Successful Palestine Statehood Vote Looms

The New York Times ran a banner front page headline on September 14, 2011 titled “U.S. Scrambles to Avert Palestinian Vote at U.N.”

The Times headline should have read, “The Obama Administration Scrambles to Avoid Its Own Self-Fulfilling Prophesy.”

Next week, the United Nations General Assembly will almost certainly approve an upgrade of the status of the Palestinian Authority from nonvoting “observer entity” to “observer state,” placing it on par with the Holy See. This will happen whether or not the Palestinians try for full UN member state status, which would first require approval by the Security Council.

President Obama has promised to veto such a Security Council resolution. However, the United States has only one vote in the General Assembly and cannot stop the General Assembly – packed with Palestinian supporters and Israel-bashers, including craven European countries – from granting observer state status to the Palestinians if they request it.

While a vote in the General Assembly alone would not confer full UN membership rights to a Palestinian state, it would open the door for the Palestinians to join various UN bodies and treaties. Of most concern to Israel, an observer state status might well allow the Palestinians to become a treaty member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and pursue claims there against Israel for alleged war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. Although Israel is not itself a member of the ICC, the court could still take jurisdiction of such claims if they are alleged to have arisen within the territory of a Palestinian state that is an ICC member.

Outgoing U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell used the phrase “train wreck” in an interview last May to describe the upcoming UN vote.

Yet it was President Obama who helped set this train wreck in motion in a speech he delivered on September 23, 2010 to the UN General Assembly. In his speech, President Obama made a prediction that the Palestinians are now exploiting in support of their statehood bid. Obama declared to the UN General Assembly that “when we come back here next year, we can have an agreement that will lead to a new member of the United Nations – an independent, sovereign state of Palestine, living in peace with Israel.”

As Reuters reported on September 7, 2011, President Obama’s words are being used by the Palestinians to make international recognition of their statehood a reality. “If he said it, he must have meant it,” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said during a 36-second radio spot promoting the Palestinians’ upcoming statehood campaign at the United Nations. Although Obama administration officials have stressed that Obama was speaking aspirationally within the context of reaching a negotiated agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, Abbas has chosen to characterize Obama’s words to the General Assembly last year as an “Obama promise.”

“We are reminding [Obama] of what he said in the United Nations in 2010,” said Ahmad Zaki ElAreedi, director of Voice of Palestine radio.

President Obama’s terms for what he proclaimed in his 2010 UN speech would be “an agreement that will lead to a new member of the United Nations – an independent, sovereign state of Palestine” would jeopardize Israel’s security.

From virtually the very beginning of his presidency, President Barack Obama has gone out of his way to push Israel into making unreasonable unilateral concessions. He demanded a freeze on all settlement building, including expansions of existing settlements. He validated the Palestinians’ bogus claims to East Jerusalem. And he threw Israel under the bus earlier this year with his irresponsible proposal that Israel negotiate borders with a new Palestinian state based on the indefensible pre-1967 lines, with some unspecified mutual land swaps.

Egypt’s UN ambassador, Maged Abdelaziz, explicitly linked President Obama’s “peace” proposal with “the efforts by the Palestinian leadership to garner the most possible number of recognitions of the state of Palestine on the borders of 1967, with those swaps.”

While expecting Israel to essentially return to pre-1967 conditions, Obama did not demand that the Palestinians simultaneously give up their “right of return” claim for millions of Palestinian refugees to relocate to the pre-1967 Israel territory, which would extinguish Israel’s identity as the world’s only homeland for the Jewish people. At the same time as demanding the “right of return” for Palestinians to pre-1967 Israel cities and towns, along with their own independent state, the Palestinians hypocritically do not want any Jews living anywhere in their independent state, according to the Palestinians’ ambassador to the United States. “I think it would be in the best interest of the two people to be separated,” he said, in a two-faced remark that ignored the contrary consequences of implementing the Palestinians’ “right of return” demand.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration has only lightly criticized the Palestinians’ plans to set up a so-called “unity government” backed by both Palestinian President Abbas, whose authority now extends only to the West Bank territory, and by the Iranian-backed terrorist organization Hamas, which controls Gaza and refuses to recognize Israel.

Some have argued that it is no big deal if the Palestinians succeed in obtaining General Assembly recognition of observer state status, since they still will not be a full-fledged member state in the United Nations as a whole. The European Union is reportedly trying to broker a compromise to avoid a showdown at the Security Council that would force the U.S. to exercise its veto of a resolution recommending full UN member state status. The thinking is to start with the baby step of observer state status and come back after the U.S. 2012 presidential election (which the Palestinians, Arab countries and Europe hope will lead to Obama’s re-election) for a full UN membership bid.

It's about "settlements" stupid ! Under 242, Israel's "settlement" policy is illegal. 242 gave Israel the right to administer it's occupation, not the right to create facts on the ground through settlement expansion and annexation pending a final solution.

Israel is delegitimizing itself throught it's "settlement" policy. The UN has warned, the West has warned, the EU has warned for decades. Obama went on the brink of renunciation, putting the full weight of the President of the USA in the balance , begging Israel to at least halt it's "settlement" expansion and get back under 242 rules, before its to late.

Instead of bashing Obama, Israelis schould be asking why the vital interests of the nation are being sacrificed on the alter of Religious Zionism's "Eretz Jisrael" fantasy.

l bet the lsraelis really relish the thought of doing "peace" deals with people who cheer when they hear about lsraeli babies throats being slit while they sleep in their cots.

    • Joseph Klein

No, it's about Palestinian terrorism and rejection of the existence of any Jewish state, which started way before Israel's "settlement" policy.

Obama is pushing Israel under the bus, which he will finish doing if re-elected.

Before the PROPHESY of 1948 was fulfilled, the land was desolate and had a few Baudouin tents, the land was NOT called Palestine, and there was NEVER any historical PALESTINE. The JEWS were brought back to their GOD given land by miracle and since then Israel has prospered, flourished and is blooming like a flower in the desert by hard work and wisdom.
With all the monies that the many Arab block nations have spent in destroying what Israel has built, they could have furnished the Palestinians with a land somewhere with schools, hospitals, gardens, and a whole new nation, but that is not what Arabs are about. They want to destroy, plunder and steal what others have built. Have you ever seen any producing Arab nations, with many factories, or many productions that OTHERS did not build for them? 1948? [Before that, "historians, demographers, and travelers described the Arab population as 'decreasing,' and the land as 'thinly populated,' 'unoccupied,' 'uninhabited,' and 'almost abandoned.'" (Dershowitz, 2003)] unquote..
Unfortunately, the Arabs could not stand to have a Jewish state in any part of the Middle East. Their ONLY GOAL IS TO SLAUGHTER Jews, burn their homes and rid the world of the Jews. They do not really care about having a nation, but are hell bent only on destroying the JEWS. It is A Satanic plot from the beginning.
IT WILL never happen because GOD is with the Israel.

Mr.Crackerjack, the state of Israel has a right to exist. She also has the right to secure borders. As long as the "Palestinians" refuse to recognize Israel's rights it does not have the right to a state. If you remember your history (the real history) Israel was attacked by a combined force of Arab members. The Arab dwellers fled from the land as Israel was advancing (not to mention the land that was purchased) . Israel defeated her foes and her right to take the land from Muslim forces(the aggressor) means the land of "Palestine" was hers. The so called initiative to give the Arabs the land that is rightly Israel's by right of conquest in a defensive war argues against what is going on in the UN. If the UN cannot abide by her own rules it is a strong argument against the existence of the UN. Time to pull the plug and stop funding the UN with American dollars and to send it packing. Your argument for the Palestinians does not fit the facts of history and is full of logical and factual errors. Get off Israel's back.

Lets stick to the truth fellas , you know , minus your spin . Obama has already stated that he will veto any such move by the UN or the Palestinians .

    • Joseph Klein

The truth is that a veto in the Security Council, which Obama has already said the U.S. will exercise (obviously with the 2012 election in mind), can only stop the Palestinians' bid for full UN membership at this time. It cannot stop the General Assembly from voting an upgrade of the Palestinians' status to an observer state which has various consequences described in the article. Obama's hostility towards Israel from the very beginning of his administration has helped embolden the Palestinians to go to the UN in the first place, as evidenced by their quotes in the article.

Bush Jr. campaigned on the promise to move the American Embassy to Jerusalem …has anyone seen that happen ? The minimum requirements under any and all US brokered agreements were either ignored , never adhered to or violated by the Palestinians .And through them all , at the end of the day the Israelis were never forced to do ANYTHING they hadn't first agreed upon to do themselves .Nor will they in his present Obama Admin .
BTW , NO present or previous American Admin. has correctly addressed the obvious and TRUE intent of the Palestinians to drive the Jews into the sea .

Along the lines of what mlcblog and Mike Elmore said , Weizman stated that G_D placed him[ Truman } in his mothers womb for just this moment . A bit melodramatic , but nonetheless food for thought .

My goodness, prior to 1948, the Jewish newspaper was called "the Palestinian Post" and only Jews were referred to as "Palestians" , and mainly by the Arabs (who wanted nothing to do with the name Palestinian).

The Palestinians are nothing more than proxy terrorists to the Arab Muslim states whom they will never allow to be citizens of their states nor to ever have a state of their own. It is all posturing. It is also a matter of record that Palestinians strap munitions on their own women and children and send them out on homicide-suicide missions to murder other innocent women and children in markets, restuarants, on school buses, and in their homes. The Palestinians in their own words and by their actions are committed to the genocide of the Jewish people therefore, have foreited their rights to even exist at all let alone having a UN and US sanctioned terrorist state of their own.

  • Jim

But there already exists a Palestinian state ;it is called Jordan . The west bank belonged to Jordan. Jordan attacked Israel . Israel counter attacked ,beat Jordan which pulled out of the west bank. Eventually Jordan quit claim on the west bank. The rest of the intended Palestinian state i.e Jordan still exists and is chock full of Palestinians.

By the way was the movement of Israel settlers into the west bank done only by force or was the Palestinian paid for his house and or land with out duress ? If a house or land was taken by force was it because that property was a launching point for an attack on Israel or the legitimate settlers. Did Israel settlers build on unclaimed land? If so they did not steal the land.

As the west bank was abandoned by Jordan to whom did Jordan will it.? Nobody,by default it goes to Israel as they had to pay for it by a defending war against a Jordanian attack.

The UN has no right to be involved in this question.

Stop stealing land! This is what has caused much resistance which is violent…from both sides! Most of the above comments point to racism and hate toward the Arab population. The way the Israeli government treats ordinary Palestinians is abhorant! Respect thy neighbour, and your neighbour will respect you. And again. STOP STEALING LAND! The Palestinians deserve a state. Israel went thru the un, and Palestine will do the same.

    • Joseph Klein

The Palestinians could have had their own state 63 years ago. Instead they and their neighboring Arab countries decided to attack Israel and try to drive the Jews into the sea. It didn't work. For twenty additional years, there were no Jewish settlements in the West Bank or Gaza – which were controlled by Jordan and Egypt respectively. Still no independent Palestinian state. Instead, Israel was attacked again in 1967 and the PLO launched its terrorist campaign. The Palestinians have had additional chances for an indepndent state since. Everytime they have followed their leaders' all-or-nothing failed rejectionist policies.

By the way, the "Palestinians" were originally migrants from Egypt and other countries not long before Jews began arriving from Europe. It is racist to say that the Arab emigrees were entitled to own all the land they migrate to but Jews, many of whom originally bought their land from the Turks, are not.

    • Jayson Rex

The Arabs that like to call themselves "Palestinians" should be moved to Saudi Arabia forthwith, all of them, and from that day on this is where Palestine, the new democratic state, will be located. No more stories, no more Chrtistian charities, no more flotillas, no more bullsk.t. Enough is enough. And those that love cute terrorists so very much, let them take a couple home to shelter and feed.

Imagine in the current time if France would want to create its own state in Michigan and separate it from the U.S. French are a minority in Michigan so democratic vote on the separation would not work because they would be outvoted by the rest of the Americans living in Michigan. So imagine if they had a historic opportunity when the U.S. is at its weakest and militarily occupy a part of Michigan and impose a regime where only French can vote and all the others who lived there cannot. Furthermore, the occupiers rename the occupied part of Michigan as the “French State” where not only that Americans are not welcome, but they are systematically expelled over time creating huge refugee camps in nearby states of Indiana and Ohio. Imagine then that at that point in history the artificial organization called the United Nations is full of French supporters and somehow that makes the occupation “legal” and Americans who fight for their homes in the occupied part of Michigan are labeled as terrorists. The occupation is a part of a careful log-term plan (i.e. Zionism) of acquiring land by French, so literally days after the occupation is implemented (what a coordinated plan!) the occupiers import millions of other French from all over the world to increase their population in Michigan from around 100,000 to over 5 Million in a short period. Then Americans resist and fight to regain the occupied part of Michigan, but Russia steps in, sends weapons, cash, and everything else the occupiers need to sustain the occupation.

What do you think all of us Americans would feel? We would hate French first, and then all of their supporters (Russia in this analogy) that make the occupation of our land possible. Still questioning yourself why people in the Middle East and other parts of the world do not like us? Because Zionist controlled our government, not the people, supported the very exact scenario as described above against our will and with our tax money making us accomplices in this unspeakable crime. The scenario that would outrage all of us Americans and make us fight against it if it happened in Michigan or anywhere else in the U.S.

This comment is not intended to make derogatory remarks about France and Russia. It is merely used as an example of how Americans would be outraged and fight back in the same situation as the forced establishment of the Zionist regime and its occupation of Palestine.

Urge our state representatives and senators to immediately stop any remaining support for the Zionist regime. Much of the support already stopped because of the increasing pressure on this issue, but we Americans need to completely distance ourselves from this oppressive regime and start actively opposing it

  • Dexter renz

You can definitely copy, repost, or email mine to anyone including lobbying senators, state representatives and any other public officials who shape our country’s foreign policies.

The main Zionist claim is that they have a supreme right to some of Palestinian territory because they lived there thousands of years ago. Let’s examine the core and real nature of this claim.

Firstly, this claim is mistaken and selfish in its core concept because Zionists fail to recognize that history is a continuum and that there were other people living in majority in Palestine before the Jews and also after the Jews. Zionists simply cut history at a convenient point for them and claim ancestral ties to the land as of that convenient point.

Secondly, whatever the claim, it is beyond absurd to try to shape modern world based on thousands of years old maps. Imagine if the rest of the world would be reshaped by who was on the land thousands of years ago. It would cause horrific wars, countless refugees, and unimaginable human suffering, exactly what is happening in Palestine.

Thirdly and most disturbing, Zionist goal was to establish a Jewish state wherever possible. Palestine may have been a preference, but Palestine was not the only location that Zionists planned as their state in modern times. Another location was Argentina where Jews have been migrating for hundreds of years for the purpose of establishing a state. Also, locations in Europe were on the list and that’s why the Catholic Church was killing/expelling Jews since Roman times (read the history of the Holly Inquisition). Whatever the location, Zionist plan was to simply occupy the people living on the land even if that would mean imposing a regime worst than Nazi Germany’s from which they escaped. And Zionists would just use a different ideological coloring than the one used in Palestine in the attempt to rationalize the occupation.

In conclusion, the main claim on which the Zionist regime is built in Palestine is erroneous, selfish, and a lie. I am categorically against generalizing, and recognize that many Jews are against the crimes the Zionist regime is committing and that many Jews are leading the global resistance to it. They should be proud

  • Rob Winchester

If it is ever reached, the current and any other artificial “peace agreement” will be illegitimate before it is ever signed because (1) all people living in Palestine regardless of religion, race, origin, etc. (hereinafter “All People of Palestine”) were never given a choice on how they want their land to be governed, and (2) all contracts signed under duress are null and void.

The biggest problem in Palestine is that the Zionist regime never offered a choice to All People of Palestine on how they want to govern their land because the Zionist regime cannot exist as a democratic entity. If there was ever any democratic process in Palestine, Zionists would have been outvoted and the Zionist regime would have never existed. That is why the Zionist regime is the occupier because it does not offer choice (i.e. democracy), but instead imposes its regime (i.e. occupies). Imagine if Russians would simply occupy a town in the U.S. where they are in significant numbers and attempt to create a Russian state there without giving the rest of the Americans living there a choice. Imagine then if they would try to institute a “peace agreement” that would attempt to legitimize their occupation. The “peace agreement” would logically and legally be illegitimate because the Americans were not given a choice.

Under all countries’ laws, any contract is null and void if it is signed under duress. The current Palestine “peace agreement” process reminds me of The Godfather movie where the mafia boss (i.e. the Zionist regime) made a guy “an offer he could not refuse” by placing a gun (i.e. Zionist conventional and nuclear arsenal) to his head and making him sign the contract. Like the mafia boss’ offer, any “peace agreement” other than the choice for All People of Palestine is a crime, and the contract is legally null and void.

The bottom line is that All People of Palestine never wanted to divide their land into artificial two states the way the occupation and this “peace agreement” attempt to divide it. From the beginning of the Zionist regime to its unavoidable end, All People of Palestine and the region never wanted the Zionist regime and they do not want it even more after all the atrocities the Zionist regime committed. I just cannot believe how the Zionist regime can be so ignorant to think that this or any other “peace agreement” that does not allow people to choose how they want to be governed will last and ensure its people’s survival. The Zionist regime fails to realize that no matter if it succeeds in muscling this “peace agreement” by unspeakable historic coercion tens of millions of moral people around the world will oppose it until it is corrected, and until justice and free choice prevail. Also, ever increasing number of Jewish people are realizing that Zionism is becoming a destructive force for them and are leading the global resistance to it
