Libya, Syria and Obama’s Double Standards

Syria is an avowed enemy of the West, a strong candidate for membership in the Axis of Evil. Closely aligned with Iran, it is inherently hostile to Israeli and American interests, funds terror and is now slaughtering its own civilians. And yet, in the Obama White House, the ongoing chaos in Syria has been treated with limited interest. There is certainly none of the apparent umbrage that was directed at former Egyptian leader (and longtime U.S.-ally) Hosni Mubarak in his final days in power, and there is little worry that President Bashar Assad’s government will share the same fate as Gaddafi’s regime, which is being bombed by NATO for committing crimes very similar to the ones currently taking place in cities and towns across Syria.

If one were to use Libya as the standard for when Western intervention is warranted, Syria would certainly qualify. The military crackdown against anti-government protesters continues. Military forces loyal to President Assad have killed more than 400 civilians since March, with more than 100 of those occurring in the last week alone. Syrians have braved gunfire from soldiers to collect the bodies from the streets and to ensure they receive proper burials. The latter, especially, has proven dangerous: On Saturday, military snipers opened fire on a funeral procession for those killed by government forces, adding a reported nine more to the death toll.

Such use of military force against civilians is despicable, but not exactly out of character for the regime. Syria has been classified as a state sponsor of terrorism by the State Department since 1979, and has continued to support anti-Western groups active in Iraq and the Palestinian territories. It is also deeply involved in the destabilization of Lebanon, which Syria has long hoped to control. Assad’s regime, for example, is widely suspected of involvement, as is Hezbollah, in the assassination of Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri in 2005. Hariri had been critical of Syria’s influence in Lebanon, and was killed by a suicide bomber.

Syria has also dabbled in acquiring weapons of mass destruction. In 2007, there was a strange series of news reports detailing Israeli aircraft violating Syrian airspace and firing munitions into an empty field. Before too long, it became public knowledge that what Syria hoped people thought was an empty field was actually a nuclear facility that the regime was secretly constructing with the help of the North Koreans. Once Israel and the United States became aware of its existence, the Israeli Air Force destroyed the facility in a surprise air attack. Syria denied that the facility had a military purpose and then refused to cooperate with the international inspectors sent to examine the rubble.

In short, Syria is just as devious and dangerous a regime as Libya, arguably more so, particularly insofar as Israel is concerned. And yet the West has decided to sit this one out.

well obama is a avowed enemy of this nation and so are most of the third world people.

  • sam

i tell you where bistandards are
it is with US policies with Israel and the rest of the world

    • davarino

please enlighten. You mean Israel is the only nation we require to make peace with their avowed enemy that only wants to destroy them?

  • informer

Director of policy planning at the State Dept announced that the US is no longer
pursuing Israeli-Syrian peace because of the 'things' Assad's government is
    doing 'against their own people'.

So, killing scores of Israelis through Hamas, PIJ, and Hezbollah is okay, while
shooting a few hundred protestors is an affront to the White House's democratic
    hunch.

    • Fred Dawes

we have no political policy on anything inside the USA Or outside, its normal after all obama is just apuppet of others.

Eventually the Arab uprising has become a matter of buying the Arab masses by releasing money in the name of reforms and giving out other benefits. Ironically, the wealthy King of Saud may do it but not the country like Syria having no oil wealth at hand to dish out. In order to bring calmness in the Syrian streets; President Assad of Syria is expected to use its security forces to exercise their control which may result in killing on the streets for which; it is very much expected that after Libya UN resolution may get passed against Syria.

B-rock said, like a robot, he is a christian, a person of faith. As a side note, its funny how O can say that and you hear nothing from the press. Bush said that and their heads exploded. So anyway, we all know he is a muslim, which is fine, but now you know why he is simpathetic to the muslim cause in the middle east, aka iranian conquest of the middle east then the world. You do that by allowing the dominoes to fall that are strategic to that end. Ta da, not that hard to understand.

Thank you, thank you very much

    • trickyblain

I've never met a robot that claimed to be a Christian or a person of faith.

And, of course, "we" do not "know he is a Muslim." You choose to believe it — despite all evidence to the contrary.

Are you really so far gone as to believe that Iran is going to conquer the world?

  • StephenD

Informer is right on. However, it is worth pointing out that the Administrations priorities are in the exact order they want them to be. To hell with Israel, and the American taxpayer for that matter. I heard Hillary speak the other day proudly proclaiming that they (We) are going to give $25 Million in aid to the "people of Libya" including funds for boots, medications and HALAL MEALS." Isn't it nice to know they are so conscious of the need to provide religious specific meals? I wonder if they offered Kosher meals too or are they simply acknowledging that Libya is all Muslim? I always thought our money couldn't be used to promote a religion. Oh well, I guess Obama knows better!

  • Wesley69

THIS ADMINISTRATION GETS TOO MANY PASSES. This administration does have clear goals in mind in the Mideast. What look like blunders, looked at in a different light, are deliberate policy choices.

  • Wesley69

Having read the book, THE ROOTS OF OBAMA'S RAGE, by DINESH D'SOUZA, I canlook at almost everything this President and find the explaination in what D'Souza wrote. Once you read it, you can understand the whys!!!

One needs to understand the President‘s thinking. Obama’s policies have their roots in his Kenyan father. An anti-colonialist, his father viewed the US as the successor of British and French imperialism. These countries gained their wealth at the expense of the poorer nations of the world.

According to Obama Sr., when the US is weakened both economically and militarily, the world will be better off because it is the source of most of the world's problems. This is why Obama is dead set to reduce American influence and power in the world. Remember, he was a member of a church for 20 years where the minister said God damn America.

This anti-colonial pattern of thinking can explain much with regard to Obama’s actions: Obama apology tours, in the Mideast, the START treaty with Russia, with NASA's new mission to make Muslims feel good, with a Stimulus that did not stimulate, the energy policy that will destroy the economic recovery and his actions against an ally, Egypt, Israel, Yemen and non-action against enemies like Iran, Syria, even his failure to act in Libya until there was a UN resolution that allowed action against Gaddafi.

A case in point: Israel was created in 1948 by the Colonial Powers that dominated the UN. It is therefore, like Mubarak's Egypt, a colonial client state. Obama will do nothing for Israel regarding Iran until Israel allows for the creation of an independent Palestinian State, splitting the city of Jerusalem once again. To Obama, this would settle many problems in the Mideast. However, the Palestinians would not have to recognize Israel's right to exist. If the Crusader State, Israel, was no more, peace would be achieved and terrorism would end. We would lose a valuable ally, but it would demonstrate to the Muslims that we do not support the colonial ideas of the past.

    • sodizzy

Yup. Barry seems to be carrying out the wishes of his father.

      • Wesley69

Those dreams are now his own and we will suffer because of them. Obama intends to purge America of its sins. It is a sacred mission to Obama. That's where the Messiah belief comes in. He believe he thinks he's the annointed one.

      • sodizzy

I get it now. The thing he wanted to hide on the birth certificate was his father's Kenyan citizenship, not American. This disqualifies him as a natural born citizen. It is not just on our soil but from an American mom and dad, for reasons that our forefathers foresaw and are all too obvious now that the horse is out of the barn.

        Anyone else see this?

  • Jim_C

Bull. US policy on Israel has not, and will not alter significantly with any presidency. To pretend otherwise is purely disingenuous.

Oh, and this article is laughable; another girlish "What's his 'secret motivation' nonsense."

    • kasandra

If that were the case, why do only 6% of Israelis like him, a far lower approval rating than any other U.S. president save, maybe, Carter?

      • trickyblain

        source?

      • Jim_C

        Bull.

    • Bookem

Instead of just doing what this administration does incessantly, attacking a position without explaining it's own, please, deign to enlighten us with >your< explanation, since the ones provided are laughable, as for why we're in Libya and not in Syria.

      • trickyblain

        1) The Libya intervention took a few weeks (during which the loons were howling about Obama not doing anything, before pulling a 180 when he did something).

        2) There was and remains a viable, armed native opposition force in Libya. The idea is that this force removes the need for NATO/US ground comittments. This is not the case in Syria. Lunacy that people would, on one hand, slam the mission in Libya as "open-ended" while on the other hand condemning for not over-reaching into Syria.

  • Jim_C

Yay! I was hoping someone would refer to the Evil Soros! Bwahahahhahaa!

    • Fred Dawes

      that will never happen

  • Amused

HEY , ALL YOU BIRTHERS – YOU GOT YOUR BIRTH CERTIFICATE , AND IT EXACTLY WHAT HAS BEEN STATED BEFORE BY OBAMA AND THE MILLIONS OF AMERICANS WHO ARE NOT DULLARDS ……..NOW WHAT ?

FPM SO CONVENIENTLY BURIED THAT BIRTH CERTIFICATE THREAD BY SHAPIRO .

    PATHETIC MAN , PATHETIC!

    • sodizzy

off topic Plus it's NOT a birth certificate but a (possibly fabricated) Certificate of Live Birth, which requires a lower standard of proof about the actual birth of said child.

    • welldoneson

Obama has NOT "released" his Birth Certificate because he has NOT got one.
What the Kenyan Quisling has "released" is a fake Certificate of Live Birth.
It would appear that Obama's supporters are considerably more out of it
than they pretend their opponents are. Too freakin' funny!

  • Amused

Off Topic ? Not at all . And Ya'll know it too .

    • welldoneson

No, amused, your witless snivelling about the Bama Birth was indeed off topic.
The topic, numbskull, is "Libya, Syria, and Obama's Double Standards".
BTW have you noticed that Egypt is renewing diplomatic relations with Iran and is
making noises about breaking off relations with Israel AND throwing out a peace
treaty with Israel? And the left told us "everything will be fine, don't worry about
Egypt". It's getting tiresome watching you Obamites be wrong over and over..

  • Amused

And What you got to say DAWES , you're the racist with the biggest mouth ,screaming he was born in Kenya . You can EAT your words now .

    • Fred Dawes

come on this is so funny obama just did one more move on people this BC Is so phony its a joke but you got to hand it to this black communist he has the moves down to a T.

By the way why am i a racist and you are not? but i love you anyway my little child.

      I will say no more.

      • WilliamJamesWard

Obama is a fraud Fred, it does not matter whare he was born, it was
a punishment to America for following leftist subversives. In a few
months we will see considerable change and the Left is doing all it
can to destroy America, it may be possible to oust all of them and
clean up our Nation, the process will not be amusing……..William

They realized most of Americans have stopped thinking beyond their own individual lives. They realized this age was that of the celebrity – American Idol. The Image. They took advantage of it.

The way to get rid of them is education in the tactics of the enemy. Awareness of the games they play is part of the battle. But one must not fear to engage at maximum intensity. They went for broke and won. The forces opposed to them MUST do the same.

    • sodizzy

      I heartily agree!! let's engage.
