Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids Promotes Global Islamic State

If you need proof that radical Islam is spread across the country, look no further than Iowa’s Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids, whose extremism is plain for all to see online. One of its most notable attendees is Bill Aossey, a Muslim Youth Camps of America (MYCA) official and president of Midamar Corporation, a leading supplier of Halal foods that was given a loan guarantee of $1.75 million as part of the stimulus package. On August 13, 2010, Aossey sat at President Obama’s table in the White House to enjoy an Iftar meal.

The Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids (ICCR) was built in early 1962 with the assistance of Khalil al-Rauef, a close friend of the Saudi Royal Family who reportedly shared a common interest in Arabian horses with Eleanor Roosevelt. The publication of the Saudi state ARAMCO oil company states, “Nobody remaining in the Cedar Rapids Muslim community remembers just why al-Rauef settled there.” It is assumed that he was drawn to the success of the Muslim community.

Al-Rauef paved the way for Saudi King Faisal to donate $45,000 to the Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids in 1974. The government of Kuwait followed suit, donating $6,000. The government of Libya provided Korans. It is unclear if this happened under Qaddafi’s tenure.

The ICCR’s website happily tells the story of how Muslims from across the world came to America from all sorts of backgrounds in the early 1950s. It mentions “moderate groups like” the Muslim Brotherhood affiliate in Kuwait named Islah; the Jamaat-e-Islami of Pakistan and the Muslim Brotherhood of Sudan. The website praises how “radical groups banned in many Muslim countries” like “Jihad” (presumably the Egyptian Islamic Jihad), Takfir al-Hijra (an Al-Qaeda affiliate) and Hezbollah were able to come to the U.S. In the past, the website linked to Al-Haramain, a Saudi charity that fundraised for Al-Qaeda.

“Here they are able to forge links with students of other nations providing the nucleus for an international network of leaders committed to the creation of an Islamic state, or an Islamic world order,” the ICCR website states.

The mosque blames “ultra-conservative Christians” for causing terrorism. It claims that Islamic extremists “become a kind of mirror image of their Christian counterparts.” It says that “Many of them are being turned by their American experience into anti-Western, anti-Christian Islamic revivalists.” The ICCR teaches that the “root of the problem is the perception of many resident Muslims that the nation as a whole is prejudiced against them.” Disturbingly, a school for children up to nine years old named My Iman Montessori is located within the ICCR.

The ICCR engages in political activism. On January 2, 2008, the Muslim American Society (MAS) and two other unnamed groups held a class at ICCR to prepare Muslims to participate in the Iowa caucus. The MAS is a front for the Muslim Brotherhood. The MAS official involved, Miriam Amer, is now the leader of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Iowa chapter.

She said at the time, “If we can get even one-half of one percent of the Muslims in this state [to] participate in the caucus—with some even serving as precinct captains—we can insure that the proposed planks will become adopted at the state conventions, and help to shape U.S. policy in the future.” In the MAS website’s post on the event, she is quoted urging Muslims to “take part in a historic event that can tip the balance of power in this country.”

Houses of worship cannot campaign on behalf of a political party. The ICCR and MSA were aware of this mentioned that Amer has worked with both parties. It was still obvious that they were trying to get Iowa Muslims to turn out for the Democratic caucus and later, the Democratic presidential candidate. It noted that 44% of Republican voters in the Iowa caucus are evangelicals and said, “Overall, the GOP candidates have basically ignored the immigrant and Muslim vote this time around, opting instead to focus on the Conservative Christian vote.”

I challenge you or anyone sharing these views to open and read the quran with an open heart and mind. You will then see that what you are saying is highly inaccurate and false. The core if Islam and the Quran is to join in what is good and forbid what is harmful and to work together as humanity should to establish peace and preserve and uphold the rights of all living things. Please do proper research before regurgitating false information fed to the masses by the media.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for “Honest” Ibrim Hooper to speak out against them. Or anyone in the OBama Administration for that matter. Your work should be sufficient to inform folks if you could get it to the people that need it; local Law Enforcement, States Attorney, Governors Office, etc. Maybe if enough concerned citizens have knowledge of this they can be better prepared to counter it. I still think exposing the truth does the most damage.

There is no doubt Islam is a far greater threat to the well-being of mankind than Fascism and Communusm ever were. The 'Prophet' of the so-called Religion of Peace murdered al who spoke out against him and with his booty and sex motivated followers, he lied, plotted, tortured, killed, robbed, ransomed and raped his way to total political and religious power.

Americans have been smothered in political correctness to the point they have lost touch with their own self-preservation. Far too many choose the lazy, easy, submissive route of acquiescence to group think. Political correctness has paralyzed people and they sit, as if in a trance, while evil propagates and laughs at them behind lidded eyes.

Make no mistake, Islam is evil and was born of evil. To make the idiotic observation that "there are good Muslims" is to fail to understand that only those who wage jihad are considered "good" according to the Quran. The irony is that the Muslims who don't follow the teachings are the ones we consider "good", which logically means that the religion must be evil, and the ones who are devout prove it by trying to kill us.

  • Sarah

Wow. Talk about terrorist activity. This piece of garbage is CLEARLY just an attempt to cause fear among the people in Iowa. That mosque has some of the most liberal Muslims I have ever known. Bill Aosssey was a member of the Peace Corps. Other former members have proudly served the nation in the Marine Corps. The governing body of the Mosque has, in the past, removed clerics for being too fundamental. The members of this congregation have worked with and assimilated themselves into the American culture. So, they held a seminar on voting?? Big deal. What could possibly be more American than that?? Please don't try to tell me that the same sort of meetings are not happening in churches all over the country. Of course they are. It happens every 4 years when there is an election. Your reference to Bill Aossey sitting down with President Obama for an Iftar dinner is only a weak, cowardly attempt to cast doubt on the President in an attempt to sway people to vote the way YOU want them to vote. I seriously doubt you have any real issue with the mosque in Cedar Rapids at all. This is just an attempt to put fear into the naive, ignorant people who read your drivel. This is about getting your candidate into office. It's about getting the bigots out to the polls. Nothing more. Your argument doesn't have a leg to stand on since it's just trumped up trash talk. Too bad, try again next time.

    • wobble

Wow, you actually believe your own drivel. amazing. It's people like you who will hasten the Islamization of this country. Islam is a hate-filled death cult and you're a fool to support it.

      • http://-------- brer-b

Absolutely right ‘Wobble’ ! It’s her (Sarah) and people like her that are smothering in a thick fog of brainwashed delusion. You’re right too Bailey !
This so-called “religion” is just a cover for a tyrannical political system, that’s based on a hate-book that calls for the death of all the “infidels” (non-islamists).
.Webster’s:– “Infidel:…one who does not accept the common religion..” Of course, being a militant, genocidal “religion”, to them the ‘common’ religion is islam
In an article posted Dec. 18,/07 by C.A.N. gives 12 examples of Islamic jihadist killings. including one,-”The last confirmed jihadist killing to take place in the American hemisphere occured in February: an Islamic man gunned down five Valentine’s Day shoppers in Salt Lake City, Utah.” This is typical. How about the muslim man in Toronto who killed his wife in “honor to allah” because she filed for divorce because of his abusive behavior – which the “religios” book supports. He thought his religion would give him immunity ! Guess what– he got a life sentence !! Why?– Because murder IS murder, and the only true God states, “Thou shalt not kill.” Guess where murderers end up !!

Hehe, his grandfather came to Iowa in1988. Sorry to tell you but that mosque was well established by 1988 being built in 1974 as you previously reported. Proofread much?

  • Sarah

I'm sorry, I must have missed the part where you actually provide evidence that the Islamic Center is promoting a Global Islamic State.

  • Sara S

The Cedar Rapids Islamic community is an excellent example of how Muslims can not only co exist peacefully with neighbors of other faiths, but have upstanding and very loyal citizens. It is too bad that this author and this audience prefers to live in fear and hatred of American Muslims. If they suffer from Islamophobia (see definition below), they need to be informed and get over it. People like Bill Aossey have dinner with the President because he has created 100s jobs and helped stimulate the economy in Iowa through exports to countries around the world. And he happens to be a Muslim American Patriot. If any of his critics have comparable accomplishments, speak up now.

Islamophobia describes prejudice against, hatred or irrational fear of Islam or Muslims[1][2] The term dates back to the late 1980s or early 1990s,[3] but came into common usage after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.[4]

In 1997, the British Runnymede Trust defined Islamophobia as the "dread or hatred of Islam and therefore, to the fear and dislike of all Muslims," stating that it also refers to the practice of discriminating against Muslims by excluding them from the economic, social, and public life of the nation. It includes the perception that Islam has no values in common with other cultures, is inferior to the West and is a violent political ideology rather than a religion.[5]

Professor in History of Religion, Anne Sophie Roald, states that Islamophobia was recognized as a form of intolerance alongside Xenophobia and Antisemitism at the "Stockholm International Forum on Combating Intolerance"[6]. The conference, attended by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, the OSCE Secretary General Ján Kubis and representatives of the European Union and Council of Europe, adopted a declaration to combat "genocide, ethnic cleansing, racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia and xenophobia, and to combat all forms of racial discrimination and intolerance related to it." http://en.metapedia.org/wiki/Runnymede_Trust

I don't like wiki but I'll use it because you have. There's obviously bias toward Muslims from your view and from the author's but I would really hesitate to base my perceptions about Islamophobia on a definition provided by a twisted, morally confused group such as the Runnymede trust.

They look far more biased than either you or the author.

I am biasd too and while I don't think it's healthy to generalize an ethnicity, it is nothing short of dangerous to ignore the fact that over 90% of all terrorist bombings in the world are committed by people of Islamic faith.

First, Your information and dates are not correct let alone your miss information. There is a saying in Iowa Midwest: "Don't kick a skunk or you will smell like a skunk !" Your slanderish information is not worthy to even comment on as you have taken such a low ground of intellect which permeates your low level of mentality. No point to kick a skunk!

  • FromCedarRapids

I'm from Cedar Rapids, have known and worked with many Muslims there through the years. They have helped build that community, are long-standing, upright community members. I've also visited the Cedar Rapids Islamic Center. Nothing you are saying in this blog aligns with what I've experienced and known. It is a shame that you are slandering an entire community that you probably have never visited or even met. You may be genuinely fearful, but spreading your ignorance and promoting fear is not the answer. I think you owe the Cedar Rapids Islamic Community, Bill Aossey and the others you've slandered in this article an apology and a visit to build bridges, not further tear apart our great land.

I think you need to do your research on these people, and wake the hell up!!

Frankly, Mr. Ryan Mauro does not have the details or history of what he has posted. He has made statements that can be deemed slanderous and libelous in his article. One should critique with criticism the rest of his Islamophobia and their baseless accusations toward Muslims. But after so many emails from friends, and especially from outside of the Islamic community, it was discussed and decided a reply for the sake of truth, and so others who have been misled by people such as Mr. Mauro will realize how baseless such accusations are and what hate mongers they are.
Many friends, business associates and family members forwarded Mauro’s article with outrage. When asked my opinion, I stated, “Forget it, these are insecure people to attack others.” There is always an attendance for a circus. As we know, a circus is for exhibition, entertainment, and a freakshow. Therefore, a part of society will always be attracted to a “circus” and this reflects the type of audience Mauro hopes to gain his attention from.

  • Bill Aossey

It is interesting that so much Global Prominence is located right in Cedar Rapids, Iowa! With the Iowa Caucuses to be held in less than a month, perhaps the Caucuses should be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to impart a global perspective whereby the entire nation along with global Islamic communities can truly see democracy at work from one of the oldest continuous Islamic communities in the Americas.
I read Ryan Mauro’s article “Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids Promotes Global Islamic State” with neither intimidation nor anger. The lack of attention to accuracy, dates, and information alludes to Mauro’s elementary education and sensationalism, showing a lack of understanding of our society and Iowa’s history of multiculturalism. It is unfortunate that there are people like Mauro, Ann Coulter, Pamela Geller, and Joe Kaufman who wrote about “Camp Terror”. It seems that much of Mauro’s misinformation mimics Kaufman’s hyper-insecurity and feeble intellect in an to attempt to propagate misinformation about others just to put themselves in the spotlight. Again, this psychological inferiority complex to put other people down is representative of the prevailing mentality of a lack of self-esteem and their own personal complexities. It is time for the American people to realize that Mauro, Coulter, Kaufman and the idiot Geller make money from their nonsense, and spread racial, religious and ethnic hatred–all of which is forbidden by law and by all moral codes in Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam, not to mention in the ethos of the United States of America.
However, many of these writers should apologize to the Jewish community. So for many of the writers that are creating an anti-Jewish feeling among good Americans, they should back off from creating blow-back and back-lash toward good citizens of both Jewish and Islamic convictions. This is not anti-Semitic because there are too many people globally that consider themselves of Semitic origin.
I read Mauro’s posting with detail. It is unfortunate that people like him seem quite troubled and psychologically disposed to add more misinformation and spread religious hatred. A couple of points among the many errors in the article that need to be corrected are as follows.
Yes, I was honored and proud to be seated with President Obama as most respectable people would be so honored to sit with the President of the United States. Further, I have been invited and engaged at White House functions under five presidents and of both Parties. From your point of view, whether one agrees or disagrees with a President, it is still an honor to be invited to the White House and to be selected to sit with a President. Has Ryan Mauro ever been formally invited to the White House?
Midamar has been in business for 35 years, creating jobs, prosperity, and employment. We do not sit on our “tukhus” in front of a computer, spewing misinformation! The people of Iowa work and our staff at Midamar create a positive image of USA exports in foreign markets, bringing money home from our global services; not sending money out for imports and replacement of jobs. The SBA loan guarantee was not a part of the stimulus package but an imposed obligation on small businesses and obligated by a bank guarantee due to the mismanagement of the banking sector. Midamar is a well managed company, which never needed loan guarantees until the so-called “smart” Wall Street bankers devastated the economy, forcing companies and individuals into borrowing on a guaranteed basis to back up the banks’ mistakes. So this was really an imposed service charge on businesses like ours and not an option and certainly not a “bail out” as part of the Stimulus Package. We work and not sit and write misinformation.
Iowa educational institutions have been honored and blessed with providing thousands of international students with one of the best educational and social experiences that international students could ever ask for while being hosted at the Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids with a sense of hospitality and giving that foreign students often miss during their separation from home and family. Hundreds of these foreign students have become an asset to American education, American USA values in their home countries and have developed a positive attitude toward America because of these visits to our Iowa Center and Mosque. Note also that many of these same students have become leaders in their home countries; this is a benefit to them and to USA and our relationships internationally, especially in the Gulf region of the Middle east. These Iowa foreign alumni are one of the best conduits to receive Governors, Ambassadors, and trade representatives as alumni from Iowa educational institutions through their international affiliation. Ryan, you overlooked Iowa’s Sister State program with Malaysia that I helped to initiate to expand Iowa’s international relations—and without terrorist connections!

  • Bill Aossey

Mauro’s elementary research stated that there is no recollection of Rauef’s linkage to the Iowa community. How wrong he is! With regards to Khalil al-Rauef, I personally met him on a number of occasions. I know why he came to Iowa, and I am well aware of how and why King Faisal, truly a compassionate Muslim and a man of integrity and with a vision and wisdom of his own made the contribution of $45,000 to the Cedar Rapids community was with honor and openness, from King Faisal. I know the facts of the matter and it was an open and generous gift to our Iowa Mosque for Muslims in America; friendship, plain and simple. This was greatly appreciated and there will never be a pause or a need for explanation of this generous gift. And there will NEVER be a hesitation of acknowledgement of this gift from Saudi Arabia on behalf of King Faisal, and may God bless his soul. The Iowa Islamic community is well recognized and established in the United States with a history unlike any other community in North or South America that has been graced with the hospitality and understanding of the multiculturalism of Iowa. There has been a significant Muslim population in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for over 100 years. Can you name even one single act of terrorism, subterfuge, mayhem or sedition committed by any member of this long standing and respected community? No, you cannot because there has never been such an act. I, like my forefathers before me, espouse an ideology of Peace, Kindness, and Multiculturalism to all people, including those who write nasty and uninformed articles about me and the whole community.
Further, we hope that you will accept an invitation to visit Iowa and Cedar Rapids, then a meeting could be arranged with the FBI, Homeland Security, the Iowa Attorney General, the Cedar Rapids Attorney General, and the local police department and you could present them with the “evidence” of what you purport is negligence on their part as to how they have overlooked this Islamic Center in Cedar Rapids with such global connections that you have claimed to uncover and expose!
Mr. Mauro, you need to be more responsible when writing your articles and again, an invitation stands open to you to be our guest and really come to know the truth about Muslims, not only in Iowa but in the USA. Further, you will be treated with respect and hospitality that you probably cannot imagine.

  • Bill Aossey

Mauro stated that “His [Bill Aossey’s] maternal grandfather came to Iowa in 1988 as the first documented Muslim settler in the state.” Ryan is only 100 years off, which shows his lack of knowledge of what he is even trying to document. This is just a starter.
Many friends, business associates and family members forwarded Mauro’s article to me with outrage. When asked my opinion, I initially stated, “Forget it, these are insecure and feeble people to attack others.” There is always an attendance for a circus! As we know, a circus is for exhibition, entertainment, and a freak show. It is interesting that so much Global Prominence is located right in Cedar Rapids, IOWA! I read Ryan Mauro’s article, “Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids Promotes Global Islamic State” with neither intimidation nor anger. The lack of attention to accuracy, dates, and information alludes to Mauro’s elementary online education and sensationalism, showing a lack of understanding of our society and Iowa’s history of multiculturalism. But what can be expected from a 20 some year old online degree holder?

You obviously have never been to the Islamic Center here and have no idea what goes on there. No place is more open and welcoming to people of all faiths. I began to attend dinners and events there as a Christian. I was welcomed with open arms. I have been to Friday prayers many times and the sermons never advocate anything radical. Bill Aossey is a good friend and he is not a terrorist in any way, shape or form. You should be ashamed of the fear mongering you are perpetrating here. I bet you will not publish this comment-you are too cowardly.
