Leftist Dupes: From the Communist Brotherhood to the Muslim Brotherhood

Pages: 1 2

As President Obama encourages an immediate “transition” from Hosni Mubarak to whatever might replace him in Egypt, hope again springs eternal among the American Left. The president has made clear that he supports the presence of the Islamofascist Muslim Brotherhood in the new government, and it appears that no one in the halls of power has sense to persuade him otherwise. Even his director of national intelligence, James Clapper, “clarified” for the Congress on Thursday that the ultra-Islamic Brotherhood is “largely secular” with no “overarching agenda.” The progressive dream, clearly, is that the Muslim Brotherhood will take power and build yet another revolutionary anti-American utopia — which will ideally follow in the footsteps of other recent great Muslim Sharia paradises, from Hamas to the Ayatollah. Forgive me for not sharing in the optimism.

Instead, I thought I’d offer a walk down memory lane, recalling the Left’s pattern of judgment regarding other leading “revolutionaries” of the past 100 years. Who are some of these dictators, these monsters? Join me, if you will.

A fitting to place to start is Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin, first communist dictators of a truly Evil Empire. From the outset, numerous American “progressives” were enchanted with the “Great Experiment” in the Soviet Motherland. I could fill a book with examples. (In fact, I have.) Here, I’ll offer just a few.

Corliss Lamont, ACLU member, Columbia University professor, leading atheist/”humanist,” who embraced every leftist cause under the sun from the 1920s to the 1990s, made an early pilgrimage to Moscow. He loved what he saw, recording his observations in a book he co-authored with his wife. Probably nothing moved the Lamonts quite as much as their moment near the rotting breast of Lenin, who, by the time the Lamonts arrived in Moscow, had been dead and encased in a glass-covered box for eight years. They recorded:

Lenin’s face is strong, calm, and refined in the fundamental sense. His hand rests on a red pillow and his hands, clasped on his chest in a tranquil way, appear delicate and intellectual. The short yet forceful beard is reddish. We have to keep moving, though we want to stop and look longer and more carefully…. [I]t is not enough.

No, it was not enough; the Lamonts ached for more, and so they got in line again to revisit Lenin. They paid “homage,” “taking strength from [Lenin’s] impersonally beautiful and resolute face,” which was “perfectly natural and wholly desirable.”

In general, the Lamonts returned home to America to report the “great deal of happiness,” the “new human nature” they had discovered in communist Russia. “[T]he new world of the twentieth century is the Soviet Union,” they glowed to their progressive comrades. “And no one who is seriously interested in the progress of the human spirit can afford to miss it.”

Some “progress.” As the Lamonts wrote those words, Stalin was ramping up his forced famine, his Great Purge, and launching his annihilation of tens of millions of human spirits. Few in the USSR would miss it—the mass murder and criminality, that is.

But that wasn’t the feeling among the American Left. Among them was Corliss Lamont’s colleague, Dr. John Dewey, pillar of Columbia Teachers College, and founding father of American public education. The Bolsheviks adored Dewey, immediately translating into Russian several of Dewey’s major works before the Russian Civil War had even ended. The respect was mutual, and John Dewey couldn’t wait to make his own pilgrimage to the USSR, which he did in the summer of 1928, preceding the Lamonts’ visit. When Dewey returned, he filed a six-part series in The New Republic.

Dewey’s TNR dispatches on Russia were almost lyrical, as he waxed poetic about what he had experienced. Dewey discovered a “kind of completed transmigration of souls,” an “impression of movement, vitality, energy. The people go about as if some mighty and oppressive load had been removed, as if they were newly awakened to the consciousness of released energies.”

In Dewey’s mind, the Bolsheviks had thoroughly liberated the Russian people. “[T]the essence of the Revolution,” reported the Columbia professor, was “in its release of courage, energy and confidence in life.”

So taken was Dewey that he almost swooned: “My mind was in a whirl of new impressions in those early days in Leningrad. Readjustment was difficult, and I lived somewhat dazed.”

Dewey had been frustrated by having “heard altogether too much about Communism, about the Third International [the Comintern], too much about the Bolsheviki.” No, averred Dewey, what needed to be understood was that the Bolsheviks had ushered in not any sort of dangerous dictatorship, but, rather, a “revolution of heart and mind” and a “liberation of a people to consciousness of themselves as a determining power in the shaping of their ultimate fate.”

Dr. Dewey also praised “the orderly and safe character of life in Russia” under Stalin. Indeed, said the unflinching professor, there was no country in all of Europe in which “the external routine of life is more settled and secure.”

The faculty at Columbia was hardly the only place enchanted by Lenin and Stalin. Some of the finest minds from Britain’s literati were likewise impressed.

“I’ve never met a man more candid, fair, and honest,” marveled author H. G. Wells upon his return from a meeting with Joe Stalin in 1934, at the start of the Great Purge. “Everyone trusts him.” Wells had likewise been impressed by Vladimir Lenin, whom he called a “frank,” “refreshing,” and “amazing little man,” who had “almost persuaded me to share his vision.”

Fully persuaded was Wells’ fellow socialist, George Bernard Shaw, who piped up with an even more outrageous assessment after meeting with Stalin: “[W]e cannot afford to give ourselves moral airs when our most enterprising neighbor [the Soviet Union] … humanely and judiciously liquidates a handful of exploiters and speculators to make the world safe for honest men.”

Shaw was deadly serious; this was not sarcasm scribbled for some tasteless stage comedy.

Dr. Kengor, I read your book, "Dupes." What is most amazing is how little the rhetoric of the dupes has changed from the early '30s to present. The language, the images, the tactics, the whole ball of wax has not changed one iota. I highly recommend your book.

The most important period of Communist Brotherhood is the 80's. The KGB, the Cuban DGI, and our Communist Party USA (CPUSA) were that Brotherhood who spread their comradery to Central America. To do this, our CPUSA set up countless fronts to raise money, especially from churches, thus the beginning of Liberation Theology in Central America. Universities were used as their base of operations allowing access to the gullible and naive to recruit in their Army. These students went to Nicaragua in Construction Brigades "to help the people," but when Ortega lost the 1990 election, the Brigades and other fronts left proving that they were there instead to "help an ideology!" The U.S. Peace Council, a CPUSA front, was an affiliate of the WORLD PEACE COUNCIL, run by the KGB! We had a New Mexico Peace Council whose leader, Gerry Bradley, was also head of the NM Marxist Educators for Socialist Actiion. He denied he was a Marxist on two "peace" meetings even after I had gone to the Marxist meeting where the guest speaker, George Meyers, advocated the "overthrow of the United States through force if necessary!"

    • Steve Chavez

Part Two: The BRAINWASHED university students of the 80's KGB/CPUSA ARE THE LEADERS OF THE UNITED STATES TODAY! Many in Congress also aided in the Communist revolution in Central America and they too are today's leaders! Hillary Clinton gave funds to the 80's Marxist FMLN in El Salvador and just last year the FMLN won the Presidency through "democracy" and she was the high ranking U.S. official at the inauguration! Look how Hillary and Obama treated Manuel Zelaya of Honduras and their silence of Hugo Chavez meddling there and in other American countries! GOOGLE BARACK OBAMA SUNDIAL 1983 which is an article he wrote in the Columbia University Sundial. He wrote about, and sided with, the very KGB/CPUSA FRONTS directed by the U.S. Peace Council! CISPES was also a KGB/CPUSA front! OBAMA WAS IN PARTNERSHIP OF THESE GROUPS!!! NOW HE IS PRESIDENT! STUDY THE 80'S CPUSA and you will begin to understand how they are still running the country through the Democrat Party! Go to cpusa.org and pww.org RIGHT NOW and tell me the difference between the Communists and the Democrats! That's the real Brotherhood, "THE ENEMY WITHIN!"

Thanks to prof. Kengor and you mr. Chavez. The info you share is brillant. You obviously are not the product of public education,"a mere contrivance to mould people to be exactly alike"J.S.Mill. Or at least your education has gone well beyond the general state education of J. Dewey. The longer I live the more I know, that the most valuable ED. is self ED. Thanks again.

  • Gamaliel Isaac

I wonder if one of the motives is to avoid war. In the twisted rationalization world of the left if we praise our enemies and make them out to be better than we are than we don't have to fight them.

  • Cuban Refugee

Thank you, Dr. Kengor, for this excellent article. It takes all the strength I can gather to not physically assault the useful idiots who cross my path proudly wearing Che shirts. It is as if, with their inappropriate sartorial choice, they wish to proudly proclaim that a murdering coward is a revolutionary saint. If they would talk to a few people who witnessed Che Guevara in action at the firing squad, and read Humberto Fontova's books and yours, they might burn their shirts along with their stupidity.

    • trickyblain

      Hey! We finally agree!

One day in Santa Cruz, a straggly looking dude wearing approched me and asked for money. I held out a ten dollar bill and told him it was his if he could tell me why he admired Che. He said "who?" I said "the guy on your shirt." He muttered something about being a revolutionary. I handed him the cash out of pity.

I think it has more to do with that picture looking "cool" than anything else. Kind of like that iconic pic of Jim Morrison you see everywhere — only Morrison wasn't a cowardly murderer.

      • Cuban Refugee

Yes, Tricky, we finally agree … I am beyond shocked, but pleased. Please add whatever you had for breakfast today to your daily diet. But, seriously — now that we have come to a meeting of the minds on one subject, we can try to be the lion and the lamb, and hope that our rapidly falling world will benefit from the serenity of the peace in our hearts. My wish for you is that you experience the fullness of the Love that you are — then, we truly will be one.

In this harried world folks digest snippets. I am sure Attilla the Hun was a charming man but what is indisputable was the fact that he murdered his family members in order to attain the leadership position. This type of behavior is not a "slippery slope" but rather it is a bad person jumping in the direction of Hades. Because some uneducated person likes an appearance for marketing or a mystique might exist around an activist does not mean we should sit quietly and allow new generations to treat them as heroes worthy of emulation. Good article.

The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend a
personal God and avoid dogma and theology.Covering both the natural
and the spiritual,it should be based on a religious sense arising from
the experience of all things natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity.
Buddism answers this description. If there is any religion that ould cope
with modern scientific needs it would be Buddism. Albert Einstein.

    • Stu in SDGO

What nonsense! Have you ever been to a Buddhist temple? A friend of mine took me to one in Taipei a couple of years ago. The place was nothing but a commercial enterprise run by the "monks." Two examples: a fake tree that contained ornaments that were monetary pledges/contributions to the temple, with admonitions to "donate to achieve internal peace, etc." One purchased chances to pick sticks from a large urn; the sticks contained fortunes, and if one didn't like one's fortune, more chances could be bought until a good one was picked. And then there was the bank-teller row that collected public donations right in the "temple." Absurd and ridiculous to nominate Buddhism as a "cosmic religion."

    • RJFNY

Einstein was a scientist, not a political leader. People need more than science. Without a personal god can there be god given personal liberty. Or would we not replace our faith in a personal god by putting it in the impersonal state. Totalitarianism requires this. Therefore I choose the god of our fathers because I love liberty.

  • BLJ

What these morons don't realize is that the Castros, Che's, Lenin's, Muslim Brotherhood, etc that they support would gladly imprision or kill them if given the chance.

    • topperj

I don't think that fazes them in the least. They have a death wish. Beck has played some amazing clips of these useful idiots extolling totalitarianism. Some great clips of Shaw are bone chilling.

In case you have not noticed Obama has gotten his way. So Far.
Egypt indeed needed to change its leadership and by all accounts we should stay out of it. Obama let it be known that he wished it to be NOW. Knowing in a vacuum there will be anarchy. Are his hopes that the Muslim Brotherhood will fill the vacuum? Obama is more than happy to use one or the other. Either the progressive new one world order or radical Muslim Caliphates will benefit his ideology. The end result is, no matter whom the winner is, it will bring about the same end game! The destruction of Israel and the free enterprise way of American life are both at stake. I saw this long ago and in a letter I thanked my Jewish brothers and sisters. I did so in a letter I addressed to my first girlfriend knowing she belongs to a Socialist community of Jews in the Bronx, NY. And wanting to be a part of history, she voted for Obama. Her love of Socialism far outweighs her love of country or Israel. In my opinion Socialism and religion are natural enemies therefore I believe she has no religion…… http://www.therepublicrevealed.com/forums/index.p

Today, our society remains enthralled by Cultural Marxism, which is strangling our freedom, and threatening our future. This threat to our culture and way of life accelerated to a deadly speed with the establishment, in 1933 at Columbia University, of the Institute for Social Research, originally called "The Institute for Marxism." This institution became known as the Frankfort School. The destructive nature of the Frankfort School, founded in New York after it's theoreticians fled there from Frankfort, Germany when Hitler came to power, is obvious from even a cursory examination of its primary texts. The four horsemen of the school were music critic Theodor Adorno, psychologist Erich Fromm, sociologist Wilhelm Reich and professor Herbert Marcuse. Their ideas, echoing through the halls of academia are still dominate in liberals today.

  • AWT

Sadly, I have read countless articles which have covered the same ground.

The question that needs to be posed is WHY is the Left so supportive of these regimes. The Left is not stupid and gullible, and is often highly educated and intelligent. They are fully aware of the history of these regimes.

There clearly is an objective in play on the part of the Left which we do not understand and cannot accept. What is it?

    • Guest

They're sado-masochists who like psychological transvestites like to dress up in the guise of do-gooders and preen.

    • RJFNY

It's pragmatism over principle. The left accepts no limit on gov't power, at least not when the left is in charge. They either fail to see this leaves the door wide open to tyrants and despots or that is their aim. Dictatorship is efficient. W. Wilson wrote this and advocated for a gov't. whose power was" fully invested in some one person….." in a 1906 paper on "leadership and the presidency". They are also fundamentally dishonest with hidden agendas and the irritating habit of redefining terms to fit their ends. Shall I continue? I ask rhetorically.

TROUBLE IN CASTRO'S CUBA! Arrests and torture!

Protests in Egypt Spark Fears in Cuba Over Growing Internet Opposition Movements
    By Serafin Gomez

    Published February 11, 2011 | FoxNews.com

Peering at the upheaval thousands of miles away in Egypt, the Cuban government is increasingly concerned about a burgeoning opposition movement growing through the Internet.

As a result, the Castro regime has intensified its crackdown on dissident groups in an attempt to ensure that what is happening in Cairo will not happen in Havana, according to some observers.

"We do see instances of repression starting since the Egyptian upheaval. There have been brutal beatings on dissidents," said Susel Perez, of the Cuba Transition Project, at the University of Miami. " It is a direct sign from the Cuban government that this is something that will not be tolerated on the island."

In a 53-minute video leaked last week, a Cuban counter-intelligence staffer warned an audience of Castro government officials that pro-Democracy organizers in Cuba and the United States were using social media, like Facebook and Twitter, to foment a political uprising in the island nation.

    • Steve Chavez

      Part Two from Foxnews.com
"The technology in itself is not a threat, but the threat is what the people who use the technology can do with it," the lecturer said in the video, identified by the Miami Herald as 38-year-old Eduardo Fontes-Suarez. "The Internet is a battlefield."

The video lecture was purportedly shot over the summer, months before the situation exploded in Egypt. The impetus behind the unrest was a Facebook page created to honor a young Egyptian man allegedly murdered by corrupt police.

During the lecture, Fontes-Suarez directly blamed the U.S. government for coordinating the new Internet push and says Cuban bloggers like Yoani Sanchez — creator of "Generacion Y," a blog critical of the Cuban regime — are part of a U.S. campaign to overthrow the Castro government.

"A network of mercenaries is being organized that are not like the traditional counter revolution," Fontes-Suarez said. "We are talking about young people. Young people who hang out with our children."

Obama just made remarks and could not bring himself to discourage extremism or to give rights to women in Egypt. I guess our $1.5B annual contribution does not give us the right to even nudge their direction according to that bozo.

    • Guest

Why should the 1.5 B continue? The deal was with Mubarak who gave pretty good value for money, signing and keeping a peace with Israel, and keeping a lid on the Muslim Brotherhood and other Muslim extremists. Obama just helped turf him. What's the most unamerican POTUS ever going to buy in Egypt now for our 1.5B? Hint, it will be of no use to Americans and probably bad for them.

It's not only the totalitarian dictatorships of the world the left supports. Think of the progressives in Hollywood and the trash they get behind – Mumia, Roman Polanski, Charlie Sheen, Tookie, Woody Allen, Obama, etc… the list goes on and on.

It says so much about the values and gullibility of the far left in America that they would support druggies, incestual relationships, pedophiles, liars and murderers. Not only are they stupid and naive but this is proof of their "hate America" first attitude and lack of morals.

;;Most important is how the Egyptian masses feel about things. Why not take a poll? Well the Pew polling organization did take such a poll in June 2010. I don't remember the exact results but heavy majorities were in favor of Shariah law; cutting off of hands' death for apostasy and so on. The pollsters should have asked them if they have ever heard of Sayyid Qutb. He is revered by the Muslim Brotherhood. He came here on a scholarship in l948. He was horrified by American society. He saw some women in Denver, I think, gyrating to the tune of "Baby, It's cold outside". He returned to Egypt, joined the Muslim Brotherhood in a snit and was a pain in the a until Nasser killed him./ Had helicopters broadcasted "Baby, It's Cold Outside" to the masses in Tahrir Square perhaps they would have dispersed.

Progressives like Woodrow Wilson, George Bernard Shaw, H.G Well, and FDR, to name a few, embraced Fascism as well. They were all absolutely wild about Mussolini and Hitler. History proves they were taken in by these dictators as well. Wilson pushed America to get into WWI, because he felt it would speed this Nation into a Social Fascist government. FDR's New Deal, had all the ear marks of Fascism. Isn't history fascinating? Too bad I didn't learn it in my Progressive left public school. But what can you say about a school system set up by John Dewy, another Fascist.
