NBC Unsure if Islamic Fundamentalist Government Would Be Good or Bad

As Americans watch with trepidation the protests against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, there is at least one thing that we should all be able to agree on: that if Egypt’s eventual government is Islamic fundamentalist, this would be a bad thing.
That belief is not necessarily so, according to NBC. In tonight’s report from Cairo, NBC Nightly News, through reporter Martin Fletcher, took the position that no one really knows if an Islamic fundamentalist government would be “good or bad.”
It appears that not only is the Leftist media failing to wake up to the brutality inherent in Islamic fundamentalism, some are now actively peddling the idea that it might actually be a “good” thing for a government to be Islamic fundamentalist.
One of NBC‘s top reporters in the Middle East, Martin Fletcher, tells his viewers that no one really knows if an Islamic fundamentalist government would be bad. He also offers scenarios of things that could happen, but does not note whether or not these things would be as a result of a legitimate democracy or of Islamic fundamentalism, leaving uninformed viewers with the impression that either might be just as good as the other.
More troubling questions. Will Islamic fundamentalists, well organized almost everywhere, fill the power vacuum, and is that good or bad?Who knows? Certainly experts are calling this the end of an era. It could lead to necessary policy changes and a drop in tension, or it could usher in spreading revolutions.
Watch below for the full report.
At times, Martin Fletcher has offered helpful reports from the Middle East. For instance, when others in the media were dragging their feet on the characterization of Hamas as a terrorist organization when it came to power in Palestine, Fletcher reported, “Democracy in the Palestinian territories has brought to power a fundamentalist Muslim group devoted to the destruction of Israel and the creation of an Islamic state…” It is precisely this example which shows that Fletcher should certainly know better than to report that we don’t “know” if an Islamic fundamentalist government would be “good or bad”?
We can only speculate about what reasoning Fletcher might use to defend such a preposterous claim that it is somehow an open question whether or not Islamic fundamentalism may be an acceptable form of government. I do not want to think he is intentionally shoring up the notion in people that Islamist regimes can be good. Rather, in giving him the benefit of the doubt, I should think this is a claim based in cowardice such as we find time and time again in history. As evil advances in the world, cowards slide further and further down the slippery slope of denial. The most tragic example of this in recent history is the Holocaust during World War II.
Those who have concern about the rise of Islam in the world should take note. It could very well be that the most hard-core leftists in media will never wake up. In fact, it is entirely possible that the more dangerous the world becomes, the more the Leftist media will embrace the denials about the harsh realities of fundamentalist Muslim regimes.
