The Palestinian Authority is officially calling the United States an “obstacle to peace.” It is saying that the US – a nation that has worked harder than any other to bring about peace, a nation that brokered Camp David – cannot be an honest broker in negotiations. The spotlight on Middle East regimes in transition has left Tunisia and Egypt behind for the most part and zeroed in on Libya. I believe that it is worthwhile however to examine one of the early images of the revolt against the rule of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. The fact that it was a complex amalgam of forces that joined together in the streets of Tunis was brought home to me in a photo (above) in the January 25, 2011 issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Left have fused questions about President Obama’s religious affiliation to the birth certificate issue in an effort to paint conservatives as conspiracy minded paranoids, but what is more disturbing about this strategy is that, sewn into the new approach, there is a subtle mix of McCarthy-era loyalty oath and Orwellian show trial.
