A Jewish Student at Yale Stands Up

Editor’s note: Below is an article reprinted from the YaleDailyNews.com. It is written by Nathaniel Zelinsky, a sophomore in Davenport College.

Responding to the Wall of Lies

On Wednesday, the David Horowitz Center published a full-page advertisement in the Yale Daily News and other college newspapers in order to combat Israel Apartheid Week. The splashy ad was entitled “Wall of Lies,” and detailed falsifications on the part of the anti-Israel movement. In response, on the same day, the Slifka Center at Yale printed their own page, billed as a set of Jewish “truths.” In doing so, the Slifka administration implied that they uniquely speak for all supporters of the state of Israel on campus. While I deeply respect Rabbi Ponet and the Student Board of Slifka, they have mischaracterized my values and the ideals of many on this campus.

The authors of the Slifka advertisement wrote that supporters of Israel merely believe in the right of the State to exist. They then went on to talk about interfaith dialogue and the need for tolerance across communities. While these goals are admirable, they fail to address the real issue at play: During Israel Apartheid Week (and year round), many around the United States (and here at Yale) have attacked the legitimacy of the Jewish State through incorrect, misleading and deceptive arguments.

On Thursday, a student group brought Mazin Qumsiye, a self-proclaimed Palestinian activist, to campus in order to set the record straight on Israel. Mr. Qumsiye, a former professor at Yale, has publically claimed that a Zionist cabal dictates U.S. foreign policy and pushes for the formation of an American police state.

In the light of these farfetched claims and in the absence of constructive dialogue, here is what I know to be true:

Israel’s right to exist stems from three unique sources: Jews have documented historical ties to the land of Israel; Jews have been uniquely persecuted throughout history — during the Holocaust, nations watched the genocide of six million, and the state of Israel exists (in part) to be a defended home for Jewish people around the world; and a UN mandate in 1948 (thought necessary by some, though not me) provided for the establishment of Israel recognizing the above two facts.

The so-called international community subjects Israel to a hypocritical double standard. We expect no other nation to endure terrorist attacks on its civilian population and not respond with force. While, regrettably, civilians always die in war, the State of Israel has never directly targeted innocents — a stark contrast to the PLO, Hamas and other Arab nationalist originations.

Israel is not an apartheid state. It provides voting and civil rights for its minority Arab population. Arab representatives serve in the Israeli Parliament, and the Supreme Court of Israel routinely hears (and supports) Arab cases of discrimination.

Israel is a liberal democracy, the only one of its kind in the Middle East. It allows gays to serve openly in the military, and prosecutes elected officials who violate its laws. Only a few days ago, a former Israeli president was convicted on two rape charges. Imagine Syria, Iran or Libya holding its leaders to a similar account.

Israel is a center of brimming commerce and activity that has positively influenced the world through its inventions and humanitarian efforts. During the disaster in Haiti, Israeli rescue teams were some of the first on the scene; in a sensational story, they saved a women trapped for six days in the rubble. Israeli pharmaceutical and agricultural technologies have created a better standard of living for people all around the globe. These creative businesses are often started by and employ Israeli-Arabs; they have far more hope of a better life in Israel than in any neighboring country.

This short column is not meant to be a definitive defense of Israel. Instead, I hope to restart the dialogue on campus that has been lost in conversation the past few days. Israel is not perfect; it makes mistake too. But the Slifka Center did a disservice to the cause of the State of Israel by setting the bar for “truths” so low.

It is incontrovertible that Jews are native to Palestine and Arabs are Johnny-come-lately interlopers. And nasty, vicious little bellicose cretins at that. Consequently the Supreme Galooty agrees with Mr. Zelinsky that the so-called "U.N." had no business, no right, no power, nothing but the most pretentious delusions of worth to resolve Palestine to be a Jewish birthright.

Araby, once a great shining light of creativity, love of God and God's Nature, has been set upon by the most villanous vagabonds, and dragged forlornly into the miasma of Islam. One can only hope they protect their youth from evil, protect their daughters from debauchery and mutilation, protect their very souls from the fires of Mohamaden Hell, and once again join the honest, hardworking peoples of this world.

    • Kevin Stroup

Does this mean that American Indians have the right to take back all of their lands and kick those of us who are European in ancestry out?

      • Supreme_Galooty

      • flaedo

There were Europeans living in America 10,000 years ago. Be careful what you say.

    • flaedo

Around 45 per cent of the muslims are inbred, possibly more. Their gene pool is irreparably damaged. There is no hope that these muslims can be reformed – NO HOPE

  • Fred Dawes

Islam is 1400 years old the Jews have a history in that part of the world that is 4000 years old the muslims murdered jews in all areas and killed millions of christ followers from 650AD To 1480AD Before being stopped and shoved back to the so called holly land.

The jews have a right to Israel end of story!

  • jacob

What people fail to understand once and for all is the true nature of the conflict.

Muslims hold that anywhere they ever set foot is theirs.
Which is why SPAIN, (EL ANDALUSTO THEM) to them is theirs, as it was conquered
at one time by the Moors, no matter that the last of their kingdoms was retaken by
the Catholic Kings in late 1400's.

Therefore, same as the Mediterranean Sea was to ancient ROME their MARE NOSTRUM, and there was no room in it but for Roman ships, the Middle East in
general and ancient JUDEA (later PALESTINE) in particular, is theirs because
Arabs once conquered it and there is no room in the Middle East for anything
but Muslims, just as simple as that…

Of course, none of them will admit to it and will mask it with their sorrow for
the plight of the poor "Palestinians" a word which happens to have been a
creation of the USSR and which have as much right to it than I to the moon..

Of course, if Judeophobia makes people swallow such lies, is their privilege

    • Fred Dawes

I understand what the real muslims want and how the muslims are using others to take down both the USA And lsrael the fact is massive population will in time take down Israel and the USA.
Here is what is happening, today the jews ARE ALLOWING mass numbers of muslims inside Israel, in fact within 20 years the muslims will out-number the jews, here inside the USA Within 20 years or before the people of the third world will out number the whites and the black Americans.
Within 10 years well over 40 million muslims will be inside the USA That means "here", that means Both counties will disappear within 50 years as nation states, IE, Population can be used as a weapon and can be called a real WMD.

      • aspacia

Muslims are still massacring Christians and Jews. Why not neutron bomb the Middle-East? Those who oppose Sharia are quiet, and those who do vocally oppose it are slaughtered.

      • aspacia

Right, and I am the Tooth Fairy. Do you have any valid statistics? No. If your claim was valid, Israel would allow the Arab refugees to return.

        • Yephora

Fred is correct. It's simple demographics. Israel's, like the United States' liberal immigration policies are, frankly, suicidal. Caucasian birth rate is a fraction of Muslims who breed like jackrabbits. Being overwhelmed is just a matter of time.

      • opinionated

Maybe if Americans stopped aborting their children, we could stop the Muslim demographic time bomb!

  • tkellybal

The hatred of Jews is a world-wide disgrace. I will never fully understand it.

    • wdwrkr

      "…fully understand…"?

I don't even partially understand it!

    • aspacia

I never have and never will.

  • Amused

Hatred of Jews is a disease of the soul, therefore there is no logic in it . It cannot be reasoned with , nor can any rational argument take place with those who are haters , and that is because hatred is in itself irrational . KUDOS to this student who realizes that "inter-faith dialogues " are nothing more than a SHAM . For how can there be any dialogue between faiths ,with one of which ,seeks the utter subjugation of all others ?

  • guest

I guess if we apply this reasoning and morality to North America, a) the United States is illegitimate (a North American version of Palestine?) and b) all you Europeans will pack up and head home. Right? Or are historic claims to territory only for other people?

    • Yephora

There is no such country as Palestine. The comparison with the United States doesn't make sense.

      • guest

It does, you just don't get it. My point is that both regions have groups claiming right to possession based on history. If anything the indian claim to the Americas is stronger, as their dispossession if fairly recent and no one disputes they were here first. If Israel belongs to the Jews then why don't the Americas belong to the natives? If it is wrong for Palestinians through force or other means to establish their own state on land that belongs to the Jews, then why isn't it also wrong for the Europeans to establish a state on land that belongs to others? Why isn't the US similar to the would be state of Palestine? It seems only rationale that any real Zionist would fully support the call for Europeans to leave North America to its rightful owners.

        Get it now?

        • Indioviejo

Get this. Population moves towards better pastures just like any other animal. People left Africa looking for a better life. The Celts moved the Pict's and the Anglos and Saxons moved them. It is a constant in human development and you own what you can defend. Get over it and man up, the Mexicans are here and WE CAN'T DO SQUAT. It hurts, but that's how it its. If we study a little history we may discover why stuff happens. Si o No?

        • ziontruth

"It seems only rationale that any real Zionist would fully support the call for Europeans to leave North America to its rightful owners."

You may have a penchant for philosophy and its absolute requirement for logical consistency, but real Zionists like me have an element of pragmatism and realize it will not do to poke our noses into other people's (or nations') affairs. Apropos, a little reciprocity would be appreciated on that department. Tell me why every nose-picking politico on the other side of the world thinks he has the right to dictate to the Jewish nation on its own land.

          • guest

Get the Israeli lobby to pack up and leave DC and then we can talk about reciprocity. Return the $3 billion we give Israel every year in aid and we can talk about reciprocity.

          • ziontruth

"Get the Israeli lobby to pack up and leave DC…"

Get the Arab lobby to do that first.

As for paying our debts, you yours to China first.

        • Yephora

Repeating for those bleating: There is no such country as Palestine.

Furthermore, the United States of America is not a "region" but a legitimate, legally established and universally recognized country. There is no equivalence regardless of how desperate you are to construct one.

Your beloved 'Palestinians' are simply unwanted Arabs. Nothing more.

Besides the Jews were there first.

Immediately preceding them were the Canaanites.

          Who were not Arabs.

But I know I'm wasting my time. So,

          SHALOM and buh-bye!

          • guest

"Furthermore, the United States of America is not a "region" but a legitimate, legally established and universally recognized country. There is no equivalence regardless of how desperate you are to construct one. "

And soon Palestine will be too!

          • MixMChess

Israel has been trying to create a Palestinian state since at least 1993, but they keep rejecting statehood. See 2000, 2005, 2006, 2008…

  • http://vnnforum.com DeShawn

Satanic zionist jews stole the land from Palestinians, and now they commit genocide against them. The jews are the REAL terrorists, and everyone knows it.

    • Amused

That's a pretty good "tale " DeShawn , especially since there was no entity called "palestinian " until the late 60's .In Fact , after WW1 when the Ottoman Turks were driven out of the M.E. there was no Jordan , Iraq ,Saudi Arabia , Lebanon nor Israel . By UN Mandate was Israel formed , ironically to give a homeland to the people who ORIGINALLY possesed it . Of 500,000 square miles of land 99% was given to arabs then even that 1% was cut in half to become Isael .

      • http://vnnforum.com DeShawn

Wrong. So-called jews are really Khazars, not the original inhabitants of the land. They are imposters, and the real Isrealites of the bible are Palestinian Arabs who converted to Islam and Christianity. The jews killed and kicked out the Palestinians of their land with Isreal was formed. Now that is a FACT, and you can deny it all you want, but it's still true.

        • MixMChess

DeShawn, you're an idiot. The old Khazar myth was debunked years ago. A 2005 genetic study showed that Ashkenazi Jews are more closely related to other Jewish and Middle Eastern groups than to Europeans. The study showed that Ashkenazi Jews "clustered more closely with Middle Eastern and Sephardic Jews, a finding the researchers say is inconsistent with the Khazar hypothesis" and concluded "that all three Jewish groups—Middle Eastern, Sephardic, and Ashkenazi—share genomewide genetic markers that distinguish them from other worldwide populations"

          • Indioviejo

Yes DeShawn, you are an idiot.

          • Supreme_Galooty

Old Indian, I think you are being too harsh. The fellow is merely misinformed. As a certain radio personality would put it, "He is a glittering jewel of colossal ignorance."

        • ziontruth

"the real Isrealites of the bible are Palestinian Arabs" (emphases mine)

I could do with more anti-Zionist posters like you–you do my work for me.

        • guest

Why do you call it a fact? Is it because you feel it is a fact? Where is you learning the other side of the argument and considering it? Come on, aren't you being led by your hatred first and then finding or making up what you call "facts" that give your argument an appearance of truth? He who speaks the truth produces honest evidence.

    • MixMChess

How are Zionists committing genocide when the Palestinian population in Gaza and the W. Bank has increased exponentially under Israeli influence (over 80% from 1993-2004 alone)?

    • http://vnnforum.com DeShawn
      • MixMChess

Yep, a link to David Duke. Nice try, go back to stormfront.

    • Larry

When was the last time the "Jewish Terrorists" blew up a bus, with women and children in it, slit the throat of a 3 month old baby, on a daily basis shoot rockets into The West Bank and Gaza. I could go but I think your to stupid to get my point.

  • Jake

Why bring the Holocaust once again? The Holocaust itself is not (and should not be) the reason why Israel became a Jewish country.

Almost 1.000.000 Jews were living in the Middle East and were persecuted and discriminated by Arabs.
The Middle Eastern Jews were always the majority of "Palestine's" population (facts confirmed by Marx, Reeland, Muqaddasi, Ibn Khaldun among others).

Why do we still have to bring the Holocaust over and over again, as if it were the reason for everything, while Middle Eastern Jews are not compensated and can't even see their drama acknowledged?

Why don't you guys write more about the Mufti of Jerusalem? Or about the Farhud in Iraq? Or about Nasser's regime? Or how the few remaining Yemeni Jews are still treated like animals?

  • Amused

and finally , in their own words-

"The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian
state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of
Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference
between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for
political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of
a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit
the existence of a distinct 'Palestinian people' to oppose Zionism…
For tactical reasons, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined
borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa. While as a Palestinian,
I can undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem.
However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of Palestine, we will
not wait even a minute to unite Palestine and Jordan." – PLO executive
committee member Zahir Muhsein, March 31, 1977, interview with the Dutch
    newspaper Trouw.

  • Amused

So DeShawn , "everyone knows it " ? Yea everyone who is IGNORANT of the facts , and IGNORANT of history . Ooops , that includes you ,don't it ?

    • USMCSniper

Oncwe again Amused prattles on incoherently. If the so-called "Palestinians" had any rights to live somewhere in the Middle East, the Muslim Arab states bordering Israel would have welcomed them during the times of their alleged hardship and displacement. Instead, Muslim Arab states keep them in the modern equivalent of concentration camps, extort the UN for funding to support them that mostly comes from the USA and almost never comes from oil-rich Muslim countries, and generally deny that they have rights to any sort of entitlement. They are kept in a state of poverty because having them poor yields political advantages: poverty elicits sympathetic responses from Americans, and poverty makes them easy to control and indoctrinate in the ideology of jihad and martyrdom. At any rate, since there is no such thing as "a Palestinian people", they have no such thing as "a right of return".

      • Sylvie7

.I have always admired people who have the skill to be snipers. But your reading of Amused's comments is strange. He isn't incoherent. You and he pretty much agree. Clearly, you eyesight is excellent, why has it let you down reading his posts.

  • Amused

Yea , I guess that was a little over your head USMCSniper . I'll try and dumb-it-down for ya next time . Hint -try reading my last post which was a quote from a P.L.O. Executive . And if you still dont get it after 2 or 3x's , try having someone reead it to ya .

  • Amused

naaaa, global warming ain't got nothing on islam .

  • michiganruth

Islam began around 700AD. how has it enhanced the world? what great inventions have Muslims given us…what further understanding of science, what additions to literature?(notice I don't say "Arab" since there was a flourishing Arab culture before Mohamed came along and screwed it up).

Jews on the other hand, have managed to do quite well. for that, we are hated and murdered, and nobody much cares. (Obama was furious that Jews were daring to build apartments in Jerusalem, but he wasn't so upset when Jewish children were slaughtered, or when a bus blew up, or about the rockets now raining on Sderot).

make no mistake about it, the so-called Palestinians do NOT want peace. they want ALL the land and NO Jews. and these are the people Obama thinks Bibi should negotiate with. feh!

  • Amused

DeShawn , there are "key words " that Jew-Haters use in all of their rants , they are common in the lexicon of neo-nazis and muslims who attempt to legitimize their hatred . Among the most common are "zionist " , " Nakba " ,references to the "Elders of Zion " ,and the Khazar myth . These are embraced by the willfully ignorant , and those so blinded by their hatred that they are oblivious to history , facts , and the truth .
Good luck Deshawn , dont go hurting yourself .

  • Yetwave

It's surprising that DeShawn the fabulist did not quote from the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion".

    • Sylvie7

DeShawn probably doesn't know what that famous product of the Russian Imperial Secret Police is all about. He is simply parroting the propaganda to which the media has subjected the entire, consistently receptive, western world. Sometimes the "think in sync" media is subtle, sometimes not. AOL for example regularly shows pictures of Israeli soldiers, armed, and carrying out their duty to protect other Israelis, next to an Arab who is just "going about" his/her daily life. Collectively, these photos portray Israelis as aggressive and Arabs as downtrodden. If they are downtrodden, everyone can thank their "leaders." They voted Hamas into power. Why is there supposed to be abject poverty in an area which is constantly receiving handouts from the West? Look for the answer in the pockets of their leadership.

  • Brian

I applaud everyone who stands up to refute the lies of today’s Nazis. Truly our immigration policies are suicidal. Historical and political arguments in favor or Jewish sovereignty in the land of Israel are useful, at least to educate the general public. But, Jews need to realize that their best claim to the land of Israel is by Divine Right. Without that belief, how can Jews prevail against their existential enemies?

  • Amused

Ironically the O.I.C. just shelved a palestinian request for 150 million , saying it would be taken up at the next O.I.C. conference ……..in 2013 . Hold your breath palestinians until your muslim brothers give you some cash .
