The Inquisition of Melanie Phillips

Pages: 1 2

Last week British columnist Melanie Phillips wrote a blogpost at the Spectator entitled “Armchair barbarism,” discussing the brutal jihad murders of the Fogel family in Israel. Her references to the “moral depravity” of the Arab “savages” who committed the crime have gotten her in hot water with Britain’s hyper-PC Press Complaints Commission, which has launched an investigation.

Phillips is being investigated, ironically enough, for writing that “the moral depravity of the Arabs,” as she chose to term the murderers of the Fogels and those in Gaza who celebrated those murders, “is finding a grotesque echo in the moral bankruptcy and worse of the British and American ‘liberal’ media.” And as if on cue, the watchdog organization in Britain of that liberal media swooped down upon her.

The irony was compounded by a further statement in Phillips’ column: “Overwhelmingly, the media have either ignored or downplayed the atrocity – or worse, effectively blamed the victims for bringing it on themselves, describing them as ‘hard-line settlers’ or extremists.” In this case, however, they were not blaming the victim, but blaming the columnist who spoke forthrightly about the nature of the murderers.

After the column was published, the P.C. Commission received two complaints about it: one from Engage, a group that is dedicated to advancing Muslim participation in British society, and from one of Britain’s most prominent Muslim leaders, Inayat Bunglawala, the chairman of Muslims4UK. Bunglawala fumed that Phillips’ words “went far beyond just denouncing the killings. It was a far more generalised racist outburst against Arabs as a whole.”

Ignoring the fact that Arab Muslims commit jihad terror attacks on a virtually daily basis, and that there is no equivalent among Jews, Bunglawala claimed that “if you insert the word ‘Jew’ or ‘Jewish’ where she has referred to Arabs then I am sure she would have no doubt that those words would be antisemitic. Just as she abhors antisemitism it is important that she maintains the same vigorous anti-racist stance against Arabs. It is just unacceptable to use that kind of language.”

give her a medal for saying things as they are. and israel should give the enemy the lebanese treatment. the enemy will be so busy rebuilding every piece of infrastructure that they will not have the time or energy to fight!

The Arabs are the scumbags of society and will land up with their disgusting religion that calls for the killing of Jews and others on the dustbin heap of history like the Nazis, like the Communists, like the Stalinists, like the Romans, like all those that tried to destroy the Jews!

  • WhereIsYourSoul

You do realize that the perps haven't been caught right? Love how you all jump to conclusions it's an Arab, and run with that. Just as likely it was a settler trying to whip up the conflict. And succeeding.

  • Redhawk

There is also I believe a bit about turning the other cheek. Unfortunately these arab filth see that as a weakness not a virtue.

If we do not speak out against them and loudly, if we do not retaliate, they will simply continue as they are. They will see our silence as acceptance of their disgusting practices.

Islam is WRONG in so many ways. WE have to loudly and definatively reject the idea that sharia law is an acceptable alternative in a modern civilised society. The brutality that is Islam has not and will never change neither will its followers. There is no such thing as a moderate moslem. They either follow the quran etc. totally or they are not muslims. We should really stop playing about with these people. When Hitler tried to conquer the world we declared war and kicked his arse. Why are we pussy footing around with these moon and meteorite worshipping lunatics. They bombed us, Spain the US, Israel (daily) and Australians in Bali and still we tolerate their existance. Pakistan already has Nukes, pretty soon Iran will have them too if they don't already imagine a suicide bomber with on of those. We have to Stop pissing about and blow Mecca and Medina off the face of the planet as a first step and play it as required from there.

  • Georgia_L

Okay, here is the kind of thing that features regular in various quality UK newspapers. The kind of thing you NEVER see make the light of day in the USA:

Is Gideon Levy the most hated man in Israel or just the most heroic? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-ea

Johann Hari: Israel is suppressing a secret it must face http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators

This is why Melanie Phillips is frothing at the mouth liked a rabid dog. It's because the UK allows journalists to actually reports the facts about Israeli occupation.

Might also find this interesting (from Israeli newspaper Haaretx). Of course you'll all say it's rubbish, but history isn't going to prove you wrong:

Israel's dissidents are saving the country http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/opinion/isra

    • Georgia_L

Might I say – history IS going to prove you wrong. You thought I wasn't supporting Melanie Phillips for a minute, didn't you??!!!

    • worried

Ha-Aretz is a leftist communist newspaper that competes on who writes the worse twist on the truth in Israel. They should all be treated like traitors! Freedom of speech does not include treason!

  • Georgia_L

I know of at least one case where Melanie Philips suggested someone should be prosecuted for incitement to racial hatred against Jews. Read this in full for details: http://www.melaniephillips.com/diary/archives/001

So Melanie Philips wants freedom of speech to racially vilify Arabs, but wants to prosecute someone who racially vilifies Jews. The choice is hers. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

    • Steeloak

Sure you can Georgia. The difference is that David Irving was spreading race hatred against jews based on lies, while Melanie points out the truth about Islam and Muslim culture, which in many cases is identical to Arabs and Arab culture. In both cases, the facts are easily obtained and the lies easily exposed.
However, I do disagree with her point, speech should never be the criteria for criminal action. I want every Radical Islamist, Communist, Global Warming Alarmist, etc. To be able to have their say in public. That is the best way to expose their silly ideas and destroy them in the marketplace of ideas. I draw the line at action – start attacking people, plotting to overthrow the government, or burn someone's SUV and you belong in prison.
Nice try, but as we say here in Texas – "That dog don't hunt"

  • Steve

The best manifestion of the deadly retrovirus of Leftistism using Islam as a means to kill the host nation in the USA is the run up to the Ft. Hood murderers and subsequent "offical" report.

Just want to say how refreshing it is to read so many amazing comments (except for yours Norm) .Writing from here in Israel, with firsthand experience of suicide bombings and arab terror. And Norm, you must have not been in the West Bank the day they were handing out candy to celebrate the murders, otherwise, you might have reconsidered your position. On second thought, maybe you would have been the one passing out the candy!
Either way, I have been reading too many comments lately based on BS, from people just feeding on the "poor Palestinian" lies.
Thank you all for putting the truth out there and letting it be known. And putting people down who use Baruch Goldstein as a justification for all Palestinian attacks. Or Rachel Corrie as another excuse for murder of innocent Israelis. Her death was tragic, but she did (ahem) throw herself in front of a moving bulldozer, and whether or not he saw her in time is disputed. That family in Itamar had the "bulldozer" sneak into their window in middle of the night to get them,. So really, these comparisons are idiotic.

    • Georgia_L

Pull your thug West Bank settlers into line Cooks. Everyone in the world except Americans have some knowledge of what they're doing. Make your government stop these thugs because they are incitement for people the world over to hate Israel. Trust me on this – you keep letting those settlers doing what they do, and Israel make more enemies by the day.

      • Georgia_L

And stop stealing Palestinian land. Europe is watching and knows what you're doing.

        • cooks

I disagree with you about the stealing land…..Jews had this land way before…its just how far back in history to you want to go?
And I am sure you are so damned concerned about giving all people back "their" land, I am sure you are at the forefront of the revolution on giving all the native americans back their land/? Everyone should just pack up and go back to whatever countries they came from right?
And I am sure you are also an advocate for the Jews to get back their stolen land in The arab countries, Iran, Iraq, Yeman, Tunisia, etc…
          Youre a hypocrite!
You are only anti-Israel because thats what is the trend, and you only follow the pack. If you only put some thought into it, instead of feeding into propaganda, maybe you would change your mind.
Plus, you would think after many, major terrorists bombings in countries all over the world people would finally WAKE UP AND SEE WHAT WE DEAL WITH IN ISRAEL EVERY SINGLE DAY!
And its sweet that youre defending them, but dont forget, that you are an infidel too, so they wouldnt spare either.
And on side note, this is to all the "liberal" pro palestine people out there…
Islam goes against everything that you fight for..WOMENS RIGHTS, GAY RIGHTS, ABORTION RIGHTS, ETC
You are defending a civilization that murders and oppresses the very people and causes you fight for!

          • Georgia_L

You can't use past human rights abuses and atrocities to justify ones that Israel is committing right NOW and under our noses. The land was stolen from the natives in places like Australia and the USA some 200 or more years ago. Yes these were shocking injustices of the highest order, but we can't go back and undo the wrongs of the past regardless of whether we want to or not.

Israel is stealing more and more Palestinian land in the West Bank NOW. Not 200 years ago, not 500 years ago – NOW. Are you aware that around 40% of the West Bank is now off limits to Palestinians and only accessible by Jews? It is PALESTINIAN land, not your land, and you are stealing it. Period. What kind of society are you running? What kind of thieving state are you running? Has your nation no shame or are Israelis so convinced of their own racial and religious superiority that they're happily heading towards a fully-fledged neo-Nazi regime?

If you think the atrocities of a few hundred years ago make anything fair game today, I suppose you also think it's fine to bring back torture chambers (ah, but then again, Israel does use torture and targeted assassinations – I almost forgot). And I suppose you wouldn't have any complaints if a military aggressor came in tomorrow and stole Israel off YOU by force – it's justified, of course, because 200 or 300 years Australia and the USA were taken by force.

Regarding terror bombings in Israel, I was there myself again last month and I was certainly a little edgy around cafes and so on (especially in Jerusalem). I know you live with the threat of terror attacks and I know this must have a tremendous impact on the national psyche, but you have your own government to thank for that. Land stealing, assassination of political opponents, denying Palestinians the right to protest peacefully by showering them with tear gas and rubber bullets, denying Palestinians pretty much all civil rights – that is terrorism. The state of Israel has gotten where it is today by terror – FACT. So what makes Israel think it can be the terrorist bully boy and no-one else can ever hit back. It's tragic for any Israeli civilian, but the blame lies squarely with people like butcher Ariel Sharon, Netanyahu and that Hitler figure you call a foreign minister – the demonic Avigdor Lieberman.

I am not mindlessly running with the left-wing pack. In fact many of my "leftist" friends call me "right-wing" because I have an eclectic, case-by-case collection of opinions – many of which are at odds with standard leftist discourse. So you are completely wrong on that count (but in fairness to you, I understand why you'd think that).

I understand your point about the evident contradictions in the standard leftist discourse – fighting for the rights of people who, as you say, may hold religious and political views completely at odds with other elements of "liberal" thinking. I do understand your point, honestly I do, and it's something I've raised with friends of many occasions. It's dangerous to romanticise any culture too much, as there are likely to be hidden nasties. But this in no way makes it right for Israel to be a nation of land thieves and human rights abusers.

This site may be to your liking because these people are clearly a product of the pro-Zionist lobby groups which virtually control USA media. Plus Americans, on average, know very little about international affairs compared to people in Europe. Not so here in the UK, and certainly not so in other parts of Europe. We know what Israel is doing, and we're massively frustrated that our governments go along with it . The mood has changed – not due to leftist trends but because the facts on the ground in the West Bank and Gaza have gradually been made available to the public and suddenly we realise who the terrorist really is.

This is not a personal attack on you so please don't take it that way. It's attack on the state of Israel and the mentality that your leaders are breeding. With the exception of the USA, Israel has now run out of friends. Other governments are still going along with it all, but this is going to change. If Israel doesn't change from inside and reverse its current hideous policies, the change is going to be forced on you from outside. It's only a matter of time.

          • Georgia_L

PS And regarding all this stuff about Jews being in the land 2,000 years ago and therefore also having a right to the West Bank – this is a ridiculous argument. My ancestors might have lived on the site of the Eiffel Tower 2,000 years ago – it doesn't mean I can put a claim on the Eiffel Tower now. I cannot believe Israelis even dream to employ such a nonsensical argument.

          • Georgia_L

And on re-reading my first post to you above, I realise it does indeed sound like a personal attack. I apologise for that. That was not my intention but I understand why you'd take it that way. My gripe is not with you personally but with the state of Israel.

A final word – please do get your thug settlers under control. You have no idea how these disgusting individuals look to the outside world and what a PR disaster they are for the state of Israel.

          • MixMChess

Jews are indigenous to the land and maintained a CONTINUOUS presence for over 3,000 years according to archeological and historical evidence. The conquest by Rome resulted in only a portion of the population being exiled (mostly from Jerusalem). Jews flourished for centuries in other Jewish towns, such as Yavne, Rafah, Gaza, Ashkelon, Jaffa and Caesarea.

Even after the Jewish population was decimated by the Crusaders in the 12th century AD, it rebounded in the next centuries and grew as Jews returned in waves of immigration and settled in Safed, Jerusalem, Tiberius and Hebron.

Jews had been migrating to Israel for nearly two millenia, the Zionists of the 19th century were merely a part of this age-old pattern. It is clear that Jews had historical and legal rights running with the land going back to ancient times.

Even when Israel was being reestablished in the 19th century, it was done so on vacant and tenant-free land legally purchased from willing land owners. Very few Arabs were ever dispossessed of their land due to these purchases, in fact, the few cases where Arabs were forced to relocate was due to general economic conditions that had nothing to do with the Zionists.

            Learn your history.

"Israel is stealing more and more Palestinian land in the West Bank NOW."

Not at all, in fact Israel is giving more land to the Palestinians. Recall in 2005 Israel dismantled 4 settlements in the W. Bank and promised to dismantle more in any final negotiated settlement with the Palestinians.

"Are you aware that around 40% of the West Bank is now off limits to Palestinians and only accessible by Jews?"

You are a LIAR. The Palestinian Authority governs over 98% of the W. Bank. The settlements exist on less than 2% of the W. Bank, and over 85% of those settlements are municipalities or suburbs of major Israeli cities. The much larger percentages you suggested include the roads, adjacent areas and land between settlements that are unpopulated and potentially available to Arabs with proper building permits.

"It is PALESTINIAN land, not your land, and you are stealing it."

Israel has not stolen land in the W. Bank or displaced owners. The overwhelming majority of Jewish communities were built on the Green Line and on government land that was barren, rock-strewn hillside and uninhabited. In fact, 80% of the Israelis in the Territories are in communities that were built along the Green Line and did not displace the Palestinian population. Other land has been purchased legally from owners.

In fact, Palestinians have built settlements in the Territories and homes in Jerusalem, often without proper permits, at twice the rate of Israelis. According to Jeffrey Helmreich, "more than 260 new Palestinian settlements have been constructed vs. 144 new Israeli ones." For instance, "Jerusalem's Arab community received building permits for more square meters of residential construction than did the demographically similar (in terms of total numbers and family size) Jewish community between 1974 and 1995."

          • MixMChess

"I suppose you also think it's fine to bring back torture chambers (ah, but then again, Israel does use torture and targeted assassinations – I almost forgot)."

You are a LIAR Georgia. The Israeli supreme court officially banned and outlawed torture in 1999. In fact, Israel's prohibitions on the use of torture are as high, if not higher, than those commonly practiced by the United States and Western European nations even though Israel is facing a terrorist war.

In fact, many Palestinian prisoners receive free educations, courtesty of the Israeli government, and many of the complaints prisoners level against Israel are trivial.

Upon being released as part of an Israeli good-will gesture, a Palestinian prisoner jailed for the murder of 14 people unwittingly revealed both the privileges he received in Israeli prison and the general lack of concern he needed to have for his personal safety there. His principle grievance was random prison cell searches. Meanwhile, he gloats that he and 200 of his fellow inmates received a fully-subsidized education at Israel's premier universities.

As for targeted assassinations, Palestinian targeted killing of Israeli civilians is immoral. Israel's targeted killing of terrorists is moral and necessary to save innocent civilian lives. The terrorists Israel targets are armed combatants who organize, arm and direct the attacks against Israel. They are no different than military commanders and soldiers in a regular army and they have declared war on Israel. Targeting the terrorist leaders of a terrorist war is legitimate under international law and the rules of war.

Yup, and here come the antisemitic accusations – Jewish control of the government and media. Jews also rig the Oscars you know?

Of course, Saudi Arabia can more accurately be said to control media discourse on the Middle East. Its princes own large shares of media outlets throughout the world and hold a virtual monopoly on media in the Middle East.

In fact, the Western Media has been manipulated and intimidated by the Palestinians. NBC's Tel Aviv bureau chief Martin Fletcher "acknowledged that the Intifada posed a fairness problem." He noted the "Palestinians manipulated the Western media by casting themselves as David against the Israeli Goliath." And, "the whole uprising was media-oriented [...] It's really a matter of manipulation of the media. [...] We play along because we need the pictures."

I suppose giving Pomerania, Silesia and East Prussia to Poland and the Soviet Union after World War II was also stealing German land. The loss of territory is one of the traditional prices paid by an aggressor for losing a war they started. And if that is the case, then the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Golan Heights and Sinai Peninsular should now be permanently Israeli territory. But only the Golan Heights in within the current borders of Israel.

Georgia, you are so busy trying to educate us but your Freudian slip in the statement you made above shows deep down you know you are lying to yourself.

    • Georgia_L

Oh no, a few typos in that entry. Let's see what the history books say about all of this 40 years from now (when hopefully a lot of us will still be around). I already know what they'll say – you evidently don't.

Apparently in the PC world you have no right to criticize groups – racial, religious, behavioral, etc. The Islamic world is, in my view, made much worse by its religion, Islam. That includes the Palestinians.

  • John

I have discovered that generally the ones that constantly scream and rant the loudest to defend their questionable actions or positions are generally the biggest offenders. CAIR, Hamas, Hizbollah, ACLU, unions. I hardly ever see Israel defending the vast majority of it's actions. They don't have to since they generally take a defensive posture. G-d bless this woman for speaking out in what was once a friendly environment but since the Muslims have become so vocal in the UK, now quite hostile one.

  • MixMChess

It is a lie, see my other comment about the International Red Cross setting the record straight.

  • Georgia_L

MixMChess, you are the LIAR. I won't even bother to address all of your ridiculous assertions individually as you will just come back with more mendacious nonsense. Have you no shame to lie like this or otherwise completely distort well-known and well-documented facts? How long were you at Hasbara training school? Was it a 6 week course or a 6 month course? Do you think perhaps Israel should offer a new degree – the BA in Hasbara skills? Maybe even a University of Hasbara with multiple campuses including one overlooking the beach in Tel Aviv? What do you think of the idea?

Modern communiations mean that lies like yours are easily exposed here in Europe. The hasbara game has been lost here and not before time. Keep living with USA mugs who believe every lie you tell, but the rest of the world has woken up. And with USA on the brink of bankruptcy, I don't think Israel can count on its partner in crime for too much longer. Where will you turn seeing as you have no friends left anywhere else?

I will not continue dialogue with someone who has no morals like you. Cooks and I might seriously disagree, but Cooks is someone with a typical Israeli civilian understanding about the situation – something I find extremely frustating but not something I would vilify him personally for. You, on the other hand, are just a shameless liar.

I leave you with a video of a typical radical Israeli settler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irIXIy6hNc8

The mere fact you think this kind of conduct is acceptable tells any honest person everything they need to know. You have no shame and no morals.

    End of discussion.

    • SpiritOf1683

Modern communications also mean that bigoted Jew-hating ignoramuses like yourself also get exposed. Have you been vandalising any Jewish headstones lately?

      • Georgia_L

Think you can win an argument by throwing completely baseless allegations around, do you? Grow up and develop a sense of shame. Israel has violated more U.N. resolutions than any other country in history. This is fact. Go to the U.N. website and you'll see just how many resolutions Israel has violated, just how much of the West Bank is now inaccessible to Palestinians, and just how much settler violence is being directed at Palestinians (violence I have witnessed myself). Oh, but of course, you already know all of this but let me guess – you're going to tell me the U.N. consists of "bigoted Jew-hating ignoramuses" as well? And that U.N. officials go on group excursions to vandalise Jewish headstones? And I bet you even have glossy Israeli hasbara reports arguing just that.

This constant barrage of lies and misrepresentations and false and inane accusations from the "Israel can do no wrong" crowd have already backfired everywhere aside from the USA. And the day is coming when they will backfire in the USA. The Israeli authorities, along with rabid supporters in the USA, have created the conditions for evil to breed – and hence the rabid military-protected illegal settler movement , the collective punishment strategies, the ongoing land theft, the whole range of perverse human rights abuses that the Israeli authorities are committing now.

Keep on persisting with lies and baseless counter-accusations if you wish, but also accept the fact that most of us can now see through it.

        • SpiritOf1683

There's nothing baseless in describing you as a vicious Jew-hating bigot in the Eichmann mould. You've just gone and proved it here with the sort of vicious antisemitic rantings that wouldn't have been out of place in the Nazi rags Signal, Der Sturmer or Volkischer Beobachter. But then again, you probably think we are just as clayheaded as yourself, which would be almost impossible, unless you're Norm.

        • MixMChess

"Israel has violated more U.N. resolutions than any other country in history."

The UN resolutions were never passed under Article VII and this have no bearing on international law. Starting in the 1960's, an Arab-Soviet-Third World bloc formed what amounted to a pro-Palestinian lobby at the United Nations. These countries were all dictatorships or autocracies and voted together to pass resolutions attacking Israel and supporting the PLO.

Israel has never been allowed to enjoy the same rights at the UN as other member nations due to Arab lobbying. Israel has been the only UN member excluded from a regional group. Geographically, it belongs in the Asian Group; however, the Arab states barred its membership. Without membership in a regional group, Israel cannot sit on the Security Council or other key UN bodies. The discriminatory treatment has excluded Israel from discussion and consultations at the UN offices in Geneva, Nairobi, Rome and Vienna. Israel is prevented from participating in UN talks on human rights, racism and a number of other issues handled in these offices. Israel's treatment at the UN akin to how African-Americans were treated in the South under Jim Crow laws.

Interestingly, the UN has condemned virtually every conceivable form of racism. It has established programs to combat racism and has released programs to combat Islamophobia (at the urging of the Islamic bloc), but has consistently refused to do the same against antisemitism (sadly, also at the urging of the Islamic bloc).

While the UN routinely adopts resolutions critical of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, it has never adopted a single resolution unequivocally condemning violence against Israeli citizens.

But yeah, Georgia, the UN seems real fair to me… I'll leave you with the terror Israelis feel every day but is ignored by the "fair" UN.

I find it shocking, although I shouldn't, that this ghastly, barbaric act by arabs upon a whole Jewish family hasn't even been mentioned in the news. islam is truly a religion of violence, death and suffering, those who adhere to its teachings really do become "two legged animals", although it pains me to compare those savages to animals. One could wish they were more like animals and less like muslims.

The problem with Bungs comment is that the Jews would never commit such a heinous crime. The method of the murder of the family is telling. They could have chosen any way of wiping out this family. They chose the method that inflicted the most pain and suffering and allowed them to release the most rage. That is what makes the crime so despicable and the perps likely candidates for Hell and no vestal virgins.

Europe has been so thouroughly brainwashed by the lies of Hamas, Hezbullah, & the PLO that they are unable to see truth anymore. Having been in Europe many times over the last 10 years I have to say that as biased to the left American media is, European media might as well be an arm of the old Soviet propaganda ministry. It is really a shame to see how low once respected institutions like the BBC have fallen in their blatent use of propaganda. Most so called reporting regarding Israel involves European reporters being taken on carefully orchestrated propaganda tours of Potemkin massacre sites. How thoughtful that Hamas provides translators, victims, injured children, carefully placed toys, and weeping "families" so that the reporters have everything they need to create their story about how monsterous those evil Israelis are. None of these reporters object that they cannot travel freely, without a Hamas minder. None of them object that they cannot freely investigate a story on their own, like any normal reporter should. They all know they are being used and they are ok with it because it fits their agenda.

So, Georgia_L, don't give me any of your BS about what Europe thinks, or what Europe knows that we don't! Most of you are willing tools. Thank god for people like Melanie Phillips, Geert Wilders, and the late Oriana Fallaci who are willing to stand against the tide of brainwashed public opinion and stand up for free speech and truth.
Lastly, to begin your education of what a tool you are, read this following article by Ion Pacepa, the former head of Romania's Espionage service in the old Soviet days. Pay close attention to what he has to say about Arafat & the PLO. http://archive.frontpagemag.com/readArticle.aspx?…
