Live and Let Die

Nichole Hungerford is associate editor at FrontPage Magazine.

In his speech on the turmoil in Libya, President Obama used the phrase “international community” three times. He did not say the name “Muammar Qaddafi” once. By the time it was obvious that the dictator was slaughtering his own people, vowing to “cleanse Libya house by house” and “die as a martyr,” President Obama could not muster the fortitude to denounce the Qaddafi regime by name or articulate any action that would prevent the loss of human life. With all that is at his disposal to influence the ending of this bloodshed, the president has opted to allow America to stand by silently on the sidelines and watch the massacre unfold.

The president’s response to Libya was so milquetoast, in fact, that even left-wing MSNBC host Chris Matthews was left longing for a Reagan-esque “evil empire” moment. Even liberal commentator Eugene Robinson was moved to call for U.S. action in his recent column. The tone of the president’s remarks exhibited a bizarre disconnect as well. Notwithstanding the president’s great faith in the opinion of the “international community,” a despot like Qaddafi, who speaks earnestly in terms of political cleansing and martyrdom, surely cannot be rhetorically coerced to end his rampage, and he clearly is not sensitive — to say the least — about the feelings of the “international community.”

But the Obama administration is in the grips of a teachable moment. Since taking office, Obama’s goal has been to demonstrate to the world that the U.S. is a team player. To the Arab world in particular, he has sought to prove that the U.S. is not interested in exerting influence in the region, which is considered the source of Islamist discontent by the Left. This, the administration believes, will assuage anti-American sentiment and Arab belligerence, as the president has intimated over and over again in his overtures to the Muslim world. Now, we are witnessing the catastrophic repercussions of such a destructive posture: America is willing to forsake its unrivaled ability to stop monstrous violations of human rights in order to avoid offending the sensibilities of Islamo-fascists.

To be sure, the U.S. has faced similar decisions before. When a freedom-seeking revolt broke out in Hungary in October of 1956 against the U.S.S.R., the anti-communist rebel forces were led to believed the U.S. would come to their aid. In fact, this is one of the reasons the rebel Hungarians fought so successfully for so long against the Soviets. At various points, victory seemed achievable for the uprising, which would have changed the face of the entire Cold War. But President Eisenhower ultimately abandoned and betrayed the Hungarian freedom fighters — and the rebellion was savagely squashed by the Soviets. It is a regrettable and tragic chapter in Cold War history in general and in American foreign policy in particular.

One exoneration of Eisenhower’s policy that could be pointed to is his fear that an international war could have broken out over Hungary, since a nuclear Soviet Russia was a dangerous reality. For Obama, however, there is no such excuse. Numerous Muslim leaders have themselves denounced Qaddafi for the express reason that he is killing Muslims. Certainly, it is in the interest of protesters across the region that Qaddafi be held accountable, lest other autocrats get the impression that dissent can be crushed with impunity. Furthermore, Qaddafi has virtually no credibility in the international community — the Arab League, the African Union, the European Union, and the Islamic Conference have condemned his actions.

Rather, the inaction toward Libya we are seeing today is more reminiscent of the Left’s shameless reaction (or non-reaction) to the mass slaughter of the Iranian people by the Ayatollah Khomeini during the Islamic Revolution. After the pro-Western Shah of Iran (the Left’s bete-noire) was deposed, the Islamic revolutionary forces oversaw a bloody transfer of power. The silence from the Left on this massacre, which was precipitated by the Carter administration’s unconscionable undermining of the Shah’s regime, was deafening.

But what more could one really expect from the political faith? According to the leftist worldview, the U.S. is largely a pernicious force on the world stage and is the cause for the disdain that it attracts worldwide. This is Obama’s view. At this very moment in Libya, the U.S. could be intervening to support internal pro-Western (and pro-democratic) secular forces, while marginalizing the Islamist faction. Instead, the U.S. will stand by while the Libyan government kills its people, and, therefore, help fertilize the soil in which a more brutal Islamist regime will grow and replace it. This is the historical record of what leftist American administrations do in foreign policy — and we are now witness to the tragic and morbid example in Libya.

"LEAN FORWARD OR BEND OVER" ? The Liberal Socialist Obama is back doing his "Grass Roots Community Activism Campaign" . Disgusting Illegal Alien , get out of the Americans White House and go back to Kenya !!!!!!!!!

  • Amused

Condemn Gaddafi;s actions , announce sanctions , freeze Libya's assets in foreign banks .It looks like Nichole Hungerford, would like to lead an expeditionary force , and invade Libya . Or maybe a flight of US fighter jets to bombTripoli ? You know …to take out Gaddafi , and most likely kill a few protestors in the process …bu hey thaty's war – collateral damage …the end justifies the means, eh Nichole ?
All you'r doing Nichole is taking another cheap shot at people you do not like , after tossing reason and common sense out the window . But hey Nichole if we did in fact make ANOTHER foolish ILL-ADVISED move and vtake military action , when Amercan start getting killed , and the arab /muslim world gets another excuse to blame the US , you can always blame those same people yo accused of not doing enough .

    Nice game 1 ….NOT

    • BS77

So the UN wants to impose sanctions on LIbya….why not Iran, Somalia or North Korea???? In the Darfur region of Sudan, HUNDREDS of thousands of people have been killed….What has the UN done about that? One more instance of arbitrary and incomprehensible bureaucratic behavior. The UN did nothing to aid the Tibetan people when their nation was invaded and ransacked by China.

  • Amused

Insanity = doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results .Iraq/Somalia / Afghanistan ….have'nt we learned a damn thing yet ?
As far as American leaders leaving situations where dictators commit "mass slaughters " ?
Reagan did nothing to stop the Lebanese killing 10,000 christians in the 80's , Bush Sr. abandsoned the Shias in Southern Irag , The Kurds in Norther Iraq , the Kurds on the Turkish borders , or how about the 10,000 Syrians, Assad Sr. slaughtered ? BTW WHO attempted to stop the slaughter of muslims by Serbs ?
Better go study history Nichole .

    • Supreme_Galooty

How about drunken maundering, which is what you appear to have taken up?

And who the hell is "we?"

      • Amused

Certainly not you chump . Go take another hit of whatever you get off on .

  • morristhewise

Thousands of tribal leaders throughout the Middle-East are demanding their cut of the oil profits. If those demands are met, Americans will be paying 10 bucks a gallon for gas. This is a moral dilemma: Is it better to kill the tribal leaders or pay the 10 bucks?.

  • BS77

Drill baby Drill……let's get the oil, get the manufacturing…..we don't need Libya or the Saudis….let's go Team USA…..build the new energy systems….and get the gas prices down. Elect Donal Trump, Michelle Bachman….new leaders, enterprising people with experience……Let's turn this mess around!!!! Be positive. Organize for 2012!!!! Be creative. Let's get the genius of America going again. Give it the heave ho….We can do it. Throw out the worthless bureaucrats and dummies. Streamline. Industry. You know what I mean……

    • Wesley69

Sorry, BS77, it ain't gonna happen under this administration. I will explain the reason in my own post below.

  • Amused

There you go BS77 .Let the middle eastern oil producers EAT their boil . They're gonna need us anyway to feed their people. In the meantime get our brave young men and women OUT OF THE CROSS HAIRS IN THE SHOOTING GALLERY WE PUT THEM IN . Best way to get rid of our enemies oiver their is to LET THEM HAVE AT IT ., they are much better at killing each other than we are trying to kill them . And YEA !!! TRUMP FOR PRES . And YEA ! Drill Baby Drill . ____ However I must disagree about Bachman , you'll have to suggest someone with atleast HALF-A-BRAIN , and not one step away from the looney bin .Bachman's got the intelligence of a rock , on her best day ………Sorry but seeing is believing .

    • BS77

You may be right about Bachman, I have no idea….I am just throwing some ideas out there…some may stick to the wall, some not. I want to see America doing better, …….more manufacturing, a better trade position….less debt and deficits….more control on the border….better energy systems…..more of our own oil, gas and coal…..I am fried on the chronic Depression like mess our banks, real estate and businesses are in….let's turn this thing around as a country….that's why everyone will have think about cooperation …the unions, the private businesses, government to plan accordingly and find the best solutions to these enormous economic and social challenges.

      • BS77

The USA has enormous technical resources and many brilliant people who will help bring this nation back to prosperity. Solar, geothermal, wind and conservation will go a long way to help make the transition from dependence on foreign oil, to complete energy independence. We have huge quantities of coal and the technology to use it more cleanly than ever. Go team USA!!!!

        • Wesley69

While I agree with you totally about what we need to do, I say Obama is happy with the way things are. Think of the money that transfers out of the US to other countries in the world. While the US gets more dependent, it becomes weaker. That is the goal of this administration's policies. I will explain further in my own posting as ways down.

"Amused" is a TROLL – overuse of capitals & punctuation marks scream at whoever disagrees with his rant.

Disturbing is that BHO's Exe Branch continues his "domestic agenda power-grab/control of media/Internet" with unconstitutional "FCC Secretarial Orders" & EPA to block oil/natural gas production inland & create " nightmares" for Gulf Oil Co's trying to acquire "new" licenses to put 250,000 people back to work ASAP. In the meantime, BHO recently sent billions to Mexico to develop Gulf Oil Drilling. Why?

  • JudyBeth

BHO's Adm's so busy taking control of USA citizens' lives that we see he's completely inept & morally bankrupt & hasn't a clue to deal with MidEast or with "despot" Qadaffi destroying his own countrymen. Shameful.
BHO deserted EuroNuclearDefenseShield & left our few allies open to attacks by enemies of freedom. We've already witnessed the deteoriation of any credibility BHO Adm has on "foreign affairs". What BHO says/does any day in any given situation is "suspect" in American citizens' minds & indeed in the World. Saying/doing nothing is worse=no plan, no solution, no hope… insecurity.

  • Amused

Ahhh yes , use of capitals….the sure sign of a "troll " . Boy Judy , you sure are smart . But apparently NOT smart enough to see the folly of military action on the part of the US in Libya , but hey you dont have to worry , you're an armchair General .Funny how those likeminded folks [like you ] choose to bring up ba host of different issues , and then false accusation against me , whilst avoiding the actual content of the discussion . So what is it yyou're attempting to discuss Judybeth ? Are we talking about Libya , or your obvious distaste of anything Obama ? In the real world , there is NOTHING Obama can do , nor any other previous Pres. regarding Libya , that would make any sense , other than to leave , muslims rebelling against muslims to themselves , and then deal with whoever winds up prevailing . Unless of course maybe you'd like to lead US troops into Libya . Freezing assets , public condemnation or sanctions are about all the US can or should do .

    • USMCSniper

Stay the hell out of Libya as it is not worth one American soldiers life to civilize the sand n**gers, and the same for any other mideastern country unless we conduct war as the Romans did to Carthage. Our fighting men should not be used as social workers who do community services, they should be trained killers who kill people and break things. Keep it simple, Kill 'em all, there are no rematches that way.

    • Supreme_Galooty

Hey, dummy. She didn't say "use of capitals," she said "overuse of capitals." Your poor language skills identify you indeed as a not very bright human specimen, not really much of a big thing, except your proclivity for calling others stupid is insolent. Also, I know you to be a smartass, deserving of no respect save the back of one's hand.

      • Amused

back to your meds galooty, the only backhand you'll ever give is on the internet wrapped in your anonymity . DID YOU GET THAT ? STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES . And if the shoe fits one should wear it . Judybeths remark was deserving of it. But you can be her white night …lol….get a room man .

It is against the rules of the game for Gadhafi to step down leaving his supporters vulnerable to a bloodbath. He surely will step down but his supporters will remain in power. The leaders of the protest movement will be paid billions to send their followers home for a long rest. That is the way the game is played and the rules never change.

All of a sudden Gates aint so stupid afterall –
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates bluntly told an audience of West Point cadets on Friday that it would be unwise for the United States to ever fight another war like Iraq or Afghanistan, and that the chances of carrying out a change of government in that fashion again were slim.

“In my opinion, any future defense secretary who advises the president to again send a big American land army into Asia or into the Middle East or Africa should ‘have his head examined,’ as General MacArthur so delicately put it,” Mr. Gates told an assembly of Army cadets here.

    Hi Nichole,

I think you can perfectly explain Obama's reaction based on D'Souza's book: he's an anti-colonialist. American involvement – much involvement, anyway – would be 'colonialist' in nature. Hence he believes they should take care of themselves. Khadaffi is an evil bastard, but he's a Libyan evil bastard. And so he can get away with a lot.

Until the pressure on Obama increases too much, as is the case in recent days, and he understands he has to speak out because it'll cost him respect and, especially, votes.

    • Wesley69

Finally, a blogger who thinks Obama is an anti-colonial. I am no longer alone.

  • Watchman

This countries Presidents have been taking us in the wrong direction for a long time BUT, THIS PRESIDENT I feel will be the one that pushes us over the edge. I will throw a party if he were to (I can't say die) "EXPIRE". He has done more damage to our country from within AND the world than any other President or government official since we became a country.
I strongly believe he is NOT eligible to be President and I believe he IS a muslim. I pray that he will be impeached.

  • http://endofwesternmorality.blogspot.com DArtagnan1

Obama not doing enough? Absurd. For those who have historical myopia, he's already pretty much followed GW Bush's foreign policies of engaging in Middle East wars – in fact Obama expanded the wars over there in terms of troops and drone attacks. It's amazing how FrontPage continues to put forth ridiculous uninformed pieces like this, well actually not, considering it's being run by an addled fool who once had an epiphany and decided there was more money in this business by going right.

  • geez

Is this some insight from our President into what he calls collective salvation? You ignore and turn your back on the slaughter of human beings because if you stand up to a dictator it might make them go off the deep end? How much deeper can it get? If you watch someone commit crimes against humanity and you have the means to stop it but decide to do nothing (or begin sanctions), are you guilty of the crime yourself? I thought the President of the United States was suppose to be a leader, this man has no moral compass or backbone. I guess he's waiting for his orders from the UN.

    • Amused

Well geez , pack your bags and get thee over to Libya , lest you be accused of watching someone commit crime , and doing nothing . [ I guess you blogging about it fullfills your moral obligation huh ? Is the Pres . IGNORING the situation as you allege ? Ever since the invention of transcontinental communications , Presidents have been knowledgable of slaughter occurring around the globe , how many had they intervened and stopped or prevented ? China has killed countless millions of its population , but we gladly send our buisiness men there to have our goods manufactured for cheap ….where's the moral terpitude there ? Burn your flatscreen !And toss you computer – you have the means !
Yea aint 'situational ethics wonderfull " ? So easy to pontificate ! Selectively .

  • RiverRat2U

Is the United States the worlds policeman ? Lets grab the flag, mount up, charge forth and go create another Democracy in the Middle East. I forgot Lybia does have OIL and the U.S. needs to protect the OIL Companies interest. Should we be the worlds savior and get rid of every dictator we have supported so everyone will be like us? Let the Arabs duke out their own revolts.

  • Wesley69

Why won't Obama take any stern measures to bring down Qaddafi? How does it contrast with his actions against Egypt's leader Mubarak?

To understand what is going on with Obama, one needs to understand the President‘s thinking. Obama’s policies have their roots in his Kenyan father. . In Obama’s first book, DREAMS FROM MY FATHER, he stated his father was an anti-colonialist, who viewed the US as the successor of British and French imperialism. These countries gained their wealth at the expense of the poorer nations of the world. According to Obama Sr., when the US is weakened both economically and militarily, the world will be better off because IT is the source of most of the world's problems.

Obama is determined to weaken the United States, wringing the colonial ideas and components from it. Hence his hatred for the rich, the corporations, the banks, which he feel didn’t get their wealth fairly, but on the backs of others, the poor here, but also around the world. Why did Obama support offshore drilling in Brazi, but not in the Gulf. It would transfer wealth from us to them. We provide money to drill, but the oil is theirs. A great deal … for Brazil..

His treatment of US allies – they are colonial powers and are guilty of the same crimes as the US. Israel is a creation of the imperialists, hence Obama has no sympathy for it. Think about it, when has the President ever supported a resolution condemning Israel for its settlements in the West Bank????? Yet, he demands nothing of the Palestinians. His attempt to extend Constitutional Rights to Terrorists???????? Whose side is he on????

Obama's support for the Mideast revolutions – he does not care about a democratic outcome. He wants to see the pro-Western government overthrown, as in Egypt, or at least questioning their alliance with such an ally. Why does he not take stronger actions against Libya’s dictator, despite the massacres taking place in that country? By not acting, Obama is containing the largest ROGUE STATE, the US. While it was okay to bring down an ally, it is not our right with other states. Consider this consequences with this way of thinking as applied to Iran getting nuclear weapons or keeping the Saud dynasty in power in that country!!!

How people make this a partisan argument is intellectually stunning . Even if Alfred E. Newman was Pres . , he'd do exactly what the Pres. today is doing in regards to the Libyan situation , at this late date in time , given past experience , Mr. geez' s moral platitudes notwhithstanding . Hey Mr. geez , we could carpet bomb Tripoli , hoping to get Gadaffi , and in the process kill a few thousand Libyans , would that be " moral " enough , surely the Libyans would forgive us that huh ? Just like the Iraqis , Somalis and Afghanis .Besides all that …..wasn't it the BUSH Administration that "normalized " relations with Libya AFTER the Pan -Am Lockerby incident ? Oh wait , wasn't the regime in Libya brutalizing it's population then ? Ahh the conveniennce of "partisan situational ethics " !

What would the economic ramifications be if the countries of this region create a Muslim super-state and cut off sales or drastically increase the price of oil to the West? It would destabilize the economies of the world. What of the US? Based upon his anti-colonial beliefs, Obama would use it as an opportunity to push for green energy, but, would do little to help the domestic oil and natural gas industry. They are the rich, the wealthy, the enemy. Our oil dependency would increase, the US would transfer more of our ill-gotten wealth out of the country, making our undeserved standard of living go down. Sound crazy?????? Take any policy or action by this administration and see it in the light of this anti-colonial philosophy. The dreams of the father are what is governing the US today, through the actions of his son.

I would advise reading , THE ROOTS OF OBAMA'S RAGE, by DINESH D'SOUZA. Once you read it, you can understand the whys behind almost everything Obama does.

Why would anyone expect Mr. Obama's action or inaction to be different from anything he has done before? He is trying to figure out the best way of posturing himself so that, in the end, he comes up looking good (in his very crowded mind). He has no original ideas or thoughts. Is anyone surprised at anything he does anymore?

Well I guess "ruining the country" is some sort of trend these days . And it goes beyond your most favored whipping boy . Reagan triple the deficit from the timke he took office till the time he left ….Bush did about the same amount of damage…maybe more ….seems tio me there'sd a bit more at work here than just ONE person in government .Bush started the bailouts , Obama contiunued, them yet you naysayers manage to come up with only ONE villain .
their private profits , while heavily influencing the very legislation meant to rectify their bad behavior , which btw is starting up all over again ….and no protests about that . I find it rather curious with 10% unemployment , devastated 401's ,retirement funds devastated , the housing market in the toilet , people making $29k a year shouldering the highest tax burden , rising state and national deficits , that we STILL allow the very entities that got us into this mess ,dictate the legislation that prevents them from repeating this mess .
    Who's kidding who here ?

In my view as a conservative and patroit I feel the U.S.should not intervene in the Muslim Worlds problems. They really don't want us and I for one don't want them and their stupid Shariah law. I wish Obama would totally stay out of their affairs and tend to the matters at home regardles of wheather he wins or losses with congress. The Muslims are going to fight. That is all they know. It is better to let them take care of their own dictators than for us to intervene. I am not sure Bush was right going into Iraq because he wanted to change the head of their government. That should have been an Iraqi decision and theirs alone.
