Fooling Kristof

Pages: 1 2

Ace New York Times pundit Nicholas Kristof recently had dinner in the Cairo home of some Muslim Brotherhood members, and he had a wonderful time. And from this experience, there is something he wants you and the world to know: Muslim Brotherhood rule in Egypt, and the Brotherhood in general, is nothing to be concerned about.

Kristof’s touchingly naïve and ignorant column raises the question once again of how such an uninformed and easily misled analyst could enjoy so much respect among the nation’s intellectual elites – and the answer, as with all such mediocrities, is that they retail politically correct opinions, and so rise to the top regardless of the poor quality of their work. In this case, Kristof is pushing the theme that the Muslim Brotherhood is “moderate” – an idea in fashion today in the mainstream media, however ridiculous it may be.

Kristof marvels that his hostess, a 24-year-old woman named Sondos Asem, “speaks perfect English, is writing a master’s thesis on social media, and helps run the Brotherhood’s English-language Twitter feed, @Ikhwanweb.” Kristof warns that “the Brotherhood is far more complex than the caricature that scares many Americans” – but does he really think that because the Brotherhood employs a young woman who speaks perfect English and works in social media that somehow they don’t intend to impose the oppressive aspects of Sharia upon Egypt?

Sondos Asem specifically denies that the Brotherhood will do so regarding Sharia’s oppression of women: “It’s a big misconception that the Muslim Brotherhood marginalizes women. Fifty percent of the Brotherhood are women.” She dismisses the suggestion that the Brotherhood might bring Sharia laws regarding women to Egypt, making it resemble Saudi Arabia, Iran or Afghanistan. Egypt, she says, is “religiously very moderate,” and hence much more likely to follow Turkey’s model.

Unfortunately for Asem, and Kristof, Turkey is not presently a Sharia state, although Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is doing all he can to change that. Its religious moderation is not the product of a different model of Sharia from that implemented in Saudi Arabia and Iran, but from no Sharia at all. If Egypt adopts Sharia, as the Muslim Brotherhood wishes it to do, the only Sharia model available to it are those of Saudi Arabia and Iran, which implement classic provisions of Islamic law’s treatment of women that have been in place for centuries and are not disputed in any significant way by any sect or school of Islamic law.

Kristof was willfully blinded by a Muslim woman spokesperson. Her statement "50 % of the Brotherhood are women" Is that the 50%, half ,we understand in the West, or the 50% understood in all arabic Islamic juridictions that a woman's testimony or word or value equal only 50% of a man's? (Koran2:282 or 4:11/pg 67-P.I.G. to Islam/Spencer)

Recall too that blacks made up nearly 40% of the American South before the Civil War.

      Aren't statistics great?

Unlike even our own "Arab Spring", rm, hmm, I mean the Occupy Movement, I do not recall seeing too many women in Tahrir Square, or really anywhere, protesting. Wonder why that is…

      • Bamaguje

        Really?
So what happened to all the pre-civil war southern Blacks?

        • http://visionsandprinciples.blogspot.com/ InRussetShadows

You can check out Sowell's "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" for an in-depth answer, but in short, many moved to large cities, and many moved north, up into the Northeast US, the middle Atlantic states, and into Canada. The stats, while true, are deceiving, which was his point.

Pre-War Between the States, South Carolina had a lot of blacks, because of the large plantations there. Other states, not so much (like Tennessee). But if you averaged the plantation-heavy states together with the others, then you come out with 40%. Another thing worth pointing out is that slavery was not equally distributed among whites. One in ten of whites who could own slaves, did. That means that a few people (the plantation owners) owned a lot of slaves.

          • intrcptr2

            Sort of.

My point was more denying the validity of Kristoff's hostess' point; the size of the female cohort in the Muslim Brotherhood has no effect on their policies, rather like the impact of blacks on the persistence of slavery.

Unfortunately, I've gone and run into yet another smart guy, who oddly can't make such connections and thus has to resort to psuedo-snark by asking such a pointless question.

        • intrcptr2

          They became post-war Southern blacks.

  • Chezwick_Mac

Interesting how the more radical the Muslim world becomes, the further we in the West move the bar to define radical. If the MB is considered "moderate" today, no doubt tomorrow we'll be celebrating stonings and amputations as post-modern!

Don't you just love the smiles all around? How is it that he was hosted by the M.B. without knowing their background? How did he come by the invitation? Why was he invited?
These people act as if we don't see the stage production they present to us. They usher out some sweet talking woman and an accommodating Useful Idiot to tout the blessings of the wonderful M.B. as if that would change their charter.
They CANNOT back off as their religion tells them to make Islam dominant over the earth. Sounds like a set up of a conqueror rather than a cooperator. We can never trust them OR the fools they parade before us with smiles. THIS will be a fight to the end.

    • intrcptr2

Interesting just how history repeats itself. Wasn't John captaining a swift boat at pretty much the same time another American was cozying up to foreign leaders, while in a war with the US, bent on violence and murder, posing all smiles for the cameras?

Kerry also met with the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese negotiators in Paris to undermine Kissinger's attempt to end the war. Crooked Willy participated in anti-war and anti-U.S. demonstrations in Moscow and London. Teddy Kennedy conspired with the Kremlin to defeat Reagan in 1984 and undermine his foreign policy with the Soviets. The Democrat Congress unilaterally abrogated the Paris Peace Accords and stopped all aid to our South Vietnamese allies in 1974, thereby triggering the domino effect that Eisenhower had predicted – and been pilloried for – when Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia all fell within a month of each other into what we now refer to as Boat People, reeducation camps, and the Killing Fields. The Democrat Congress abrogated Reagan's foreign policy in Central America and effectively ended all native resistance to the Soviet and Cuban takeover of Nicaragua. So, yeah, I don't think this treason by Kerry is the Democrats' first rodeo.

I had actually forgotten about his own Congressional junkets…

I was thinking more of Hanoi Jane's visits.

And this is the head knocker of the piece of used toilet paper New Yorkers and New

    CENSOR :
IS THIS ALSO "POLITICALLY INCORRECT" ??????

Nicholas Kristallnacht should get a Pulitzer Prize for his deluded fiction in the face of transparent, obvious, immutable facts, just like his New York Times predecessor Walter Duranty who lied to the world that Stalin was not systematically starving millions in the Ukraine, and like his New York Times predecessor Herbert Matthews who lied about the communist revolutionary leader Fidel Castro being a “small ‘d’” democrat championing freedom and democracy, with nary a socialist thought in his head.

For obsequious credulity worthy of that storied lineage, I submit that Nicholas Kristallnacht is truly worthy of his own venal Pulitzer.

    • fmobler

      Eagle,

Thanks for the reminder that this is not a anomaly. The NYT has nearly century of mendacity in its attempts at myth making about our enemies.

I would add Friedman to your list. He goes to China and comes back saying he wishes we could act like China … just long enough to sort out our economy.

It seems like every dictator in the world knows the NYT's strategy: Invite one of their marquee names, show him a good time, get a good report. If you can cook up a claim that the West 'misunderstands' you, so much the better. It's cheap and effective.

  • mrbean

Wait until Egypt becomes an Islamic theocracy under sharia law like Iran.

  • Marty

Ah, happy in dhimmitude and self-delusion. One can only wonder if there is anyone remaining at The New York Times who has any connection with reality. As for "religiously moderate," this is an inappropriate phrase to use in connection with the muslim brotherhood or islam in general. After considering the ikhwan's founders, history, and ideology, the movement is moderate compared to what? This is the egyptian charm offensive and it is aimed at gullible fools who work at and read The New York Times.

    • StephenD

Well, they are "moderate" in that they will only cut off your hand instead of your head; they'll only make women cover instead of mutilating them; they'll only forbid drink and not music…yet.

    • http://visionsandprinciples.blogspot.com/ InRussetShadows

If it's any consolation, the NYT just lost their CEO and their stock price is in the toilet. Kristof may not have a place to work much longer.

  • effemall

Kristof is a total idiot and to read him or read about him is a wasteful folly. Publishers who publish his drivel deserve to go bankrupt which eventually they will.

Note the Obama administration on Mohammedanism. The Fort Hood massacre by a Mohammedan who shouted "Allahu Akbar" while killing 12 army people, is now called an event of "workplace violence." The Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has as her close advisor, with access to security information, Huma Abedin (wife of Anthony Weiner), whose family is of the Muslim Brotherhood.

  • LindaRivera

Obama made a special point of inviting his BIG favorites, the Muslim Brotherhood, to his speech in Cairo. Behind the scenes, America worked to oust U.S. ally, moderate Mubarak, and bring to power the Muslim Brotherhood whose stated goal is global Islamic conquest and the DESTRUCTION of civilization.

28 Jan 2011. The Telegraph: Egypt protests: America’s secret backing for rebel leaders behind uprising. The American government secretly backed leading figures behind the Egyptian uprising who have been planning “regime change” for the past three years, The Daily Telegraph has learned. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaa

One might say that in sharing dinner in the home of Sondos Asem, Mr. Kristof was exposed to a Potemkin Muslim household. And, like all those driven by sentimentalized politics, he fell for it.

Stage-managed propaganda, and the willing foolish. It's as simple as that.

  • WilliamJamesWard

One must admire the way Muslim women are prepared in their dress to dry
the dishes before they are even washed or could I be mistaken, just a trick of
slippery Islamist slight of head……………………….nice picture, the caption should
read "yes you got me, I didn't cook any of this, it's take out from the local Jewish
    delli"……………………………………………………………………………..William

  • ObamaYoMoma

Sorry to say that Nicholas Kristof isn't any less gullible and mentally incompetent than our State Department, the White House, the National Intelligence Directorate, etc., etc., etc.

    • WilliamJamesWard

I am sure they are dutifully and fervently applauding his article and Obamaesque
talking approach to making nice with the really not so nice……………..William

  • Anamah

No doubt fFooling Kristof is also an useful idiot…

  • Ron Carnine

Ask the Copts just how moderate the Muslim Brotherhood is. As a career law enforcement officer I can tell you that murderers and thieves have a family side. They love their children, welcome guests into their homes and are sometimes warm and funny. But there is a dark side as well. They can steal your property, pull out a gun and shoot you dead and show absolutely no remorse. I have always been intrigued by this "other side". The Copts know this other side, they are the experts on them. Before you believe that the Brotherhood is moderate, remember all criminals have "the other side".

  • Jack Hammer

It's really hard for me to believe that Kristof is such a dope. Might he be deliberately obfuscating for some reason? The mind boggles.

Re Egypt's resorts, realizing their economic importance in a state with great economic difficulties, the government might maintain the high-end tourist resorts as sort of a free zone, where alcohol and bikinis are permitted for the infidels. Even so, I wouldn't be inclined to visit. Sad state of affairs in Egypt.
