israel.

Again Israel makes the compromises. It is time for the Janus-faced Terrorist Entity to do the same. I know that is wishful thinking. If the world had any guts (and morality), it would put SERIOUS pressure on the Palestinian Authority, but it won't. It seems that the world is getting ready for Hatefest III in New York this fall.

    • trickyblain

This DOES put enormous pressure on the PA. And they will cave under it. And no deal will go through. And Obama and Bibi know it.

  • SpiritOf1683

Muslims never compromise. They expect us to make compromises instead. They don't negotiate – they demand. To them give and take is boiled down to "You give, we take". And this has always been the case. Ansd our dumb leaders are too damned scared or boneheaded to see this.

Why should Israel bow to Obama? That's nonsense. Israel has a overwhelming majority in US congress. Likud is trying to evade responsibility for an inevitable negotiation along the 67 lines. No Israeli in their right mind wants over 2 million Arabs annexed into the Jewsih state.

    • MixMChess

"Israel has a overwhelming majority in US congress."

Right, I forgot how a handful of grassroots Israel advocates wield more power in Congress than Arab petrodollars, Oil Companies, the Saudi Royal Family and the Arab/Islamic Lobby.

"Likud is trying to evade responsibility for an inevitable negotiation along the 67 lines."

Huh? The so-called "67 Lines" have never been the starting point for negotiations. That stated, Netanyahu and countless Likud members have all stated they are willing to create a Palestinian state by dismantling some W. Bank Settlements and even exchanging Israeli land with the Palestinians.

If anyone is trying to evade negotiations its the Palestinians who continue to incite hatred of Jews and provoke conflict with Israel. Recall, it was Arafat who was given over 98% of the W. Bank in 2000 and walked away without so much as even a counter-offer!

"No Israeli in their right mind wants over 2 million Arabs annexed into the Jewsih state."

No kidding, but that doesn't mean that the so-called 67 borders are the starting basis for negotiation. That's just nonsense.

      • Snorbak

Spot on, the so called "67 lines" for the purpose of negotiations are nothing more than myth as is the right of return & "Palestinian" (revisionist) history.

      • crackerjack

If Likud is "……willing to create a Palestinian state by dismantling some W. Bank Settlements and even exchanging Israeli land with the Palestinians…..", it indirectly recognizes the '67 lines. So why the big fuss?

In order to survive politically and physically, Likud must make all decisions concerning a two state solution appear as being taken under outside pressure. Likud knows that the occupation is a political, economical and demographic desaster in the making but nobody has the balls to stand up against the religious-zionist Eretz Yisrael fraction.

Why aren't there any articles on this website about the big demonstrations taking place in israel right now.
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/aug/
    http://rt.com/news/protest-foreign-media-israel/

    • Grantman

Here's some information on the demonstrations that may answer a lot of questions: http://www.carolineglick.com/e/2011/08/the-media-

      • Smiley

The link you provided gives some opinions on why the demonstrations are taking place…but it doesn't provide anything meaningful about why the demonstrations are being subject to a virtual media blackout outside of Israel. …and in the jerusalem post as well.

With all the unrest around the middle east this year you have figured this would be big news and worthy of coverage..

        • stern

smiley, the difference is that Israel is a democracy. Unlike the people of the Arab world, who are protesting against brutal dictatorships. Israelis can simply get rid of their government in the next election. The people who are demonstrating now are using their rights to free speech and to protest to make sure their voice is heard (mainly because they're frustrated at no longer being the majority when it comes to election time). I would suggest that the reason they're being ignored by much of the world's press is because there's no chance of them being fired upon by Israeli security forces.

          • Smiley

I think your speculation on the cause of the news blackout is very weak considering once again, the profound movements in the middle east this year coupled with the pending declaration of statehood by the palestinians.

Horowitz, how come you're not commenting?? Is there we shouldn't know?

          • stern

What "news blackout"? The protests are being covered extensively in Israel, as Grantman pointed out to you. If you can't find it in the international media, poor you. I suspect you're desperately looking for yet more ammunition that you can fire at Israel and for once, the international media isn't cooperating with you. Stop looking for crimes where there are none.

The recognition of the Palestinian State by the useless nations might be a blessing
    in disguise.

So far, Israel's wars with them have been what is called "ASSYMETRICAL", in other
words, a nation against a guerrilla organization.

If recognized, then any wat would be "SYMETRICAL" and no holds barred and no
consideration for "innocent" civilians, a non-existent specimen among them, not
    even as children anyway…

And the PA can kiss then goodbye the millions Israel stupidly turns over to it from
the payroll tax charged Israeli employers of Arab workers and many, many more
goodies, such as water and electricity for Gaza, etc,.

Definitely, it may turn out to be a blessing in disguise…..

    • Eraina

I wouldn't put it past the Israelis to continue funding the very Palestinian state that seeks Israel's destruction. The Israelis have had numerous opportunities to pressure the Palestinians on a number of issues — THEY DON'T DO IT. Netanyahu is a big talker but on action, he's a wuss. The Palestinians have already taken over parts of E. Jerusalem and claimed it as their territory. The Israelis back off. Remember, it was the Israelis who handed over the Temple Mount to the Palestinians. It was the Israelis who plucked Arafat from defeat and installed him as the Pal leader. It was the Israelis who told the Pals to import school textbooks from Jordan which were inflamatory about Israel. The Israelis supply electricity to the Pals. THey could use that to pressure the Pals in all kinds of respects — THEY DON'T DO IT.

It is both telling and a poor reflection on FPM's editorial policy or monitoring capabilities that while a simple dirty word like "sh.t" or "fu.k" may bring about a warning or censorship the kind of hate speech as posted by SpiritOf….remains unchallenged. That this blog presents itself as a reasoned source of opinion favorable to the right political force in America is reason enough to forcibly censor hate speech, while encouraging open debate.FPM risks its integrity and usefulness by its failure to reasonably monitor and moderate hate content/speech.
Furthermore, other ,regular and reasoned posters are complicit in their shameful silence when they allow such hatefulness to go unchallenged on this forum in the name of antisemitism and pro Israeli opinion.muchiboy

      • MixMChess

"If your observations are correct, then how come the Palestinians are still stateless?"

Palestinians don't want a state. Why didn't they accept a state in 1967, 1973, 1988, 1993, 2000, 2005 or 2006 during direct peace talks? Why did they refuse to ever negotiate or provide counter-offers? Don't bother answering, I know your weak mind can't process it.

"How come much of their land not ethnically cleansed in '48 is still occupied?"

Israel never ethnically cleansed the Palestinians in 1948. Even anti-Israel historians have conceded this point. Even now, Israel completely WITHDREW from Gaza and the so-called settlements exist on LESS THAN 2% of the W. Bank, and over 85% of the settlements are municipalities of Israeli towns and nowhere adjacent to any Palestinian towns or villages. Do you even know how to read a map?

"If you want all the land, just take it.Just allow the Palestinians to live in Israel as second class citizens. It beats the miserable, homeless occupied existence they have lived since occupation and the Nakba."

Talk about whining. Arabs in Israel are treated as equal citizens and guaranteed the same equal rights as Jews and any other person regardless of background. Palestinians have only lived a miserable existence because they chose to rather than negotiating peace with Israel. Why are you against peace? Why do you constantly tout the "nakba" myth in order to incite hatred of Jews? Time to get back to your cross burning ceremony you douche.

The return to the 1967 armistice lines is suicidal. Althought it has been quoted many times it is worthy of repeating "Appeasement is feeding the crocodile in hopes of being eaten last". We have seen the results of the withdrawl from Gaza and the re-establishment of the 67 lines will have the same effect or worse.

  • mrbean

Israel and those who attack it are not moral equals. Israel is, like the United States, a "mixed economy," which retains a significant respect for individual rights. Its citizens, whatever their race or religion including Arab Muslims, enjoy many freedoms, including freedom of thought and speech, and the right to own property. The purpose of Israel's military is only self-defense: to protect its citizens from aggressors. Consequently, Israel has a moral right to exist. Those attacking Israel, by contrast, are proxy terrorist organizations, dictatorships and Islamic theocracies, which deliberately violate the rights of their own subjects. Even if these organizations and regimes had never initiated force directly against Israel and only supported or funded those who do, they still would have no moral right to exist.

  • Peter Horowitz

Unless I missed something in the previous comments, no one has pointed out that, at least as reported, Israel is still sticking to her demand that she be recognized by the so-called Palestinians (of course the Jews are the only true Palestinians) as a Jewish state. Quite simply, this is NOT going to happen unless Abbas wishes to be gunned down by the first islamonut that gets the opportunity. Recognizing land that was ever part of the caliphate as now belonging to someone else (especially the Jews) violates the most basic tenets of their beliefs. Just ask Sadat!

  • grog

    • Jim_C

      Exactly.

Any FPM commentors will note I thought that the kerfuffle between Bibi and Obama was more staged than anything. The idea being: play to your bases for show, now, and then put Israel in as politically unassailable a position as possible.

From such a position, if they are then physically "assailed," they have political leverage (on top of general moral leverage) to retaliate. It creates a clarity–not for those of us who already support Israel–but for all those for whom it is merely fashionable not to.

  • muchiboy

"Palestinians to drop their initiative to win UN recognition of their state next month….”

Just what would be the objection of the UN recognizing a Palestinian state?muchiboy

    • MixMChess

Because it allows the Palestinians to AGAIN bypass direct peace negotiations with Israel.

The UDI would constitute a violation of every agreement signed between the Israeli’s and Palestinians, would contravene the UN’s own Security Council Resolutions 242, 338 and 1850 – all stipulating a mutually negotiated solution while rejecting unilateralism – and would destroy the frameworks for Middle East peace which have been created over the past few decades.

The declaration would intensity the conflict and would reward the Palestinians for their intransigence in refusing to make any concessions. They would illegally declare their state along the 67 borders and murder the Jews in the "settlements" that exist on less than 2% of the W. Bank. This would also give implicit legitimacy to Hamas, a terrorist organization bent on the genocide of Jews.

      Seriously get a clue moron.

  • SpiritOf1683

Hmm. I don't see anyone campaigning for the US to return to its 1847 borders, or for Germany and Italy to be reinstated to their 1937 borders.

I posted this comment on the article referred to in the Guardian yesterday. I received an e-mail notification that someone had responded to my comment – telling me I needed to take my pills. When I went to the Guardian article, my comment had been removed. For some media, TRUTH is NOT allowed.

In 2008, two polls found the vast majority of Arabs support terror attacks against Jews.A Palestinian Authority poll showed that 84 percent of Palestinian Authority Arab Muslims approved of the massacre at Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva in Jerusalem, where eight Jewish students were murdered and ten wounded.

Palestinian Authority Muslims are the most genocidal society to have ever lived on this earth. The peace process are code words for Israel's destruction.

With the help of Arab Muslim countries' armies, Arab Muslims fully intend a Second Holocaust of Jews. Please stop the PLANNED Second Holocaust.!No Jewish land to barbaric enemies bent on Jewish genocide!

or broom closets (they are narrow also), Bibi says Jersualem is not negotiable
so there must be bumps in the old new borders and the Islamists will claim that
the Israeli's are narrow minded, but what they hey it seems to be the new fad…..
Obamas head coming to a point, it's verry narrow…………………….

Netanyahu may offer the 1967 borders, but he will never have a peace partner with any Arab. I don't believe any peace initiative with Palestinians will be successful. Remember to "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition."

  • Wesley69

Obama must have blackmailed Israel into doing this by promising to abstain when the vote for Palestinian statehood came up in the UN's Security Council, if Netanyahu did not agree.

  • Brujo Blanco

If the Israelis give up one inch of real estate they are making a mistake. The Palestinians want all of Israel and they want the Jews dead. Whatever agreement they make they will go for it all. I stand with Israel.

  • Freedom John

NO, NO, NO. Bad, terrible, stupid idea. The Palestinians will not recognize Israel, EVER. Obama is a demonic socerer. This will not stand because right minds will prevail or else the Palestinian trash in Sameria and Judah will be lobbing rockets into what's left of Israel. These people are pure evil and that's their most redeeming quality!

  • muchiboy

    "…….what's left of Israel."

What about what's left of Palestine? It says so much about the Zionists,Diaspora, religious right and supporters that they consider the Palestinian people, the real victims of this conflict,as a mere nuisance or after thought.Shameful. muchiboy

    • MixMChess

What is really shameful is supporting the xenophobic and murderous Palestinians. I wonder how people like muchiboy can sleep at night knowingly supporting genocide and excusing racism.

what an Isreali hit piece!!! What Isreal needs to do is act as if they are human and join the human race. Although Isreaalis think they are the chosen people I have, as a transformed American, now see Isreal as the world bully and intransigent warmonger. Oh my god their feet are finally being held to the fire for acting to give some land back to the people they stole the entire region from. Please. God bless Obama in his dealings with
bibi and his arrogant actions and hallow lies. Isreal will never exist long term with the voices i read hear determining policy. Isreal anger will only grow now the world has woken up to their posionous diplomacy and unpeaceful Zionist expansionist policies.

    • MixMChess

Looks like we have another lying hatemonger…

"What Isreal needs to do is act as if they are human and join the human race. Although Isreaalis think they are the chosen people I have, as a transformed American, now see Isreal as the world bully and intransigent warmonger."

Chosen people simple means that Jews are chosen to follow gods laws, nice try though. Israel has tried to make peace with the Palestinians in 1948, 1968, 1973, 1979, 1988, 1993, 2000, 2005, 2006 just to name a few. Each time the Palestinians refuse and opt for war and violence instead. So who are the real warmongers again?

"Isreal anger will only grow now the world has woken up to their posionous diplomacy and unpeaceful Zionist expansionist policies."

How is Israel expansionist when it has been actively shrinking its borders? Israel completely abandoned Sinai, S. Lebanon, Gaza, and over 98% of the W. Bank. This despite the fact that International Law states Israel could legally retain all of those territories.

correct, this is what Ehud Barak said on Greta Van Susteren today (hard to understand as his English is so very poor and his ability to express himself so incoherent in any language, but that was the upshot).

  • SHmuelHaLevi

I continue to read real information not "unidentified source" Barak-Peres hit jobs.
An hour ago. The Minister of the Interior signed the final approval for the expansion of Har Homa's, a suburb of Jerusalem, 900 new homes and land.
And no word about any 67 lines agreement.
Mr. Feiglin is no particular friend of Mr. Netanyahu and would hit hard if the Barak release of information of an agreement such as that.
In todays Bulletin I find no mention of that.
    More to be disclosed…

  • Vermont Yid

This is beyond disgusting – it's tragic. The Israeli people should be rioting in the streets demanding Netanyahu's head and the heads of the MK's on spikes.

All Jews who have considered a trip to Israel should book their flights as soon as possible, before the state of Israel ceases to exist.

Oh yes, phuck Barak bin Obama!

If it is ever reached, the current and any other artificial “peace agreement” will be illegitimate before it is ever signed because (1) all people living in Palestine regardless of religion, race, origin, etc. (hereinafter “All People of Palestine”) were never given a choice on how they want their land to be governed, and (2) all contracts signed under duress are null and void.

The biggest problem in Palestine is that the Zionist regime never offered a choice to All People of Palestine on how they want to govern their land because the Zionist regime cannot exist as a democratic entity. If there was ever any democratic process in Palestine, Zionists would have been outvoted and the Zionist regime would have never existed. That is why the Zionist regime is the occupier because it does not offer choice (i.e. democracy), but instead imposes its regime (i.e. occupies). Imagine if Russians would simply occupy a town in the U.S. where they are in significant numbers and attempt to create a Russian state there without giving the rest of the Americans living there a choice. Imagine then if they would try to institute a “peace agreement” that would attempt to legitimize their occupation. The “peace agreement” would logically and legally be illegitimate because the Americans were not given a choice.

Under all countries’ laws, any contract is null and void if it is signed under duress. The current Palestine “peace agreement” process reminds me of The Godfather movie where the mafia boss (i.e. the Zionist regime) made a guy “an offer he could not refuse” by placing a gun (i.e. Zionist conventional and nuclear arsenal) to his head and making him sign the contract. Like the mafia boss’ offer, any “peace agreement” other than the choice for All People of Palestine is a crime, and the contract is legally null and void.

The bottom line is that All People of Palestine never wanted to divide their land into artificial two states the way the occupation and this “peace agreement” attempt to divide it. From the beginning of the Zionist regime to its unavoidable end, All People of Palestine and the region never wanted the Zionist regime and they do not want it even more after all the atrocities the Zionist regime committed. I just cannot believe how the Zionist regime can be so ignorant to think that this or any other “peace agreement” that does not allow people to choose how they want to be governed will last and ensure its people’s survival. The Zionist regime fails to realize that no matter if it succeeds in muscling this “peace agreement” by unspeakable historic coercion tens of millions of moral people around the world will oppose it until it is corrected, and until justice and free choice prevail. Also, ever increasing number of Jewish people are realizing that Zionism is becoming a destructive force for them and are leading the global resistance to it.

The main Zionist claim is that they have a supreme right to some of Palestinian territory because they lived there thousands of years ago. Let’s examine the core and real nature of this claim.

Firstly, this claim is mistaken and selfish in its core concept because Zionists fail to recognize that history is a continuum and that there were other people living in majority in Palestine before the Jews and also after the Jews. Zionists simply cut history at a convenient point for them and claim ancestral ties to the land as of that convenient point.

Secondly, whatever the claim, it is beyond absurd to try to shape modern world based on thousands of years old maps. Imagine if the rest of the world would be reshaped by who was on the land thousands of years ago. It would cause horrific wars, countless refugees, and unimaginable human suffering, exactly what is happening in Palestine.

Thirdly and most disturbing, Zionist goal was to establish a Jewish state wherever possible. Palestine may have been a preference, but Palestine was not the only location that Zionists planned as their state in modern times. Another location was Argentina where Jews have been migrating for hundreds of years for the purpose of establishing a state. Also, locations in Europe were on the list and that’s why the Catholic Church was killing/expelling Jews since Roman times (read the history of the Holly Inquisition). Whatever the location, Zionist plan was to simply occupy the people living on the land even if that would mean imposing a regime worst than Nazi Germany’s from which they escaped. And Zionists would just use a different ideological coloring than the one used in Palestine in the attempt to rationalize the occupation.

In conclusion, the main claim on which the Zionist regime is built in Palestine is erroneous, selfish, and a lie. I am categorically against generalizing, and recognize that many Jews are against the crimes the Zionist regime is committing and that many Jews are leading the global resistance to it. They should be proud

Why would Zionists want to discuss any peace agreement with the Palestinians when they have overwhelming military supremacy, seemingly ultimate power, and apparently bright future? Because the future is completely opposite and Zionists know it.

    1. All military powers in history with no exception ultimately came crashing down. Someone stronger always comes, and it does not take a rocket scientist to see (just look around you) this coming and not ending well for the current military power in Palestine. Forward-seeing Jewish people under the Zionist regime already started packing up and leaving for Australia, South America, and the U.S. before this occurs.

    2. It is obvious that the Zionist regime survives mainly because of its external allies who so far provided it with money, weapons, political support, access to markets, etc. After countless U.N. human rights violations, killing of its allies’ citizens (search on youtube for American “Rachel Corrie” video of Zionist bulldozer crushing her to death), forging of its allies’ passports in acts of murder, etc. its former allies are increasingly turning against the Zionist regime. Who would want to be remembered in history as an accomplice in international murders and especially of their own citizens.

    3. Not only that the list of remaining supporters is growing thinner, but an international coalition is formed and growing larger of countries that are cutting all economic and diplomatic relations with the Zionist regime.

    4. No country ever survived a complete isolation from its neighbors. No person of the area currently under Zionist occupation can obtain any type of visa from any of the surrounding countries for any reason – a complete land lock.

    5. Well attended speeches take place almost weekly at colleges and universities across the U.S. and the world condemning the Zionist regime, their remaining supporters, and companies that do any business there. These speeches are often lead by moral Jewish people, church leaders, business people, etc., in addition to traditional peace activists.

    6. The West where most of the traditional supporters of the Zionist regime are located is loosing global influence. China, the Middle East, South East Asia, Russia, South America, etc. are emerging as new pockets of economic and political power where the Zionist regime has angered most of the population.

    7. Not only that the West is declining, but Zionists are loosing political control in the declining West. Diversity is bringing minority groups into politics, groups that are actively opposing the Zionist regime.

In conclusion, the Zionist regime is negotiating now because its future is changing for much worse. It knows that it temporarily exists now only through the force of its arms and this will be short-lived. It knows that it is at its peak and a downturn has come. It is a mistake to negotiate with the Zionist regime at the present time. But, if you have to negotiate, do not accept anything less than a single region in question (single state) where all who live there are equal. Any other “solution” would just reward the Zionist regime at the time of its demise. If the Zionist regime wants true piece, let’s not make it dependent on Zionist political and land acquisition goals, but on democratic vote for all who live there and making everyone equal (something we Americans cherish so passionately)
