The Death of Illusions

[Below is a translation of several major excerpts from a speech given by Valeria Novodvorskaya on Dec. 30, 2010 to The New Times News, a Russian newspaper. She is discussing Russian dissidents’ loss of faith in the West and in Obama — and for this reason she calls the new year the “Death of Illusions.” The video of her speech (in Russian) can be seen on YouTube.]

I think that it is time to turn to Tolkien, for darkness is descending upon the world.  This is not because of the volcano (or whatever it was called), but because a new age has begun, and the sun will not rise. It has begun because the West — our hope and our foundation, our Promised Land to which we looked in admiration — is giving up its perennial principles and values.  It is an époque of a total and absolute betrayal, the year of absolute betrayal.

Obama was everyone’s hope, for we thought that he was a pupil of Salinger and would be saving us, lost children, in the rye over the abyss. We thought he would protect us from lies and would not let us fall — and that there would be an end of double-faced diplomacy and the beginning of some integrity. What, however, have we witnessed instead?  Perezagruzka (resetting) – restarting of friendships.  We have witnessed the most shameful acquiescence, the flattery of Putin and Medvedev.  And it is done with a total shamelessness that does not have an end.

And the whole world joined in, following this course with the greatest of care.  Britain is altogether silent; it has stopped its objections.  There is a total change of policy in Germany.  Angela Merkel no longer notices or mentions the nightmarish events that are taking place here. In Italy, Berlusconi has not noticed us or cared about us for the longest time, and Nicolas Sarkozy is selling warships to Russia, two Mistral warships, so that he can make more employment for Frenchmen. And he spits at the reality that he is creating, for these Mistral warships will sail to the Crimea, to Georgia (Caucasus).  It is a total betrayal.  It is a betrayal of Georgia as well, a country that has not, after all, been accepted into NATO.

We should not forget, of course, that our countries and their citizens are also betraying themselves.  There was this catastrophic election in Ukraine when its population voted for Yanukovich not simply out of error, nor out of snobbishness.  The people had given up striving and exchanged freedom for promised satiety, altogether as real Sovoks (that is, a people formed by the Soviets).  But they did not get far after this vote.  And now they will have to live through the result of their choice.

In the local elections, Yanukovich collected some votes even in the western part of Ukraine. . . (something that has never happened before). And now they have started a criminal investigation against Yulia Tymoshenko in order to silence her. And the party of Yuschenko — that had been pushing Ukraine towards the West and NATO — did not collect any voices.  This is a total retreat, a retreat back into Sovok (the Soviet regime). And just think of the acquiescence of the West in that retreat. Those Western values (for which we here are prepared to die, to give up our lives for the act of the defense of freedom, that very American Act) are now exchanged for gas, oil, some minor gifts of space for an airplane landing and for the veto process.

Valeria Novodvorskaya is a bright lady indeed (whom I was privileged even to meet once personally). She understands the realities of Russia perfectly well, yet what goes about America and the West she doesn't. Her confession

    "Obama was our hope"

    tells it all. She continuous:

"… we have been sold out. The West has sold – betrayed altogether – that small part of the Russian population that has upheld the values of freedom…"

However that was exactly what the West has been doing all the time since the Bolsheviks took the power! And the Manchurian (better to say Bilderberg's) "president" Obama is the culmination of those very policies of betrayal by the West, and of the West itself. Yet she is so correct saying

"A new age has begun, and the sun will not rise"

The English translation is inaccurate in suggesting that Valeria Novodvorskaya was once among those who focused their hopes on Obama. She says:

„Обама на которого все так надеялись“

which means "Obama who everyone had such high hopes for" rather than "Obama was our hope". I think you would agree that the offered translation distorts the meaning. The fact that non-Russian speakers only have access to the written version erodes things further as it fails to convey a subtle element of sarcasm in her words, which is key.

Having said that, I remain grateful to the people who have popularised this interview by translating it into English. The main points that Valeria Novodvorskaya makes are clear and deserve attention.

America fights for freedom at the same time forces within undermine that struggle. We need to purge our intelligence, and military agencies.

    • stephencuz

It would fail if it stopped there. We would have to purge academia as well, beginning with the primary education of our youth who are essentially indoctrinated to hold in contempt our capitalist way of life. They are taught to see morals as having a base no more solid than the projection of the present where those with voice tell them what is just and good. When definitions can change so readily, we all become subject to populist opinion rather than moral absolutes. This is a more dire threat in its consequence to my mind than a recognizable push toward socialism.

      • MontanaRob

I think it needs to begin with academia now, a continuation of the purge in DC, and yes, a careful cleansing of the military and intelligence communities. A strict pledge to remain loyal to the Constitution and traditional American values must be at the core, with the penalties for failing to uphold that pledge to be quickly and severely dealt with., no excuses, no exceptions!

In the 1980's, Obama, many members of Congress, employees in every government department, university professors and their students who then became public school teachers, were followers of Communist Party USA fronts funded and directed by the Soviet KGB! "The Followers of the 80's KGB are now the leaders of the U.S.A. today!" They are legitimizing "Socialism" which is just a PC term and part of this plan is to show a better face of Communism by focusing on Vladimir Putin as being "cool." He was on Larry King, videos of him playing piano and singing, judo, horseback riding, shirtless, four hour call in with millions of questions, and all to brainwash the world, but mostly the USA, to show that "Socialism" isn't that bad.Democrat Party!

  • Steve Chavez

Obama, Hillary, and many of their employees under them, loved the Soviet Union more than their own country! Many of them praise the likes of Mao, Minh, and Castro. Hillary smiling with Chavez but she's the most popular again even though she was embarassed by Bill's adultery and she had no honor to leave, only to retain power and the perks, while brave women leave with nothing? If you go to CPUSA.ORG OR PWW.ORG you will see the similarities with the Democrat Party!

    She writes:
"Obama was our hope, for we thought that he was a pupil of Salinger and would be saving us, lost children, in the rye over the abyss. We thought he would protect us from lies and would not let us fall — and that there would be an end of double-faced diplomacy " “The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”

It's sad to read about foreigners' misplaced faith in Barack Obama, but like so many Americans who could not or would not see past that poseur's empty rhetoric, they ultimately have themselves to blame – not all of us were fooled by this charlatan and the praise heaped upon him by the starry-eyed votaries of his cult of personality. They held him up to the heavens, projecting their own hopes and visions upon him, and now that their Icarus has crashed to earth, they are sorely disappointed and disillusioned. Their Redeemer, their Deliverer has failed them. They bought into the soaring rhetoric, thinking that his by lofty words and charisma alone, he could magically change the hearts and minds of thugs like Vladimir Putin and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Had they stopped singing his praises long enough to actually listen to the man, they would have discovered what many of us knew a long time ago.

I should feel sorry for these people, but their disillusionment is a direct product of their own irrationality. They helped create the Myth, they helped raise their Hero to the pinnacle of power – they have no one to blame but themselves. To compound their error, when they were warned, they refused to listen, choosing to withdraw into the comfort of their delusional Rapture.

So, no, I don't feel sorry for these fools. Obama did not betray them – nothing about the man has changed – they betrayed themselves and all of us along with them. Let them weep over their own folly, but I won't weep over them. Their tears and lamentations inspire contempt, not pity.

It is true what you wrote, yet it is not about Valeria Novodvorskaya. In no way is she associated with "starry-eyed votaries "

      • Jamie Glazov

        Thanks Alexander.

      • http://apcnational.wordpress.com/ Mike in VA

Duly noted, Alexander, and thank you for pointing that out.

    • 2maxpower

….no obama didn't betray them. they did indeed betray themselves. obama was well known to anyone capable of a modicum of critical thought.

the education system has corrupted fully half the population of north america. that and people are becoming lazy expecting/wishing for some windfall.

no magic here people. just a lot of personal betrayal.

  • ajag23

It is sad how a majority of Americans would vote for a president who had arrogantly declared to fundamentally transform America, and to introduce policies that would make electricity rates sky-rocket. For those who knew the truth about Obama's lifelong immersion in far left socialist activities, these were shocking and frightening statements, and his election meant that America had joyfully welcomed its own October revolution presided over by a new Lenin made appealing by his personality and a nice family. Sadly, most people were duped and deceived by the useful idiots in the media and academia, but are now being awakened by the truth that is slowly emanating. There is hope that the wait for change will be much shorter than seventy years which should be encouraging to Russian dissidents like Valeria Novodnoskaya.

    • http://www.resonoelusono.com/NaturalBornCitizen.htm Alexander Gofen

      Well said!

The analogy with Lenin's coup in 1917 is even stronger. Notwithstanding the votes of the duped 67 millions, the pompous campaigning and affirmation of a blatantly illegitimate candidate could happen only under the criminal confederacy of the all government structures…

  • Ghostwriter

Let's be honest here. Obama is operating under the illusion that we can talk to people like Putin,A-jad,Chavez,etc,that they'll be nicer to us and leave us alone. Unfortunately,he's still living with those illusions and it will be to our peril.

  • SECREV

Ohh valeria … you are talking about Obama and the West betraying the wide-eyed Eastern hopefuls, which is bad enough, but consider this: Obama and the western Left are betraying the West itself. I am not sure where you live (in the West or in the East), but you have no idea what the Communist/Fascist totalitarian 'philosophy' exported from, and nurtured by, the Soviet east has done to those of us who were fortunate enough to be born and raised in the West (USA, in particular), where individual freedom and liberty reigned. NOT ANY LONGER. The left has all but finished its take over of America (and europe was lost almost half a century ago). You are talking about sinking and sun never shining upon the hopes you tied to the West? We are talking about sinking and sub never shining on the entire humanity—including the West. Lament if you must. (And we will, for we must, too.) But at least try to look at the larger picture. It is not just your ex-soviet populous hopes that are being murdered. It is the entire humanity that is on the slaughter block, and i am ashamed to report that it is our WESTERN doofuses ('dopes') that let it happen. If you are REALLY concerned, help us FIGHT this monster that you know all too well, and our dummy americans can't even begin to conceive of, let alone fight.

    • Mira Chakalova

SECREV, your frustration is palpable and you have every reason to be aggravated by the direction the West has taken. Your emotional outburst is therefore perfectly understandable, however, it is not right to address your grievances to Valeria Novodvorskaya. She is very much on top of the “larger picture” and by being politically active and outspoken, she is doing everything she could possibly do from within Russia to “fight the monster”.

Thanks to Alexander Gofen for his earlier comment clarifying Novodvorskaya’s position (response to Mike VA above).
