Frontpage Interview’s guest today is Jack Cashill, a Kansas City-based writer and producer who serves as executive editor of Ingram’s, a regional business magazine. He is the author of the just released, Deconstructing Obama: The Life, Loves, and Letters of America’s First Postmodern President, his eighth book and his second on the subject of literary fraud.  He has a Ph.D. in American Studies from Purdue.

FP: Jack Cashill, welcome to Frontpage Interview.

Let’s begin with how you came to believe that Obama was not the principal author of his acclaimed memoir “Dreams from My Father”.

Cashill: Thanks Jamie.

I first picked up the book in July 2008.  Early on in the first read, the quality of the writing caught my attention.  Although the book lacks discipline, long stretches of Dreams are very well written. In my twenty-five year career in advertising and publishing, I have reviewed the portfolios of at least a thousand professional writers.  Not a half-dozen among them wrote as well as the author of the book’s best passages.  When I looked into Obama’s other efforts in print, I saw that nothing he wrote was nearly this good.  What surprised me was that no one was even suspicious of Obama’s ability.

FP: Ok, so tell us why it matters if Obama wasn’t the real author.

Cashill: The literary gatekeepers had already anointed Obama a genius on the basis of Dreams, the sacred text in the cult of Obama. The Obama campaign machine, Organizing for America, encouraged its minions to “get out the vote and keep talking to others about the genius of Barack Obama.” This, I sensed from the beginning, was a myth that one challenged at his own peril.

FP: You ultimately came to the belief that Bill Ayers was the craftsman behind Dreams from My Father.  How did you come to make this judgment?

Cashill: Entirely by accident. About six weeks after reading Dreams, I ordered a copy of Ayers’s 2001 memoir Fugitive Days and started reading. The stylistic parallels were stunning. At this point, I had my first Eureka moment, albeit a dumb one—Gosh, I thought, they both live in Chicago.  They must have shared the same ghostwriter!   I had not known that Ayers was a skilled writer and editor.  As a case in point, Hyde Park PLO booster and Obama pal, Rashid Khalidi, credits Ayers in the first sentence of his acknowledgment section of his book, Resurrecting Empire.

FP: In the fall of 2008, what would have happened to the Obama campaign if your thesis had been accepted?

Cashill: Obama biographer David Remnick got this much right.  Said he, “This was a charge that if ever proved true, or believed to be true among enough voters, could have been the end of the candidacy.”

FP: How did the media respond?

Cashill: With a shrug.  This did not surprise me.  Real knowledge might just have undermined their commitment to a philosophy so evasive — “Yes, we can?” — they themselves would be at a loss to describe it.  That much I got.  What I did not get was why the “respectable” conservative media were mimicking the turtle-like defenses of their mainstream peers.  I was not asking them to buy my thesis sight unseen but to kick the tires and take it for a test drive.

FP: How confident were you that you were right?

Cashill: Four weeks before the election I was confident enough in my thesis to submit it to any test.  If proved right, it would have undermined the foundational myth of Obama as genius, confirmed his intimate relationship with an unrepentant terrorist and, perhaps most damningly, established this still untested candidate as a liar of consequence.  In short, it could have turned the election.

    This story won't get out or at least not very far, I'm sorry to say. In my view, the Birthers are an Axelrod creation. Of course the President was born in the US. However, his birth records and other documentation have been withheld not because of the red flags that come up when viewing the President's radical associations and connections but because now anyone who questions Obama's background or character to any degree, no matter the weight of the evidence, will be categorized as tinfoil hat-wearing conspiracy buff and dismissed from consideration. Besides, word getting out to the general public heavily relies upon mainstream media actually doing its job, and I simply cannot envision that happening. Pravda in the now-defunct Soviet Union was never so much in the tank for Brezhnev as the American press has been for Obama.

    Every step of Obama's ascendancy to the White House has been marked by lies, subterfuge, and outright criminality: the disqualification of all of Obama's opponents to the Illinois state senate; the inexplicable release of Jack and Jeri Ryan's sealed divorce records; the sudden silence of Tony Rezco, who had (until Obama assumed office) begun to sing while in federal custody; the surprise decision of Mayor Daley (!) not to seek another term, allowing Rahm Emanuel to almost effortlessly win the office for himself, and so on. As a country, we haven't seen anything like this since Warren Harding's Ohio Gang.

    In fairness to Harding, the crooks surrounding him were just that: corrupt machine politicians. What we are facing now is something far worse: a cadre of hardcore, old-school Marxists, genuine true believers with an agenda and the means and power to achieve it.

    We live in interesting times.

      Yes, the pejorative term "birther" was invented by those who want to deflect attention from the real issues lying on the very surface and not requiring any birth certificate. The impostor's father was a foreigner. That alone disqualifies him (with many other things). As to where the impostor was born, you must not be so sure. Not only he had not provided any valid proof, but people in Kenya testify that he was born there.

        It was explained to me that the immigration and citizenship laws in effect at the time of Obama's birth establish him as a 'natural' us citizen even if he was born by a non-citizen father outside the us. This makes the whole birthie issue without legal relevance.

        of course obama did not write his own books. what politician [other than gingrich and retired politicians] does write his own books and speeches ?

        however, if the book is a part of his resume for president then it has a significance regarding his nature and qualifications.

          It was explained to you wrong. The "immigration and citizenship laws" apply to ordinary citizenship. The concept Natural Born Citizenship as the requirement for the US presidency relies on the definition in "Law of Nations", mentioned in the US Constitution.

        Yes, Mr. Gofen, 'Birthers' is a pejorative term and I chose to use it because people who embrace and promote the notion that Obama is not qualified to be president on that account are (a) playing into the hands of the strategists who masterminded the withholding of Obama's birth records and who did so in order to taint as conspiracy-minded paranoia all legitimate criticisms of the President's motives and means, and (b) who are, by and large, making much of an issue virtually all but the smallest fraction of the voting public would dismiss out of hand. Do you honestly believe your hair-splitting 'Law of Nations' arguments about citizenship requirements for the presidency could result in the President's removal from office two or three or more years into his term? Really? You believe that? If that is your purpose, to remove the President from office on that basis, then I guarantee you won't succeed.

        We can agree the President is not who and what he portrays himself to be, but it seems to me you and yours are serving the purposes of the men who set you on this course in the first place. They set a trap and you fell for it. No one likes being fooled so the impulse is to dig even deeper, but I suggest you stop what you're doing, climb out of the hole, brush off the dirt, and move on.

          All this still leaves open the question of why Zero was never properly vetted to any reasonable extent in the first place – forget the 'birther' aspect. It strains credulity that Axlerod (?) would and could bait a potential trap of such magnitude well before the '08 campaign was even underway. Why all the obfuscation? The fact that Zero got elected is the scam of the century.

            Why would it strain credulity that a strategy to obfuscate Obama's past connections and associations have been drafted prior to the 2008 campaign? Obama's campaign for the presidency started, for all practical purposes, the day he made his dynamic 2004 keynote speech at the Democratic convention. You better believe his people were poring over possible show-stoppers to his eventual run at the White House even then, formulating countermeasures, calculating possible impacts. They would have been foolish not to. His people are a lot of things but I would never call them stupid or shortsighted.

          1) If we can agree that "the President is not who and what he portrays himself", why did you make the statement as though "Of course the President was born in the US"?

          2) Unfortunately it is not true as though "No one likes being fooled". Not only too many do, but many even have their stakes in it.

          3) Polls show that you are wrong as though only "the smallest fraction" of the citizenry cares about such a "hair splitting thing" as violation of the constitutional notion unambiguously understood until 2008. And there are also plain criminal violations like fraudulent SS# and other things.

          4) True, this fraction is still shamefully far from 99%. It is so for many reasons, one which is that you and the like minded chose to suppress this scandalous issue. Why? Visibly in order to avoid "playing into the hands of the strategists who masterminded the withholding of Obama's birth records"…

            Your insistence that even though the President was possibly/probably born in the US yet still is not qualified to be president because of a 'Law of Nations' interpretation of citizenship is, in my view, pointless hair-splitting emphatically not "unambiguously understood" until 2008.

            So let's face it: you're simply not going to get Obama pulled from office on the basis of the arguments you're making. You're wasting your time. My remark that the President 'is not who and what he portrays himself ' was a reference to Obama's public positioning as a liberal centrist rather than as the Marxist radical strong evidence shows him to be. I wasn't talking about Obama's birth records. His birth records show he was born in Hawaii.

            Give it up, please. This Birther business is headed nowhere. You're muddying the waters to no good effect.

      This interview omits the fact that Oxford University linguists also studied these books and determined that Ayers wrote much of both of them. That came out in either late September or early October, 2008.

In contrast, Dreams compared poorly with other documents.” “Using the chi-square statistic,” they add, “Obama's and Ayers's books were indistinguishable while Obama's book was easily distinguishable.

      5) If only "the smallest fraction" of the citizenry in the nation cares about constitutionality of its president, such nation hardly has the right to exist (even in the role of banana or "web" republic).

      6) It is not "the men who set me on this course", but the SHAME! The truth, which is precious no matter what. And I will stand on it until I am dead.

      7) I do not know if the efforts of those speaking the truth will result in removing the impostor before his term. But I do know that if the impostor stays his full term unpunished, America is dead.

        You like truth; or rather, Truth? Here's some truth for you: the President will serve out his full (and hopefully only) term 'unpunished' for being the son of a non-American father. And you can stand on what you believe to be the 'precious truth' of your claim until you are dead. That's entirely your choice. And yes, you do know that your efforts will not result in the removal of the President from office–you must know this on some level, so you get points for perseverance, but that's about it.

        And finally, no, America won't die solely because Obama completes his term. We've endured bad presidents before–Jimmy Carter comes immediately to mind, but there were others, too: Buchanan, Tyler, Fillmore, Harding… We'll survive this one.

        That 'until I am dead' comment of yours sticks in the craw. I don't doubt the strength of your convictions, but emotionalism has no place in political argument. Follow the logic, debate the premises and conclusions, but don't for a moment think just because you're willing to die for a given belief somehow magically infuses validity into the arguments supporting that belief.

          You are correct only in that validity of arguments relies on proofs, rather than desire to die for them.

          If you agree that "the President is not who and what he portrays himself to be" even in terms of his philosophy, yet don't mind him to stay full term; and

          If you do not even pose the question as to who and what he is personally, the part of America which you represent IS ALREADY DEAD.

          I do not know what will happen with the other parts of the nation. The infamy like this is in orders of magnitude worse than it had ever happened under any of the previous disastrous presidents.

          I repeat: a nation which is capable of only to not reelect the criminal leaving him and his clique unpunished, is not worth of existence. It may continue to name itseelf whichever, but it is not what was founded by the Fathers. And I wish to be no part of it (giving you an opportunity to advise me to leave in any direction).

            I assert Obama and his people held onto his birth records for the sole purpose of drawing out the tinfoil hat crowd, thus discrediting those of us who believe the President to be a radical extremist disguised as a traditional Democratic liberal.

            And no, I don't advise you to leave. I advise you to stop holding forth on the vagaries and nuances of Law of Nations eligibility rules and move on. Our country needs patriots right now, not picayune obsessives fixated on President Obama's paternity.

            Let me see if I follow you. I am trying to continue the list of things you advise the real patriots to not fixate on.

            1) Obama's paternity;
            2) His Indonesian citizenship and Moslem upbringing;
            3) His fraudulent re-immersion into the US, fake SS#, fake Columbia credentials;
            4) Total refusal of the authorities to prosecute him for these felonies;
            5) Complicity of the former Pr. Bush in overlooking all the above;
            6) Complicity of the then (and present) Congress in the same overlooking;
            7) Complicity of all big and small parties, especially GOP, in not even challenging the opponent (actually campaigning for him);
            8) Complicity of the Supreme Court covering all the above;
            9) Complicity of the military brass violating the oath to protect the Constitution (rather than their behinds).
            10) Complicity of the American media already not differing from "Pravda".
            11) Normalcy and patriotism in being fooled.

            Look, President Obama is past the two year mark on his first term. Let's cut to the chase: do you honestly, truly believe you and your like-minded pals can have the current sitting president removed from office on the basis of his parentage? You do? Wow. Okay.

            I don't care how meticulously you plumb the intricacies of Constitutional Law, you are simply not going to convince enough legislators to move forward with disqualification hearings on the basis of the evidence you're presenting or the arguments you're making. For example, let's examine your claim that 'some people in Kenya say Obama was born there.' Okay, what people? Are you talking about villagers or high-ranking Kenyan officials? Who are the sources, where is the proof? You put it out there, so back it up. You can't? Color me surprised.

            The way to put President Obama in the unemployment is to beat him with the best GOP candidate we have to offer in the next election. You're not helping.

And it is his burden to prove that he is at least ordinary US citizen producing not a fake certification, but the full birth certificate. And yes, there exist testimonies of his birth in Kenya from his old granny to Kenya officials. Or and yes, there was also (a questionable?) copy of his Kenya B.C. obtained by some Lucas Smith certifiably delivered to all 535 members of the rotten Congress.

            Mr. Gofen, the President as candidate was not required to publicly produce his birth certificate in order to meet constitutional eligibility requirements. That he chose to submit the necessary documentation privately and that his state of birth, Hawaii, affirms his birth in that state evidently met the standard.

            Why did Obama handle something so mundane as birth records in such a peculiar way? I contend he did so upon the advice of his political strategists, who knew the paranoid fringe would immediately jump to the conclusion that a cover-up was in the works, creating a lot of conspiracy gabble and murk that would tend to stifle legitimate criticism, and–sure enough–his strategists were right. Here you are.

            A candidate perhaps is not required, but the party's leaders, secretaries of States and other officials ought to vet and certify all papers of the candidate for the highest post. To vet at least as much as they vet applicant for security. And the Resume of this "candidate" would not qualify him to guard a toilet of the White House. The outrage is exactly in that the party's leaders et cetera neglected the duty, and made possible for the impostor to campaign, be elected and certified without the papers.

            "Hawaii, affirms his birth in that state evidently met the standard": which standard? Definitely yours, because you already assured everybody about the impostor's birthplace – even when the Governor of Hawaii is no more sure.

If the wrong parentage is not a legitimate enough violation of the Constitution for you, I mentioned also plain felonies like fake SS#. There are numerous counts of criminal indictment presented by the American Grand Jury, and by the Pastor's Manning trial – all indictments deliberately ignored by the rotten Congress, Supreme Court, and by other officials. And yes, there are witnesses of his Kenyan birthplace. You are going out of your skin to defend the lie, the 800 pound gorilla in the White House. Already many "boys" in the crowd shouted that the emperor has no cloth, but the cheerleaders ordered them to shut up….

    Therefore special thank you to Mr. Cashill for his search of the truth. However why not to seek the more fundamental part of the truth?

    Both the question

    "Do you think Obama was born in the United States?"

    and the answer

    "Yes …"

    are obfuscating, because whether Obama was born in the US is a secondary issue. His both fathers were foreigners. That alone disqualifies him as a would be natural born citizen according to the Constitutional requirement to the president.

        The concept Natural Born Citizenship as the requirement for the US presidency relies on the definition in "Law of Nations", mentioned in the US Constitution. Until the "fallacy of omission" with Obama/Soetoro, this definition had been always understood as a requirement that both parents must be the US citizens.….

          Not so. If a female, U.S.Citizen who marries a foreign national, said national is entitled to citizenship.

          It is you who is mistaken. I know many women who have married nationals of other nations and this makes the foreign person a candidate for citizenship. Use a .gov cite instead of a .com site for accurate information.

          I have numerous relatives who have married foreign nationals and sex does not matter.

          A common question about immigration is, "when can I file for citizenship." Before you can apply for U.S. citizenship under the immigration law with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services – USCIS (formerly INS), you must first have a green card or permanent residence. If you received your green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen, you may be able to apply for citizenship through naturalization after having your green card for three years. In all other situations, you must wait five years.
          How do I know if I can apply under the three year rule?

          1. You must be married to a U.S. citizen.
          2. You must be a lawful permanent resident – green card holder.
          3. You must have resided continuously within the United States for a period of at least three years after having received permanent residence.
          4. You must have been “living in marital union” with the citizen spouse for the three years immediately preceding the date of examination on the application, and your spouse has been a United States citizen for the duration of that three year period.

          A divorce, legal separation, or even an informal separation may signify dissolution of the marital union. "Living in marital union" has been interpreted to mean actually residing together. Although the applicant is not required to live with the USC spouse after filing the application, they still must be married at the time of naturalization. But for all practical purposes, if you are not living with your spouse at the time of the naturalization interview, USCIS will highly scrutinize your eligibility. "

          Note it state U.S. Citizen, not designating sex.

            You do not know what you are speaking about, confusing ordinary citizenship (§1401 – what you asked about your lawyers) and the Natural Born citizenship, required for the US presidentship.

            Often "Natural born citizenship" is confused with §1401 of the US Code "Nationals and citizens of United States at birth". Although the words sound similar, §1401 defines only ordinary citizenship including such shallow one as that of anchor babies (i.e. born to legal guests of the country, §1401(a), never mind illegal residents).

            1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

            2. Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice-President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the Executive and Judicial officers of a State, or the members of the Legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such State, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State.

            3. No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

            4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

            You are attempting to use an irrelevant document. Oh, and please reread article 14 that you posted to this document regarding Natural Born.

            I do not give a rip regarding what some international document claims regarding Natural Citizenship.

            Article 14 has nothing to do with the concept Natural Born Citizenship: it is about usual citizenship. In fact no article or Amendment in the US Constitution defines the concept Natural Born Citizen, as it was well known then from the Law of Nation. See:

    Obama had never attended Columbia U. – as proved during the people's trial May 20, 2010 organized by the prominent Pastor James David Manning of Harlem, New York.

    Where are all the "We went to school together" friends and classmates?

    i was, and still am subscribed to jack cashill's newsletter and was impressed with his research and reasoning at the time. in particular his citing of seagoing turns of phrase in the book. my late father was a merchant seaman and used much of the same language, which is foreign to obama's experience, but would come naturally to bill ayers. i cannot credit not voting for obama to mr. cashill, i had made that decision early on, based on my estimate of obama's character, a "snake oil salesman" but mr. cashill's writing did confirm my decision, and i thank him for that. needless to say i will not be voting for obama again next year, but there are two black possible candidates i would vote for while keeping my vermont freeman's oath firmly in mind

    I suspect the reason journalists have not picked up on Andersen's claim is that it is based on what unnamed "sources in Hyde Park" reportedly said to him. Generally, journalists require sources who will go on record. Some evidence might be helpful also. Otherwise, you have just a rumor that people who want to believe true will accept without question and those who do not won't. There is no "there" there.

    I urge ever one reading this to support a TRUE CONSERVATIVE in 2012. Michelle Bachman, Herman Cain, Sarah Palin, Donald Trump, or Allen West would do a FAR better job in the White House than BHO. All are patriots, have experience that would make a real contribution to the betterment of our country, and would do everything possible to reverse the damage of BHO. There may be others.

    No, no. Let's not put this story out. It's a great story and I'm sure it's true and I found it enlightening. But let's keep our dirty 'right-wing' fingerprints off it as much as possible and just let it bubble beneath the surface. It'll come out when it's ready. Personally, I don't think Bill Ayers can keep his mouth shut past the next election, he's it too much of a whore for media attention. After Obama wins or loses, Ayers will come forward on his own to demand historical recognition.
    This is NOT going to sway any votes in the next election. Accept that now, and avoid the trap of talking about things that take time away from talking about Obamas destructive policies. The American people already know Obama is a liar–he's a politican and we saw his lips moving!

    During the campaigns, I doubt that few would have called into question Obama's authorship of "Dreams From My Father." To do so would have brought down the charge of racist. Bill Clinton, the "first Black President" got into trouble when he pointed out the obvious the most Blacks would vote for Obama.

    Whether Ayers wrote "Dreams …" or not, the 2012 election will be about Obama's record as President. That he lies, there is no doubt. That "Dreams …" was not his exclusive work just adds to that point. Hopefully, the voters will cast their ballot taking into account Martin Luthor King Jr's. words: "where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." More and more these words work against Obama than for him.

    I have a strong hunch that the secrecy over Barry's origins has to do with his parentage and age. Since his mother apparently left to attend the University of Washington mere weeks after giving birth, I contend that he was born some years earlier (to an underage mother) and that the father might have been the pedophile Frank Marshall Davis. Barry seems to be older than 49, with hair dye differences showing up in recent photos.

    I don't recall who said "it's easier to start a revolution than to write a good line of prose." Composition of a simple paragraph requires an interlude of concentration with isolation. Imagine how much more it takes to write an article, much less a book! For this reason I would bet that almost all public figures have their books as well as all of their other writings ghost-written to a greater or lesser extent. Politicians especially are continually in a social mode–shaking hands, backslapping, phoning, etc. I would favor a requirement that the real authors of every writing, including judicial decisions, be revealed.
